Scholarships for Military Members

While looking for money for school many servicemembers, veterans, and their families tend to overlook more than $300 million of military — and veteran — related scholarships and grants. These scholarships often go unclaimed due to the following three myths:

1. Military education benefits eliminate the need for scholarships and grants.

• False The truth is that Tuition Assistance is limited to about $750 a class and usually only covers tuition and a limited amount of fees. This means that you have to pay for books, fees, and other items. There are hundreds of scholarships and grants specifically designed to supplement these education related costs, so you don t have to.

2. Scholarships are too difficult to win and applying requires too much work.

• It is true that some scholarships require a written essay. But, it is important to remember that scholarship and grant applications vary widely, and some require nothing more than a short application. Besides you should think of it this way: It may be the only essay you ever get paid to write.

3. Scholarships are too difficult to find.

• False Many scholarships go unclaimed because students don t know where to look. Fortunately, there is a great online resource to help servicemembers find the scholarship and learn how, where, and when to apply. Visit the Military.com s Scholarship Finder today and get started on your way to finding free money for school.

Here are some quick tips to help your search:

Do your homework. Take advantage of the free online scholarship search at Military.com s Scholarship Finder. The Scholarship Finder lists over 1,000 scholarships from a variety of sources.
Don t limit yourself. You qualify for non-military related scholarships too. Visit your local library to find scholarship directories that list awards based on age, state of residence, cultural background, and field of study.
Search in your military community. Many service aid organizations and associations, like the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, offer scholarships, grants, and low interest loans to help cover education expenses. Click here to find out more about your Service Aid Organization s education assistance programs.
It s never too soon to start your scholarship search. Many scholarship application deadlines are as early as a year in advance.

Remember: Not applying for scholarships is like turning down free money. Get started on your search for scholarships today visit the Scholarship Finder .

FBS: FOOTBALL BOWL SUBDIVISION
(BCS & Other Division I Football Index Page)

Get the Best Fight Songs (HQ Stereo) on 20 Different Music CD’s. Please Help Support This Site.

Welcome to the “LARGEST” College Football Fight Song web site in the universe, where all the songs are now in MP3 format. I have always been a fan of college football and especially the Nittany Lions of Penn State. All the MP3’s on this site have been compressed 11 to 1 in size and reformatted in mono, all to help save webspace. It has been a rough ride these past 2-3 years as interest seems to hae waned a bit and it is more costly to keep the site up for FREE! And now certain schools like Miami (FL), Washington and Utah forced me to remove the school’s songs from the website, even though they are free to download and isn’t this kind of like FREE advertisement for those schools? And all those millions of dollars the football programs bring and to top that with the price of tuition, you would think they would want to share the songs with their alumni, current students and fans of those schools. If anyone can help, please do to get those songs back up and available on this site. I am also in the process of adding as many or all of the football schools from the FCS (Football Championship Subdivision). After completion, there will be well over 1,000 total songs for you FREE to download. I will also be reformatting all the music CD’s, moving teams to the correct conference CD and adding all the new schools, even the FCS schools.

Also, you will still be able to purchase your favorite school songs via email for $5 or less per school or per conference. Especially the FCS conferences, where 1-2 schools songs will be prevailant throughout. You will want the higher quality songs for your ringtone(s) on your cellphone and iPhones. But please don’t forget about the CD’s, they also help in the funding for this site or shopping at one of the sponsors on this site. And if you are not considering a purchase at this time, please consider a friendly donation of $10 or $20 or any value at that to make sure this website stays up and running for many years to come and into the future. Thank you very much for your continued support.

College Football Fight Music CD’s (21 Volumes)

My College Football Fight Music CD/MP3 Store has changed many times over the years as the NCAA Football Conference realignment is a never ending process as money dictates which schools play in the
(5) major BCS conferences and who play in the other FBS mid-major football conferences. My collection now contains 21 different CD’s, with Volumes 1 & 13 focus on all five of the power five conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, PAC-12, SEC and Notre Dame). These same conferences are also focused on: Volumes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 19, 20 and 14 (alma maters). The mid-major conferences, which now include the AAC, CONF-USA, MAC, MWC an the SUNBELT are representive on Volumes 9, 10, 11, 12 and 15 (alma maters). I also now have different fight music CD’s (Volumes 16, 17 and 18 (alma maters) focusing on the schools from the FCS (Football Championship Subdivision). Of course it is impossible to include all the songs on the CD’s, thats for both the FCS and FBS CD’s, so you can also purchase the individual songs from each college for only $1-$5 each depending on the number of songs I have available. And if you already purchased in the past, at least a donation would be of great help to me. To send a donation, just click on the PayPal banner just below. Thank you very much.

Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery is the second national cemetery built in Ohio and the 119th in the national cemetery system.

