Clare Valley Motel, Clare

Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We have been travelling around Sth Aus with friends. After various types of accommodation this was given top points. The room was excellent, the laundry good. the only downfall there is only one washing machine and one dryer and as we all had heaps of washing we monopolised the laundry when others needed it. Food and presentation was excellent. More

Dear Traveller We appreciate your review and thanks for the ‘top points’. We have only just installed our guest laundry this week – with brand new washer and dryer and newly built laundry room. We have been amazed at the great response. If we find that we continually need another machine, we will then remedy that problem – but glad. More

On seeing this motel I thought it would be out of our price range. Pleasantly surprised. Staff very friendly. Room was so comfortable and spacious. The restaurant has around 10 tables so we needed to book a time. Waitress was fantastic, making everyone feel at home. Chatting to all but not intruding in any way. Our meals were so lovely. More

clarevalleymotel, Owner at Clare Valley Motel, responded to this review

Dear Guest We like to provide our guests with great facilities and great service – all at a reasonable price. I agree, our little motel, does give a great first impression – I hope this doesn’t detract too many potential guests, thinking we are too expensive! More

The motel is well set back from the main highway. It offers comfortable rooms but best surprise of all was the restaurant. We enjoyed a delicious dinner on the Sunday night we were there. Hardly anything else was open and what was were heavily booked for Mothers Day. We also enjoyed a great breakfast the next morning. All the food. More

Paradise Motel

MOLD everywhere. My best friend brought her family here and they all got super sick and went to the ER in marina deal Rey, scared because they were getting headaches and coughing after their 2nd day! Don t do it, how ridiculous to pay so much per night and even after asking them to exchange rooms because her sister in law had a baby and they REFUSED said too bad because it was their third night and why didn t they complain earlier! Seriously what a joke! They then tried to blame her for breaking the toilet! Well I m going to show u pics of the old piece of crap and the mold all over the sink and room!

The entrance. Wow

Stop following Chi W.

Unfortunately, the water took over 5 min to get hot. and it was backing up in the shower. We had to get someone to unclog the shower drain. He came and used a plunger that s used for the toilet. The next day was worse: there was standing dirty water in the shower, backed up and almost overflowing the bathroom. Disgusting.

Was this review ?

Alright, first off, let me say that all I basically want at cheap priced hotels/motels is:

– air conditioning/ refrigerator
– a clean room (bug free), clean sheets, towels, etc.
– working toilet, sink and shower
– working door lock/ no theft from housekeeping
– parking lot
– safe-ish neighborhood

IMO, these should the basics every place should have to obtain repeat customers.

This place failed in the working shower requirement. We only stayed there 2 nights and both times I used the shower I had problems getting hot water. The first time, it took several minutes for the water to warm up and even then it fluctuated on me. The second time, it took FOREVER to get even warm water that I could wash my hair in without risking getting a cold afterwards. I even turned all the cold water off and turned the hot water knob full blast and it was just a tiny bit warm after more than 10 minutes of trying. This was just downright annoying.

The shower drain also took forever to drain the water out so that the next guy using the shower had to wait a while before going in.

They did fine in everything else tho. It had a microwave, fridge, tv with a movie channel and a weird porn channel with the upper left window of the screen showing it, a love seat sofa, AC worked pretty strong and they tidied up our room pretty neatly. Place was pretty darn clean with no bugs in site. Floor is tiled, not carpeted.

So you decide how important the shower is to you, it was REALLY important to me.

Absolute Hotel (Limerick, Ireland): Hotel Reviews, Prices – Photos #hospice #cost

#absolute hotel limerick

This hotel is average but the prices are super . It is much more expensive than the Strand and Savoy but not of the same high standard. Limerick has a great surplus of hotel rooms. So check around. Excellent value can be had for €70+. This place now needs to be upgraded. Worn shabby carpets and disinterested bar staff weaken its appeal. It’s location is not great either in a city where you are conscious of such things and if you cancel in advance they will try and charge you for the privilege. With their present prices it’s one good reason why VAT should not be reduced for hotels. They don’t pass savings to the customer.

DonnachaGM, General Manager at Absolute Hotel, responded to this review

Its really disappointing to get feedback like this. Sorry.
After taking the time to read the review I feel that the writing is very emotive so I can clearly see you are upset.
I’ll take on board any feedback but it is important to ensure that all reviews are fair to all concerned. We take complaints very seriously and I’ve not been able to identify if you spoke to any duty manager at the hotel to highlight your issues and give us a chance to remedy regarding the carpet or staff interactions.
The pricing policy we operate is clear and we feel we give value for money. Sometimes we are slightly more expensive or indeed cheaper than the completion but we price based on demand and availability as always the guest will decide. We have no hidden extras and even have free car parking available. For example as I write this the strand is €25 more expensive and the Savoy is €34 more expensive than us.
Location is of course subjective so point taken there.
The cancellation policy is very clearly communicated and is not there to catch anyone out. If you book an advance purchase rate for example, it is cheaper and a condition is that you can’t cancel it but if you book another rate it is fully cancellable up to 3pm on the day prior to arrival.
Regarding the VAT rate we have greatly benefited from this initiative. It has helped the business to be more viable and to consequently employ more people and invest in our product ie we now have Nespresso machines in all our rooms for example. I suppose to be very clear if VAT goes up, it will be impossible for the hotel to absorb, so we will have to either employ less people or purchase less in the open economy or pass on to the consumer. Neither is something I would be in favour of doing but for certain something would have to happen if the VAT rate changes.
However, that is out of my control and all I can do is to try be a good employer and a good hotelier looking after my guests so they are happy.
We’ve clearly missed with you on this occasion and that makes me sad as a business manager but I have to dust myself off and drive on.

