Foyle Hospice call out for Camino de Santiago

The Foyle Hospice has issued a call out to local people seeking the adventure of a lifetime to join its group walk along the Camino de Santiago.

The local group are due to set off on the French route of the ancient pilgrim’s trail in May 2016.

The Camino de Santiago team will be departing Dublin and flying with Aer Lingus to the start of the 100km trek.

A spokesman for the Foyle Hospice said: “This is perfect for those looking to capture the essence of the Camino, a nice walk with good food and discovering local customs, meeting fellow pilgrims and enjoying the unique atmosphere of it all. You won’t forget a single minute of it.

“This section of the Camino de Santiago starts in Sarria and covers the last 100km of the Camino Francés, the minimum required to apply for your Compostela certificate.

“The Camino will take you across woodlands, farmland and rustic hamlets, following tracks and paths lined by granite stone walls. The green rolling landscape of Galicia is part of each day’s walk, until you approach your final destination: the mythical city of Santiago de Compostela.”

Upon arrival, local people will be able to collect their ‘Compostela’ certificate and explore the magic of Santiago’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“We will look after all travel accommodation and will have guides with us at all times on the walk,” the spokesman said.

Outpatient Detoxification: The First Step On The Road to Recovery

How We Help You Detoxify Safely and Comfortably

If I knew that this was going to be this easy, I would have come in for treatment sooner.

Current treatment protocols make the process of detoxification much more comfortable than it was in the past. Here are important things to know about the detoxification program at Kolmac:

  • We want you to stop using substances the night before you come in and can relieve any morning withdrawal symptoms rapidly after you arrive. If you use substances on the day you come in, the process of detoxification is delayed. Current medications substantially relieve or eliminate acute withdrawal symptoms from alcohol, opioids, and tranquillizers very quickly.
  • On the first day, be prepared to remain at our office for 4 to 8 hours.
  • You will see a Kolmac detoxification nurse as well as one of our psychiatrists or psychiatric nurse practitioners.
  • We use the most up to date medication protocols for each substance and modify our protocols as improvements become available. We choose medications that have the highest levels of effectiveness and lowest level of side effects.
  • We individualize your medication dose to assure optimal symptom relief without giving you more medication than you need.
  • You participate in the decision about dosing, according to your comfort preferences.
  • We send you home with a small supply of medication and have you return the next day. When the withdrawal will be an extended one, we provide you with prescriptions.

Why You Are Better Off Detoxifying In An Outpatient Setting

  1. No Waiting: You will be seen quickly by our medical staff rather than having to sit in the hospital emergency room or wait for transfer up to the medical floor.
  2. More Intensive: You are seen by the Kolmac medical staff every hour compared to every 2 to 3 hours or more on a hospital floor.
  3. No Rush to Taper Medication Too Rapidly: Hospitals are under pressure to discharge patients rapidly so the detoxification process can sometimes be rushed. Gradual tapering of detoxification medication and the management of protracted withdrawal symptoms can continue to be managed by Kolmac medical staff as long as necessary.

We welcome the opportunity to help you in your road to recovery. If you d like to learn more about the Kolmac Outpatient Recovery Centers, feel free to contact us at 301-589-0255 or 410-296-9747, or complete the form below.

4 Alternatives To A Cash-Out Refinance

Cash-Out Refinance Not Always The Cheapest Money Source

If you need money for things like home improvements, debt consolidation, or investments, you may be tempted by a cash-out refinance. That means you refinance with a larger loan than you need to pay off your old mortgage, and take the difference in cash at the closing.

What Is Cash-Out Refinancing?

This refinance might be the best and cheapest source of funds, but it could also be an expensive mistake.

Here’s what you need to know before you apply.

The Added Cost Of Cash-Out Refinancing

The biggest drawback of most cash-out refinancing is the added fee, and the way lenders calculate it. Fannie Mae. for instance, charges .375 percent to 3.125 percent of the entire loan amount in risk-based surcharges for a cash-out refinance.

That’s right — you calculate the fee based on the entire loan amount, not just the cash out.

If you want a relatively large amount of cash, the deal may make sense, because mortgage rates are usually much lower than other types of borrowing.

Loan-Level Pricing Adjustments (LLPA): A Complete Guide For Mortgage Borrowers

However, if your loan amount is large, and the amount of cash is not, it could be an expensive way to borrow.

