Where Can I Find Free Online Christian Counseling Courses? #christian #counseling #degree

Where Can I Find Free Online Christian Counseling Courses?

Free online Christian counseling courses can be found at the Master’s International School of Divinity. Students will be able to access course materials at their own convenience. Schools offering Christian Counseling degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

What You Need to Know

Free online Christian counseling courses teach you counseling techniques, using the Bible’s teachings as a guide to the human mind and mental health. You’ll learn how to provide counseling for common issues, such as marriage, money and anger issues. You may be presented with test questions after reading each chapter to help you assess your understanding of the content.

Master’s International School of Divinity

With these three courses, the Master’s International School of Divinity presents the Bible as a basis for providing psychological counseling. The first course is a 5-step, scripture-based counseling course where methodology is covered. In the Bible as the inerrant guide for mankind course, you’ll delve into this topic during this class, which also attempts to answer the question of the Bible’s authenticity. A third course, on the Biblical foundation for mental health, is a 6-part course (including an introduction), where students will explore the concept of sanctification as a foundation for Christian counseling. This course doesn’t address the treatment of serious mental disorders – and it is no substitute for the professional training needed to become a licensed healthcare provider – but it may help you give better advice to a fellow churchgoer.

Biblical Directionism Counseling

What Will I Learn?

You’ll compare Christian counseling and Biblical counseling methods, and you’ll learn how various counseling models are developed. You’ll also learn how to gather data from a counselee and apply the five-step counseling model.

What Materials Are Included?

You need to have a Bible on hand during the course. Otherwise, study materials are easily accessed on the Master’s International School of Divinity website. Materials consist of audio highlights – which can be downloaded and played via Windows Media Player – and seven chapters of online instruction in the Biblical Directionism counseling model.

What Assignments Will I Complete?

This course features self-correcting exams at the end of each chapter. You should take these multi-question tests if you are taking this class to earn the Certificate of Completion.

The Bible As The Inerrant Guide for Mankind

What Will I Learn?

This course discusses the validity of the Bible, the reality of God and the scholarly and scientific debate surrounding these subjects. Opinions of theologians, professors and other preeminent thinkers are presented.

What Materials Are Provided?

The course is presented in the form of a downloadable textbook in Microsoft Word format. The only other required text is a copy of the Bible. Written exercises based on the course chapters allow you to further explore and understand key messages.

The Biblical Foundation for Mental Health

What Will I Learn?

You’ll cover topics like sin, grace and sanctification. You’ll learn how a cooperative effort between God and an individual can facilitate the counseling process. Scriptural examples are used throughout to reinforce Christian concepts. End of chapter questions help you assess your understanding of the material.

What Materials Are Provided?

You can access all of the necessary materials for this course through the school’s website. The school also provides a web link to helpful Bible study tools which can aid your learning.

To do so, you must submit a withdrawal form signed by your professor to the Registrar’s Office in the Tower, lower level. A “W” (Withdrawal) will appear on your transcript and is not calculated in your Grade Point Average (GPA), but can impact your Academic Standing. (Note. You cannot withdraw from remedial/developmental courses.)

After the ninth week of the semester, an official withdrawal is permitted only at the professor’s discretion.

If you are registered for a course and stop attending without following the official withdrawal procedure, it will be treated as an unofficial withdrawal, resulting in a grade of “UW”. Grades of “UW”are included in calculating the GPA and count as an “F”.

You may wish to talk with an advisor about the impact of withdrawing from a course before doing so.

If you register for a course and never attend, you will be given a grade of “NA” (Never Attended). This grade is not calculated in your GPA but, like the “W” grade, can impact your Academic Standing.

Masters in ESL Degrees: Guide to Online Programs and TESOL Careers #masters

Accredited Masters Programs
Guide to MS, MA, re interested in learning more about programs for teaching ESL, we ve provided a list of some popular, accredited schools below.

What is ESL or TESOL certification and do I need it?