Regards

It was our first visit to Thailand. Decided to stay at Patong Beach Hotel with the assistance of Charlene Govender, a travel consultant from Serendipity Tours South Africa. Well organised company. Hassle free holiday. Stayed for 6 nights in August from the 14th -20th.
Thanks to the staff at Patong Beach Hotel for making our holiday a sweet and memorable one.
You guys are just awesome and sooo friendly.

My husband and I upgraded to the Sunset Wing without any complaints.
It had the most beautiful views of the sea and pool area.
Our room was neat. Loved the king size bed. Very comfortable and cosy.
Enjoyed the breakfast. Good variety.
Breakfast wasn’t a repetition each morning..

On the 15th was my hubby’s birthday.
Thanks to management and staff, they arranged for a cake. They surprised him as we were having dinner. They brought the cake and sang Happy Birthday . He was overwhelmed. Thanks again guys for making it a special 60th birthday..

We have no negative comments about this hotel or staff.
Only good words. Indeed they are pleasant and friendly Thai people. Full of smiles.

Given another chance, we would most certainly return to Patong Beach Hotel.
Everything is within walking distance. Plenty of restaurants and night markets. You get to choose where you would like to dine out.

The atmosphere here is calming, the facility is new, and the decor is tasteful. Around every turn there is something else to be pleasantly surprised by: live plants, a grand piano, a spa, a children s play area, bird feeders, surround sound in the rooms, stars projected onto the ceiling, the resident therapy pup. However, the real stars here are the staff. They cared for my grandma wonderfully during her final days, and the rest of my family as well. We never felt neglected or out of the loop and they went above and beyond to be sure the entire clan was comfortable. Hospice of Dayton is a very good choice for end-of-life and palliative care. As a nurse, I ve been to several other hospices, and this one outshines the others by far. I recommend this facility without reservation.

Example: There are a few times in life when a meal is so expertly crafted and planned that it is nothing short of genius. Last night, I had one of those meals – the Mahi Mahi.

The dish was excellently prepared. Grilled, juicy, and fresh without a hint of fishiness. A glaze of tangerine sauce brought a hint of tart sweetness. The fish was placed on a mound of sweet plantain rice. The combination of the fish and rice alone was to die for!

However, as only expert chefs can achieve, additional garnishes provided even bolder, beautiful tastes. Pickled onions topping the fish made for an even finer taste experience, while green beans hidden under the fish added freshness and completed each bite

History

Established in 1978.

Hospice of Dayton is a genuine Dayton original. Founder Betty Schmoll led the effort to create a new service to address the needs of those with life-limiting illnesses and solicited support from members of the Miami Valley healthcare community, which contributed resources and nursing staff to establish a non-profit, community supported hospice. Schmoll s innovative and inspirational leadership led to the founding of Hospice of Dayton in 1978. Dayton was one of only a handful of cities across the nation to dedicate resources to such an effort.

Open Virtual Tour

In 2006 I shot our very first spherical aerial panorama. from which the AirPano project started, in the beautiful place of the Colorado and the San Juan rivers confluence (USA):

The result was overwhelming by looking at the large screen one had a total illusion of flying over the canyon. And so we decided to continue our experiments.

The next attempt was made in 2007 above the island of Manhattan. I remember this photo shoot by one funny detail: there were no headphones for passengers in the helicopter’s cabin. I had to shout from the back seat (while trying to overcome the engine roar that was coming from the open door) to let the pilot know where to go. He didn’t hear me anyway, so in order to change the shooting position I had to tap on his shoulder and then after he looked at me I had to point the direction with my finger where the thumb down meant moving lower. And guess how I showed him to go higher 🙂 It was fun.

After that incident, when hiring a helicopter I always ask: Do you have passenger headphones in the cabin?
And pilots are always surprised: But of course! Is it possible not to have them?
Yes, it is possible, I answer In New York 🙂

Despite of all the difficulties, this photo shoot was accomplished, delivering world’s first virtual photo tour above Manhattan .

There were many more flights after this one, and many like-minded people joined AirPano project in the process. As of today we shot around 100 spherical panoramas of the most interesting and beautiful places in all the continents of our planet. Except for Antarctica. We also made virtual photo tours over the world’s most beautiful cities.

In 2011 we returned to New York to once again photograph Manhattan: this time making it much better technically and artistically. Enjoy the daytime aerial panoramas of Manhattan now. The evening flight over Manhattan and the large photographic virtual tour will be published in the nearest future.

New York is the most famous city of the USA, and Manhattan is the most famous part of New York. It all started 400 years ago when the most famous and profitable in human history real estate deal was made: the Native Americans sold this ‘not so useful’ piece of land to Europeans for 24 dollars.

Since that time the island has changed dramatically. For 24 dollars one can probably buy a ticket to the Empire State Building.

Present day Manhattan is the most populated island on Earth. The land itself costs about 40 billion US dollars, and the cost of the entire Manhattan, including its real estate, reaches over 3 trillion US dollars.

This remarkable part of New York City is best to be discovered on foot not only because of the infamous New York traffic or cost of parking in New York. There is a joke in New York that only wasteful people can afford driving in New York, because the time one spends on finding a parking spot sometimes equals the time it takes to drive from one side of Manhattan to another.

New York is known to be a financial capital of the world, and the island of Manhattan is where all the banks, offices, largest insurance companies and corporations are located literally one on top of another. Basically the rest of New York, and eventually, the rest of the United States, work for Manhattan, making sure that this gigantic city inside of the city continues its mission processing the wealth of the whole world.

Besides a large number of museums, almost every building in Manhattan has a historical value. Old buildings harmoniously coexist with the best examples of the modern architecture. Most famous New York attractions are located in Manhattan, including Empire State Building mentioned above, Central Park and Times Square. There is also colorful China Town and bright Broadway they are all located on this island. It is a shame not to bring a photo of Manhattan from your trip to New York!

