Solari Hospice Care Outlines Why Nonprofit Status Does Not Equate to Superior Hospice Care

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.–( BUSINESS WIRE )–The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published an article in its February 2 issue titled “Association of Hospice Agency Profit Status, With Patient Diagnosis, Location of Care, and Length of Stay.” Solari Hospice Care wants to emphasize that this article offers no supporting research or evidence that nonprofit hospice programs provide better care to terminally ill patients, are more ethical, or are more compassionate than for-profit hospices.

Solari Hospice Care would like to address the rampant misinformation regarding for-profit hospice care and stress that the fundamental principle of hospice will always be providing people with the greatest quality of life in the time they have left.

With more than one million people in the United States receiving hospice care in 2009 1. it’s apparent that hospices meet a very important need in this country — and to suggest that the primary motivation is financial does a disservice to the devoted hospice staffs caring for their patients facing life-limiting illnesses.

“Having IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit status does not automatically equate to superior care for terminally ill patients,” said Gary W. Polsky , chief executive officer , Solari Hospice Care. “There is no correlation between the profit status of a hospice program and the quality of care provided.”

So what is similar between nonprofit and for-profit hospices? The regulations are identical. All licensed and certified hospices must comply with state law and the Code of Federal Regulations governing hospice care. In addition, Medicare’s reimbursement rate is fixed regardless of the care needs of individual patients, the services patients receive, or the tax status of the hospice providing the care.

“For those who continue to pit nonprofit hospices against for-profit hospices, it’s my opinion that you are fighting the wrong battle,” Polsky remarked. “What we all should be advocating for is helping people to live with dignity and comfort by providing comprehensive and compassionate hospice care. Hospice practices, including quality of care, depend on an organization’s staff and leadership, not tax status. In any field of business, there are ‘good’ companies and ‘bad’ companies, and hospice is no different.”

According to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s (NHPCO) recent comprehensive survey, the Family Evaluation of Hospice Care, detailed analysis of data submitted by hospices shows no difference in family caregivers’ evaluation of the quality of care based on a hospice program’s profit status.

Polsky added, “As a member of the NHPCO, I am proud to say that Solari Hospice Care exceeds NHPCO’s Standards of Practice for Hospice Programs and fully complies with all hospice regulations.”

On February 24th, 2014 my beautiful Mother flew into the loving arms of Jesus at the beautiful and peaceful Hinds Hospice home. She had been truly suffering for a week and I believe she was holding on until she could slip away with dignity. My mother was in the medical field and had many patients who had experienced the love and care of the Hinds Hospice team. She knew during her final days that Hinds Hospice was the best option for herself and her family. At first I did not understand why she wouldn’t want to die peacefully at home. Wouldn’t home be the most comfortable place for your last moments? However, after experiencing the true consideration of the Hinds team I know that my mother was thinking about the well being of her family. As for the comfort of my mother, all I know is that I felt the Lord’s presence as soon as we were welcomed at the car. I know my mother felt The Lord there as well. Nobody wants to have to make decisions about where themselves or loved ones will spend their last days, but choosing The Hinds Hospice home allowed our final moments together on this Earth to be special without the stress of having to make my Mother comfortable. That’s what the Hinds Hospice team is for:)

When curing my father’s leukemia was no longer an option, we wanted him to be comfortable for whatever time he had left. Hinds Hospice helped us to bring him home and taught us how to care for him. We had an amazing 5 weeks with him at home thanks to the wonderful support of Hinds. Dad passed away in March, but the support didn’t stop there. The Center for Grief and Loss has stepped in to support us as we try to find a new normal for our family. Each month I receive mailings from them to help me cope. I will forever be grateful to Hinds Hospice. The best advice I can give is don’t wait to call. Get information early before you are in crisis.

Hinds Hospice helped me through the most difficult time of my life, the loss of my mom.
Not only did my mom receive the best possible care, our family also received amazing support from the hospice team…
We had in home care provided by Hinds Hospice, I honestly don’t know what we would have done without them, mom’s team went beyond the call, if she need supplies or medication,they would make sure it was delivered to us & if wasn’t going to be here in a timely manner her nurse would go out of her way to pick it up & bring it to her… This is just a small example of the wonderful care they provide.
They made sure that we knew at all times what was happening to our mom & what we should expect right up to the end of mom’s life… By inviting hospice into our home, we were able to spend every last moment with mom, we didn’t have to do it alone. They were just a phone call away 24 hrs. a day.
They felt like a part of our family…
Hospice is not only there for the patient, they are there for the family as well, to see that your emotional & spiritual needs are met… They are there through out your time of grief, they don’t just disappear when your loved one leaves you…. They have wonderful events for you to attend, to help with your loss, I really needed that help, it’s a comfort to know that you don’t have to go it alone.
Thanks is just not enough for what these wonderful people provide for those in need…

I had heard of Hinds Hospice and never imaged I would need their services until my Dad’s cancer had reach the point of no return. Looking back now I am even more grateful to have that support at that time by people who truly care.

