10 Benefits of Social Media for Business #why #use #social #media #for

10 Benefits of Social Media for Business

There was a time when social media was considered by some as a passing fad. Something that “the kids” were using that businesses could never really benefit from. Over time, the skeptics were proved wrong. There are over 3 billion internet users—and over 2 billion of them have active social media accounts. Popular social platforms have become marketing giants, offering businesses valuable data about their customers and a (mostly) free way to reach them. The jury has spoken: social media for business is no longer optional.

If you’re wondering how social media can benefit your business, look no further. We’ve outlined key points below.

Bonus. Get the step-by-step social media strategy guide with pro tips on how to grow your social media presence with Hootsuite.

1. Gain valuable customer insights

Social media generates a huge amount of data about your customers in real time. Every day there are over 500 million Tweets. 4.5 billion Likes on Facebook. and 95 million photos and videos uploaded to Instagram. Behind these staggering numbers is a wealth of information about your customers—who they are, what they like, and how they feel about your brand.

Through daily active engagement and social listening. you can gather relevant customer data and use that information to make smarter business decisions. With Hootsuite Insights. for example, you can gather information across all your social networks in real time—allowing you to gauge customer sentiment, find the conversations happening around your brand, and run real-time reports.

2. Increase brand awareness and loyalty

When you have a presence on social media, you make it easier for your customers to find and connect with you. And by connecting with your customers on social, you’re more likely to increase customer retention and brand loyalty. A study by The Social Habit shows that 53 percent of Americans who follow brands on social are more loyal to those brands .

3. Run targeted ads with real-time results

Social ads are an inexpensive way to promote your business and distribute content. They also offer powerful targeting options so that you can reach the right audience. For example, if you run an ad campaign on LinkedIn. you can segment by things like location, company, job title, gender, and age—the list goes on. If you’re running a Facebook ad. you can target based on location, demographics, interests, behaviors, and connections. You can track and measure the performance of your social ads in real time.

4. Generate higher converting leads

Social media increases sales and customer retention through regular interaction and timely customer service. In the 2015 Sales Best Practices Study from research institute MHI Global, world-class companies rated social media as the most effective way to identify key decision makers and new business opportunities. In the State of Social Selling in 2015, nearly 75 percent of companies that engaged in selling on social media reported an increase in sales in 12 months.

5. Provide rich customer experiences

Even if you aren’t on social media, most of your customers expect you to be. Over 67 percent of consumers now go to social media for customer service. They expect fast response times and 24/7 support —and companies that deliver win out. A study by Aberdeen Group shows that companies engaging in social customer service see much bigger annual financial gains (7.5 percent YOY growth) vs. those without (2.9 percent) .

6. Increase website traffic and search ranking

One of the biggest benefits of social media for business is using it to increase your website traffic. Not only does social media help you direct people to your website, but the more social media shares you receive, the higher your search ranking will be. For example, if every person who follows Hootsuite on Twitter Retweets this post, it’s more likely to rank higher in Google’s search engine results page for variations of “social media for business.”

7. Find out what your competitors are doing

With social media monitoring you can gain key information about your competitors. This kind of intel will allow you to make strategic business decisions to stay ahead of them. For example, you can create search streams in Hootsuite to monitor industry keywords and mentions of your competitors’ names and products. Based on your search results, you can improve your business to offer product enhancements, service, or content that they may be missing.

8. Share content faster and easier

In the past, marketers faced the challenge of ensuring their content reached customers in the shortest possible time. With the help of social media, specifically when it comes to sharing content about your business or for content curation. all you need to do is share it on your brand’s social network accounts.

9. Geotarget content

Geo-targeting is an effective way to send your message out to a specific audience based on their location. Social networks like Facebook and Twitter have tools that allow you to communicate the right kind of content to your audience. For example, in Hootsuite you can target Twitter messages to followers in specific countries. or send messages from Facebook and LinkedIn company pages to specific groups based on geographical and demographic parameters. You can also use Hootsuite geotargeting to find conversations relevant to your brand.

For example, social media allows tourism brands to create dialogue with travellers, therefore creating relationships with customers before, during, and after they have booked a trip with the company. This kind of social media dialogue between brands and customers is something traditional advertising cannot achieve.

How To Track How Many Times Links Are Shared On Social Media

Popular Topics

Top Deals

Keeping track of social shares is easy, as long as you actually own the website. Robust tracking tools such as Google Analytics and other plugins make it easy to track how often your content is shared. But what if you want to keep track of sites you don t run?