Currently, there are more than one million veterans living in the State of Ohio and approximately 540,000 residing in the cemetery s service area. The first two phases of construction, covering 65 acres of 273-acre cemetery, included 21,000 gravesites, 10,100 columbaria niches and 3,800 in-ground garden niches for cremated remains. At full capacity, Ohio Western Reserve can provide burial space for 106,000 eligible veterans and dependents, beyond the year 2050.

Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery lies approximately 45 miles south of Cleveland in Medina County near the town of Seville. The cemetery s name refers to the part of the Northwest Territory formerly known as the Connecticut Western Reserve, a tract of land in Northeast Ohio reserved by the State of Connecticut when it ceded its claims for western lands to the U.S. government in 1786.

Monuments and Memorials
Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery features a pathway that is lined with memorials that honor America s veterans, which have been donated by various organizations. As of 2017, there were 139 memorials, most commemorating events and troops of 20th century war.

Financial aid for military spouses in college

The federal government offers several Financial Student Aid Programs. These programs offer you extremely low interest loans and grants (free money). Unlike the GI Bill, these programs are paid by the Dept. of Education through the school; however, like the GI Bill, Federal Student Aid is designed to assist you in meeting the cost of tuition, books, fees, and living expenses while you go to school. That means that once the school has taken its share, the remaining loan or grant balance goes to you.

Financial Student Aid Eligibility

It doesn’t matter whether you are active duty, reserve, veteran, retiree, on GI Bill, or not — you should be taking advantage of these programs. There are numerous examples of even senior active duty members receiving federal loans and large grants. Remember: Grants are gifts that you don’t repay!

Eligibility for most federal student aid is based on financial need and on several other factors. The most basic eligibility requirements to receive federal student aid are as follows:

  • You must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen,
  • You must have a valid Social Security number,
  • You must register (if you haven’t already) with the Selective Service, if you’re a male between the ages of 18 and 25,
  • You must maintain satisfactory academic progress (defined as having at least a 2.0 GPA and being on track to graduate within 150% of the normal timeframe) in college or career school, and
  • You must show you’re qualified to obtain a postsecondary education by:
    • having a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate;
    • meeting other federally approved standards your state establishes; or
    • completing a high school education in a home school setting approved under state law.

Readmission Requirements: Was your college enrollment interrupted when you were called to active duty? For information on returning to the college you previously attended, see the Dept. of Education Q A website for guidance on approaching your school when you re ready to reenroll.

Applying for FSA

Applying for federal student aid is quicker and easier than ever. You can complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at https://fafsa.ed.gov.

Money Saving Tip: FAFSA is a Free Application for Federal Student Aid; however there are some websites that offer to complete the FAFSA for you, for upwards of $50. The FAFSA form only takes a relatively short time to complete. It is worth your time to complete it yourself.

Every accredited school that is recognized by the Education Department will be eligible for some form of FSA. The school’s you select will send you information on how to get the funding you need to reach your education goals.

Best Online Colleges For Military – Distance Learning for Active Duty Army

Online Colleges For Military Students

You’re serving in the military, and you want to continue your education at an online college.

Problem: As a military student, you’re facing an unpredictable schedule, at best.

GetEducated.com surveyed military advisors at online colleges to put together these helpful tips that showcase what to look for in an online college before you enroll.

Tip 1: Look for online colleges for military students that will be flexible if you are called away

If you are in the military, you may be deployed without warning. Your online college needs to be sensitive to this issue. Find out in advance what the school’s policy is regarding unpredictable absences and homework delays.

For instance, at Columbia College (based in Missouri), a military student who didn’t have advance warning and is deployed while taking online college classes can request an incomplete or an excused withdrawal.

In some cases military students may even be given more time to finish their assignments, says Gary Massey, Associate Dean for Adult Higher Education at Columbia Online.

“We will deal with things that are out of their control,” says Massey.

Similarly, military students at Colorado Technical University can expect flexibility from instructors, says Arthur Macias, Senior National Admissions Advisor of the school’s military division.

If a military student is called away for a few days and can’t get to a computer, “our instructors will let them turn it in later if that’s what they need to do,” says Macias.

“When dealing with military personnel, you have to realize you’re also dealing with the unexpected,” says Randi Reich Cosentino, senior vice president of academic administration at Strayer University. <>

Strayer “freezes” courses if military students are deployed or transferred. The students can then resume the course when they are able to, without having to start the course over again.

“This gives them peace of mind,” Cosentino says, “so personnel don’t hesitate in signing up for courses.”

Tip 2: Make sure your online course doesn’t require “real time” participation

Flexible scheduling is key for a military student enrolled in online college classes. Be wary of classes with live lectures and “synchronous” or real-time discussions, especially if you are in another time zone, halfway around the world.

Some schools offer live lectures—but also provide downloadable versions for students who can’t make it. This is the case with Colorado Technical.

