Wissahickon Hospice Wissahickon Hospice

Mission Statement

Wissahickon Hospice’s mission is to comfort and support patients and families who are experiencing a life-limiting illness. Wissahickon Hospice accomplishes this through service, educating the public and the healthcare community about hospice principles and practices, and continuing to evaluate and modify hospice policies and services.

Description

Established in 1982, Wissahickon Hospice was the first Medicare-certified hospice in Pennsylvania. Wissahickon Hospice provides services through a team of professionals and trained volunteers to terminally ill adults and children and their families. Hospice principles place emphasis on pain and symptom control, spiritual and emotional support, patient and family education, and bereavement support for the survivors following the death of the patient. Hospice seeks neither to prolong life nor to hasten death. Its objective is to work with the patient and the patient’s family, physician and friends, so that the patient may live his or her final days, weeks, or months in comfort and in familiar surroundings, without pain, at peace, and to the extent possible, reconciled. In addition to Medicare certification, Wissahickon Hospice is accredited by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). Wissahickon Hospice is affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania Health System, which allows for access to clinical, educational and research resources.

Would you recommend Heartland Hospice Services?

by Dana D. (18 июля 2016 г.)

I volunteered to pray with patients but was never actually placed for that position. When the last volunteer coordinator left, the new coordinator never bothered to reach out and introduce himself or get to know me as a volunteer. I was really disappointed, especially with the good rapport I felt I had with the previous one. I feel like I wasted more time than actually helping people.

by Laura B. (17 сентября 2013 г.)

I have been volunteering my time since my early 20’s and I volunteer for other organizations now, but I have never felt more appreciated or welcomed as a volunteer than Marisol, Dondra, and the nurses working for Heartland Hospice have made me feel. They really let you know that time is precious and you giving yours is the most selfless thing a person can do. I’m a friendly visitor for a very sweet lady and when she told me that she was glad she met me, I knew I was there for a reason. Volunteering with this organization is very fulfilling and you won’t be disappointed so if you’re looking to lend a hand or a compassionate ear, this is the place to do it.

by Natalie B. (12 сентября 2013 г.)

Volunteering at Heartland Hospice has allowed me to work around people who are so passionate about what they do in caring for their hospice patients that they see everyday. Even on slow days there is no lack of things to do around the office. I would recommend this organization to anyone who is interested in working for a non-profit or even for someone who is looking for an opportunity to volunteer their time at. Thank you Heartland Hospice!

by jihane s. (17 августа 2012 г.)

It’s for a very goog purpose. me and my friends have decided to take some time out of our time and help someone thats needs help.

by Lyn G. (6 октября 2011 г.)

Volunteering with Heartland Hospice is not JUST gaining community service hours, or keeping busy during your summer vacation- it’s a whole lot more than that. Even though I’m going to school to become a nurse, anyone can volunteer. Heartland Hospice gives recognition to their volunteers and they consider you a part of the team. Being a volunteer someone will always say thanks for volunteering with us or it’s so good to have you here. Nothing is more welcoming than making people happy, whether it’s the team or our hospice patients. Spending time with our patients lets them know that we care and we want them to feel enriched. We want our patients to know that we’re not there just to do it we’re there because we want to be. We show compassion and do what it takes to make a positive difference in their lives. At the end of the day, it’s a breath of fresh air for them, and for me!

Would you recommend Stein Hospice?

by Harington J. (10 июля 2015 г.)

It provides an opportunity for young individuals to interact and care for the elderly as well as give them an opportunity to explore the healthcare industry at its basic levels.

by Sara C. from Somerset, NJ (Administrator for this Organization) (6 января 2014 г.)

As written by a past volunteer: My experience as a volunteer with Martin and Edith Stein Hospice has been the single most meaningful healthcare experience. I visited different kinds of patients; verbal, non-verbal, immobile, Jewish, Christian, white and black. It is hard to characterize a typical hospice patient; the dying process manifests itself differently with each person. I was able to experience first hand how family members, volunteers, staff nurse and hospice aides worked together as a team to uphold dignity. It was rewarding to know that my role as a volunteer was an essential part of providing excellent end-of life care.

Would you recommend VITAS Healthcare of SF Bay Area?

by C T. (16 октября 2011 г.)

Enjoy making the memory bear to help families in need. Expect and feel excited to participate in the Chinese Bereavement support group.

by Christina T. (27 сентября 2011 г.)

