Volunteer

One of Hospice of Central Pennsylvania’s longest and proudest traditions is our reliance on dedicated, well-trained volunteers. Hundreds of men and women have provided caring, compassionate support for our patients and their families during our more than twenty-five years of operations. Our volunteers play many roles, and their work is invaluable.

Roles of a Hospice Volunteer

  • Hold a hand. Listen
  • Provide much-needed respite for caregivers
  • Offer emotional and spiritual support
  • Run errands. Do light housekeeping
  • Let people know they are not alone

  • Pick up medical supplies and equipment

Characteristics of a Hospice Volunteer

Volunteers are special to us and to the families with whom they work. Yet a good volunteer does not need extraordinary skills. They need only feel a dedication to helping others and a compassion for a dying patient and the family and friends caring for their loved-one.

While there is an age minimum (18 years of age), there is no one who is too old to volunteer. To be comfortable in this role, one must be emotionally stable and mature enough to be able to talk openly about death and loss. We also ask that you have your own transportation and be able to give 4 – 6 hours per week, on average, after training.

In return, volunteers experience satisfaction in serving others and often personal and spiritual growth.

Volunteer Training

Volunteers are an integral member of the patient care team. In order to prepare them for their responsibilities, we offer extensive training. In addition to an orientation to the philosophy of hospice care, we address a wide variety of end-of-life issues such as:

  • Palliative care and symptom management
  • Day-to-day care of the patient
  • Understanding grief and loss
  • Understanding spiritual needs
  • Keeping healthy boundaries as care givers
  • Understanding family dynamics
  • Developing good listening skills

For volunteers who wish to support the work of the agency in ways other than direct care of our patients and their families, we modify our orientation and training to suit those particular goals.

Please call Barbara Hardy for Volunteer Training class details: (717)732-1000.

Volunteer Support

Because our volunteers are valued members of our team, we want to ensure their well-being by offering on-going support during their patient assignments. To this end, our volunteer coordinator and other members of the patient care team are always available to assist volunteers as they work with their assigned patient and family members. We also host periodic in-service training sessions to share experiences from the field and acquaint our team with new information, policies and procedures.

Case Study: True Savings

We were asked to empty a neglected residence piled four-feet deep with trash. The owner had died, reportedly leaving a will written in a foreign language somewhere among the trash, probably on the back of a used postal envelope. We filled 10 dumpsters with garbage, sifting as we went. As impossible as it sounds, we found the will and other important documents on bits of scrap paper. During the process, we cleaned and deodorized the premises. We not only saved this neglected residence from the bulldozer, but also saved an inheritance for his heirs.

Auto Insurance Requirements in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania has no-fault insurance law

A no-fault system is intended to prevent insurance fraud because your insurance company compensates you and your passengers for injuries regardless of who is proved at fault. This limits litigation because there is no need to battle over who is at fault. It also speeds up the payment process. The driver who is at fault in the accident is typically charged a higher at-risk insurance premium. In extraordinary situations, a driver in a no-fault state may seek relief in the courts for certain pain-and-suffering damages (versus medical and wage loss damages). In Pennsylvania, an injured driver can sue for pain and suffering damages if these injuries fall into a certain category – for example, death, disability, or disfigurement. In Pennsylvania, policyholders may choose between no-fault systems or the alternative — chasing the other driver’s insurance company for payment. That choice is made at the time the policy is made or renewed.

Insurance coverage requirements in Pennsylvania

The standards below indicate the minimum insurance coverage in Pennsylvania. Naturally, higher coverage can be acquired for policyholders concerned about liability.

This is the maximum amount per person paid for bodily injury (“BI”) injuries.

This the total amount paid by the policy for all bodily injury to all persons. Therefore if several people are injured, those who file first would receive payment as defined above, and once the total payment was reached, the remaining parties must pursue the policyholder for any sums over these amounts.

This is the total amount paid for property damage (“PD”).