“We archive lectures for all students,” says Macias.

Tip 3: Look for an online military college that offers easy, 24/7 access to information

Depending on where you are stationed, you might not have access to a computer. You also might not be able to phone the United States, especially if a school’s customer service lines operate only on a 9 to 5, U.S. schedule.

These days many online education schools offer the ability to use cellphones to download class material, check assignments, message instructors, and receive grades.

For example, says Macias, Colorado Technical offers “CTU Mobile” —a cellphone interface that allows easy access to information about a student’s academic work.

Many online colleges staff military bases with representatives so military students can easily access a real live human being if they encounter concerns about program access.

Others, such as Colorado Technical, offer round-the-clock phone support with financial aid and admissions advisors, as well as web chat functionality.

Tip 4: See if your college offers downloadable e-books or CD-ROMs, which will save you from having to tote heavy books from unit to unit

Macias says military students ask: ‘’We already have 50 pounds of life supplies in the field; if I’m moving from one unit to another, what do I do?'”

CTU ships books through military post five weeks before classes start, says Macias. Undergraduate and associate degree students are provided with e-books, but graduate students are issued copies digitally and in hardcover (when they are able to receive them).

Strayer offers a majority of its books as e-books, says Reich, with chapters available online. Military Students primarily use laptops to access these texts. “We do make some lectures downloadable to the iPhone, but it’s not a large contingent,” says Cosentino.

Excelsior College, on the other hand, offers CD-ROM-based courses. “They were designed for the military and they work very well for servicemembers who were deployed and don’t have Internet connections,” says Sue Dewan, executive director of the Center for Military Education at Excelsior.

Some students prefer “real” books, especially older students. American Military University mails textbooks to deployed online students, says Jim Sweizer, vice president of military education.

“For many years, we did provide textbooks to students and still do for the majority of classes. You get a mix of students—the older ones tend to like the textbooks and the younger ones like the books in electronic fashion.”

Sweizer worries that students who depend on downloading books electronically might be without texts if they can’t get Internet access. On the other hand, he says, ff the school were to provide pre-loaded handheld devices, it couldn’t put as much information on as it could provide on a website.

“The amount of coursework that you can insert into these handheld devices is not as tech-savvy as what you can do if it’s in an electronic classroom over the Internet,” he says. Also, course materials on handhelds aren’t interactive, while web courses can offer this functionality—letting online military students feel like they are part of a classroom experience, even when they are in a war zone.

5 Top Military Spouse Benefits

Military spouses face many challenges so it’s nice to have benefits to balance the scales. Spouses can find many advantages ranging from educational benefits to employment opportunities. Many programs are provided automatically upon entrance to military service or marriage to a service member. Listed below are 5 top benefits not provided automatically, but available to military spouses to utilize.

1. Military Spouse Career Advancement Account (MyCAA):

One of the most advantageous programs offered to military spouses is the MyCAA Scholarship. This program offers up to $4,000 in financial assistance to military spouses who are pursuing any of the following offered by an institute aligned with the MyCAA Program :

Spouses of active duty, guard, and reserve members holding the ranks of E-1 to E-5, W-1 to W-2, and O-1 to O-2 are eligible, and must be able to begin and complete their program while the military member is on Title 10 military orders.

2. Family Service Members Group Life Insurance (FSGLI):

Military spouses are eligible to receive up to $100,000 in life insurance coverage. Military members can elect to enroll their family members in this program for coverage of $10,000 to $100,000. Spouse and dependent coverage may not exceed the coverage held by the service member, and children are restricted to $10,000. Contact your Military Personnel Office for enrollment information.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has established this small business loan program for veterans and spouses. Its purpose is to assist with the initial costs in establishing a small business, or costs related to expanding a small business. Low interest rates are assigned to the loans, typically ranging from 2.25%-4.75%. The SBA guarantees up to 85% of the total loan, with a maximum loan amount of $500,000.

4. Transferred GI Bill Benefits:

Education benefits can be transferred from service members to their spouses and children. Once the military member has reached the required time in service, he or she may elect to assign a portion or all of their GI Bill benefits to a family member. Benefits may be used while the military member is still serving in the Armed Forces. Spouses are able to use the benefits for up to 15 years after the military member separates from the Armed Forces, and children may use the benefits until they reach 26 years of age. Children may also be eligible for additional benefits, such as monthly housing allowances. Your installation’s Education Office and the Veteran’s Affairs (VA) office can provide additional details.

5. Military Spouse Preference (MSP) Program:

With unemployment remaining high, any advantage that can help to secure a desired position is helpful. Under the MSP, military spouses are given preferential employment placement in vacant Department of Defense (DoD) civilian positions. These vacancies may fall under either civil service or Appropriated/Non-Appropriates Funds. Please contact you local Civilian Personnel Office (CPO) or Human Resources Office (HRO) for current vacancies.