We also made our modest Manhattan photo album. These panoramas were photographed in the summer of 2011.

Stowe Motel Snowdrift

Best 2-star hotel I ve ever stayed in, definitely exceeding my expectations! The room was spotless and the bed super comfy, and the front desk staff just great – they even let us check in 2 hrs early. We didn t have time to scope out the DVD library but that s a really thoughtful perk.

Worst part about the whole place: 3/6 light bulbs in our room were burned out and the blinds didn t do much blocking of the morning sun. All in all though not nearly enough to detract from the overall joy of saving $200 by not staying in the fancier hotel we were considering while still having access to all the same activities in the area 🙂

Yuck. Stayed here 10/14.
First the PROS: grounds are beautiful with lovely pool, tennis court, bicycles, walking paths, lush lawns and trees. Room was clean but old and windows opened to let in fresh air. Fridge in room was nice but it was noisy. Toiletries were fine.
CONS: old, dingy, depressing room. Only 1 useable outlet to charge phones (second outlet in bathroom but who wants to charge a phone in a humid environment?). Ratty, noisy bathroom fan. Very squeaky bathroom door (tough to use at night without waking others). Sheets were clean I think but rough and felt cheap. Icky velour blanket . Bouncy foam pillows. Worst feature? The heat/ac unit is less than 12 from the bed so it blows directly on you – so unpleasant and really loud. Well, maybe what was worse was the shower. If your neighbor flushed their toilet you instantly got scalding hot water. All this for $170/night plus $12 for our 17 year old. We spent as little time as possible in room. Did not eat free breakfast. I realize $170 for a room in Stowe is a bargain, but our room was awful, old, and just horrid . I m not used to the four seasons but this place really needs updating.

This is an older motel, spread out in multiple buildings. It s well maintained. Nice, grounds, west of the downtown area. Pool, breakfast room, free bikes for your use, wifi.

The best thing going though is the staff. They were helpful and friendly and had several suggestions for restaurants and places to see.

Was this review ?

Personally, I love this place! We have stayed here three times during the month of Dec. and once in March. and always paid less than $100 per night. The grounds are spacious and well maintained, there is always parking available, the staff is pleasant and helpful, they have a nice DVD selection and free treats and tea/coffee/hot chocolate in the lobby, there is ping pong and fooseball (I have no idea how to spell that), you can use the snowshoes without charge, and breakfast is ample. It isn t a hot breakfast, mind you, but there is yogurt, oatmeal, an array of cereal, loads of bread options (including gluten free bread), fruit, muffins, bagels, and beverages. The rooms vary widely. We have stayed in a nice suite with a couch and a fireplace, an average sized room, and one more cramped room. All had mini kitchens and were clean. No issues! Although, yes, the heat is loud. I sleep with earplugs so it doesn t bother me, but I can see it being a problem for some. And, finally, it is located 10 minutes from the mountain for skiing and maybe 5 from downtown. There are walkable restaurants nearby too. Good value for the price!

Was this review ?

I love this place. Been going here for 4 years and the staff is always pleasant. The rooms are clean and the beds are as comfortable as a motel bed can be. I find the rooms to be modern and quiet, especially when compared to others in this price class. Recently we had a problem with our room smelling like smoke because of people next door. All the rooms are non-smoking. I politely complained and the staff went out of their way to make sure they got us satisfactory accommodations, even upgrading us. They only seemed concerned that we were happy and checked in on us by calling us and again when we checked out. I really can t say enough about the service here.

Was this review ?

Let s just say it s not fancy; the experience is essentially like being a house guest. The rooms are extremely unpretentious and the layout of the whole place is a little bit inconvenient; several of the blocks of rooms are only accessible by going back out onto the road from the main office and driving in again, which gets a bit irritating since Mountain Road is filled with yuppie families in Subarus that have been blinged out with the latest Vermont bumper stickers and Thule ski racks.

But then there s the good side, and in the case of the Stowe Motel, I think the good outweighs the bad. The staff is just about the nicest bunch of people ever, there is free food in the mornings and an e-mail checking station in the office, and the grounds are lovely with mountain bikes you can borrow and a tennis court. Then there s the kicker: it s CHEAP. Great for a kid on a budget who manages to have a bit more than enough cash for a snowboarding hostel, but who doesn t want to pay the full Stowe price.

Was this review ?

From the outside, it actually doesn t look much, but once you go in, it s like a 4 star hotel. The room we got was very clean, with mostly recently upgraded furniture. The beds were nice and the blankets were very cozy. There s a fridge and a water thermos where you can heat water for coffee but no microwave (so 4 stars instead of 5). They have free breakfast but we didn t have time to sample it. They also have a few amenities like 2 pools, 1 hot tub and a game room (which we also didn t really use). The only disadvantage is, if you re quite sensitive to noise, the a/c can be a bit loud. Love the staff here, very friendly.

El Patio did not contribute one cent!

Chasman86 (184 reviews)

I had a stolen (or misplaced) fanny pack that all of a sudden disappeared. This back pact had the reservation to El Patio in it. It also had Medications for me that are critical to my health. The pack could not be found and consequently I had to cancel the reservation, this was a difficult task for my wife and I because we were looking forward to our trip on the Fast Cat boat to Key West. Just for 3 days. The El Patio canceled my reservation and kept all the money +$315.00. Booking dot com took the original reservation. No sympathy what so ever. The cost of the trip was not insured (my fault). Needless to say I will never use either of these two companies again. What a bummer: no trip+plus not one penny back. Mean time good luck in renting the same room to some on else, which I am sure they can do with out any difficulty.