Suppose you refinance a $400,000 mortgage, with an additional $20,000 in cash out. If your surcharge is 1.875 percent, that’s a cost of $7,875, which is almost40 percent of the cash you want.

You’d be better off using a credit card or hitting up your local loan shark.

Cash-Out Refinancing = More Hoops

A cash-out refinance is not quick cash you’ll repay fast. Underwriting and eligibility guidelines are stricter for these loans and they can take longer to close than shorter term financing.

For instance, Fannie Mae allows you to purchase or refinance primary homes with 97 percent loans, as long as you don’t take cash out. But you can only go to 80 percent if you want cash out.

What Credit Score Do You Need For A Mortgage?

Loans that require minimum FICO scores of 660 for cash-out only mandate 620 scores for purchases.

It is worth noting that you can avoid the surcharges and stricter underwriting by choosing government-backed refinances like FHA and VA. Those programs have their own sets of upfront fees, though, and they may not make sense if you have significant home equity.

Stretching Out Repayment, Sucking Up Home Equity

Cash-out refinancing means you’ll have a bigger mortgage and probably a higher payment. You’ll also burn up some home equity, an asset just like your 401(k) or bank balance.

This is not something to do lightly.

Refinance Your Loan To Current Mortgage Rates Without “Starting Over” At 30 Years

In addition, taking a cash-out refinance means resetting the clock on your home loan. You pay more over time by adding those extra years and interest to a new mortgage.

Fortunately, there are alternatives that can be cheaper and safer.

Reinforcing Bad Spending Habits

If the reason for your cash-out refinance is consolidation of consumer debt, consider other options before you take out this loan. Depleting home equity to pay of debt accrued buying things that don’t outlast the debt is poor money management.

Too Much Debt To Buy Or Refinance A Home? Here’s Your Plan

This method of paying those debts frees up your credit for you to spend yourself into financial trouble again. Then you might be temped to do another cash-out refi to pay this new debt, making this a vicious circle.

Foreclosure Risks Are Real

Several Federal Reserve studies found defaults on cash-out refinances are higher than for regular refinancing. When home values fell a few years ago, homeowners who had tapped their equity often found themselves owing more than their property was worth.

Boomerang Buyers Can Get A Mortgage After Deed In Lieu Of Foreclosure

If either home values or your income drop substantially anytime during the loan term, you could face loss of your home. Without equity, it’s very hard to sell if you need to move or if your payments become unaffordable.

When Is A Cash-Out Refinance The Best Option?

The cash-out refinance can be your best choice in these cases:

  • The amount of cash you want is high relative to the balance of the loan you’re replacing, and the terms of the new loan are better than those of your current loan.
  • You need a large sum and want a government-backed loan and will finance more than 80 percent of your home value. Government loans like FHA and VA let you take more cash and don’t have risk-based surcharges.

How To Refinance Your Home With Maximum Cash Out

Ask lenders to show you other options and help you compare costs when you’re considering cash-out refinancing.

Alternative #1: Home Equity Line Of Credit (HELOC)

This is often a better financing strategy if you don’t need a large lump sum for a big purchase or project. A HELOC also makes good sense if you already have ideal loan terms.

HELOC Or Home Equity Loan? What’s Best For You?

With its lower closing costs and added flexibility, a HELOC is usually less costly than a cash-out refinance, and it takes less time to close. There aren’t limitations on its use, and you only pay interest on the amount of credit used.

You can use the funds for any purpose, including home improvement projects, annual costs like college tuition, or financing a gap in business revenue.

Alternative #2: Personal Loan

Personal loans, also called signature loans, are faster to process and much easier to get than mortgages. You can use a personal loan for home improvements, debt consolidation, major purchases or other expenses.

Instead of repaying the loan for 15-30 years, you’ll pay this debt off in five years at most. The interest rate depends on your credit rating, and will probably be higher than that of a mortgage.

Cash-Out Refinance Vs. Home Equity Loan: The Better Deal Might Surprise You

However, the costs are low, and with a shorter term, you’ll still pay less over its life than with a cash-out refinance.

It might also improve your credit by adding another line of credit to your credit history. This could be valuable if you’ve had recent financial challenges that damaged your credit .

Alternative 3: Refinance Your First Mortgage, Add A Second Mortgage

If you can improve on the terms of your first mortgage, that doesn’t mean a cash-out refinance is automatically your best deal.

