Good prices on most clothing but check all tags before purchase. Some of their boutique clothing is way overpriced. A lot of older styles and polyester type items mixed in with more modern items. Housewares, glassware, purses and shoes are reasonably priced. They have lots of old records, coffee mugs and costume jewelry too. The workers are volunteers and are nice to deal with although the older lady cashiers are super slow and get frustrated with the credit card machine. Worth a stop if you are in Berlin. Check out the Atlantic Hospital Thrift Store across the street by Tractor Supply as the prices are better on clothing.

Example: There are a few times in life when a meal is so expertly crafted and planned that it is nothing short of genius. Last night, I had one of those meals – the Mahi Mahi.

The dish was excellently prepared. Grilled, juicy, and fresh without a hint of fishiness. A glaze of tangerine sauce brought a hint of tart sweetness. The fish was placed on a mound of sweet plantain rice. The combination of the fish and rice alone was to die for!

However, as only expert chefs can achieve, additional garnishes provided even bolder, beautiful tastes. Pickled onions topping the fish made for an even finer taste experience, while green beans hidden under the fish added freshness and completed each bite

Why We re the Best

Experience like no other. Repairing and constructing over 7,000+ foundations. We know homes.

There are a lot of companies offering foundation repair in the Los Angeles area. How do you know which one is best? We believe experience should be the deciding factor. Julian Construction was formed in 1994, and our focus has always been on building foundations, doing repair, replacement, earthquake retrofitting and house leveling. We have inspected over 16,500 foundations .

If you also talk to another foundation contractor, ask how long they have been doing foundation repair. Not how long they have been in business. But how long they have been doing foundation work. There are some contractors in the LA area who have been doing foundation work for a year or less. Would you trust the safety of your home to them?

When the safety of your home and family are at stake, we think you ll want to go with Julian, the company that has been working under homes for nearly 20 years.

Best value. Our affordability comes from the efficiency of expertise and smooth-running crews. All equipment and vehicles are company owned. Julian Construction also offers 0% financing .

100% expert oversight. From start to finish, licensed and expert managers oversee all projects, ensuring perfection, timeliness and safety.

Catalogue Note

“Her clothes spread wide;
And, mermaid-like, awhile they bore her up:
Which time she chanted snatches of old tunes;
As one incapable of her own distress,
Or like a creature native and indued
Unto that element: but long it could not be
Till that her garments, heavy with their drink,
Pull’d the poor wretch from her melodious lay
To muddy death.”

William Shakespeare
Hamlet, Act IV, Scene VII

Celebrated as one of the greatest actresses of all time, Sarah Bernhardt was also recognised for her talent in the medium of sculpture, a passion which complemented her success as a stage artist. The present marble relief of Ophelia is a rare surviving work signed by Bernhardt, and among her most important to appear at auction in recent memory. Deeply sensuous in form and conception, Ophelia testifies to the iconic actor’s considerable skill as a sculptor, while epitomising Bernhardt’s fascination with the morbid eroticism that surrounds Shakespeare’s heroine.

Born in Paris to a courtesan and an unknown father, Sarah Bernhardt received her first training as an actor at the Comédie-Française from which she was expelled, prompting a brief period of activity as a courtesan. Resuming her acting career in 1866, Bernhardt began to develop a reputation on the stage at prestigious Parisian theatres. She soon found unprecedented fame across Europe and beyond, enjoying several worldwide tours during the 1880s and 1890s. Known in particular for her magisterial portrayals of tragic characters, Sarah Bernhardt’s legendary status continued into the early 20 th century, when she starred in silent films and remained active on the stage until her death in 1923.

Sarah Bernhardt was as flamboyant a personality off the stage as she was in her dramatic roles. Famously, the actress acquired a coffin in the 1860s, in which she would pose and sleep regularly throughout her life. By thus fetishising her hypothetical corpse, Bernhardt displayed an erotically charged obsession with death that was both personal and symptomatic of her time – a time when morgues were places of public spectacle, and morbidly beautiful phenomena such as the death mask of ‘L’Inconnue de la Seine’ captivated the art scene.

It was the same 19 th -century environment which gave rise to an artistic fascination with the character of Ophelia in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The tragic fate of the heroine, who becomes Hamlet’s lover but falls victim to the Prince’s plotting of revenge and, in her eventual madness, drowns in a stream, was depicted by painters such as Eugène Delacroix and, notably, John Everett Millais.