Beautiful 50 s art deco feel to it. quiet and enjoyable.

brianhR2329JW (41 reviews)

Stayed here 2 years ago and again in July 2016. very quiet and peaceful. hard to describe the feel of it: a mix of art deco, nuclear age, mid century modern. regardless, you just feel at peace. within walking distance of Duval street but without all the craziness. Their wifi was poor, but I didn’t go on vaca to use wifi 🙂
Rooms are clean. Tile floors, small bathrooms. no real amenities, and yet, you feel like it was exactly what the soul needed.

Robert Kardashian Kim, Khloe and Kourtney s Father

Robert Kardashian

Robert Kardashian is the father of Kim, Khloe, Kourtney and Robert Jr. He is most famous for being a lawyer on OJ Simpson’s big murder case in 1995. The trial actually caused a bit of a divide in the family because Nicole Simpson, OJ’s wife, was a good friend of the family. She was murdered and OJ was the prime suspect, so when Robert Kardashian defended him, Kris Jenner and some of the others were very upset. According to Daily Mail a big reason for Kris and Robert’s divorce was her “lavish spending” though Kris has admitted on Keeping Up With the Kardashians that she had an affair with a man named Todd Waterman when she was married to Robert Kardashian. It was this affair that broke up their marriage. While going through the divorce, Kris had stated that there was verbal abuse involved and said that daughter Kim was witness to it, explaining in the divorce petition that: As a result of (Robert) and my irreconcilable differences, there is a tremendous amount of discord at the family residence. On May 3, 1990 Kimberly found me crying after a brutal conversation with (Robert) and she became so upset I had a difficult time getting her to her carpool on time. Kimberly called my office twice that afternoon crying hysterically, begging me to come home. Robert Kardashian was reportedly very angry about the affair and then upset that Kris had moved on with Bruce (now Caitlyn) Jenner.

Robert Kardashian was born to Armenian parents, who ran the largest meat-packing business in southern California. Kardashian grew up to attain a degree in business and later in law. After divorcing Kris Jenner in 1991, he became engaged to Denice Shakarian Halicki, but later married Jan Ashley. This marriage ended in annulment and then he married Ellen Pierson just six weeks prior to his death. On Keeping Up With the Kardashians. we’ve heard Kardashian’s children talk about the bad relationship they had with Pierson and how there was no trust with her. Kardashian died of esophageal cancer at age 59 on September 30, 2003, just two months after being diagnosed with the illness. While some were suspicious as to why Kardashian and Pierson got married so close to his death, Pierson explained to In Touch : I was with Robert for almost five years total. I dated him for three years, and he proposed to me in 2001. We married two months prior to his passing in 2003 and planned a wedding — we didn’t just run right out and get married. In January 2013, Pierson released journals of Robert Kardashian’s that painted an unflattering picture of Kris Jenner. Immediately, the Kardashian brood fired back and called her a lying opportunist. Khloe Kardashian responded with this comment: How can such a piece of trash even mention my father’s name? You married him on his deathbed while he was not even aware of his surroundings. Kim Kardashian stated: This woman he married 4 2 wks before he died needs 2 get a job instead of trying 2 destroy families w fake stories. In response, Pierson told In Touch: I am simply stating the facts and the truth— their father’s truth. I simply delivered hand-written diaries from their father. They are my property at the disposal of whatever I so choose. Robert would have no problem with that. In court documents, Kim Kardashian talked about Pierson’s behavior in her father’s final days, explaining: She changed the locks on the doors when my dad was sick and told us to not come visit our dad, not come see him. We let that go for a few days, then finally we’re like, “That’s our dad, he is dying, we will come over there. Dad, open the door. We know she’s gone. We came back to the house and we got in there and we took a key. And we had to, like, force our way in the house. Pierson’s response was: At the moment Robert took his last breath, none of his children were by his side, opting instead to attend a party at Kourtney’s home.

In an interview with Giuliana Rancic, Kris Jenner opened up about her ex-husband Robert, who she was married to from 1978 until 1991. Kris stated: It was so surreal, the knowledge he had cancer was one thing, but to think it would actually take his life, I never in a million years thought that would happen to him. As for the demise of her marriage, Kris said that she basically wasn’t mature enough to understand the hard work that goes into marriage. Bruce (Caitlyn) Jenner (Kris’ other ex-husband) stated on an episode of KUWTK that when Robert Kardashian was dying, Bruce promised to always take care of his kids. He s not the father of Khloe

So from reading they re nobody special and love money. Trashy immoral fakes. Why people follow anybody in entertainment I don t consider reality TV entertainment. But I only love my children and fee good friends. This mess here is hearsay and what your being told to say and so petty. Money that s all. Money makes people selfish and fake shallow. No real true empathy or compassion. They have no response for life because they along with a lot just buy their feelings. Oh well. God bless em all

Chevrolet Impala

Chevrolet Impala

From the November 2013 Issue of Car and Driver

Psst! Hey, you. Over there in accounting. Yeah, you, in the short-sleeve shirt and tie. There’s a rumor that corporate is going to upgrade the company cars for all the junior execs. If it’s true, put me down for a 2014 Chevrolet Impala LT.

Wait! Before you laugh me out of your office, I mean cubicle, um, area, hear me out. The 2014 Impala is a far cry from that generic, fleet-filling lame duck from the 2013 model year. It’s new in almost every respect, including powertrain, sheetmetal, and interior appointments. Chevy has pinched and pulled the formerly androgynous exterior into a chiseled physique. Squint hard enough and you can make out a familial resemblance to the latest Camaro. Inside, the dash features an adventurous bi-level treatment accented with contrast stitching. A motorized eight-inch MyLink touch screen (standard on the LT and LTZ) rises from the center of the dash, revealing a storage cubby.