Depending on the amount of cash you want, it might be less expensive to refinance your first mortgage with a cheaper rate-and term loans, and then add a second mortgage.

This can be a fixed home equity loan (best when you need a lump sum) or a HELOC (best for ongoing needs over time).

Alternative 4: Find Other Sources Of Cash

If you have vehicle loans at high interest rates, see if you can refinance them. That will give you lower payments and the you can use the savings to pay other debt.

Look at selling valuable collections, luxury items or things you’re not using. If there’s still debt left after your selling spree, see a credit counselor about restructuring that to pay it off. They also can help you develop better spending habits.

Consider starting a side hustle using high-demand skills you already have. Look for ways to generate income in the gig economy but carefully research their costs and legal requirements.

Borrow from family, applying for zero-interest balance transfer credit cards, or borrow against your 401(k) and deduct payments from your paycheck.

These options reduce your debt load or give you better terms than a cash-out refi or even other credit.

What Are Today’s Mortgage Rates?

Current mortgage rates for rate-and-term refinances and cash-out refinancing are affordably low. However, you still need to compare options and shop among competing mortgage lenders to pay as little as possible for your next loan.

How to Remove Grease Stains from Leather

Kelli asked: How do I clean butter from leather boots? I dripped melted butter onto my leather boots and can t get it off. Can you help?

Grease and oil stains can be tricky to remove from leather. The residue left behind seems to leave a permanent mark. Use the method below to draw the grease out of the leather and remove the stain for good.

You Will Need:

  • Talcum powder or another absorbent powder
  • Lint free soft cloths (microfiber cloths work well)

Steps to Remove the Stains:

  1. Blot the stain with a microfiber cloth. Remove as much of the grease as possible.
  2. Cover the stain liberally with talcum powder or another absorbent powder, such as cornstarch or wheat germ.
  3. Allow the powder to sit on the stain overnight. The powder will draw the grease and moisture out of the leather.
  4. In the morning, brush off the powder and the stain will be gone.

Additional Tips and Advice

  • Similar to the grain of wood, leather has a lie or a line of texture to it. If possible, apply any cleaning products following the lie. If you can t see the direction of the texture, work from the outside of the stain towards the center.
  • If the leather is not protected, the grease will soak in and will be nearly impossible to remove completely. Treating the stain immediately is your best bet for any chance of removing the stain. Once set, you may be able to lighten it with the method above.
  • If the leather has a protective finish on it, a water-based leather cleaner should remove the stains. Apply the cleaner following the package guidelines.
  • For stubborn or serious grease stains, a leather degreaser can be used. Follow the instructions on the label of your selected product.
  • Once clean, apply a stain guard to the leather surface. This will allow for easier clean up and stain removal for future spills.

FHA Refinancing

Changes in the housing market have given you-and thousands of other Americans-the option to refinance your current home mortgage with a FHA Refinance.

FHA Refinancing is a better option if you have a fair to good credit rating because, generally, FHA standards are less strict. Even if you likely will not qualify for conventional refinancing because of your income level, a FHA Refinance may still be an option for you.

FHA Refinance Requirements

There are some requirements that may apply when trying to refinance your current loan with the FHA. Keep in mind the following are simply guidelines-each borrower’s situation is different.

  • The mortgage that is to be refinanced must ultimately be insured through the FHA.
  • The current mortgage must be current and not delinquent.
  • The results of the refinance must lower the monthly principle and interest payments for the borrower.
  • No cash may be taken out on mortgages refinanced using the streamline refinance process.

Other Information on FHA Refinances

Fha refinance cash out

One Streamline Refinancing option you have is one that includes the closing costs into the new mortgage amount. This of course is only available if enough equity is in the home after it is appraised. The streamline refinance can occur without an appraisal but the new loan will not be able to exceed the original loan amount. If you are not living in the property (i.e., it is an investment property), the refinance can only occur without an appraisal.

FHA Loans by State

The FHA Home Loan Program

The FHA has been insuring loans since the 1930’s, and their refinancing department has been around since the early 1980’s. The FHA/HUD also offers the option of FHA Streamline Refinancing . The “streamline” refers to the amount of paperwork and underwriting involved and not to a monetary factor (such as being cheaper or having no cost at all).