SR-22 is Not Required in Pennsylvania

SR-22 (the “SR” stands for “safety responsibility”) is a document that verifies that someone has automobile insurance. The SR-22 is prepared by an insurance company and then filed (by the insurance company) with the department of motor vehicles (DMV). The SR-22 is not an insurance policy. It is evidence that you have a policy. Pennsylvania does not require an SR-22 for DUI offenses. However if you have an SR-22 filing in another state, and move to Pennsylvania, you must maintain your SR22 in the state where it is required .

What if you’re involved in an accident in a state other than Pennsylvania?

The good news is that most policies will increase to match the minimum requirements of the state in which the accident occurred. The 12 states with no-fault insurance systems require that your insurer pay for your damages (as if you had a no-fault policy).

How are premiums determined?

An insurance company takes many factors into consideration when determining your insurance rates (premiums). Some factors may seem unfair. For example, drivers with higher education or who are married will generally receive better rates than a driver with a similar driving record. Below are the major factors affecting rates

  • Driving record and accidents. Moving violations, DUIs, and accident claims trigger higher rates.
  • Credit score. Bad credit scores trigger higher rates.
  • Miles driven. Drive less, pay less.
  • Occupation. Jobs involving driving or heavy commutes may trigger higher rates.
  • Location. Higher crime rates in your neighborhood or a density of population (cities) will cause rates to rise.
  • Age. Drivers under 25 pay more; drivers between 50 and 65 pay less.
  • Gender and marital status. Women have fewer accidents and pay less than men. A married person is considered more stable and will receive a lower rate than a driver with a similar record.
  • Type of car. The more powerful or expensive, the higher premium because high performance cars attract riskier drivers and expensive cars are more costly to repair.

Ricoh unveils solar array to power New Jersey facility, celebrates environmental sustainability milestones

MALVERN, Pa. April 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Ricoh USA, Inc. today announced the latest in a series of sustainability milestones, including a new solar array that will power its West Caldwell, N.J. office facility. The array, which is set to provide for more than half of the facility’s electrical needs, literally represents the power of Ricoh’s ongoing sustainability efforts. This is the latest example of Ricoh’s environmental consciousness and measurable progress in sustainability efforts.

The solar array project began in March 2014. through collaborative work with EnterSolar. a leading New York City -based provider of solar solutions to commercial enterprises. Now live, the array is expected to generate more than 790,000 Kwh per year, providing more than 50 percent of the facility’s electrical needs. That translates to approximately 1.3 million miles driven by an average passenger vehicle, 555 fewer metric tons of CO2 produced per year and $1.9 million in energy savings over the next 10 years. The array itself is roughly 1.3 times the size of a football field.

“Concern for the environment is in Ricoh’s DNA. It’s core to our corporate identity,” said Donna Venable. Executive Vice President, Human Resources and Deputy General Manager, Shared Services, Ricoh Americas. “Since Ricoh established its Environmental Promotion Group more than 40 years ago, we have worked hard to foster sustainability from the top down and the bottom up. It’s what drove us to undertake this solar array project, it’s what drives our emissions reductions as a global company, and it’s what drives our individual employees to do their part in fostering sustainability through corporate and external programs.”

In fact, the West Caldwell facility itself has a strong sustainability history. The building has achieved ENERGY STAR® certification for three years in a row, and its on-site Biodiversity-Pollinator Garden achieved Conservation Certification from the Wildlife Habitat Council .

In addition to these achievements, Ricoh has recently marked several major environmental sustainability milestones, including:

  • Being named ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for the second year in a row.
  • Committing to using a minimum of 30% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% by 2050, as announced by Ricoh Company Ltd, on April 21, 2017 .
  • Becoming the first Japanese company to join the RE100. a collaborative, global initiative of influential businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity, working to massively increase demand for – and delivery of – renewable energy.
  • Since 2014 :
    • Reducing energy consumption by 6.3 percent.
    • Slashing CO2 emissions by 7 percent.
    • Increasing CO2 reduction contribution by 14.7 percent.
  • Earning the Coalition for Government Procurement’s Green Excellence in Partnership award.
  • Featured in the FTSE4Good Index for 13 years running.