A bit porky at 3700 pounds, the LT carries its weight capably if not hurriedly with the standard 196-hp, naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four. (You can step up to the 3.6-liter V-6 in 2LT trim.) Testing reveals a leisurely 8.7-second zero-to-60-mph time and a quarter-mile run in 16.8 seconds. You can do better for a getaway car, but the engine commits early and hangs on tenaciously until an upshift from the six-speed automatic arrives, either automatically or when prompted by a shifter button. The 2.5 is a hard-working four, but, thanks largely to a rubber-isolated front subframe, the coarser aspects of its personality stay out of the passenger compartment.

San Francisco’s top attractions are located within walking distance or a short bus ride from the Marina Motel The Marina Motel is still family-owned and operated today by the original owner’s granddaughter. For the past 70 years the Marina Motel has provided a beautiful and friendly place to stay while visiting San Francisco.

I always search for older motels/hotels that still have architectural charm and haven’t been renovated too much whenever possible. The Marina Motel is a quaint old fashioned motor hotel built in the 30s. The rooms have most of their original charm such as the tiled bathroom and old doors and windows that open. You drive into a courtyard and there are flowers everywhere, even little window boxes. Some units have kitchens. The office staff are friendly and helpful.
The bed was very comfortable and the bedding very soft. The room was clean. We had a microwave and decent sized fridge and coffee maker. I knew from experience that SF is very noisy at night and we like to sleep with the windows open and I meant to bring earplugs. I ended up forgetting them but didn’t need them, it was actually quiet and I slept very well. If you get one of the front rooms that face Lombard I’m sure it is a different story.
If you are one of those who love chain hotels and modern rooms then this is not for you. I like to wake up in a room and be able to tell where I am, which is not possible in chain hotels.

Celebrity Plastic Surgery Disasters?

Plastic surgery doesn’t always turn out the way people want it to – and that’s true for celebrities as well as the rest of us.

Just take a look at these 14 A-listers – and what plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn, who writes the popular Celeb Cosmetic Surgery blog. has to say about each.

Credit: Getty Images

Kenny Rogers

“Kenny Rogers gambled with plastic surgery – and lost!” says Dr. Youn.

“I’m not happy about it,” the country crooner told People magazine in 2006 of a botched eyelid lift. “It drives me crazy.”

With his tight eyelids, he no longer looks like the scruffy, masculine man we knew in the 70’s, says Dr. Youn.

Credit: Getty Images

Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers admits to having had lots of plastic surgery, including a facelift, neck lift, and eyelid surgery – and she makes no apologies. Some might say her “work” has been overdone, but who cares?

“She’s A Piece of Work (in a good way),” Dr. Youn says.

Credit: Getty Images

Donatella Versace

The first thing one notices about Donatella Versace is her overly plump upper lip. Natural lower lips tend to be about 50 percent larger than the upper lip. But in Versace’s case, the proportions are reversed, yielding what Dr. Youn calls a “trout pout.”

In addition, the designer’s skin looks waxy, possibly the result of multiple laser treatments.

Credit: Getty Images

Michael Jackson

A whittled-down nose, lightened skin, an unnatural cleft in the chin, a chin implant, lip augmentation, and God knows what else – Michael Jackson was a classic case of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), Dr. Youn says.

BDD is a psychiatric condition that makes it impossible to see oneself as others do. This unrealistic view causes BDD sufferers to undergo multiple plastic surgeries in a misguided attempt to correct a defect – one that wasn’t there to begin with, according to Dr. Youn.

Credit: Getty Images

Jocelyn Wildenstein

“Jocelyn Wildenstein is a poster child for plastic surgery gone wrong,” says Dr. Young.

The “Lion Woman of New York” reportedly underwent dozens of plastic surgeries – all in a misguided attempt to win back her husband.

Dr. Youn thinks she might have undergone a brow lift, facelift, lip plumping injections, chin augmentation, fat grafting and/or cheek implants, upper and lower eyelid surgery, and canthopexy, a procedure that elevates the eyes to give them a catlike appearance.

Credit: Getty Images

Heidi Montag

What more can be said about Heidi Montag?

“She underwent 10 cosmetic surgeries in one day. and now she looks less like a person and more like a Barbie doll,” says Dr. Youn.

“In my opinion, none of these ten plastic surgeries have benefited her except in giving her more publicity and more reasons to do more surgery,” says Youn.

The reality star admitted to having a mini brow lift, botox in her forehead, a nose job revision, fat injections in her cheeks, a chin reduction, neck liposuction, ears pinned back, second breast augmentation, liposuction on waist, hips and inner thighs, and a buttock augmentation.

“This troubled fame addict needs a shrink, not a plastic surgeon!” says Youn.

Montag herself has since called the surgeries a mistake.

“People have fewer scars from car accidents than I have on my body,” she told Life Style Weekly.

Credit: Getty Images

Jennifer Grey

“Jennifer Grey is a good example of how a nose job (rhinoplasty) can dramatically alter one’s appearance,” says Dr. Youn. “The removal of the bump (dorsal hump) on Grey’s nose made her look very different from the ‘Baby’ character she played in ‘Dirty Dancing.'”

That nose was one of Grey’s defining features (like Julia Roberts’s lips, Cindy Crawford’s mole, and David Letterman’s gapped teeth).

While her altered appearance didn’t stop Grey from winning “Dancing with The Stars,” it might have gotten in the way of movie roles.

“I personally think she looks better since it’s just a tad smaller,” says Dr. Youn. “But the problem is that she doesn’t look like she used to.”

Credit: Getty Images

Mickey Rourke

Mickey Rourke appears to have undergone a facelift and upper eyelid lift, as well as hair transplants, according to Dr. Youn.

A badly done facelift can cost a man his sideburns, and Dr. Youn says this seems to have happened with Rourke.