If you want to teach English to non-native speaking students in the U.S. or in other parts of the world, you need to meet ESL or TESOL certification requirements. The U.S. requires prospective educators to meet both national and state certification requirements. Below are the typical steps to follow to becoming an ESL teacher:

1. Research ESL Programs and Requirements

Start by researching schools and degree options in ESL to determine which route fits your interests and career goals. If you want to teach at the secondary level, you ll want to look for a program that prepares graduates to work with high school students. The same goes for elementary and adult education.

ESL teachers can hold an undergraduate degree in nearly any major, but some may be more beneficial than others, such as English, education, or linguistics. Some students choose to minor in education as a way to explore teaching within your subject area.

ESL teachers must earn the right certification through an accredited undergraduate program, community college, language institute or online course. If you want to teach abroad, you ll need a work visa. To teach in the U.S. need to meet licensure and/or certification requirements as determined by your state.

A master s degree is often a requirement for ESL teachers in community colleges or universities. Public school ESL teachers may need to earn a master s degree to work for some employers after they re hired.

For international employment, you can research openings by joining online job boards or working with a foreign language institute. For jobs in the U.S. you can look for regions that are hiring, attend job fairs, or substitute teach at a local school. Community college and university teaching positions are typically posted on a school s website or third-party website.

Which master s degree is right for me?

A master’s degree will greatly expand your career options, including opportunities to teach at a university, a community college, or at an intensive language center abroad or in the U.S.

The degree options listed below focus on education with an emphasis in ESL, with the last option designed for those hoping to teach English as a second language to non-English-speaking students in an ESL or an EFL context.

  • MA Master of Arts. Completing a four-year bachelor’s degree program is required before beginning a master’s degree program. Students who have obtained a master’s degree are highly educated in their chosen area of study.
  • MEd Master’s in Education. Graduates of a MEd program are well-educated in their areas of study to the point that they are also able to teach that subject to others.
  • MAT Master of Arts in Teaching. Similar to a MEd, but students in a MAT program learn more about the tools and methods used to teach others.
  • MA in TESOL Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. This is a specific degree program that specifically teaches students how to teach English to ELLs. Graduates of this degree program will be able to teach English to students without knowledge of the students’ languages. In this program, students frequently have the option to pursue a public school (PK-12) ESL state teaching certification.

What do all the ESL acronyms mean?

If you are new to the world of language teaching, you may feel intimidated by all the acronyms related to ESL. That s why we put together a list of the most common acronyms you re likely to come across in the ESL field to prevent confusion:

Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. This acronym refers to educating English learners. The acronyms TESL, TEFL, ESOL, and ELL, all fall under the TESOL umbrella.

Teaching English as a Second Language. TESL and ESL are the same, and refer to teaching English to non-native speakers in public or private PK-12 schools, colleges and universities, tutoring organizations, or any company. Some states also refer to this as ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages), while others differentiate between TESL/ESL and ESOL.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language. This acronym is used when an educator is teaching English in a country where English is not the primary language, and are often employed by universities and international organizations.

English to Speakers of Other Languages. Can be used interchangeably with TESL/ESL, but it is more commonly used when referring to a program beyond an elementary-high school setting. These are also known as English as Second Language programs, and they all teach ELLs colloquial terms in addition to basic vocabulary and grammar.

English Language Learner. ELL students are those who are still in the process of learning English and are not yet fluent or proficient. The ELL acronym refers to any student in a TESL/ESL or ESOL program anywhere.

3 Ways to Protect Your Small Business #protecting #your #online #reputation

How to Protect Your Small Business

Most small businesses are begun as simple ideas, and grow into successful enterprises because of the motivation and entrepreneurial enthusiasm of their owners. As your small business becomes more successful, it also becomes more vulnerable. There are many potential disasters that can harm your business, and you need to be prepared to defend yourself as you grow. Protect your small business from technological and financial threats as well as threats to its reputation by being prepared and vigilant about prevention strategies.

Steps Edit

Method One of Three:
Protecting Against Financial Threats Edit

Protect your small business from potential lawsuits. Lawsuits can be expensive, even if you are confident that you will win. You will still have to pay for legal representation and spend a lot of time defending your company.

  • Watch your actions and words. Avoid doing business with people who have a reputation for unscrupulous behavior and do not engage in questionable business practices.