Gluten-Free/Casein-Free Diets for Autism

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are developmental disorders that affect children by disrupting their ability to communicate and interact socially. To reduce a child’s symptoms of autism. parents often try alternative treatments such as specialized diets. Lately, the gluten-free/casein -free diet has grown in popularity. Some parents report improvements in autism symptoms with this dietary regimen.

Little research has been done, though, on the gluten-free/casein -free diet for autism. Consequently, many parents wonder whether this diet really does, in fact, make a difference in the symptoms of children with autism. Some also believe that children with autism restrict their own intake, because they prefer bland food like white bread. Thus the question becomes “Chicken or egg.” Is the gluten causing the autism, or, more likely, is the autism limiting the child’s variety of food intake?

What is a gluten-free/casein-free diet for autism?

A gluten-free/casein -free diet is also known as the GFCF diet. It is one of several alternative treatments for children with autism. When following this strict elimination diet, all foods containing gluten ( found in wheat, barley and rye) and casein ( found in milk and dairy products) are removed from the child’s daily food intake.

Some parents of children with autism believe their children are allergic or sensitive to the components found in these foods. Some seek allergy testing for confirmation. Yet, even when no allergy is confirmed, many parents of autistic children still choose to offer the GFCF diet. Among the benefits they report are changes in speech and behavior.

How does a gluten-free/casein-free diet for autism work?

The benefit of a gluten-free/casein-free diet is based on the theory that children with autism may have an allergy or high sensitivity to foods containing gluten or casein. Children with autism, according to the theory, process peptides and proteins in foods containing gluten and casein differently than other people do. Hypothetically, this difference in processing may exacerbate autistic symptoms. Some believe that the brain treats these proteins like false opiate-like chemicals. The reaction to these chemicals, they say, leads a child to act in a certain way. The idea behind the use of the diet is to reduce symptoms and improve social and cognitive behaviors and speech.

Continued

There may be some scientific merit to the reasoning behind a gluten-free/casein-free diet. Researchers have found abnormal levels of peptides in bodily fluids of some people who have symptoms of autism. Still, the effectiveness of a GFCF diet for autism has not been supported by medical research; in fact, a review of recent and past studies concluded there is a lack of scientific evidence to say whether this diet can be helpful or not.

Unfortunately, eliminating all sources of gluten and casein is so difficult that conducting randomized clinical trials in children may prove to be very difficult.

Which foods contain gluten?

Gluten is a mix of various proteins found in the seeds of several grains such as barley, rye, and wheat. A huge number of foods contain gluten. Gluten provides structure or binding to baked products. While it’s quite difficult to avoid gluten, many stores, particularly natural food stores, display foods in a gluten-free area of the store. Still, it’s important to read nutrition labels to see if there are additives containing gluten.

When someone is on a gluten-free diet, most bread and grain products are forbidden. Therefore, it is important to make sure that the child (or other person) receives ample fiber, vitamins. and minerals. Supplementation can help make up for the lack of these nutrients when foods containing gluten are eliminated.

Which foods contain casein?

Casein is a protein found in dairy products and other foods containing dairy or lactose. Even foods proclaiming to be dairy-free or lactose-free contain casein. Because many soy products and imitation dairy products also contain casein, it’s important to read labels carefully when following a strict casein free diet.

Because the GFCF diet for autism restricts dairy products, you’ll need to make sure the child’s diet has other good sources of calcium and vitamin D. Both are necessary for strong bones and teeth. Talk with your child’s doctor about fortified foods and/or supplementation to avoid any nutritional deficiencies.

Are there tips for eating at home or eating out on a gluten-free/casein-free diet?

There are a large number of online retailers who specialize in food products for people following the GFCF diet. Some parents make GFCF food in large quantities and freeze portions for a later meal.

Continued

Before making the change to a GFCF diet, consult your child’s doctor. A licensed dietitian can educate you about the GFCF diet and help you tailor the diet to your child’s health needs and taste preferences.

In addition, before starting a child with autism on a gluten-free/casein-free diet, beware the hidden sources of gluten. Gluten can be found in fried foods that are dusted in flour, and even in cosmetics. Whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts may be safe. But avoid using packaged mixes because there may be traces of foods containing gluten that are not listed on the nutrition label.

Some restaurants are now categorized as GFCF-friendly. If you are concerned, ask the manager or server to show you a list of ingredients used in the establishment to make sure its dishes are gluten- and casein-free. Vegetarian/vegan restaurants are accustomed to serving people on special diets and may be more willing to prepare dishes that adhere to the restrictions of a strict GFCF diet.