With minimal digging, you can uncover all sorts of interesting social media statistics about any link. Whether it s to keep tabs on your competition, or just out of curiosity, the services below will help you track social sharing on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Pinterest, StumbleUpon, and more.

Muck Rack Bookmarklet

The Muck Rack bookmarklet shows how many times a link has been shared on Facebook or Twitter. It also has the added advantage of letting you know if journalists have shared the page on their social media profiles. This, of course, only applies to journalists who have a profile on Muck Rack.

With popular social-media tool Topsy, you can find out how many times a link has been tweeted. A unique and useful feature Topsy brings to the table is that it can show you which influential Twitter users shared the link. You can also break down the tweets by language.

To find out what else you can use the service for, be sure to take a look at Saikat s in-depth review on Topsy .

Shared Count

Shared Count is the kingpin of services for finding out about social shares. Not only does it support a wide variety of social networking platforms, it also breaks down how the content is being shared within one social network.

While Muck Rack tells you how much activity a link has received on Facebook, likes, shares and comments are presented all as one figure. Shared Count breaks it down into specific numbers. The services supported by Shared Count are Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Delicious and StumbleUpon.

Counting Tweets

Counting Tweets takes a slightly different approach. Rather than give you numbers for just one specific link, you can use the service to discover how many times every link on a page has been shared.

For example, you can enter the link to MakeUseOf s home page and view all the tweets for all the links on the page. This is also useful if you re looking at an article filled with links, and want to see how often each of those links has been shared on Twitter.

With URL shortening service Bitly. you can gleam a little bit of extra information about any given link. However, the data you re going to find is not complete.

Bitly s statistics depend entirely on people using the URL-shortening service, but it can give you a sense of how many people are clicking the Bitly link, and which social networks their clicks are coming from. You can also get a geographical breakdown, as well as an hourly or daily breakdown.

To view this information, simply paste the URL into the bitly shortener, and then click on: View stats from other Bitly links . You can alo paste the URL into your browser s address bar and add the + sign before hitting enter.

Check out our full review to find out more about Bitly Shortens URLs Offers A Wide Variety Of Free Tools Shortens URLs Offers A Wide Variety Of Free Tools The process of copying and pasting a URL is almost a no-brainer, but often we come across those long URLs that look absolutely atrocious when pasting them in an email or on in a forum. W ord-of-mouth advertising is very powerful. You need to earn the trust of your audience so they will recommend your products or services to their friends. Chances are that you’re already using Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms to create engagement and thought leadership in your space. S ocial media analytics tools can help you make sense of how well your social media marketing efforts are paying off and identify areas that need improvement.

These 9 free social media analytics tools are some of the best out there.

This isn’t an ordered list — all of these apps are great. Give a few of them a try and gain some insights that will help you reach your goals!

1. Followerwonk

Followerwonk helps you explore and grow your social graph. You can dig into your Twitter analytics to learn who your followers are, where they’re located, and when they tweet. The app creates actionable visualizations that enable you to compare your social graph to others, as well as find and connect with influencers.

2. Buffer

Buffer is a great tool that will help you in two main ways. You can write a few of posts at a time and choose which social profiles to send them to, and then Buffer will spread them throughout the day or week so that you don’t have to be at a computer all the time in order to have a social media presence. It also shortens your links and tracks engagement so you can see how many people clicked on them.

3. SumAll

SumAll helps guide your decision making by connecting all your key online marketing and e-commerce data in one interactive chart. Features include real-time data monitoring, goal tracking, viewing new vs. returning customers, and trendlines that project future performance.

4. Quintly

Quintly is a social media benchmarking and analytics solution that tracks and compares the performance of your social media marketing activities. Whether you are using Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, or all of them, their tool visualizes and checks your social marketing success, benchmarking your numbers against your competitors or best practices.

5. Cyfe

Cyfe is an all-in-one dashboard that helps you monitor and analyze data found across all your online services, including Google Analytics, Salesforce, AdSense, MailChimp, Amazon, Facebook, WordPress, Zendesk, and Twitter from one single location in real time. No more wasting countless hours tracking down your data from all over the Web every day!

6. Keyhole

Keyhole provides real-time social conversation tracking for Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. It helps you measure and amplify conversations around your brand and campaigns, enables you identify prospective clients and influencers talking about (or looking for) your services, and aids in driving engagement by finding and re-sharing relevant content.