  • Be careful of conflicts of interest. Avoid situations that could be perceived as suspicious as well.

  • Insure your small business. Make sure you have enough liability insurance and consider additional coverage such as errors and omissions insurance or a directors and officers (D O) policy if you operate under a board of directors.

Assess your ability to withstand a catastrophe. An unexpected disaster such as a fire or a hurricane could destroy your business, leaving you without income or a plan to rebuild.

    • Talk to your insurance agent about what is appropriate for your small business. Each business has different needs.

  • Develop a crisis plan. If disaster strikes, you and your employees should know exactly what to do. Include plans for any inventory, technology and how you will communicate with your customers.

Watch your cash and profits. Keep checks and balances and other controls in place to avoid being robbed or losing your hard-earned profits.

    • Be careful who you hire. Conduct background checks and screen all employees and consultants, especially those with access to company finances.

  • Audit your business finances at least every quarter.

  • Require timely payments from clients and customers. Waiting for payments can cause cash flow problems. Insist on payment for services and goods within a reasonable amount of time, such as 30 days.

Work with a good tax attorney or financial advisor. Small businesses are eligible for many tax breaks. Make sure you are taking advantage of all of them.

    Method Three of Three:
Protecting Against Threats to Your Reputation Edit

Use social media responsibly. While most small businesses can benefit from Facebook pages and Twitter profiles, remember that the digital dialogue can include people unhappy with your business.

    • Use online conversations to promote your products and services, and invite your customers and clients to discuss what they like about working with you.
    • Do not overreact to negative comments. Deleting anything that sheds unfavorable light on your small business might damage your reputation even more. You want to be transparent. Have a trusted customer or supportive partner respond to any attacks against your business with a positive story or testimonial.

Develop a crisis communications plan. If something happens that can damage your reputation, you need to be prepared. Prepare a plan to respond to customers, the media and any other stakeholders.

Consider working with a public relations professional. Keeping a PR team on retainer might be prohibitive for your small business. However, talk to PR professionals about engaging their services on a per-project basis.

  • Business Fraud Protection #community #bank, #banking, #bank, #loans, #deposits, #savings, #financial #services,

    Business Fraud Protection

Thieves have developed increasingly sophisticated and malicious techniques to steal money. They thwart existing authentication controls, gain control of customer accounts, and transfer funds to individuals hired to help launder funds and send them overseas–often beyond the reach of local financial institutions and influence of local law enforcement.

    What are corporate account takeovers?

Corporate account takeover is a fast-growing electronic crime where thieves typically use some form of malware to obtain Online Banking login credentials and then fraudulently transfer funds from those accounts. Many account takeover schemes target small- to medium-sized business customers since their account balances are generally higher than consumer accounts and their transaction activity is generally greater, making it easier to hide the fraudulent transfers.

Constant vigilance against downloads from unknown sites or clicking on banner ads may be the only ways to avoid becoming an account takeover victim.

An effective tool in the Internet thiefs arsenal is keylogging . Keyloggers can be surreptitiously installed on a computer when a customer visits an infected website, or clicks on an infected banner advertisement or email attachment. Keylogging can also be accomplished via a hardware device plugged into the computer, which stores the captured data for later use. Generally small in size and adept at hiding themselves on the user’s computer, keylogger files often go undetected by most antivirus programs.

Thieves use keyloggers to steal the Login ID, password, and/or challenge question answers of financial institution customers. This information alone, or in conjunction with stolen browser cookies loaded on the criminals computer, may enable the criminal to access the customers account(s) and transfer funds to accounts controlled by the criminal, usually through wire or ACH transactions.

Other types of more sophisticated malware allow man-in-the middle (MIM) or man-in-the browser (MIB) attacks. In one scenario, the cyber thief is able to intercept the authentication credentials submitted by the customer and access the customer’s account(s). In another scenario, they do not intercept the credentials, but modify the transaction content or insert additional transactions not authorized by the customer which, in most cases, are funds transfers to accounts controlled by the thief. Criminals conceal their actions by directing the customer to a fraudulent website that is a mirror image of the financial institutions website, or sending the customer a message claiming that the institutions website is unavailable and to try again later. Cyber thieves may have the capacity to delete any trace of their attack from the log files.

