Top secret hotel bargains to die for from last minute websites –

Last minute merchants can still be heroes with top secret hotel bargains to die for

If you can hold your nerve, leaving it all to chance can be the key to a dream get away without busting the bank

For some years now my nickname has been lastminute.com.

Don’t get me wrong, I always get the job done but not without causing considerable stress and trauma to those unlucky enough to live with me.

Journalists never miss an opportunity to smugly proclaim that a deadline focuses the mind.

However, when that same 11th hour 59th minute tendency spills over into your private life, you’ve got serious problems.

So it will come as some relief to last minute merchants everywhere that this irritating trait – known to have sparked huge rows and in rather more extreme cases end relationships – can actually be a virtue.

In fact, the later you book a ‘Top Secret Hotel’ with lastminute.com, the better.

Now I have to be honest, with just hours to spare, a seasoned chancer like myself was unsettled at the prospect of booking a hotel in London on a busy sunny June weekend.

Throw into the equation that the identity of the establishment I am booking is ‘top secret’, and that my wife is celebrating a landmark birthday, even the worst adrenalin junkie would have to turn down this assignment.

‘Are you sure about this?,’ she asks. ‘I’m serious. I don’t want to be in a Travelodge on my birthday.’ (Apologies to Alan Partridge and Travelodges everywhere).

‘Relax,’ I nervously reply. ‘What could possibly go wrong?’

Well, the answer is many things.

Remarkably, this apparently madcap scheme actually went off without a hitch and earned me brownie points I’ll be cashing in for the next two decades.

Mystery hotel deals

It all begins with a tantalisingly cryptic conversation with my enigmatic booker Laura.

Bizarrely, she knows the exact secret hotel under consideration but is bound by regulations normally only seen at MI5 not to reveal its true identity until fully booked.

The conversation is great fun; it’s charades for tourists with a twist.

‘Okay, so this is a wonderfully located hotel, five star, double room, within walking distance of the Houses of Parliament,’ she teases.

Given that there is a luxury four star in Covent Garden for slightly less, this is becoming fascinating game of hospitality roulette.

But here’s the rub. As you fumble in the dark, you are getting a serious bargain in return. In this case – almost half price!

‘So will I go ahead and book that Mr McNamara?,’ Laura asks.

Like a heavily perspiring contestant on Who Wants To Book A Luxury Hotel?, I glance around at the audience – my wife and mother. I don’t want to let them down but boy does this sound good.

As I agree, my life of booking ropey hotels flashes before me – the dodgy B B in Limerick and that damp twin double in Bangor in 1995.

But we couldn’t have done better as Laura finally informs me we have bagged two swipe cards to the five star InterContinental London Westminster .

Mystery hotel deals

On reflection, given that lastminute.com has an arsenal of ‘Top Secret’ four and five star hotels in 250 locations – including Dublin, London, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris and Rome – there was little to be concerned about.

It works because the very best deals are released when hoteliers know there is little chance their vacant rooms will be filled.

So don’t even think about booking until at least a week in advance, if you want to save up to 35% on the bill.

For those of you reaching for the beta blockers, wait for this. Masochists who really want to chance their arm can book a mystery hotel on the day of checking in using the lastminute.ie mobile app.

This is where things get really hairy. You allow the site to tag your location, it generates a number of available options within range – and then leads you to the hotel issuing directions on the phone.

However, we arrive 24 hours later, pleasantly surprised that the entrance – a stone’s throw from Scotland Yard if it helps you sleep – is directly opposite the exit of St James’s Park Tube Station.

We whirr through the revolving doors of this stunning former government building where we are met with soothing white marble d cor and shafts of sunlight beaming into the hotel’s elegant lobby.

And when we open the door to our luxury hideaway, we instantly fall in love with a sumptuous bed you could sleep in for seven days solid and a rain shower you could stay in until the fire brigade arrived.

It soon becomes clear why this location is so special. We turn right at the hotel entrance and are enthralled by the reveal of London’s political ampitheatre.

Straight ahead is the austere beauty of Westminster Abbey, behind which the imposing Houses of Parliament and Big Ben loom large. To left we spy the London eye and the South Bank beyond.

It suddenly dawns on us that after all the intrigue and drama in booking it, our fabulous hotel is within walking distance of every tourist landmark on the list, including Buckingham Palace.

On this sweltering Thursday afternoon we take a spin on the London Eye to get an overview of the bustling capital.

Mystery hotel deals

Light-headed from our dizzying revolution, it’s time for lunch where, giddy at the prospect of some serious grazing without two young children in tow, we tuck in at the wonderful Carluccios in Covent Garden.

After a cheeky siesta we are out again, this time opting for a succulent medium cooked burger and glass of wine in the Intercontinental’s Blue Boar Smokehouse where World Cup is in full swing on the big screen.