Ricoh’s Long History of Commitment to Achieving Enhanced Sustainability

Ricoh has been a dedicated advocate in support of a more sustainable society for decades, having formalized this position with the establishment of its Environmental Promotion Group in 1976.

Ricoh has strived to achieve balance between Planet (the environment), People (society) and Profit (economic activities). To achieve this, the Ricoh Group plans and pursues actions to reduce the environmental impact on the planet caused by resource extraction, energy use and the release of chemicals. In addition to protecting these valuable natural resources, Ricoh works to foster and preserve biodiversity.

Lancaster Motels

clean, but wonder about safety

We stayed there 3 days last week. The motel was very clean. There was no elevator, but we did not ask about that and it did not bother us. Each morning, the doughnuts ran out, and if you did not ask for more, you don’t get any. You have to take your coffe, doughnuts, etc. outside or to your room to eat – no room in the coffee area which is very small and if there are more than two people in the area you have to wait for them before you can get to the coffee pot, microwave, toaster, etc. I guess our real concern was the fact that other than the front door it would be hard to escape in case of emergency. From the back of the motel, you have to go down some steps like you are going into the celler, and then there is a door at the rear, side. We don’t see how OSHA permits that.

When my Husband and I went to Lancaster for a few days get-away, we ended up at a really bad resort, after getting our money back we called Best Western Eden Resort, and a suite was ready and waiting for us to arrive. This resort is absolutely beautiful. Our 2 room suite was beautifully decorated, and there was even complimentray microwave popcorn and bottled water. The other resort wanted to charge us $2.00 for water. The 2 very large pools were clean and spacious. The landscaping was wonderful, and everyone was very friendly. I would recommend this resort to anyone going to Lancaster, Pa, it’s well worth it.

My family has been going to La.

My family has been going to Lancaster for many years and have always stayed at another resort. Last year my other resort was booked. I found this place and let me tell you it could not have been any nicer. This is now my new resort It is very family friendly ( I have 4 kids) clean and affordable. We get the 2 bedroom suite and it is perfect. Tons of activities for tots, teens and adults. They also have a great food selection on property. I would highly recomend this for family’s. couples, seniors or singles!

Clients Love the Convenience, Speed, and Accuracy of
Internet Proofreading from BusinessProofreading.com

Internet Proofreading Is Convenient

In this “I need it yesterday” world, you’re sure to agree with my clients that Internet proofreading is a blessing. The convenience of being able to simply email a message or attachment and have it returned to you polished and ready to impress is an absolute necessity. With Internet proofreading, all your copyediting can be handled quickly and professionally.

“In the advertising/copywriting business, I always hear from customers who are in a hurry for copyediting. It’s such a blessing to know that BusinessProofreading.com is available to help me out in a pinch. The convenience factor of being able to email or fax a project to Cathy and have it returned in just a short while is a real lifesaver!”

Internet Proofreading Is Fast

I constantly hear my clients’ kind words about quick turnaround. Internet proofreading, in and of itself, speeds up the process. And I always strive to meet your deadlines even if you have a rush job.

“Cathy Kessler has proven time and again to be a valuable asset in enhancing the effectiveness of many of my different types of written communications. I know that when I send something to Cathy for copyediting, not only will it be returned to me in a prompt manner, but also the document will be grammatically correct. Cathy’s helpful insights in the area of business proofreading have enabled me to clearly state what I want the reader to know, while doing it in a very straightforward, professional manner. I would highly recommend Cathy to anyone who understands the value of the well-edited written word.”

Internet Proofreading Is Accurate

Most of my clients rave about the accuracy of Internet proofreading. Because the copyediting is done in digital format, the results are more reliable than marking the changes on paper and then having to make adjustments on your document later. If you’d like to see the changes I’ve made while copyediting, just ask, and I’ll gladly mark them for you.