“The unnatural curve between his ear and cheek and his now-attached earlobe are also telltale signs of a facelift,” he says.

Credit: Getty Images

Carrot Top

These days, “Carrot Top is looking more and more like a muscle-bound cartoon character,” says Dr. Youn.

He seems to have undergone quite a few changes over the years, Dr. Youn says, yielding an excessively arched brow and a smooth face, possibly the result of laser treatments or chemical peels.

“At least it appears he’s left his eyelids alone,” Youn says, “although maybe they’re next.”

Credit: Getty Images

Priscilla Presley

What if Elvis could see Priscilla now? Dr. Youn says he might be “All Shook Up.”

A few years ago, says Dr. Youn, Priscilla Presley revealed that she got silicone injections in her cheeks – by a phony doctor. That may explain her puffy face – but not her face’s waxy look. Dr. Youn says the latter might have been caused by a combination of repeated laser treatments and Botox.

Nissan Altima

Nissan Altima

Swimming against the crossover tide.

2017 Nissan Altima Nissan Altima 2017 3.0 1.0 5.0

No doubt about it—if you think the roads and parking lots are filling up with tall, view-blocking crossovers and SUVs, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. The four-door mid-size sedan, once the dominant form of family transport, has lost favor. Call it a sedan recession.

Nissan wants no part of that for its fifth-generation Altima —even if the sales surge of its own Murano. Pathfinder. and Rogue crossover SUVs is contributing to the sedan slide. The Altima is still the bestselling product in Nissan’s lineup, and so far this year, it’s just ahead of the Honda Accord for second-place sales honors in that segment (the Toyota Camry remains number one).

Energetic Flow

The fifth-gen Altima was all-new in 2013. so this update leaves the sedan’s bones largely untouched. The big change is the move to “Energetic Flow” styling, which consists of a more muscular front fascia, Nissan’s “V-motion” grille (which looks like a grille overhanging another grille), and boomerang-shaped headlights and taillights.

The likely theory being that if crossovers are selling like hotcakes, then adding some Murano visuals to the Altima should spur sales of the sedan. It doesn’t stop there: Energetic Flow design is now found on the newly excited surfaces of the smaller and soberer Sentra and on the more expressive and expansive Maxima.

In the cabin, the 2016 Altima’s refresh centers on expanding available technology, as well as hushing unwanted noise with added sound insulation and an acoustic laminated windshield. The Altima’s already pleasing interior gets a Murano-inspired center stack and console, but otherwise the materials, textures, and colors from the previous model continue. Particularly welcome are the Altima’s well-padded door armrests and form-fitting “zero gravity” front buckets—cloth-covered in our SV test car—that seem to comfortably accommodate a wide spectrum of posteriors.

Rear passengers don’t get the form fitting “Zero Gravity” seats, but ingress and egress into the Altima’s aft quarters is easy at least. Rear-seat headroom and legroom, while not as generous as that in the Volkswagen Passat. are mid-size-sedan appropriate. Six-footers can ride in back without asking the front-seat occupants to scoot their chairs forward. Fold-down rear seatbacks add cargo space for long items, expanding the 15-cubic-foot trunk, which otherwise is average for the segment.

All but the base Altima come with a 5.0-inch touchscreen for infotainment. The system has handy knobs for volume and tuning flanking the screen, plus a few virtual buttons on the display and hard buttons alongside. Even better is the 7.0-inch unit that was in our test car—it comes with the navigation package, which is a $580 option on the mid-level SV and range-topping SL. The larger screen gives easier access to all of the mobile apps available in the NissanConnect system. For those buyers who want the latest in connected tech, the lack of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is a glaring omission, although Apple users can access their phone’s voice recognition through the vehicle, a function called Siri Eyes Free. Still, with a market bursting with 8.0-, 9.0-, and even 12.0-inch screens, the Altima’s seem small.

Last year’s port-injected, 2.5-liter four-cylinder returns with only minor changes, none affecting its performance. New engine mounts and a larger muffler help minimize engine drone, yet despite great-looking standard dual exhausts on all models, there’s no music coming out of them to quicken the pulse. In our testing, the 182-hp 2.5-liter’s 8.2-second zero-to-60-mph dash came up a bit short compared with the Chevrolet Malibu 1.5 LT (8.0), the Honda Accord Sport (7.6), the Mazda 6 i Touring (7.3), and the Toyota Camry SE (8.0). The 2.5’s mission is fuel economy, which improved to an EPA-estimated 27 mpg city and 39 mpg highway for 2016 thanks in part to aerodynamic tweaks and standard grille shutters. For more performance, Nissan still offers the 270-hp 3.5-liter V-6. Over two weeks of being subjected to our admittedly lead-footed editorial-staff evaluation, we averaged 26 mpg.

Xtronically Yours

The Altima’s continuously variable automatic transmission, a key component to the car’s fuel-economy strategy, isn’t the complete downer these slushboxes once were. Nissan got into the CVT game early, and the Altima’s Xtronic CVT employs the third generation of its D-step Shift Logic, which under most circumstances simulates the gearchanges that happen in a traditional automatic transmission (up to seven “ratios”). There are brief moments when there seems to be little correlation between engine speed and throttle position, but much less droning is experienced than with CVTs of yore. Mostly, engine revs are exactly where they need to be to develop the power for any given road load and/or driving situation, with little or no delay. Drop the hammer from rest at a stoplight and the engine builds revs fairly naturally—it doesn’t just go roaring to redline and stay there until you lift. You’ll have to opt for the sportier Altima SR if you want shift paddles to manually row through the simulated gears.