    Avoiding Fraud

It’s important for our business customers to understand the reality of the threats that face them today. Customers are constantly being targeted by advanced malware threats.

Best Online LPN to BSN Programs

Many people enter the health care workforce as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), mainly due to the fact that it only takes around a year to complete the educational program that leads to this license.

However, many would at some point like to further their career and job prospects with a more advanced degree. For most, the obvious choice is to earn a post-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

Traditionally, students would enroll in an LPN to RN (Registered Nurse ) program, which would result in earning an associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) and an RN license in about 18 months time. They would then go on to enroll in a separate RN to BSN program, which would usually take another 18 months to complete.

Thankfully, LPN-to-BSN bridge programs are now widely available, allowing LPNs to earn a BSN and RN license in just one program, and in less time. This efficient and cost-effective option has become a favorite among busy, working nurses trying to balance their careers and home life while at the same time furthering their education.

Of course, busy LPNs aren’t always in a position to take time off from work and other obligations to go back to school. This has made online LPN/LVN to BSN bridge programs the go-to option.

When exploring your education options, it’s always a good idea to look at everything that’s out there and really shop out the programs to compare the benefits of each.

To help you get started, we listed five of our favorite online LPN/LVN to BSN bridge programs here.

Do I need to get auto insurance before I buy a new

Do I need to get auto insurance before I buy a new car?

You don’t need automobile insurance before you buy a new car, but you will need it before you can drive the car home from the dealer’s lot.

If you know ahead of time the exact car you’re going to buy, you can call your insurance agent with the information. After asking you several questions and getting all the necessary information, the agent will add the new car to your existing insurance policy.

If you’re at the automobile dealership and want to buy a car and immediately drive it home, call your agent from the dealership. Give the agent all the necessary information over the telephone, and the agent will issue an insurance binder that is effective immediately. This binder will serve as your insurance policy for the new car until your agent can add the new car to your existing policy.

If you do not have an insurance agent, the car dealer may be able to refer you to one. Chances are, though, that the agent will not insure you over the telephone. Most agents require that you visit them in person to fill out an application and put down a deposit. The best thing to do is to establish a relationship with an insurance agent before you buy a car. This is to your advantage, as the agent will have time to research the best markets for you.

Never drive a car without insurance. If you were in an accident and had no insurance, you could quickly be in severe financial and legal trouble. If you cannot get your new car insured right away, leave the car at the dealership. Get the insurance as soon as you can and then go pick up your car.

    Online Creative Writing Degree Programs #writing, #online #degrees #in #writing

    Online Writing Degrees

As John Steinbeck once said, “The profession of writing makes horse racing seem like a solid, stable business.”

Working as a writer or author can be a tricky business. Writers build their careers on experience and reputation, but a college degree can help open many doors.

    Potential degrees in writing

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, or BLS, writers, authors and editors generally hold a bachelor’s degree in a field related to writing, such as journalism, English or communications. Writers who want to focus on a particular subject in their writing could be well-served by a degree in that field; for instance, those writing history textbooks might pursue a degree in history or political science. Writers who want to cover the financial industry may pursue additional coursework in economics or finance.

Writing focused online liberal-arts degree programs can take many forms, from creative writing to journalism to marketing copy. No matter the specialty, a writing portfolio is an essential element for writers on the job market. Many degree programs in writing offer opportunities either in class or through internships for writers to gain experience by writing fiction, reporting news stories or crafting advertising copy.

Since writing does not require hands-on training, online degrees in writing are popular. Students in online writing programs can share drafts of work and send feedback to other writers via email or online forums. Online degrees in writing allow students to work at their own pace, writing when inspiration strikes. Online writing programs may also be a great choice for working students who want to improve their writing skills for professional or personal reasons.

What to expect from a career as a writer

Writing is a field that has been dramatically changed by the rise of online media. Today, many writers must tailor their content to a digital audience. While online media has created a wealth of new opportunities for writers, it has also led to shrinking job opportunities in traditional print media. Writing is a competitive field, and the BLS predicts opportunities will be best for writers with experience in new media and electronic formats.