“It’s really hard to find your own mistakes, especially when you know how text/copy should read. I always run all my projects past Cathy’s meticulous eyes before releasing a project to press or production. On more than one occasion, she has found typos or grammatical errors that would have cost me money and aggravation to reprint, not to mention client dissatisfaction as a result, I’ve never had to reprint a project. I would highly recommend Cathy’s copyediting and proofreading services to anyone who writes or uses text/copy of any kind. She’s the best!!”

    Patient care/family support volunteers:

    • Hold a hand. Listen
    • Provide much-needed respite for caregivers
    • Offer emotional and spiritual support
    • Run errands. Do light housekeeping

    • Answer phones. File records. Help with newsletters
    • Prepare informational packets. Help with medical records
    • Transport clients to appointments and meetings

Find the Right Pennsylvania Auto Insurance Coverage for Your Needs

Feel secure knowing you have an insurance provider you can rely on. With Nationwide, it’s easy to customize your policy with affordable options for Pennsylvania auto insurance .

Pennsylvania car insurance coverage your policy must have

    Liability coverage

As a Pennsylvania driver, there are two types of liability coverage your insurance policy must include: property damage and bodily injury.

    • Bodily injury safeguards your assets if you’re found legally accountable for a covered accident, including certain expenses associated with bodily harm sustained by the other party.
    • Property damage safeguards your assets if you are found legally accountable for a covered accident, including property damage sustained by the other party.

    Limited or full tort coverage

Choose from limited for full tort coverage.

    • Limited Tort limits the right for the insured to seek financial compensation for pain and suffering due to injury in an accident.
    • Full Tort allows the insured to seek financial compensation for pain and suffering due to injury from an auto accident when you are not at-fault.

When you buy Pennsylvania auto insurance coverage, you’ll need at least the required state minimum amount: $15,000/$30,000/$5,000. This means that in the event of an accident, if you are at fault, you are covered up to $15,000 for bodily injury for each person involved in an incident, with a total maximum of $30,000 per incident. It also covers up to $5,000 for damage to another person’s property.

Liability coverage also provides for your legal defense if a suit is brought against you as a result of a covered accident.

    Medical benefits

Pays for necessary medical expenses for you or others covered under the policy, no matter who is at fault.

Pennsylvania auto insurance coverage that’s smart to have

It’s often a good idea to add the following coverages to your policy so you can enjoy the security of being protected on the road:

    Comprehensive

This type of Pennsylvania auto insurance coverage is used to repair your vehicle when physical damage occurs from non-collision related incidents (subject to deductible). Such incidents include theft, fire, vandalism, glass breakage, and contact with animals.

    Collision

Collision coverage is used to repair your vehicle when physical damage occurs from collision with another vehicle or object (subject to deductible).

    Uninsured/underinsured motorist

Protects you in the event of an accident where the other party is at-fault and either doesn’t carry insurance or is underinsured.

    • Bodily injury may protect you if you’re involved in an accident and the other party is at-fault and either is uninsured or doesn’t carry enough insurance to cover costs related to your bodily injury damages.
    • Property damage may protect you if you’re involved in an accident where the other party is at-fault and uninsured/underinsured for damages sustained to your vehicle and other covered property (subject to deductible). You do not need Uninsured/Underinsured property damage coverage if you have collision coverage.

Tailor your policy with these options

    Accident Forgiveness

With this optional coverage, Nationwide will not raise your auto insurance rates following your first at-fault automobile accident. Learn more about Accident Forgiveness .

    Roadside Assistance

Nationwide Roadside Assistance coverage is available in two different levels, Basic and Plus, so you can choose the one that works best with your budget. Get covered for fuel delivery, lockout service, jump-starts and more.

    Loss of use

If you can’t drive your car due to a covered loss, this coverage helps pay for a rental car or other transportation expenses so you can get back on the road.

Insurance terms, definitions and explanations are intended for informational purposes only and do not in any way replace or modify the definitions and information contained in individual insurance contracts, policies or declaration pages, which control coverage determinations. Such terms may vary by state, and exclusions may apply.