Bernhardt’s activity as a sculptor began in the 1870s with guidance from Roland Mathieu-Meusnier and Jules Franceschi. Taking a studio in 1873, she went on to model a number of highly accomplished works, such as the group Après la Tempête. which she exhibited at the Salon in 1876.

Despite being the most famous actress of her day, Sarah Bernhardt had never performed the role of Ophelia at the time her marble was conceived – it was not until 1886 that she appeared as Ophelia in a production of Hamlet. followed by a controversial turn as the eponymous character of Shakespeare’s tragedy in 1899. Yet Bernhardt’s prominent obsession with death had led to a long-lived fascination with the tragic heroine, and her sculptural representation of Ophelia became one of her most significant works. Modelled in 1880, the relief accompanied Bernhardt on her first tour of North America before being shown at the Paris Salon in 1881. Reviews of Ophelia were positive, praising it as a work ‘of which any sculptor might be proud’ (see Mason, op. cit. p. 312) – a choice of words which highlights Bernhardt’s unique status as both a woman and a full-time actress active in the profession of sculpture.

The relief is thought to exist in a handful of versions in marble, the present example being an important rediscovery. The only other version whose location is known is that in Copenhagen, which was gifted to the Royal Theatre by Bernhardt in June 1881 and remains on display in its foyer. Another version is recorded to have been a gift to the Austrian painter Hans Makart, while a third was exhibited at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Photographs reveal very slight variations between the marbles, and it is possible that the present version is that which was given to Makart. Bernhardt’s personal attachment to the work is revealed by her inclusion of a photograph of Ophelia – probably the plaster – in her 1907 memoirs.

Bernhardt’s high relief represents Ophelia in bust-form, her head turned, her eyes closed, wearing a garland of flowers, and enveloped by water which merges with her tresses. The subtlety of Bernhardt’s modelling is showcased in the beautifully detailed flowers, as well as the delicate waves of the ‘glassy stream’, whose texture contrasts with the smooth and bulging form of Ophelia’s exposed right breast. Though seemingly depicted in the moment of her death, the woman’s sensuous open-mouthed expression, overt nudity, and languid pose exude an undeniable eroticism. Unaware of her suffering, the heroine appears to embrace her death as an ecstatic consummation. Bernhardt thus offers an original interpretation of the references to female sexuality and deflowering made by Shakespeare throughout the scene of Ophelia’s madness and Queen Gertrude’s speech describing her death, which makes use of sexualised imagery such as ‘long purples / That liberal shepherds give a grosser name’.

In her later theatrical interpretations of the character, Bernhardt would add a heightened level of eroticism to Ophelia’s death by choosing to appear on stage herself as the dead Ophelia – instead of the conventional coffin – in the graveyard scene, in which her brother Laertes throws himself upon her body. Mirroring her sculptural portrait of the heroine, Bernhardt was described thus in a review by Joseph Knight (1886, as quoted in Young, op. cit. p. 23): ‘She is once more seen with her face rigid as marble, and her body, covered with flowers, …’

Is your car over 15 years old? Follow this advice from the AA

Following yesterday’s announcement by two of Ireland’s major motor insurers that they will no longer provide cover for cars beyond 15 years old AA Ireland is offering advice for affected motorists.

Firstly, we would urge any motorists who have 15 year old cars not to panic. There are still many other insurance providers who will cover your car, including The AA.

This is part of a bigger problem affecting the motor insurance industry as a whole. Prices are rising sharply for everyone: normal, standard risks are producing annual increases of up to 20%, while non-standard risks (including older cars) are prompting much higher premiums. New customers will also have fewer providers to choose from.

It’s time worn advice but do shop around. Even as prices go up there is still good and bad relative value to be had. Do please try the AA while you are at it.

Don’t look only at price. It obviously matters but look also at what’s included in the policy. Protected no claims discount or windscreen cover are benefits that are worth hanging on to.

Why is the price going up so much?

There are a few things going on, some of which are understandable and some that are less so. Traffic volumes have increased rapidly, thus resulting in more crashes and more exposure. There is also evidence to suggest that the cost of settling claims for injuries is growing. Fraud is a huge issue in the insurance industry, and one that has been tolerated for too long but is in fact driving up typical policies by at least €50. Levies are also included in policies to cover previous disasters such as the Quinn collapse, which resulted in a 5% increase.