1) Repiping in a home begins at the transition point.

2) The transition point is the point where the potable water system enters the building from the exterior of the building.

3) Repiping a potable water system means you totally abandon the existing potable system and replace it with a new system.

4) The first step in repiping your home is masking or “covering” the floors, and this must be completed before the walls are masked off. This overlap “ enveloped ” system allows the plastic sheeting to be rolled up in one continuous motion.

5) Cutting the sheetrock: You will be shocked at how little sheetrock has to be removed for the layout and installation of a new potable water system. The better the repiper. the smaller and fewer the drywall holes!

6) A “GREEN REPIPE” potable water system refers to a Pex repipe potable system only – such as UPONOR or ZURN with corrosion resistant fittings. CPVC and copper systems are not green systems.

7) The drywall pieces that are removed must be used in the patching process as each texture is a little different in thickness. This gives you a uniform surface thickness as you start the repair process. Each piece goes back in the hole it came from.

8) Repipe with an approved material. There are currently three main materials used in pex repiping jobs across the US: copper pipe and fittings, CPVC pipe and fittings, and PEX repipe and fittings. (DO NOT USE CPVC, IT IS THE NEXT POLYBUTYLENE)

9) Repipe inspections must be performed by the local building inspectors after the repipe is completed, with the system under full water pressure.

10) The signed inspection card must be given to the homeowner after the PEX repipe inspection is completed.

11) Drywall repair begins after all the necessary backing has been installed. Backing supports the drywall pieces that were removed to access the potable water pipes and accommodate the repiping of a new Pex repipe or copper potable water system.

12) The fiberglass mesh tape must be used 100% of the time.

13) The patches must be pre-filled with quick set patching compound. The compound comes in 18lb bags, and because it is a powder, it must be mixed with water. This locks the perimeter of each patch and will make the area of the patch stronger than it was before the work process began. The reason this is important is that when you close the doors in the house, the walls flex just a little bit, and if you do not perform this method of repair, the patch will fracture over time from the flex/vibration caused by shutting the doors.

14) Do not coat the drywall patches with regular all-purpose joint compound on the repipe patches. This is a common practice and the patches will crack later 100% of the time, even if it’s years later.

15) Coat all the repipe drywall patches with quick set patching compound only. USG will do and you can find it at any home and hardware store, or you will have fractures in the walls at the patch locations.

16) Float all the walls with quick set patching compound and use a 12″ drywall knife and stagger each coat until the walls become smooth and flat. The next step is wet sanding the patches and this must be done if you want the patches to blend in perfectly after the texture is applied. The reason you’ve seen bad patches in the past is that repairmen do not know how to “kill the edges.” This is an old drywall term that means you must do the detail wet sanding work and there is no short cut.

17) Texture to match the existing texture, and this is not as easy as you might think. This is a real art form for the few that know what they are doing. Also, if the texture is spray texture, you must sponge off the overspray for the texture to match. Nothing gives away the location of a patch more than overspray that is painted over and not “killing the edges.”

18) Paint to match the existing paint. All repipe companies color match the same way. They run down to their local hardware store and have the computer color matching done by the man behind the counter. This is beginner color matching. The proper way to color match is hand color matching. First, match the paint sheen. Second, computer match for the base color. Third, tint for color adjustment. Fourth, match the color and sheen after the paint sample has dried. Repeat if necessary. Did you know that the paint color on the wall after it dries will be different than the paint color while it is wet and in the can?

19) If you follow the basic repiping rules, after a very short time you will not be able to point out all the drywall patches from the repair. You will simply forget where the holes were due to the patches receiving the proper floating, texture and painting techniques. Your friends, neighbors, relatives, and even plumbing contractors will not be able to find the patches.

20) This is a basic guideline for a home repipe. and if done, properly you will have a repipe that was done as well as a repipe can be done.

At Integrity Repipe. we provide total abandonment of your existing potable system, and there are never hidden extras, and we don’t hire subcontractors. How To Dry Out A Wet Cell Phone – Dropped In The

DIY APPLIANCE REPLACEMENT PARTS
ALL MAJOR NAME BRAND PARTS
FAST ORDERING – SAME DAY SHIPPING

We recently dropped our Android Motorola cell phone into the toilet. Yep, it happens. We did everything possible and very quickly to get it dry and surprisingly, it now works perfectly. Here are a few ways to dry it off as fast as possible to see if it will ever turn back on.