At this point you may have realised that the only thing more important than where I lay my head, is where I fill my stomach.

So another culinary highlight is a trip to fabulous Bentley’s Oyster Bar and Grill which we visit the following evening to kick off the birthday celebrations.

Here we feast on trays of mouth watering oysters and scallops at the establishment of our very own Irish chef Richard Corrigan.

The pi ce de r sistance, however, is our final dining appointment – this time on the banks of the Thames on the wonderfully classy eighth floor of the South Bank’s Oxo Tower

Our truffle waffles, rabbit and chocolate (not eaten at the same time you understand) are utterly delicious. This gastronomic reverie is most definitely the highlight of our trip.

As our divine food digests we stroll across the Thames with St Paul’s Cathedral in our sights, occasionally humming songs from Mary Poppins (don’t tell a soul).

This excursion has been nothing short of a triumph.

But as with all stories of courage and valour, this one comes with a salutary lesson – being a last minute merchant won’t get you tickets to see Kevin Spacey.

We stand in the returns queue of the Old Vic theatre in the vain hope we might bag gold dust tickets for the last night of the critically acclaimed Clarence Darrow.

We can only watch helplessly as two couples in front of us saunter in clutching the last pair of unwanted cut price tickets.

Crestfallen, we traipse home amidst some muttering about always trying to do things on the last minute.

Thankfully, our misery is short lived back at the hotel where our turn down service has been executed and soothing pairs of towelled slippers beckon at our bedside.

Am just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience to me with Expedia. We booked a 5 star mystery hotel in Melbourne for $491 with Expedia and upon them revealing the hotel we found out that in fact the same hotel was cheaper ($450) on their own website. When I called to say I felt I was mislead due to the fact it obviously wasn t the lowest rate guaranteed and there was not even a discount which they claimed would be up to 40% and so low it cant be advertised . The only reason it wasn t advertised it seems is because it was a rip off. The call centre was very unhelpful and refused to refund the difference so that we could at least get the hotel for the $450 though this would still not be a discount. They said it did not apply to the mystery hotels and they did not price match! I also asked them what discount did we actually received for which they could not answer. So various emails and a long phone conversation and nothing was resolved. Just wondering if anyone else has been deceived in this way and what did you do?

Word of warning for anyone thinking of booking with Expedia steer clear of the mystery hotels! Better still steer clear of Expedia altogether because if something goes wrong with your booking it s unlikely they will resolve it fairly or logically! After spending time writing various emails and 45 minutes on the phone being shouted out by a manager to top it off all I can say it was a frustrating and unpleasant experience. Staff a are very scripted, uninformed and rude guess thats what you would expect from an overseas call centre.

Sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction.

It s most unfortunate that the Mystery Hotel turned out to be more expensive than that of the hotels own website. However there is a few points which may help you for any future reservations, whether it be for Expedia or any other site offering this type of sale , and hopefully this will help you understand how it works on the inside.

1. Mystery Hotel/Deal is an agreement between the hotel and the website. The only criteria enforced by the website, is that the discount offered to this website is lower than what the hotel offers to any other site. So it s calculated on the percentage of the discount, not the a risk rate. If Hotel X offers a 10% discount to its advertised rate to any other website, all they are required to do, is to beat that 10% and guarantee that percentage exclusivity to that website alone. It actually had no bearing in other advertised rates. Wotif Mystery operates on the same principles.

2. The Up to 40% off as advertised by Expedia is across any of their advertised hotels – it doesn t have to be for any particular hotel. As long as that is applicable to one of their advertised hotels, it has fulfilled advertising obligations. Also, that 40% is off the Rack Rate of that room type as advertised by the hotel, not off any of the other discounted rates available anywhere on the net.

3. As you ve already stated, price guarantees usually does not apply to Mystery Deals or any undisclosed opaque sales.

Whilst I understand you ve had an unpleasant experience, it is probably best you put it down to a learning experience. Expedia by volume is the largest agency in the world, and to wholly write off a website based on one poor incident maybe detrimental to selection of options for your future travels. And also to do the shopping around before any future reservations.

Luxury for Less: The Secret to Booking Secret Hotel Rooms

Mystery hotel dealsWant great accommodation at dirt-cheap prices? Why not try secret hotels?

What are secret hotel rooms?

Even the best hotels can t fill all their rooms 100% of the time, so they sell the excess at deep discounts. But if everybody knows about the price cuts, their reputation might suffer and their other guests probably won t be very happy. So even though these rooms are sold on certain booking sites, the hotel names are not publicized.

Why book secret hotel rooms?

Because they re great value!

You often can t get a better deal even if you booked directly with the hotel. In fact, you know how some hotels have a lowest online price guarantee? If you check the fine print, they usually say specifically that they will not match secret hotel deals.

Why not book secret hotel rooms?