According to the BLS, 70 percent of writers were self-employed in 2008. Among the 30 percent employed by outside companies, about half worked in scientific, professional, technical or publishing industries. Jobs for writers are traditionally found in major media markets, such as Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. However, many writers use the Internet to allow them to work from almost anywhere.

Though many writers work in home offices, they might not have set hours. The nature of covering a news story or meeting a deadline can occasionally mean working around the clock. Writers can spend a great deal of time researching, interviewing sources, writing drafts and working closely with clients to achieve the best outcome before deadline.

The BLS reports a mean annual wage of $64,960 for authors and writers in 2010. While wages at the low end of the spectrum are less than $26,610 per year, established writers can make significantly more. The BLS reports that the upper ten percent made more than $109,440 in 2010.

Good writers are creative, curious and skilled communicators. Writers also need to be able to meet deadlines and work under pressure. In a job market where many work as freelancers, they must also be flexible, self-motivated and able to manage their time well to build a stable career in the industry.

Online PhD Degrees – Top Accredited Online Doctorate & Doctoral Degree Programs

    Online PhD & Doctorate Degrees

    A Higher Level of Learning.

    What is a Doctorate?

It is a terminal degree the highest class of degree you can hold in a particular subject. Earning one can take several years sometimes as much as eight or ten but the payoff can be worth it.

What are the types of Doctorates?

There are two basic types including:

Research doctorates: Most commonly referred to as a PhD, or Doctor of Philosophy, and it s granted in recognition of academic research that is publishable in a peer-reviewed academic journal.

The criteria for earning a research doctorate usually involves conducting a large body of original research that contributes to the field. This often is submitted as a single thesis or dissertation, although it can also be a portfolio of shorter report.

They are usually required to teach at the collegiate level, and can be required for some non-academic research positions, particularly in the sciences. While they are not usually required, a they are helpful in securing some business, government and nonprofit leadership positions.

Professional doctorates: These are granted in fields where graduates aren t planning to conduct scholarly research, but to engage in a profession. The most commonly known professional with this degree include the MD (Medicinae Doctor) and JD (Juris Doctor) degrees earned by practicing doctors and lawyers.

Other professions that require this degree type include veterinarian, dentist, pharmacist, and psychologist.

How long does it take to earn a doctoral degree?

The length of the program varies tremendously depending on the school and area of study. Some programs take as few as three years, while others can take as much as ten. The median length for the programs in the United States is seven years.

What is required to get into a doctoral program?

Programs are extremely competitive. Good grades are more or less universally required no matter what program you re applying for, as well as high scores on postgraduate-level standardized tests such as the MCAT (for medical students), the LSAT (for law students), or the GRE s (for PhD candidates).

Some programs require a Master s degree, but many others accept students directly from undergraduate programs. Many students who don t earn admission to doctoral programs will earn a Master s degree to improve their chances of admission.

How much does a Doctorate program cost?

Some programs can be very expensive. It isn t unusual, for example, to find medical school tuitions at over $100,000 per year, and many students take out massive student loans to cover the costs.

For students in research PhD programs, it s more common to find tuition subsidies, in the form of research grants and work-study programs. Some graduate students can get their entire tuition load subsidized by the school in exchange for work as research and teaching assistants.

How much can you earn with a Doctorate degree?

The average research holder earns $1.3 million dollars more than a person with a Bachelor s and $900,000 more than a Masters holder.

Professional degree holders earn even more: Those with an MD or JD can earn as much as $2.3 million dollars more than those with a Bachelors degree, and $1.9 million dollars more than someone with a Masters.

However, these numbers don t tell the whole story. While some careers particularly those in medicine, law and the sciences can pay off well, others don t.

Law tends to be hit or miss. If you work in a corporate law firm, you ll earn a lot but if you choose to go into public service or open your own law practice, you may not earn much at all.

With a research doctorate, odds for high earnings are better with a degree in the sciences or business. In the humanities, lucrative tenure-track teaching positions at universities are few and far betwee low-paying adjunct teaching positions are more common and there s not as much demand in the private sector.