  1. First, QUICKLY take the cell phone apart by removing every component. The case, the cover, the battery, the SIM card, the memory card.
  2. Dry everything off with a towel. The phone will be wet internally so spin and twist it around in the air to get any excess water out of it.
  3. Get a hair dryer and get some warm air moving over top of the phone. Try and have the hot air flow over the phone and evaporate the moisture. Once you have gotten all of the water and moisture out of the phone you possibly can, fill a large bowl with rice.
  4. Put your phone in the rice and bury it. Rice pulls out moisture and this trick will remove the excess moisture from the inside of your phone. Ever see a salt shaker full of rice? Same principal, the rice keeps the salt dry therefore it can be dispensed without sticking.Give your phone a FULL DAY in the rice.
  5. Take the phone out of the rice and cross your fingers. Put the components back in the phone and try turning it on. If will not turn on, grab an extra battery or charge it up as it may be drained. If your phone won t turn back on then it may be DEAD. You can try the wet phone drying procedure again and hope for the best.

If you cannot afford a brand new phone, try checking on auction sites like Ebay or free classified ad websites like Craigs List.
You can also buy a prepaid phone from the same carrier you use, stick your previous working SIM card in it and you have a phone to use instantly.

Uhmmm i accidentally put my phone closer to the window and i didn t know it would rain so i freak out. i don t know what to do. i just charged it but it AUTOMATICALLY went ON by itself without pressing the POWER button. so i m curious why it happened that way. I ve tried everything to dry it up and make sure it will work NORMALLY after that BUT i can t touch or move the touch screen part of my android.

Pls help me i want my phone back and i have important things inside it.
thank you for you kind consideration.

Hi Chris,
Once a phone gets wet, always remove the battery. Separate as many pieces of the phone as you can (case, protectors, back panel). Wipe any excess water off all parts of the phone with a towel and place the pieces in the sun if possible. If you have no access to sunlight, use a hairdryer by running it on low and not letting heat directly hit the phone. You just want the warm air to flow over top of the phone to pull away moisture. Give it some time to dry then assemble and turn on power.

Finding out you have advanced cancer

When cancer is advanced it means that it can’t be cured and is likely to cause death within a limited period of time. The amount of time is difficult to predict but it could be weeks to several months. Doctors might also say that the illness is terminal. This distressing news can affect you and the people close to you in different ways. This page is about how you may feel and what can help you cope. There is information about

Your first reactions

There is no right or wrong way to react when you are told your cancer is too advanced to cure. Everyone responds in their own way. For most of us of course, this is very shocking news. Even if you thought it may happen, hearing it from your doctor can still be very upsetting.

Some people become silent. They can’t believe what they are hearing and don’t know what to say or do. Some start to cry and feel as though they won’t be able to stop. Others may become very angry and scared. Some people feel numb and as though they have no emotions. These are all very common reactions.

You might find that many questions come into your mind, such as

  • Why me?
  • Do I deserve this?
  • Why can’t you find a treatment to help me?
  • There must be something that will stop this cancer – can’t you just try anything?

It is natural to feel desperate, upset, angry, or that you don’t believe the news. Be sure to give yourself the time and space to take in what is happening. You might want to be on your own. Or you may need to spend time with your partner, family or friends to help you deal with the news. Of course they may also be very upset and feel that they don’t know what to say. Even if all you can do at first is get upset together, that can be a huge help.

If you don’t feel like talking straight away, you don’t have to. Just let the people around you know that. As hard as it can be, try not to push your emotions aside completely. If you can manage it, it is better to express how you feel and allow your emotions to come to the surface – even if that is uncomfortable and hard to cope with.

Feelings you may have

Over the first few days, you may go through a range of very strong emotions. The emotions may change very quickly and sometimes you might feel numb or as though everything is happening to someone else. Some people say they feel very calm and detached when they are first told they don’t have long to live.

At times, you will probably feel shock, anger, and sadness. These emotions can feel overwhelming at times. This news will mean that you can’t plan your future in the way you had hoped. Dying may mean leaving behind a partner, children, and other important people in your life. You may wonder how they will cope and won’t want to see them upset.

