Oracle Solaris (formerly SunOS) is a commercial product that provides users with an integrated and full featured server-oriented platform that combines the powerful OpenStack open source cloud computing software with a stable and reliable enterprise-class operating system.

Availability, supported platforms, boot options, and a little bit of history

First of all, we want to remind the reader that this is not a Linux distribution! Solaris OS is a UNIX operating system initially developed by Sun Microsystems, and now maintained by Oracle Corporation under the name of Oracle Solaris.

It is available for download as installable and live ISO images that can be burned onto blank CD discs using any CD/DVD burning software, as well as USB images that allows users to write the operating system to portable USB flash drives.

Supported architectures include x86 (32-bit) and SPARC (Scalable Processor Architecture). Recommended system requirements include at least 2GB or RAM (system memory) and at least 15GB of free hard disk space.

The Live CD ISO/USB images provide users with a modern boot prompt powered by GRUB2, from where users can start the live environment with default settings, using the VESA framebuffer, with SSH enabled, with screen reader, with magnifier, or in text mode. It is also possible to boot an existing operating system installed on the first disk.

State-of-the-art UNIX technologies for both server and desktop platforms

Before entering the live environment, users will need to select a keyboard layout and the language they want to use. The graphical session is powered by the traditional GNOME desktop environment, which comprises of two panels, a top one for accessing the main menu and launching apps, and a bottom one for interacting with running apps and switching between virtual workspaces.

Using the highly acclaimed ZFS filesystem, it includes powerful applications like the Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Glade interface designer, Pidgin instant messenger, Rhythmbox music player, Totem video player, Orca screen reader and magnifier, and GParted partition editor.

Bottom line

Occurring immediately. The term is used to describe a number of different computer features. For example, real-time operating systems are systems that respond to input immediately. They are used for such tasks as navigation, in which the computer must react to a steady flow of new information without interruption. Most general-purpose operating systems are not real-time because they can take a few seconds, or even minutes, to react.

Real time can also refer to events simulated by a computer at the same speed that they would occur in real life. In graphics animation. for example, a real-time program would display objects moving across the screen at the same speed that they would actually move.

Singapore Executive and Operating Committees provide fresh fruit juice at Dover Park Hospice

October 2014 │ Singapore

On October 4, members from Deutsche Bank Singapore’s Executive and Operating Committees volunteered their time to brighten up an otherwise wet and dreary Saturday for Dover Park Hospice patients, families and staff.

The mission at hand was a simple one: Deutsche Bank volunteers would provide to the patients made-to-order fresh fruit juices along with soft Swiss Rolls and some very sunny smiles.

The visit started with a short briefing by the CEO of Dover Park Hospice, Dr. Stella Wee, telling the volunteers more about the hospice and good work that it does. This was followed by a frenzy of juicing activity. The volunteers walked the wards, accompanied by a small medical team, taking juice orders and chatting to patients while group of four Deutsche Bank volunteers got their hands (or more accurately, rubber gloves) dirty operating fruit juicers to meet the constant demand for fresh juices.

While all of the patients are terminally ill, the majority with a life expectancy of less than three months, many were still able to enjoy the healthy and tasty addition to their late morning meal. What touched the hearts of all the volunteers were the tears of one patient, moved by the volunteers’ companionship on the day, which coincidentally was his birthday.

All too quickly, the ward rounds were over, and the fruit and cake supplies depleted. As the volunteers said their goodbyes and went back to their own lives, they each took away some small comfort that they might just have made a little difference to someone else’s day, brought a smile, or lent some support and companionship, on a wet and grey morning. The fruit juices were only a simple token, but to many of the hospice’s patients and families, it was a tiny but important reminder that they were not alone.

Enabling UEFI on Virtual Machines

UEFI support may be becoming more and more popular, but it can still be problematic to enable on VMs. Discover how to implement UEFI on several leading VM platforms.

Due to Microsoft’s requirement of Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) instead of BIOS firmware for computers certified for Windows 8 and later, UEFI is now supported in nearly all new computers. Although UEFI isn’t supported by all operating systems, it is becoming more and more popular.

Today we’ll discuss UEFI support of the popular virtual machine (VM) platforms and how to enable UEFI for your virtual machines. However, keep in mind that you can’t switch a virtual machine with an installed operating system from BIOS firmware to UEFI. That will cause the operating system to fail to boot. You need to enable UEFI and then install an operating system with UEFI.

Just like with modern computers, you can temporarily switch back to BIOS firmware for instance, to load a live bootable operating system that doesn’t support UEFI. Let’s take a closer look at how to enable UEFI on specific VM platforms.

VMware Player and Workstation

The virtual machine products offered by VMware support UEFI, but BIOS firmware is enabled by default. Furthermore, the VMware products do not provide an option in the GUI for enabling UEFI.

UEFI support must be enabled by manually editing the .VMX file or by using a third-party tool like VM Tweaker .

To manually edit the .VMX file, simply open with a text editor and add the following line and then save:

That’s it now that particular VM should run with UEFI.

VirtualBox

VirtualBox by default uses the BIOS firmware for virtual machines. It supports EFI too, but unfortunately does not support booting UEFI-based system volumes, which includes Windows 8 in UEFI mode. However, if you’d still like to test or use EFI with other operating systems, enabling EFI support is easy. Open the VM settings, select System. and on the Motherboard tab, select Enable EFI (special OSes only) .

Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 R2

Among the many new and changed features of Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 R2, Microsoft introduced UEFI support. Virtual machines can be created with Generation 1 support, which uses BIOS firmware, or Generation 2, which enables UEFI and Secure Boot.

After a virtual machine is created you cannot change its specified Generation, but you can optionally disable the Secure Boot support, which may actually be required to run Linux operating systems.

There aren’t really any special settings to enable UEFI support in Hyper-V. When creating virtual machines you’re asked which Generation you’d like to enable you must choose Generation 2 for UEFI and Secure Boot support.

Virtual machines created with Generation 2 also bring other new functionality, such as PXE boot via a standard network adapter or booting from a SCSI virtual hard disk or virtual DVD. Generation 1 implements the virtual machine like previous versions of Hyper-V and is still useful for when using legacy devices and operating systems.