However, another huge factor is that insurance was sold below cost for a number of years. Providers were fighting to keep their share of the profit but came up fruitless in under-writing terms. This activity is unsustainable and has resulted in a collective price hike.

Conor Faughnan, Director of Consumer Affairs at AA Ireland spoke to Newstalk’s Pat Kenny about this issue yesterday .

What does the AA want done about it?

There ought to be a much tougher regime when it comes to insurance provider’s tolerance of fraud. That includes how companies share data, a practice that will act as a preventative measure and quell fraud at its source. A regime that encompasses Garda detection, policing of the issue and court dealings with fraudsters in the aftermath would greatly stabilise the industry as a whole.

Address the rising cost of claims

The Injuries Board (injuriesboard.ie) has worked well for ten years at keeping legal and unnecessary costs out of the claims process. This requires a review due to the changing nature of the industry. Presently, courts are allowed to award higher pay-outs for personal injuries which results in the rise of unnecessary costs that are not part of the victim’s initial compensation.

Though it’s not exactly rocket science we know that when we invest in the number of roadside Gardaí, the number of collisions reduces. The evidence is more pointed in the case of fatalities and very serious injuries, but their presence also reduces the volume of smaller crashes as well.

In 2013 and 2014, The AA was warning that Gardaí numbers on the road were deteriorating unacceptably and we said this was the key reason why the number of crashes was increasing. To be fair that is a little better so far this year but we still do not have the level of enforcement that you see elsewhere.

The Venice Police Fill up with Purr-Pull Gasoline in Los Angeles

Purr-Pull gasoline looked just like it sounds it was purple and being a premium grade of fuel, part of it s name came from the fuel s good pulling power. Its slogan was: It will make a motor purr on the hard pull. According to the book, Little Giant of Signal Hill. the fuel was a mix of casinghead and manufactured gasoline colored with a purple vegetable dye. The United States Refining Co. produced it, and it was sold at Signal Products Stations. The casinghead portion of the mix came from the Signal Hill Oil Field in Signal Hill, California.

In these photos taken during 1930, you can see three members of the Venice, California Police Department posing with their vehicles. Shown are a 1930 Model A Ford Coupe and a pair Henderson KJ Streamline model motorcycles. The two-wheelers produced between the years of 1929 and 1931 were powered by 40 h.p. straight four-cylinder engines and were capable of reaching 100 m.p.h. Note the small airplane ornament that has been installed on the front fender of one of the motorcycles. You can view over 175 more vintage motorcycle photos here on The Old Motor.

The purple fuel in the Station s clear glass visible pump cylinders must have been a sight to see at this location at 11520 West Washington Boulevard, in Los Angeles. The photos are courtesy of the USC Libraries. The postcard at the bottom of the post titled: Air View, Famous Signal Hill, is courtesy of the Boston Public Library. You can view over 150 more old gasoline station related photos here on The Old Motor.

From Wikipedia. By 1925, Venice s politics had become unmanageable. Its roads, water and sewage systems badly needed repair and expansion to keep up with its growing population. When it was proposed that Venice be annexed to Los Angeles, the board of trustees voted to hold an election. Annexation was approved in the election in November 1925, and Venice was formally annexed to Los Angeles in 1926.
This means that in 1930, these policemen would have been LAPD.

Dennis, Good point and and you may be correct about the officers being part of the LAPD, but at the time they could have still of been referred to as the Venice Police.

The link below goes directly to the LAPD history for further info:

According to locationstalk, the Venice Division station was built in 1929. This building is at 685 Venice Blvd and is a two-story, reinforced concrete Art Deco building. This facility is now a community center.
    http://www.vft.org/aIndexImgs/14-11-26-VeniceStation.jpg
It was taken out of service in the early seventies when LAPD moved to the Pacific Division at 12312 Culver Boulevard.

Bob Ricewasser November 26, 2014 at 4:16 pm

It looks like the motorcycle on the right has Goodyear Diamond Tread tires. These were popular tires on Model A s as well and I believe are still available from some of the various antique car tire dealers.

    Tom M. November 26, 2014 at 4:44 pm

I m afraid I can t add to the Venice vs. LA discussion, but I d like to know more about casinghead being used in the gasoline formulation.