These thoughts may be too painful to cope with at times. You might be unable to stop crying and worrying. All this is perfectly normal and understandable.

You may find it difficult to look around and see life going on as normal for most people. It can feel very strange to watch people going about their daily lives as usual – shopping, driving and working. Coping with this roller coaster of feelings can be very exhausting. You may feel as if you are stuck under a huge black cloud and that there is no point in doing anything.

Most people will have some or all of these emotions. This usually changes gradually. Many people say that the intensity and distress lessens in time. This doesn’t mean that you stop worrying or feeling upset. But the feelings get more bearable. You will most likely be able to think about your situation a little more calmly and plan what you want to do.

Looking at your options

It can be helpful to find out what support is available. Some people want to make plans about what they would like to do before they die. You may like to ask your doctor about

  • How to control cancer symptoms
  • What is likely to happen
  • Who to talk to about your concerns

Having some idea about what to expect can help you feel less anxious. You might also want to think about where you want to be at the end of your life.

Sharing your feelings

Sharing your fears and sadness with people you love and trust may be a great relief for you.

Many people say that talking about their feelings helps them to cope. It also helps your friends and family to understand more about your situation. In turn, this will help them to help and support you. Other people find sharing their thoughts and emotions too difficult, and would rather keep things to themselves. It is important to do whatever feels best for you.

Don’t let other people pressure you into talking if you don’t feel ready. This is a very personal, emotional time. You can choose how you handle things. If you would like to talk, make sure you choose people you can talk to easily, who will understand how you feel and be able to support you.

If, after some time, you still feel overwhelmed and that you can’t cope, try speaking to someone outside your immediate family and friends.

Our advanced cancer organisations section lists counselling organisations that offer this kind of support. They also have information about coping with grief, terminal illness, and dying with cancer.

If you are by yourself

If you don’t have people nearby to help with practical things, you can ask for help. One of your health care team may be able to arrange volunteers to help out at home, or come to visit you in hospital. Ask your specialist cancer nurse or doctor about this.

If you need help with personal care, such as washing or dressing, social services may be able to help. They can arrange a care package for you.

You might be wary of letting people you don’t know into your life. But most people find that they do need support at some stage from other people or organisations. And the people that you are put in touch with will be understanding and aware of your feelings and need for personal space. They will want to support you in the best possible way they can.

You might find help and support at your religious organisation or through other organisations you are involved with.

Staying hopeful

It is important that people nearing the end of their life, and those close to them, are aware of what is likely to happen. But only if they want to know this. Everyone needs to have some sense of hope for their future. When you are dying, this hope may be that you can visit a place that you love. Or you may hope that you can enjoy being with your family and friends for a time. Some people believe that there is life after death and find that this gives them hope.

It may help you to share your hopes with other people, so they can help you fulfil them. Many people hope for comfort, dignity, friendship and love to surround them in their final days.

Watford Colour Run is SOLD OUT!

Friday, 13 May 2016

This year over 1,000 people have signed up to Peace Hospice Care’s Watford Colour Run, which is more than double the amount of people that attended the event last year!

The event, which takes place on the 22nd May 2016 at Aldenham Country Park, is now sold out due to the record number of participants.

Vibe 106.7 FM’s very own Ben Day and his family have signed up to the Watford Colour Run. Ben will be participating in the event in memory of his father who was in the Hospice’s Inpatient Unit in 2007.

Ben said: “Sadly my Dad died from throat cancer and when he needed help, the Hospice were there to provide end of life care in a dignified way and in pleasant surroundings. I cannot thank them enough for the care they provided at an awful time.”

Ben added: “I am proud to be able to represent both the radio station I work with (Vibe 107.6) and Peace Hospice Care.”

Pete Watson, Events and Community Fundraising Manager at Peace Hospice Care said: “We’re happy that Ben could join our Colour Run and we’re delighted to be partnering with Vibe 107.6 FM this year. The Watford Colour Run is guaranteed to be a great day for participants, their families and spectators! Even though the run is sold out, people can still come along and buy packets of powered paint to throw at the runners, so everyone can get involved.”

After the run there will be plenty of other activities to keep everyone entertained. There will be food stalls, live music, rides and lots more; so bring the whole family along! This really is going to be biggest, brightest and most colourful day of the year.

So far Ben has raised 243 to date. If you’d like to sponsor him please visit Ben’s Fundraising Page .