Overall, the Altima is quiet with little or no mechanical sounds or road or wind noise disturbing the peace. Its 36 decibels at idle is especially quiet for the class. But things get a tad grainy when cruising with light throttle around 50 mph as the engine drops to 1200 rpm under light load.

Inside Track

The 2016 refresh also includes new dampers and rear springs, which provide a pleasing-enough ride quality. Body motions are reasonably well controlled, and the Altima’s electrically assisted power steering is nicely weighted. Nissan has retuned the steering this year for quicker response. Despite relatively smallish 215/55R-17 tires on our SV test car, turn-in was crisp, aided in part by the standard pseudo torque-vectoring system that pulses the brake on the inside front wheel in corners to improve steering response. The Altima tracks true on-center with little need for constant corrections, although there could be a better sense of the steering weighting up in corners.

Skidpad grip with the SV’s fuel-economy-optimized tires was a middling 0.81 g—down from the last Altima 2.5 we tested in 2013. The brakes inspired confidence with crisp top-of-the-pedal response, although the 192-foot stopping distance we measured from 70 mph (with some fade) is worse than the performance of its rivals.

Safe Bet

Within the Altima lineup, think of the SV we tested as the sensible-shoes choice. It comes standard with most of the equipment buyers seem to want, such as aluminum wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power driver’s seat with power lumbar adjustment, a touchscreen audio system with SiriusXM satellite radio, a backup camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, and remote engine start. It also includes rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring, advanced safety features that cost extra or are not even available in some competing mid-size sedans. All the better to spot those increasing numbers of crossovers and SUVs, closing in fast.

Highs and Lows

Highs:

Quiet, upscale-looking interior; better-than-average fuel economy; new safety tech; decent value; it s not a crossover.

Lows:

Mid-pack performance, handling, and roominess; no Android Auto or Apple CarPlay; small touchscreen.

Right in the middle of Santa Monica but:

– No air conditioning (the description says it does have it. lie)
– The cleaning lady only remade the bed and put fresh towels on the bed (but only body, no new towel for face) no new cups, no new ice bucket plastic bag, no tidy up (and there were a lot of cleaning ladies around so they could have spent the extra five minutes to put clean plastic cups and a clean plastic bag)

– Very small parking lot.

I couldn’t’believe this movie was serious!

First off I would like to say I am in no way trying to make enemies, I am just expressing my own opinion. When I heard about this movie before they even did casting, I knew they were going to pick some pop singer with not the best acting skills to play Daisy. I WAS RIGHT :)! The thing that upsets me the most, surprisingly wasn’t the plot, or the characters at all, it was simply the horrible accents. Jessica Simpson is from Texas, so why can’t she make a decent southern accent? It sounded too made-up and that alone sets the tone for the way you look at the rest of her skills in this movie. the only cast member that had a good southern accent was Willie Nelson, AND THATS CAUSE ITS REAL! It’s important when you re-make a classic, that you keep the simplest things the same, this film didn’t. My advice to anyone who wants to see this is, don’t waste nearly $10.00 on seeing this movie in theaters, at least wait until it’s on video so you can save some money by renting it.

Огни святого Эльма (1985 )

Storyline

Seven friends – Alec, Billy, Jules, Kevin, Kirby, Leslie and Wendy – are trying to navigate through life and their friendships following college graduation. Alec, who aspires to political life, has just shown his true colors by changing his allegiance from Democrat to Republican, which freaks out girlfriend Leslie, who he wants to marry. Budding architect Leslie, on the other hand, has an independent streak. She believes she has to make a name for herself to find out who she is before she can truly commit to another person in marriage. But Leslie and Alec have decided to live together. Because Leslie refuses to marry Alec, he believes that justifies certain behavior. Kirby, who wants to become a lawyer and who pays for his schooling by working as a waiter at their local hangout called St. Elmo’s Bar, and struggling writer Kevin are currently roommates. They are on opposite extremes of the romance spectrum. Kirby has just reconnected with Dale Biberman, a slightly older woman he knew. Written by Huggo

Trivia

Each of the graduates holds fast to the unconditional acceptance and affection of their group, a safety net beneath them as they step into the adult world. “Our early life is a series of plateaus”, explained writer-director Joel Schumacher. who added, “adulthood is a state that you are constantly defining for yourself as you go along, hoping that an ‘adult’ is what other people will see. In ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ we wanted to dramatize the passion and uncertainty of that time. We also wanted to make a point about self-created drama: When most of us look back on our twenties, we see that a lot of the incredible drama we went through was self-created. I hope that older people will be reminded of what they went through and younger people will see something of themselves and their own lives. Each of the friends faces decisions that will determine his or her future”. See more

Well, you know, it ain t easy being me

Other than his Batman flicks, Schumacher is relatively dependable for delivering something that, at the very least, does the job. Watch A Time To Kill, 8MM, Bad Company, Phone Booth(OK, that one is arguably downright good), or The Number 23(the ones I ve seen of his). Know what I mean? They sorta stay with you somewhat, but you don t find yourself calling them great . This is another addition to that. I ll start by addressing complaints I ve heard about this; it s said to be excessively 80 s, and I basically get what they mean(not growing up in the decade, being 4 years old when it ended, I have no recollection of it), and if that is likely to bother you, then yeah(the man often does not know when to say stop to the designers; I refer you to his short stint at superhero movies. you know, the ones that nearly killed the genre, with the murder weapons being neon and camp), you may wish to steer clear. Another is that these characters, credible and well-written though they are, are spoiled, selfish, superficial, and at times empty-headed, brats. Yes. They are. The film is aware of this(which always makes it considerably easier to tolerate), and it doesn t pretend that those are attractive traits. No, they are not necessarily likable; however, they are relatively interesting to follow. Think Election. And the things they go through are quite easy to recognize. Life after high school, love vs. obsession, relationship issues and dealing with various problems that young people face are dealt with, and it comes across pretty convincing and genuine. It can be funny here and there, when it goes for it, a little of that being black comedy. This is fairly engaging, and there is some tension. There are a few stereotypes in this, such as the presentation of a gay man; meanwhile, when you look at how the straight people in this are, it would have stood out more(as Joel points out in the informative and amusing director s commentary on the DVD; it also comes with theatrical trailers for About Last Night and Mortal Thoughts) if it had been toned down. There s the prostitute and the Jews, as well, I suppose. The acting tends to be spot-on. There is a bit of sexuality(not graphic, only brief nudity) and strong language in this. I recommend this to anyone looking for pictures about the troubles of growing up. 6/10