I am a middle school teacher and brought some of my students here to volunteer and earn community service hours. Kayla, the Director of Volunteers, was very helpful, friendly, and the kids loved her! Because of their young age, my students were only able to complete clerical work in the Vitas office, but they had a fun time. It was a chance for them to see what the real world was all about. At the end of their two hour shifts, the students always asked Kayla if they could stay longer. I would highly recommend Vitas for anyone looking for a satisfying volunteer experience. If my students and I had a great time in the office just folding and labeling fliers, you will have a great time working one-on-one with hospice patients!

by Shamalah-Allah S. (26 сентября 2011 г.)

VITAS is a super great organization. They have excellent training and various opportunities to work with people in need. If you are busy with a full time job and still want to volunteer, you can still participate and volunteer as little as a few hours a week if you want. The staff is warm and welcoming. I highly recommend you give them a try.

Patient Care Technician Jobs

Patient Technician Job Overview

Patient technicians work closely in the care and treatment of patients in hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers and other healthcare facilities. In this role, patient technicians work alongside other healthcare professionals, such as nurses, physicians, and X-Ray Technologists when providing care. The main job duties might include taking vital signs and assisting patients with basic functions such as eating, bathing and grooming. Another important role of the patient technician is keeping careful and complete records of the patient’s treatment and progress. Since healthcare jobs are in such a stable career field, it is a great option for those who enjoy working with all types of patients.

Patient Technician Job Education Requirements

Most general patient technician positions require education through a community or technical college. After completing the courses in biology, nursing, human resuscitation, human anatomy, pharmacology and other related subjects, the program also includes hands-on training hours in a medical facility. Some patient technicians take courses to learn how to provide more specialized care, such as an education in radiology to work as an MRI technician. There is an option to take a National Certified Patient Care Technician exam, which opens doors for higher paying positions. In order to maintain the license, technicians must complete 14 hours of continuing education per year.

Patient Technician Job Market

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 21 percent growth of patient technician jobs in the United States in the next decade. This number is higher than the national average for job growth. The increased demand for healthcare services is partly due to new federal regulations, which have given more people health insurance benefits, as well as the aging population that is living longer and requiring medical care. Those who choose to take the national certification exam might be able to find jobs more easily, since more clinics and healthcare facilities are requiring this certification to qualify for jobs.

Patient Technician Job Salary Information

The median hourly wage for patient technician is $11.97, according to the BLS. There are opportunities for growth and advancement in the healthcare field for those who are willing and eager to learn more and earn more education. Those who want to go into the patient technician field should have strong organizational skills, be attentive and sympathetic to problems that patients will have, and pay close attention to detail, since they will work with medical records and documentation.

Saint Jude Hospice is an organization inspired by the words of Jesus Christ: “Love one another as I have loved you.” Strengthened by our values and led by our Servant Hearts, we deliver the highest quality of care and always adhere to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.

Saint Jude Hospice volunteers provide support, comfort and companionship for patients and families during a vulnerable and sacred time in their life. Volunteers are trained to listen to patients and support families in patients’ homes, assisted-living facilities or nursing homes.

These special volunteers provide emotional, spiritual, and physical support to patients and families; provide respite for caregiver to get out of the home; help patients write a life review; play games; help with shopping; meal preparation; or give assistance with light housekeeping. Direct Patient Care Volunteers can also provide transportation, deliver medications, and can offer specialized skills as needed.

Office Volunteer

Heart ‘n Home values and appreciates individuals who have skills and abilities that can be utilized in an office setting. Whether it’s answering phones, filing, typing or even cleaning the office; your help is appreciated!

Youth Volunteer

Heart ‘n Home welcomes Volunteers of all ages! There are many contributions that individuals under the age of 18 can do to have a lasting impact in their communities. All Heart ‘n Home Volunteers are encouraged to determine where they would like to contribute and Heart ‘n Home strives to place them in a place where they feel they are making the biggest difference. Youth Volunteers must have a trained adult Volunteer, the patient’s caregiver, or facility staff either physically present or within the vicinity when volunteering directly with a patient.

Special Services Volunteer

Heart ‘n Home patients and families also appreciate services and support from Licensed Beauticians, Massage Therapist, Music Therapist, and/or Pet Therapists. Special Services Volunteers hold a specialized license or certification and follow established rules set out by the state in which they are employed.

Bereavement Volunteer

Heart ‘n Home Bereavement Volunteers are generally Direct Patient Care Volunteers who want to continue a relationship with a family after their patient has passed away. As a Bereavement Volunteer, you can make home visits or phone calls to those grieving the loss of a loved one. You will also assist the Bereavement Coordinator with Heart ‘n Home Grief and Loss Support Groups as well as help with clerical duties and record keeping.