The amount you earn depends on the field and career you choose. However, PhD and professional degree holders earn significantly more on average than those with less prestigious degrees.

With a doctoral degree, you can become a doctor or lawyer, a leading researcher, or an instructor at a top university. PhD degree programs open up many different opportunities for traditional and online students alike.

Representative APR Range is not a lender and does not provide short term or online personal loans but refers consumers to the lenders who may provide such loans. is unable to supply you with an exact APR (Annual Percentage Rate) that you will be charged if you are approved for a loan. APRs depend on multiple factors, including the lender’s requirements and offers, your credit worthiness, your state of residence, and the type and term of the loan you request. You will be given the details on the APR, loan fees, and other terms by your lender when you are redirected to your loan agreement during the loan request process.

The APR on a short term loan can range from 200% to 2,290% depending on how the APR is calculated (nominal vs. effective), the duration of the loan, loan fees incurred, late payment fees, non-payment fees, loan renewal actions, and other factors. Keep in mind that the APR range is not your finance charge and your finance charge will be disclosed later on. See a Representative Example

Borrow $200 for 14 days with a $30 to $60 lender fee. Your estimated APR is 391% to 782%
Calculation: (lender fee / loan amount) x (amount of days in a year / duration of the loan) x 100
    Low End of Range: ($30 / $200) * (365 days / 14 days) x 100 = 391.07%
    High End of Range: ($60 / $200) * (365 days / 14 days) x 100 = 782.14%
Payday loans are relatively expensive when compared with other loan products. Payday loans are not recommended as a long term financial solution and they should only be taken for emergency financial needs.

The APR on online personal loans can reach up to 1,386% depending on the lender’s terms, borrower’s residence state, the duration of the loan, loan fees incurred, late payment fees, non-payment fees, loan extension plan, and other factors. Some states cap APR and the amounts of charges for online personal loan.

    Implications of Late Payment

You are encouraged to contact your lender as soon as possible if you are unable to repay your loan on the scheduled repayment date or make regular installment payment on time. Your lender may set late payment fees in accordance with state regulations, and your lender has several courses of action to deal with late payment. For more information about your lender’s specific procedures as they apply to late payments, please review your loan agreement or contact your lender directly. Origination, documentation and other additional fees may apply to your online personal loan deal. Late payment, non-payment fees and other penalties may apply to both short term and online personal loan deals in case of missed payments. Please review your loan agreement carefully for information about the financial implications before you provide your electronic signature.

    Implications of Non-Payment

The costs associated with loans of up to $500 can range from 15% to 40% of the entire loan amount, and the charges associated with loans of more than $500 can be even more. Your lender may also charge you late fees as well as fees for non-sufficient funds. As an example, your lender may charge you a $20 nonsufficient funds fee as well as 15% of the loan balance as a late fee. Please review your loan agreement carefully for information about the financial implications of non-payment before you provide your electronic signature.

Non-payment may involve debt collection practices as it is set by applicable law. The majority of the lenders in our network do not intend to sell your debt to outside collection agencies. Instead, they will attempt to collect the debt in-house via telephone, email, postal mail or even text message. Similarly, they will not threaten criminal charges or sue borrowers; they will generally offer debt settlements over time instead. Every lender in our network is required to adhere to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which protects consumers from being abused or harassed by debt collectors.

    Impact on Credit Score +

Lenders are within their rights to report your failure to repay a loan to one or all of the major credit reporting agencies — Experian, Equifax and Transunion. This negative record can be reflected on your credit history indefinitely until the loan is repaid in full. After the lenders receive payment in full, they can report it to the credit reporting agencies. We remind that late payment or non-payment of your loan can have negative impact on your credit history.

Some of the lenders in our network may automatically renew your short term loan if it becomes past due. This term is clearly identified in your loan agreement. You should check your loan agreement for your lender’s policy on automatic loan renewal prior to e-signing it. If your loan is renewed, there will be additional charges as determined by your lender, and the minimum term can be set up. Your lender may offer you other options in addition to renewal, including the ability to repay your loan in full at a later date or repay your loan over time in a series of installments.