Does anyone know how that works? My understanding is that the casinghead is the cap that covers of the producer pipe. Casinghead gas is the gas which often comes up with the oil. and which can be captured separately from the crude. But how does casinghead get formulated into real gasoline?

Tom, The only thing I can add is the snippet view of Little Giant of Signal Hill I found mentioned that the company sent casinghead gasoline a couple of miles through a pipe line to a refinery and blended it with manufactured gasoline .

Signal Oil, Sponsor of the Whistler mentions: They were just getting this natural gasoline which if run on its own produced large holes in engine pistons. Very high octane volatile stuff but when blended with gasoline would make great starting fuel in the winter and more power like adding ethyl . http://www.goldenageradio.com/2013/09/signal-oil.html

Donald Ellis November 26, 2014 at 5:57 pm

I wonder at what stage in the process the color was added? I remember Red and Green colored gasoline in those visible pumps, but no purple. Until tetra ethyl lead I suppose gas was gas! ..or?

Eric Armstrong November 26, 2014 at 6:28 pm

The Model A looks new but I ve never seen one with the body and fenders the same color. I thought the fenders were always black.

Eric, By special order for fleets like police departments and trucking companies Ford would apparently paint them the color the buyer desired.

Larry Huffman November 26, 2014 at 8:25 pm

Very interesting, both the photo/story and the comments. However, I still don t know if I could sell Purr-Pull gasoline with a straight face.

Kevin Preston November 27, 2014 at 11:30 am

If you rotate to the left, you will see up the street another building that was in the background of one of the shots still there too, now a market!

Purple gas was sold here for years. The dye was added to identify gas sold tax free for off road (farming) use. Anyone caught with purple gas in their car tank was subject to a fine.

The KJ Henderson was the second last model built by the Excelsior owned company. The KL came out in 1931, the last year Henderson motorcycles were manufactured. Every Henderson model from the commencent of production in 1912 up to 1931 was powered by an in-line 4-cylinder engine.

Friends and family were left alone on the eve of the death of the patient. My daughter called three times for assistance with her friends care and got NONE. The person answering the 24 hour calls was of no help. I have worked in healthcare for 12 years and cannot express my disappointment with the care our friend and her caretakers received.

What they were able to do for my family was above and beyond expectations. I work in the health & wellness industry, and the icing on the cake was at the anniversary of my aunt’s passing, a volunteer called and asked if there was anything they can do for my family and that there was going to be a memorial service if we wanted to come. As a result I have decided to participate in their annual walk and fall gala to raise money for them and to date we have raised over $12,000 and donated over $1,000 in services and products. The only thing I can say is this: Don’t wait to get hospice involved for your loved one. The difference was so significant that we wish we got them involved sooner.

We spent 3 days at the Beau Rivage Motel and were very happy with our choice. Was nice to stay in a family run motel and not just another chain motel.

We had a kitchenette room which was good for making breakfast. Our room was a decent size for 4 people and housekeeping did a good job as it was very clean. Didn’t use the BBQ area, but it was a great area and was popular with other guests. There is a good sized pool and hot tub which were very relaxing. The wifi not fantastic, but meant that the kids got to cut off from technology for awhile which was good! There is a train track behind the motel, but unless you are a light sleeper it really isn’t an issue, and unless you stay on the other side of the road, all motels back on to the tracks. It is a short walk to the beach and pier and we didn’t find it noisy at night so is a great location.

The owners/staff were really friendly and were always happy to help. We were leaving by train and after storing our considerable amount of luggage, the owner offered to drive us to the station when she realised we were walking. This was greatly appreciated and after chatting on way to station we left feeling like we had made new friends.

If you are looking for reasonably priced, family style accommodation then I can definitely recommend Beau Rivage. If we ever make it back to this beautiful part of the world, this is where we will stay.

    Reviewed 28 June 2016

Was in town for a pickleball tourney. This was the host hotel. At first glance we we skeptical, but when we checked in that went away. I m always a little leery of these beach motels as I have had bad experiences in the past. While the staff was very friendly and accommodating, there were some things that weren t so great. More

Your Tourneyment and the people participating were a blast – so much excitement! We are so sorry about your wi-fi experience. Even with the spring updates, streaming has invaded our bandwidth. We hope to address the problem with other motel colleagues and our providor. Thanks for your constructive criticism – and we hope to see you compete in FLA! More