My sister call Hinds and he spent his last weeks on this earth under the extraordinary care of the staff at the Hinds Hospice Home. My family, 5 brothers and 2 sisters came into town from all over to see our dad through the last weeks of his life. The Hinds Home provided us a place to meet and discuss and spend time with our Dad. When my Dad did pass away I remember the staff asking thoughtful questions that I was not able to think of at the time.

Hinds Hospice, and Hinds Hospice Angel Babies are both amazing. We had Hinds Hospice come out and care for my Dad in his last few weeks here before he passed away of Brain Cancer. My husband and I have lost 2 of our boys

I support Hinds Hospice because it is a wonderful, amazing organization. The staff is compassionate and caring towards patients and their families. I haven’t lived in Fresno all my life, but I can see why Hinds Hospice is celebrating 30 years this year. The service they provide is of the highest quality. In our world today, it is hard to find people that take the time to really listen and care for others. Hinds Hospice staff cares for people and they take time to slow down and listen to their patients, families, donors and friends. I pray that the community continues to embrace them so they will be around for years and years to come.

How do you get found on Google as a nonprofit?

What’s the secret to search engine success? What’s this SEO (search engine optimization) stuff, why is it such a clunky phrase – and what do I need to do so I can forget about it ?

The Secret to Amazing Nonprofit SEO

I first want to talk about the bigger idea behind getting found on search enginges. the nontechnical stuff.

Now, for most of us, our first reaction to getting found on Google is probably one of two things:

  • Either you assume it’s way too technical and complicated for someone like you to understand, because you’re not a techie, right?
  • Or maybe you’re more of the second reaction, where you think, Oh, ok, if I just do x y and z and push this button and put these words in my title, I’ll be at the top of the search results every time, just like magic! Awesome!

But actually… neither of those are quite right.

The truth is it’s a lot simpler than it used to be to rank well on the search engine results, but it isn’t just a one-and-done situation. It takes two things:

  • Figuring out what your audience wants, and then
  • Creating the most helpful, amazing stuff that you can for that audience.

You see, instead of rewarding people who have websites with certain keywords and metadata and know how to game the system, today Google tries to reward people who have websites people love. Simple as that.

Google looks at all the stuff that shows that your website is useful: if they stay on your pages, if people are talking about you with social media and if your website answers the questions your constituents search for.

In other words, these are ALL things that happen naturally when you create a great website!

Question to Ask About Your Website to Fix Your SEO

So instead of thinking first about the technical aspects of getting found on Google. think about these questions:

What would be the most helpful for people who visit my nonprofit’s website? What are they looking for? What questions do they have? What do they need to learn more about?

If you were visiting a nonprofit’s website, what would YOU want to find?

You’d probably want to find out about what the nonprofit does in simple, non-jargony terms, and learn who they are. You’d want to know how they help you and why their work matters. You might want to donate, or volunteer, or learn how to get to their building or when their next event is happening.

And if a nonprofit has created a website that not only answers all those questions but shows that the nonprofit is doing important, exceptional work on a daily basis, the people will stay, come back or even invite their friends.

And more than anything THAT’S what gets you found on Google .

Mission Statement of Hospice of Medina County is to:

Provide the highest quality, supportive care through a medically directed, interdisciplinary team to the terminally ill and their families, regardless of ability to pay.

Enhance the quality of life and ensure the preservation of the fundamental dignity of our clients throughout the dying process in accord with the wishes and directives of the terminally ill and their families.

Hospice of Medina County needs more volunteers for our growing program. Volunteers provide companionship, a listening ear, and relief for the caregivers of Hospice patients. Training is offered twice yearly and lasts for eight weeks.

When you volunteer at Hospice of Medina County, our first step is to focus on you. Our goal is to take what you do best, and give you a new, rewarding avenue in which to use your skills. Our training program prepares you for the job you choose.

Direct Patient Care Volunteer
Interact directly with the terminally ill and their families. Providing caring companionship by: holding a hand, reading, playing cards, preparing meals, running errands, or doing light housekeeping.

Office Volunteer
Provides invaluable help that gives our Hospice staff more time to care for patients. Works on new patient packets, newsletters, filing, and computers.

Fundraising Volunteers
Helps plan and work at our annual fundraising events. Since Hospice of Medina County is a non-profit organization, this is essential.
