The loss of a loved one touches each member of the family, including children. To help young people through their bereavement, Optimal Hospice Foundation created Kids Camp. This over-night summer camp program is specially designed for young people ages 8 – 16 that have experienced the loss of an loved one in the recent past.

At Kids Camp, young people enjoy traditional camping activities, such as swimming and hiking, in an atmosphere where both staff and fellow campers understand their special needs. Kids Camp is held in the Bakersfield, Fresno, and Northern California (LIvermore) areas and is open to the community – attendees loved one did not have to utilize hospice services. The Fresno Camp is held in mid July, Bakersfield in early August and NORCAL in mid August.

Optimal Hospice Foundation would like to recognize The Taylor Family Foundation for hosting our NORCAL Kids Camp held at The Taylor Family Foundation at Camp Arroyo in 2015 and again in 2016. The Taylor Family Foundation’s mission is to preserve the wellness and enhance the quality of life for children in Northern California with life-threatening and chronic illnesses, disabilities and youth at-risk through unique therapeutic experiences and support. For more information, please visit www.ttff.org. ion, please visit www.ttff.org.

This innovative experience is available at no cost to families, thanks to generous support from the community. Camp participants may be referred by school counselors, healthcare providers, family members and other individuals.

Click on the Kids Camp link below for a look at what Kids Camp has to offer. Activities vary from camp to camp based on the facility, however the essence and message is the same. The video was made possible via a grant from the Kern Community Foundation.

Review this business:

Manteca resident and caregiver to my 98 year old grandmother.

The staff at optimal that handled my situation where extremely

professional, caring and dedicated.

Special thanks to Debbie the ‘intake’ nurse. I completely trusted her advice on the future

care of my grandmother I felt very confident after her evaluation of our situation, that it was

the right time for Hospice.

The phone operators always put me right in touch with a nurse if I had any questions.

The Chaplin Victor who offered solace in the form of prayer, which we ended up asking to speak at the service – my grandmother would have approved.

And most of all my rock, Nurse Renee. Her visits I so depended on for support and guidance.

She made my life and my grandmother’s endurable – she came and stayed for as long as it

took and then some. a very devoted individual – perfect for this duty. I’m so happy to have had her there for the both of us.

Thankfully my gram passed peacefully during the night.

Caring Support when it matters the most!

Myth : Hospice means giving up hope.

Fact: Hospice does not mean “giving up hope”, but can help people revise what they may hope for. Hospice focuses on maximizing the quality of life based on individual’s choices, so that the person may live life as fully as possible for as long as possible.

Myth : Hospice is a place.

Fact : Hospice care usually takes place in the home, but can be provided in any environment in which you live, including nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and residential care facilities.

Myth: Hospice means that the patient will soon die.

Fact: Receiving hospice care does not mean giving up hope or that death is imminent. The earlier an individual receives hospice care, the more opportunity there is to stabilize the medical condition and address other needs. While hospice care is generally focused on patients where life expectancy is six months or less, some individuals actually improve and may be discharged from hospice care. They can then be re-admitted later when it is necessary.

Myth: Hospice is only for elderly individuals.

Fact: Hospice care is for individuals of all ages facing a life-threatening illness.

Myth : Hospice is only for cancer patients.

Fact: Hospice care is available to all terminally ill individuals and their families, regardless of diagnosis. Some of the most common non-cancer diagnosis are congestive heart failure, dementia, chronic lung disease, failure to thrive, or other conditions.

Myth: Individuals have to give up their own doctor.

Fact: Individuals may keep their own physician, who will work closely with the Optimal Hospice team of healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and medical social workers to plan and carry out care.

Myth: Individuals can only receive hospice are for six months; therefore enrollment should be delayed as long as possible.

Fact: Medicare, Medi-Cal, and most private insurance pays for hospice care as long as the individual meets the medical criteria, which may result in receiving hospice care longer than six months. Some individuals actually improve and may be discharged from hospice care. They can re-enroll in hospice care when necessary.

Myth: Hospice provides 24 hour care.

Fact: Hospice care is base upon intermittent visits but is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for support and care. Hospice can help the family arrange 24 hour care by a private duty attendant if necessary.

Myth: Families have to pay for hospice care.

Fact: Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medi-Cal and most private insurances. Optimal Hospice Care and Optimal Hospice Foundation want all families to have access to hospice care, regardless of their ability to pay. The Optimal Hospice Foundation is there to fill the gap for families who are uninsured or whose insurance benefits have run out.

Myth: Hospice is just for the patient.

Fact: Hospice provides comfort care to patients, as well as respite and emotional support to family members. The quality of life – not only for the patient, but also family members and others who are caregivers – is the highest priority. Bereavement support is offered for at lest a year following the death of a loved one.

Optimal Hospice volunteer training

BAKERSFIELD, CA – Optimal Hospice is looking for volunteers. Whether it’s a skill or just time, organizers say everyone has something to offer.

Assistant volunteer coordinator Karen Budnick says volunteers play an important role in hospice.

Budnick said, They’re able to give family members a break so that they can step away and some times it’s just so they can go to the grocery store or go to a doctor’s appointment.

Thursday morning, new volunteers learned more about their role.

It’s end of life, which I think that a lot of us are not comfortable with the end of life, but when you realize that it’s living life to the fullest and helping somebody do that, it really captures your heart, said Budnick.

Volunteer Tim Brewer said, There’s a whole lot of satisfaction in just giving, period.

Brewer is part of the veteran to veteran program, providing support to patients and family members who served in the military.

We would love to have more veteran volunteers, pet therapy, really any type of volunteers. We have volunteers that cut hair, massage, visit, listen to wonderful stories, said Budnick.

No matter what your specialty, the compassion is welcome.

If you’d like to get involved, call Optimal Hospice volunteer department 661-716-4000.

    Optimal Hospice Care

Optimal hospice is very fast on the get-go. I had an admit. nurse at my house within 8 hours of calling.
My 93+ grandparent needed immediate hospice care. Thankfully their quality of life is improving by the day. They kept my grandparent very comfortable in their time of crisis. I would definitely label this comfort care and would recommend to others in my situation. Relief for full time non paid family caregiver .

Only reason for 4/5 stars vs full stars is that we on occasion have scheduling conflicts.

Medicare fraud! This organization is so fraudulent it makes me sick. They make Kaiser patient think they have no other choice but to go on their hospice which is illegal. All patients have a choice do not let them fool you. They send their marketers out to do assessments when In fact per medicare guidelines it must be a clinician. I will be filing a formal complaint with Medicare and California department of public health today.