11th Hour Volunteer

Heart ‘n Home 11th Hour Volunteers are trained to be able to sit with hospice patients and know the signs and symptoms to expect at end-of-life. Our 11th Hour Volunteers provide support through the act of being “present” as they assist patients and families during the last hours of life. As an 11th Hour Volunteer, you will provide companionship to ensure that no one dies alone. You will reduce stress and anxiety by providing information; guidance; and emotional, physical, and spiritual support. 11th Hour Volunteers also do other tasks such as picking up the family from the airport, getting food for the family, or running errands, depending on the needs of each situation.

Veteran Volunteers

Are you a Veteran? Veteran Volunteers can assist Heart ‘n Home patients by providing an outlet for discussing events or situations that happened in an event of war and can help provide closure to patients. As a Veteran Volunteer, you may provide the last opportunity for Veterans to feel that their service was not in vain and that they are appreciated. Veteran Volunteers get to engage, honor, and recognize the Veterans we serve. Also, as a Veteran, you may have been through similar situations, providing a way to relate and discuss events that may be very beneficial to those at end of life.

Would you recommend Heartland Hospice – Blue Bell, PA?

by MARIA W. (15 августа 2014 г.)

Heartland Hospice is great to volunteer with because they provide training and only gave me volunteer opportunities that worked with my schedule, and close to home!

by mary T. (15 августа 2014 г.)

Heartland Hospice is a wonderful organization helping people in difficult situations. Looking someone in the eye and treating them with dignity and love is an incredibly rewarding experience. It seems like elderly dementia patients are not visited as often as others but I believe that a kind touch and word still touches the soul and makes a difference.

by Joan E. (26 апреля 2014 г.)

Heartland has provided me with so many opportunities to serve a most diverse group of wonderful folks. The people I visit give to me tenfold anything I do for them. Heartland offers me the gift of connecting with very special people who will always live in my heart. I appreciate the support and encouragement of Lisa, the volunteer coordinator at Heartland. She is always available for my questions or concerns. If you want a powerful and amazing life experience, volunteer your time through Heartland.

Volunteer Opportunities with St. Jude Hospice

A letter from the Volunteer Coordinator of St Jude Hospice

RE: Volunteers wanted for Saint Jude Hospice

Saint Jude Hospice has volunteer opportunities available! We are a Catholic hospice serving terminally ill patients in your community. Our mission is to provide Radical Loving Care to bring healing to those when their hope has changed from a cure to comfort. We do this by offering comprehensive hospice services including medical care, homemaker services, emotional and spiritual support, respite services, medication management, music therapy, bereavement care, and volunteer services.

Beyond patient care, there are integral roles in behind-the-scenes support of this agency that volunteers can fulfill. Each volunteer is provided with a job description relevant to their assigned position, fully trained and integrated as a team member of their office. Most hospice volunteers find it personally gratifying, stimulating, and emotionally meaningful to assist those in need. Volunteers generally work flexible hours based on their individual goals and interests.

We would love for you to share that we are looking for volunteers with your congregation: young, elderly, and all in between. You can post an announcement in your bulletin or hang one of our flyers on a bulletin board. Please share my contact information for anyone interested or call our office if you have any questions about Saint Jude Hospice and our services.

I have been a volunteer with Advocate Hospice for over a year. I agree with Nancy M. that the staff is so dedicated and caring. Advocate Hospice is a wonderful organization that cares for their patients, families and their volunteers. I find it very rewarding to know that I may have made some smile, given respite care for a family member or just lent an ear when needed. Kudos to a wonderful organization!

The professionals at Life Choice Hospice were extremely helpful in getting me set up as both a patient visitor and office admin volunteer. The Willingboro office in particular has an outstanding team of folks, lead by Director of Volunteers Ms. Sharon Caccamo, who have made my volunteer experience rewarding. Also, I am an Air Force Veteran and the Willingboro office goes to great lengths to show kindness to veterans and I am thankful for everyone at Life Choice Hospice!

They are very friendly and accommodating, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to volunteer this summer because I didn’t have enough time but Life Choice took the time to meet me, had personalized training sessions to fit my schedule and got me started right away and I love where I’m volunteering, the staff is fantastic and the patients are great

I have been an administrative volunteer at Life Choice in NJ for almost 2 years, and it has been a terrific experience. Sharon, the volunteer coordinator, is so nice. She always has a smile on her face and makes me feel both useful and appreciated. I learned many useful things from the training which will be helpful to me in dealing with my elderly relatives. Also Sharon has been flexible with my very crazy schedule. I get thanked by everyone at Life Choice, but really I am the one who should be thanking them because I gain so much from volunteering!

    by Harington J.