Because there are fewer options and less information about the room. If you have very particular preferences — hot tub on the balcony, salon-grade hair straightener, elliptical machine in the fitness room — you should probably go with a regularly priced hotel room.

And because these are unsold hotel rooms, naturally they re only available at the last minute. You ll have to make the booking quite close to your actual trip.

Also, the booking site won t let you see the hotel name from the get-go. You ll have to make a decision based on the few details provided — usually star rating, neighborhood, check-in/check-out times and amenities.

But don t worry about this; there are ways to uncover the hotel s identity and I ll go through them soon.

Where can I book secret hotel rooms?

  • Hotwire Hot Rate Hotels (worldwide)
  • Priceline Express Deals (mostly U.S.)
  • Travelocity Top Secret Hotels (mostly U.S.)
  • lastminute.com Top Secret Hotels (mostly UK and Europe)

Ready? Let s start with a hotel search.

To find a secret hotel deal, you start by entering your stay dates and destination. If there are secret hotels available, they will appear in your search results. The page should look like this:

Mystery hotel deals Screenshot from lastminute.com

Once you click on one particular hotel listing, you should see more information.

In this example, I went with the top result. This is what I saw next:

Mystery hotel deals

Mystery hotel deals

Here are a few things you should note:

  • The location.
  • The star rating.
  • The regular price.
  • The room type.
  • The TripAdvisor rating and number of reviews.
  • Scan the description for a distinctive feature. In this case, this hotel won a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, so I highlighted and copied that sentence for later.

How can I figure out the hotel name?

There are three ways to do it:

1. Google the hotel description

The booking site often uses the same description for both its secret hotel page and its regular listing page for the same hotel, so all you have to do is copy a snippet of the description and paste it onto Google. Choose the most unusual phrase or sentence in the listing to get the most relevant search results. If the secret hotel has a distinctive feature — a rooftop whirlpool, for example — your job would be super easy!

Here s what happened when I pasted the sentence I copied from the listing onto Google.

Mystery hotel deals

As you can see, the listing for the same hotel from another booking website immediately appears in the search results. (Sorry I blocked the hotel name; I m a lastminute.com affiliate and I m not entirely sure I m allowed to reveal the name of a secret hotel.)

2. Check other hotel listings on the website

You don t have to leave the booking website to find out what the hotel name is.

Look at for all available hotel rooms in the city, then narrow down the results based on the features of the secret hotel.

Some sites make this process really easy by showing how much the room usually costs, so all you have to do is find the hotel room that costs the same. You can also sort the results by star rating and neighborhood. If there are only three hotels that match your criteria, then the secret hotel must be one of them. Dig down deeper into the details in the hotel descriptions, matching the amenities of the secret hotel with each regular listing.

In my example, lastminute.com showed the hotel s regular price, so I quickly found a match. I checked out the listing and look what I found: same star rating, same price, same room type, same TripAdvisor rating and same number of TripAdvisor rating!

Mystery hotel deals

3. Pay attention to its TripAdvisor rating

With lastminute.com Top Secret Hotels and Hotwire Hot-Rates , you re shown both the hotel s star rating and its TripAdvisor review score. You can use these details to confirm your guess.

Head to TripAdvisor, then search for hotels in the same general area with the same user review score. Don t sort your results by star rating; you ll soon see why.

Here s what I saw when I headed to TripAdvisor to see the hotel reviews there:

Mystery hotel deals

See? The same rating and almost the same number of reviews! Maybe someone had just added another review and lastminute.com hadn t updated its listing yet. It also received a Certificate of Excellence. Jackpot!

Pay attention to the star rating; this hotel was listed as a 4.5-star hotel on TripAdvisor and that s because star ratings are quite arbitrary. The same hotel often has different star ratings on different websites.

In identifying a secret hotel, star ratings are more useful for when you re scanning the booking website where you originally found the secret hotel deal. One hotel would have the same star rating on the same website, regardless of whether it s a regular listing or a secret hotel deal. For example, Hotel X may be shown as a regular 4-star hotel on website A, but it s appears as a 3.5-star regular hotel on website B. If both websites have secret hotel deals, then Hotel X would be shown as a 4-star secret hotel deal on website A and as a 3.5-star secret hotel deal on website B.

Is it really always cheaper to book a secret hotel room?

I don t like to make sweeping statements with words like always and never because there are bound to be exceptions to the rule. But I will say this: a secret hotel room deal usually really is the cheapest rate available for that particular room.

If you want to be sure and you have some time to kill, take a couple of minutes to check the price of that hotel room on other hotel booking websites. I recommend HotelsCombined to check a few booking sites at once, TravelPony because its rates are often the lowest (even though they don t usually have many hotels there) and Tingo for its price drop guarantee.

If you ve booked a secret hotel before, let me know how it was for you!