7. Klout

Klout measures influence based on your ability to drive action across the social Web. When you connect your social media accounts, it generates a score on a scale of 1-100 that represents your ability to engage other people and inspire social actions. The platform helps you gain insights that allow you better understand how you influence others.

8. ViralWoot

ViralWoot enables you to get more exposure for your Pinterest profile and your pins. You earn “seeds” (points) by following other users and re-pinning. It also helps with scheduling so your visibility is increased, and you can create alerts that let you know when other users are pinning your content.

9. Addictomatic

Addictomatic is straightforward tool that can be used to monitor your brand’s influence and reputation. Its discovery platform searches Google, Bing, Twitter, WordPress, YouTube, and Flickr to find the most recent blog posts, news, images, or videos based on your keywords. It breaks the search results into headers, making them easier to navigate.

It’s always great to discover new useful tools, thanks for creating this list.

I use these tools:

  • SimilarWeb is awesome for revealing anyone’s traffic structure
  • Buzzsumo is perfect to find popular articles
  • Fanpage Karma for detailed fan page analysis

But the best thing is when you combine these and put together a tool-excel magic combination for getting the most out of your data. I was curious about how some of the top publishers perform on social media, so I did an analysis by combining SimilarWeb, Buzzsumo and Fanpage Karma.

The best thing is that I got all the information for free. Here is the link if you would like to check it out:

What Is Social Media Marketing?

Social media marketing refers to the process of gaining traffic or attention through social media sites.

Social media itself is a catch-all term for sites that may provide radically different social actions. For instance, Twitter is a social site designed to let people share short messages or updates with others. Facebook, in contrast is a full-blown social networking site that allows for sharing updates, photos, joining events and a variety of other activities.

Why would a search marketer or a site about search engines care about social media? The two are very closely related.

Top 100 Schools for Animation, Gaming, and Design #top #100 #schools #in

Top 100 Schools for Animation, Gaming, and Design

Did You Know. Full Sail University offers online degree programs in computer animation, game art, and game design? Learn more about Full Sail University’s online programs.

The animation education industy has never been so competitive, with schools competing for students and students competing for a small number of available industry jobs. The job rate and student employability has dropped to the lowest in years, so a top-notch animation education has never been so critical.

All this has made choosing the right animation school extremely difficult. To help students navigate through the world of animation schools, we’ve put together the Top 100 most highly-regarded and sought after animation schools on the planet. This list of the Top 100 Schools in Animation, Gaming and Design was compiled via a mixture of school reviews, industry-reviewed lists like the Princeton Review, and via a survey of the animation industry professionals and recruiters from companies like Pixar, J.J. Sedelmaier and DreamWorks who were featured in our Interview Series. And without further ado, here are your Top 100 Schools in Animation, Gaming and Design:

Let’s start this list off with a bang by beginning with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. This design school made our list because it is a tight-knit school that offers a fully customizable course load—but unlike some of their competitors they do it without school-defined majors. They definitely win the prize for being the most flexible program (or lackthereof) on this list. Only problem is: if you don’t like the education you get then you have only yourself to blame (and I suppose the mentor who helps you craft your personalized program). No worries though, their wide-selection of Film, Animation, Illustration and Graphic Design courses certainly won’t let you down.

The University of Visual Arts in Tucson has a small faculty (with an excellent teacher-to-student ratio) and a small-art school vibe. But don’t let the size fool you, this highly-advanced visual arts school packs a wallop with their Graphic Design. Animation and Illustration programs. They also offer BFA degrees in Studio Art and Photography, an MFA degree in Studio Arts with three areas of emphasis, one of which is Motion Arts. Their animation and design courses are highly practical as they focus heavily on industry-dominating Flash software and character development.

When your entire focus is animation, you get pretty good at it; when all you teach is animation, you get pretty good at that too. The Animation Workshop’s sole focus on animation has paid off as they have become the top Scandinavian animation school, and one of the best in Europe. The school has five departments, each focusing on a different element of animation; each department enrolls a limited number of students annually—so that they maintain their great teacher-to-student ratio. Despite their northerly location the school and faculty have fostered tight relationships with the European animation community and have landed positions for their graduates at DreamWorks in the U.S, Brown Bag Films in Ireland, Aardman in the U.K. Cartoon-Film in Germany, Folimage in France, BRB in Spain and more.

The Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) takes a unique approach to preparing their students to work in the animation industry, they require at least one (most students complete two) short film(s) before graduation. These short films are made in conjunction with the production, editing, sound and photography departments so the animation grads leave school with a professional-looking film; films that regularly score the school’s graduates entry level jobs at prominent studios across Europe. FAMU has two animation programs, a three-year bachelor’s program and a five-year master’s. Their master’s program in animation is extremely tough to get into though as they accept just five students annually.

9Zeros in Spain hosts three four-year animation programs: Cartooning, 3D Animation and Stop Motion. The stop-motion program steals the show at this school though as the 400-hour program is good—and the only one on the continent. This boutique program accepts just 120 students a year. Included in the program is an internship with European-based studios that the school maintains close ties with and an end-of-the-program final project to add to their portfolio. The Spanish animation scene absorbs most of 9Zeros’ graduates.

La Poudrière is an animation school created over a decade ago by France’s most-prominent animation studio, Folimage. The directors at Folimage designed La Poudrière’s program in an interesting way. there is no faculty. Instead the students are taught by the 60 to 80 guest lecturers that rotate through the campus annually. The school’s two-year animation program focuses heavily on animated film directing, has a max of 10 students per class and is taught primarily via supervised projects to ensure that students get the most hands-on experience possible and leave school with a hefty portfolio. Another interesting, and highly realistic, part of the program is that students are forced to create their work within given budgets and time schedules.

The Art Center College of Design (often referred to simply as the ‘Art Center’) has been regularly listed as a top art/design school by BusinessWeek, U.S. News, DesignIntelligence, and U.S. News World Report. Their degree programs in Entertainment Design. Film. Fine Art. Graphic Design. Illustration and Interaction Design all offer tempting elements to aspiring animators, designers and game designers. Their courses are heavily influenced by pop culture, hand and life drawing and a mixture of emerging media.

If living in Long Beach, California wasn’t enough to sell prospective design students on going to California State University Long Beach, then the program the school created would do it. Their BA and BFA degree programs in Graphic Design, Illustration and Studio Art offer interesting tracks in illustration and/or animation; meaning they train artists first, then turn them into animators. This strategy is working well because California’s top animation studios recruit from CSU Long Beach. They also offer interesting media courses in their Journalism and Mass Communications department.

This little beauty was a favorite amongst the employers surveyed in our Interview Series. and was mentioned by many as a school they regularly recruit from. Can’t blame ’em really, because their BA degrees in Animation, Video/Digital art, Graphic Design and Illustration when combined with electives from their Studio Art, Video/Digital Art, Visual Communication and Graphic Design concentrations create superhero-like graduates (think: unstoppable).

The National Institute of Design is India’s foremost institution teaching design and animation, and considering how good the animation talent is coming out of India these days, that says a lot. The school’s mingling courses in Graphic Design, Animation Film Design, Film Video Communication and Exhibition (Spatial) Design are turning out incredibly artsy animators that are providing steady competition for American animation studios. While nobody in animation and gaming likes to talk about outsourcing, NID is the school training the animation masters behind the trend, training artists as well as software experts. They’re good, real good.

You will notice a massive amount of Vancouver animation schools making the list, but this should come as no surprise given their massively successful animation scene and ability to usurp a large amount of animation graduates. The Emily Carr University of Art and Design is another Vancouver-based art and design school to proudly make our list. But we couldn’t pick just one program from Emily Carr to add to this list because the strength of the school is mutually reinforcing the artistic education of its students via multidisciplinary groups, electives and through major/minor combos. The mix of courses between the school’s well-known Animation major , Interactive + Social Media Arts major , Communication Design major. Industrial Design major. Interaction Design major. Film, Video + Integrated Media major. Illustration major and Visual Arts major have created a symbiotic place to learn an amazingly-broad spectrum of visual and computer-aided arts. Students enjoy their university experience at Emily Carr due to the incredibly talented student body, students with whom they get to network and work on a daily basis. This talented student body provides regular doses of inspiration and artistic creativity.

How to manage the torrent of social media conversations and increase your productivity!

By Kim Bale
Socialbrite staff

O ne of the things we often hear from nonprofits and social enterprises is: How do I manage the torrent of social media conversations coming at me?

The answer used to be: Painstakingly and one conversation at a time. But a new crop of social media tools aims to tamp down the social media gusher by letting you update, monitor, manage and maintain several communication outlets at once. (While it s sometimes hard to know what counts as a social media dashboard, we re not including a wide range of customer relationship management (CRM) or social media monitoring tools here.)

When selecting a dashboard for personal or professional use, you should consider such items as cost, analytics and which social networks they support, among other things. Our list is meant to feature some of the breakout social media dashboards in the space and highlight their distinguishing features to make the selection process a bit easier.