Credit Check: Participating lenders may verify your social security number, driver license number, national id, or any other state or federal identifications and review your information against national databases, including but not limited to Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian, to determine your credit worthiness, credit standing and/or credit capacity. By submitting your information via our online form on this website, you agree to allow any and all participating lenders to verify your information and check your credit.
Not all the lenders in our network can provide up to $1,000 in payday loans and $3,000 in online personal loans. The limits and regulations vary from state to state. Cash transfer times and terms may vary from lender to lender.

Consumer Notice: We remind that payday loans and online personal loans for small dollar amounts are not a long term financial solution. These credit options imply relatively high interest rates and become a very costly solution if used improperly. Consumers that seek funds for longer terms or debt relief should consult credit advisor prior to making credit decisions of taking a short term or an online personal loan for small dollar amount.

Rick Lance receives E.Y. Mullins Award; Jason K. Allen named alumnus of the year

As several hundred alumni and friends gathered in Phoenix June June 13-14 for the Southern Baptist Convention, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary president R. Albert Mohler Jr. presented two major awards and a report on the seminary at the school’s annual reunion luncheon, June 14.

Rick Lance presented E.Y. Mullins Award for Distinguished Denominational Leadership

Mohler presented the E.Y. Mullins Award for Distinguished Denominational Leadership to Lance, who is executive director of the State Board of Missions and treasurer of the Alabama Baptist Convention.

This represents the first time the seminary has issued the E.Y. Mullins Award, the highest honor bestowed by the seminary, since LifeWay president Thom Rainer received it in 2014. Previously, the seminary honored denominational giants Paige Patterson (2001) and James T. Draper (1998). Mullins, the fourth president of the Southern Seminary, exerted massive influence within the SBC, including serving as president of the Convention, president of Baptist World Alliance, and chairman of the committee that introduced the denomination’s confession of faith, the Baptist Faith and Message. Mullins, who Mohler called “the most well-respected Baptist theologian of his generation,” also helped shape what became the Cooperative Program.

When he presented the award to Lance, who pastored multiple churches in Alabama before assuming leadership of the state’s Baptist convention, Mohler described why Lance’s career is significant. The award notes Lance’s “example of commitment” to the Southern Baptist Convention and its work, and his long commitment to pastoral ministry and theological conviction.

Mohler highlighted the seminary’s gratitude for the generosity of Alabama Baptists through the Cooperative Program. Alabama Baptists, Mohler explained, own a long history of supporting Southern Seminary. In fact, the largest single donor to the seminary in its history is the Alabama Baptist Convention, according to Mohler. He also expressed his personal gratitude for Alabama Baptists and the role they played in his own attending of Birmingham’s Samford University.

Jason K. Allen named Alumnus of the Year

In addition to the Mullins Award, Mohler presented Allen, president of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, with Southern Seminary’s Alumnus of the Year Award. Allen is a two-time graduate of Southern (master of divinity, 2004; doctor of philosophy, 2011), and, according to Mohler, he “stood out from the very beginning.”

“We knew the Lord had some very big plans for Jason Allen,” Mohler said. “He came on staff in my office, and then vice president for institutional advancement. And just think about the last five years, when he became president of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary — nothing less than what we might call a renaissance has taken place at Midwestern.”

Under Allen’s leadership, Midwestern Seminary has grown to record enrollment.

“It makes us proud that [Allen] is filling this role and fulfilling this responsibility so well” Mohler continued. “He has emerged as a statesman in Southern Baptist life. He is now one of my cherished colleagues as a seminary president in the Southern Baptist Convention, and it’s just right to recognize Dr. Allen as Alumnus of the Year of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in the year 2017.”

In addition to the two awards, Mohler reported to alumni and guests that Southern Seminary’s enrollment now exceeds 5300 students on campus and online, including 2000 men in the master of divinity degree program — the largest collection of M.Div. students in the history of higher education. He told those gathered that the seminary this spring celebrated awarding its 2000th doctor of philosophy degree.

Mohler also recognized some distinguished guests at the luncheon, including pastors James Merritt, Al Jackson, and Matt Chandler, along with alumnus and current president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission Russell Moore.
