Stargazing at the Hotel Rangá observatory

The Hotel Rang luxury hotel is not only renowned for various off-site attractions and adventures but also various leisure activities on-site. One might mention star gazing, which is a marvellous experience for city dwellers, who are not accustomed to the dark, clear skies of Iceland, and astronomers.

The Hotel Rang observatory has a roll-off roof that is by far the most advanced in Iceland. Needless to say, no other hotel in Iceland has anything like this to offer. Here you can star gaze into the black, clear sky and share an intimate evening with the universe and even share a romantic night with your spouse.

The hotel observatory is located about 150 meters from the main building. It houses two high quality astronomical telescopes: A 14 inch Celestron Edge HD Schmidt-Cassegrain reflector and a TEC 160ED APO refractor on a Astrophysics 900 mount. Both telescopes are computerised and on a permanent pier perfect for astrophotography. On a platform by the observatory, we sometimes roll out an 18 inch reflector, the biggest telescope in Iceland. All accessories are also of the highest quality.

Observatory hotelObservatory hotel

The scopes can be turned towards the stars to view amazing detail on Jupiter, see Cassini s Division in the rings of Saturn, and resolve details on the surface of Mars. Even the distant Uranus and Neptune are within your reach. Light pollution around the hotel is minimal, making it the optimal location for viewing the night sky. Thus you can have a relaxing and a luxurious evening when the daytime adventures are over, including a dinner at the gourmet restaurant, sooth your tired legs in the hot tubs and star gaze into the sky with the help of professional equipment.

Observatory hotelObservatory hotel

In the summer, the observatory can be used for solar observing. Using white light filters by Baader Planetarium, we can observer sunspots in great detail. Piggybacked Coronado Solarmax II 60 solar telescope allows us to see more activity on our star, such as prominences and filaments.

The observatory is open every clear night. Guests get a guided tour of the night sky by local astronomers.

Nice quiet naighbourhood

For people who want to unwind and relax away from the big city and township noise, Observatory is the place to be.

Old part of Cape Town

Observatory is an old part of Cape Town and is a bit dodgy compared to other suburbs. I would not recommend Observatory as a tourist destination.

Very trendy and busy. The people there never sleep

Really love Observatory. It s centrally located packed with lots of restaurants and bars.

Arenal Observatory Lodge

Our very comfortable eco-lodge is perfectly positioned directly between the massive Arenal Volcano and deep blue Lake Arenal. No other hotel in La Fortuna, Costa Rica and the Arenal area is so close to the famous volcano and its lovely lake.

Arenal Observatory Lodge is safely located 2.7 kilometers (1.7 miles) from the south side of Arenal Volcano, but the live volcano seems so close that you could reach out and touch it. The perfectly-shaped volcanic cone commands nearly every view at the hotel from the panoramic windows of the Arenal Observatory restaurant to the main buildings and most of the guest rooms. Beautiful Lake Arenal with its many little islands stretches west into the sunset.

Resting on a ridge amid tall pine trees and luxuriant rainforest, Arenal Observatory Lodge is the only hotel that is located inside the Arenal Volcano National Park.

Eleven kilometers (7 miles) of well-maintained hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking trails wind through the Arenal Volcano hotel s 870-acre (352-hectare) property, through primary and secondary rainforest, past waterfalls and across verdant pastures. Plenty of wildlife lives in the area, including three kinds of monkeys, anteaters, coatis, raccoons, deer, and more than 400 species of birds making Arenal Observatory Lodge a preferred destination for bird watching in Costa Rica.

In addition to all of the activities you can enjoy at Arenal Observatory Lodge Spa, our Arenal hotel serves as a great base camp for adventure tours in Arenal like the Sky Trek zip lines, Sky Tram, Arenal Hanging Bridges, hot springs, whitewater rafting and more.

We invite you to stay with us, enjoy our trails and tours, hanging bridges, a refreshing swim in our pool, and relax with a massage in our Spa. Everything you want in one unique place!

Arenal Volcano / La Fortuna Village

After having lain dormant for over 400 years, Arenal Volcano erupted violently on July 29, 1968, wreaking havoc on the local population and creating a lava-scape for miles around its base.

At the Observatory Lodge, nature is bursting at the seams. Tropical flora and fauna abound about the Arenal lodge, while the majestic volcano and its fiery outbursts reflect off the mirror lake at her feet all this right outside your Arenal hotel room at the Observatory Lodge.

My children and I had the time of our lives. The lodge was unbelievable. The volcano was so close, we were able to see it every day and night. The food was very good. Front desk staff was wonderful; they were very accommodating and bent over backwards to help. We appreciate all that they did. Lots to see and do – really just the trip of a lifetime. Thanks so much.

Tara Brandly

We would like to tell you, we had very wonderful days in your lodge. We could experience the volcano, hard rain, beautiful stars, and of course many birds, as we are nature lovers. All experiences were enjoyable. We were so pleased to see many hummingbirds. Thank you so much for your arrangement and all kindness and friendship your staff gave us.

Todd and Cynthia Buchholz

We had a very enjoyable stay at this lodge. The room was lovely, the view spectacular, staff was excellent and always helpful, and restaurant servers were efficient, pleasant and quick to please. Gardens are beautiful and very well kept. Loved the pool. I don´t know if our travels will bring us to Costa Rica, but if so, we will definitely be visiting the Observatory again. Thank you so much for making our trip a wonderful memory for us.

Dennis Frohlich

I have visited the lodge over 10 times, both personally and as a leader with groups. We have always had a wonderful experience. We found the White Hawk Villa spectacular, and the hospitality of the lodge and all employees was exquisite. The Arenal Observatory Lodge is special in every way.

Mary O Boyle

Of our entire 9 days stay in Costa Rica. we (my boyfriend and I) both agree that our favorite place was the Arenal Observatory Lodge. The view was more than we could have hoped for. The rooms were perfectly accommodating. The food was wonderful at both breakfast and dinner. The lava flowing from the volcano, of course, was stupendous. A memory to have forever. The grounds of the lodge were beautiful beyond description.Peaceful, restful!!