Here are 10 of our favorite social media dashboard tools:

Threadsy: Unify your email, social networks

1 Threadsy is an intuitive, easy-to-use dashboard that allows organizations to connect through multiple email accounts as well as Facebook and Twitter. Free to use, Threadsy is great for managing your nonprofit or business s brand from one clean dashboard across the big names in social media platforms. With no fees and no downloads, this service should make a splash in the space for both personal use and use by your organization.

Myweboo: Organize your information streams

2 Haven t heard of Myweboo. That s OK. This upstart startup invites users to discover, browse and read popular streams and share them with friends and followers. You or your organization can choose from a wide variety of “applications” to connect to and stream to a dashboard from categories like news, social, fashion, photo and video. These streams can be viewed together of filtered from “My Dashboard” and then easily shared via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, Delicious and other networks. You re in complete control of which sites will make up your dashboard. Free to use, Myweboo is run by an appealing brother-and-sister pair of young tech stars.

Hootsuite: Integrate all your platforms

3 Our personal favorite is Hootsuite because of the depth of its products and services. Nonprofits and cause organizations can update multiple social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook and more) from a computer or iPhone, Android or BlackBerry device. A team of users can track results of their interactions and create a dashboard that will work efficiently with their preferred social streams. Hootsuite offers two versions. One is free and aggregates up to five social network and two RSS feeds; it stores stat history for 30 days and is ad supported. For $5.99 a month, your organization can enjoy unlimited capabilities for a single user, with each additional user costing $10 per month.

Spredfast: For teams of social marketers

4 Spredfast allows an organization not only to manage its social media presence but also to monitor and measure its voice across multiple social media channels from one easy-to-use dashboard. A great choice for organizations with multiple hands in social media marketing efforts, Spredfast offers superb organizational tools that help identify and assign tasks to multiple users across multiple social media sites ranging from Facebook and Twitter to LinkedIn and blogging platforms. It also lets you publish video to many video sites at once, similar to TubeMogul. Free for 30 days, Spredfast has pricing tiers that start around $212 per month for nonprofits. See the new writeup on Spredfast on our sister site,

MediaFunnel: Collaborative, permission-based system

5 Coordinate and manage your nonprofit s social media presence with MediaFunnel. a collaboration platform that lets you navigate and moderate online conversations about your brand. One interesting feature: You can use MediaFunnel to manage your team member s social media updates say, by holding your intern s tweets in a queue until approved by a supervisor (roles include admins, publishers and contributors). Chiefly geared to businesses, MediaFunnel makes it easy to combine several social media accounts and to offer solutions for presenting a brand s presence through multiple voices. Scheduled tweets, brand alerts and tweets via email or SMS are supported.

CoTweet: Advanced features for Enterprise users

6 CoTweet is used by thousands of individuals and employees at nonprofits and corporations around the world. The free Standard edition is limited to a few Twitter accounts and geared to a couple of team members. The paid Enterprise edition supports Facebook, too, and is geared to brands more deeply engaged in social marketing, brand building and customer support. It supports an unlimited number of users, advanced workflow, more analytics, third-party integrations including productivity tools, unlimited conversation history for deeper customer relationships, a mobile app, rich profiles of fans and followers and more.

Seesmic: Free, clean credible

Netvibes: Share your widgets with the world

8 Netvibes lets organizations keep track of the news and trends that matter, create unique personal and public dashboards and share these public dashboards or sites with anyone, anywhere, at any time. You can easily create fun and personalized widgets detailing the weather, to-do lists, Twitter feeds, Facebook posts or Flickr updates, among many others and post them to both personal and public dashboards. Organizations can choose a theme, name their pages and organize them with tabs and share them with the world.

TweetDeck: Connect with your contacts

9 If you re a Twitter aficionado, you may already use TweetDeck. which works on the Mac, PC, Linux, iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android. It connects organizations with contacts across Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Foursquare, Google Buzz and many more. Free of charge, TweetDeck allows users to schedule future posts, manage multiple accounts and update several social media sites at once to maintain consistency. One unique feature allows users to send tweets longer than 140 characters through smart cross-posting to both a Buzz and Twitter account. Twitter is a desktop app and not Web-based, so one thing we don t like is the inability to manage the app s font size on different screens.

Brizzly: Simplify your updating

10 Brizzly simplifies your social media browsing and updating experience while taking some of the work out of keeping up to date with trends and followers. It lets you update on Twitter and Facebook. Its Brizzly Guide helps explain trending topics on Twitter. Brizzly is free.

Tools that can integrate your social networks

There are, of course, other social media dashboard solutions for the enterprise. One good choice for businesses is Awareness. which lets your team publish, manage, measure and engage across multiple social media channels.

Another is Sprout Social. Social media tools for business, a social media management suite. We listed Sprout Social in our roundup of Paid social media monitoring services .

Also, don t forget other tools that can integrate your social networks:

• You might want to try using a browser as your social media dashboard. Flock has been the most social of the social browsers for the past five years. Others say Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox will get you a social media dashboard with the right add-ons/extensions. And Marc Andreessen s upcoming RockMelt (Mashable review ) will take it a step further, requiring you to log into Facebook before using it.

• Unilyzer has a social media dashboard to unify your Twitter, Facebook and YouTube accounts.

• We re impressed by the private beta of Nimble and will report back when we ve used it more extensively.

• TwitterFeed lets you feed your blog to Twitter, Facebook and more.

• is a free service that makes it easy to update your social networks, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Flickr and Delicious.

• RowFeeder is a tool to cross-post, to track conversations on Twitter and Facebook and to create analytical reports.

What s your favorite social media dashboard? Please add a comment.

Major Harris is used to setting records.

As one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever don the gold and blue, he led the Mountaineer football team to a perfect season and was a Heisman Trophy finalist.

On Friday, Oct. 22, the former Mountaineer quarterback and College Hall of Famer will once again take the lead as parade marshal for the 2010 Homecoming Parade. He joins hundreds of alumni. students and other participants at this annual event that kicks off Homecoming festivities on High Street in downtown Morgantown.

Harris will also be honored during halftime of Saturday’s (Oct. 23) WVU –Syracuse game, which kicks off at noon at Milan Puskar Stadium .

Harris was the first quarterback in NCAA history to rush for 2,000 yards and pass for 5,000 yards during his three-year Mountaineer career. In 1988, he led West Virginia to an 11-0 regular season record and a meeting against No. 1-ranked Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl national championship game.

“We are excited that our own college football great will be serving as our 2010 parade marshal,” said Stephen L. Douglas. president and CEO of the WVU Alumni Association. “Major Harris has had significant influence on how college football is played today and we are thrilled that he will be celebrating his alma mater’s homecoming with us.”

After struggling through the early part of his redshirt freshman season, the elusive signal caller had a breakout game against East Carolina in 1987 and never looked back. He produced 1,200 yards passing and 615 rushing yards in helping WVU to a John Hancock Sun Bowl berth against Thurman Thomas-led Oklahoma State.

The following season, he was nearly perfect in directing West Virginia to the school’s first-ever undefeated, untied regular season and a matchup against No. 1-ranked Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl for the national championship.

In getting the Mountaineers there, Harris baffled opponents all season with his daring, unpredictable, wide-open style. That was never more evident than in West Virginia’s 51-30 dismantling of long-time nemesis Penn State. Harris outgained the entire Penn State team, 301-292, and produced the school’s most exciting run ever in the first quarter of that game.

As the play clock wound down, Harris forgot the play he had called in the huddle. As soon as the ball was snapped, the entire West Virginia team went in one direction and Harris went the other.
He faked out the entire Penn State team leaving no less than seven tacklers grabbing air on the way to the most gorgeous touchdown run in school history—a mere 26-yards forever embedded in the memories of West Virginia football fans.

As a junior, Harris was equally spectacular despite not having as strong a supporting cast. He passed for 2,058 yards and rushed for 936 yards to finish third in the 1989 Heisman Trophy balloting. He earned first team Kodak All-America honors and was a second team AP and Football News All-American. In 1988-89, Harris was voted ECAC player of the year.

He established a WVU record with 7,334 total yards and became one of just two quarterbacks in Division I history to pass for more than 5,000 yards and rush for more than 2,000 yards. His 2,161 rushing yards rank eighth on the school all-time rushing list.
After the completion of his junior year, Harris left school early and was drafted in the 12th round by the Los Angeles Raiders, though he would never play a down in the NFL .

Instead Harris played one season in the Canadian Football League with the British Columbia Lions before spending parts of the next five years in the Arena Football League.

In 1995, Harris returned to WVU to complete his degree in physical education. In 2010, he was inducted into the College Football Home of Fame and is a member of the WVU Sports Hall of Fame (1999). He and his wife reside in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pa.