Really well looked after on the whole, dated yes but plenty of character, would definitely stay on our next trip. We had a suite, very spacious and comfortable, the club room is a must even if you pay the extra, drinking out in Singapore is not cheap, so 6 till 8 every night beer, wine and about 5 premium spirit,s with mixers as much as you like and free food is a bargain. We booked trough happy rooms, got a great deal on the room, hotel location top end of Orchard road, new ar all the shops and Jamie Oliver’s restaurant, which was in fact w e think very reasonable and fantastic food.

Checked in ok, upon arriving in our room found it quite dated and old looking after being advised by the hotel that it was the Newer Wing .
The laminated wood floor was starting to lift in places and the headboard had seen better days.
There was a foul smell coming up from the drains every time water went down the drain which made me gag a couple of time we should have complained but didn’t bother.
Would have expected a much nicer club room for what you pay. Some days we had a turn down service some we didn’t so never got resupplied with items we needed also no water.
Luckily we got that from the club lounge if needed. Celebrated our anniversary and the hotel left us a nice cake and bottle of wine in our room which was very nice.

If we stayed here again would not stay in the Claymore wing as is very dated, I did hear the other wing is much nicer. Pool area was nice and quiet so you could chill out, the gym was good with functioning equipment ( but someday’s had no water in the water cooler)

The staff in the club where absolutely fantastic:
Special mention to Daisy, Elle, Mark, Humairah and any others I may have missed, these staff are an asset to your hotel and should be looked after they would be the main reason we would come back they also let us stay in the club room lounge on the check out day as we had a late flight back to Australia.

The only thing with the club lounge is very limited selection at Breakfast no Muesli just two standard juices Orange and apple and not much variety each day. But is you wanted you could eat enough here without buying any food.

The hotel itself is in a good spot close to everything with a Cold store below, ate most meals at the ION basement food hall and the one under the marriot hotel which both where cheap and great.

I would only stay here again due to the Club room staff as they all where so lovely and if we where upgraded to the other wing as the Claymore wing has seen better days and shouldn’t really be used for club rooms.

The supporting cast is not full of stereo-typicals, and they compliment the show. I am so looking forward to next weeks episode! I have heard a lot of comparisons of Nurse Jackie to Dr Gregory House. I doubt any of these critics watched the show. Being injured dependent on Pain Meds is where the likeness ends. Dr. House is a louse. Nurse Jackie CARES. She has HEART. She FEELS. The show reminds me of the original E/R from way-back-when. The one with Elliot Gould, Jason Alexander baby-face ACE. a young George Clooney. I really enjoyed that show too.

If the show were real, I would trust Nurse Jackie with my life. just not my Pain Medication. Please give this show a real chance watch it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Robin McGraw is an American author, speaker and actress, but best known for being wife of Dr. Phil McGraw . popular author and television talk show host. She was born on December 28, 1953 in Irving, Texas. She spends her time running and working for a non-profit charitable organization with the task of helping disadvantaged families and their children. Robin wrote and published two books – Inside My Heart and What’s Age Got To Do With It? Both of them reached number one on New York Times best-selling book chart.

As an actress she appeared in an episode of soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful. She also made appearances in Dr.Phil, Entertainment Tonight, Christmas in Washington, Larry King Live and many others.

Robin McGraw stated that she has never undergone plastic surgery procedures and that she takes care of her body in a natural way. She says that the most important thing is to stay hydrated and to drink a lots of water. She always uses hydrating hand creme because she is convinced that the hands are the first place you can see a woman aging. She also claims she has found some natural ways to make your face look like you had a facelift. Also, her recipe for aging well includes a proper amount of physical activity, so she takes Pilates lessons.

In spite of all that Robin claims, some critics and fans don t agree. They say they can hardly recognize her recently. Rumors are she has done some brow lift and porcelain veneers procedure to make her teeth look more natural. People also speculate about her regular use of Botox and other fillers, as about having a nose job done.

Do you think Robin McGraw is familiar with plastic surgery?

My son and I stayed here back in March on our way south. While the room wasn’t ready when we arrived (at 4p,m) which was surprising at that time, we were given a welcome drink relaxed by the pool while we waited half an hour for the room to be cleaned. Would stay here again as the rooms were good, and the beds were comfortable and clean. This is the main thing that I look for when I’m travelling. The breakfast was good the restaurant was open early for the morning travellers. I can’t fault the staff whom I found all helpful.

OVER RATED

Upper Coomera, Australia

We had occasion to stay at this motel on Friday 13 Sept. date says it all. We were late to check in and we notified the staff when we booked that we would be late. Even though it is clearly stated on the web site that the reception closes at 10pm we arrived at 9.40 pm and the staff were closing up. I asked why and was told. we often close early. you are lucky you got us . When I booked the room it was described as an executive suite with a 2 person spa bath. Well for the price of $155 it was a rip off. The room was very small with so little room it was difficult to walk past each other. The bath was not a 2 person one at all. Staff was not real helpful and didn’t seem to care too much at all. Overall prices were over the top. $7 for an ordinary sandwich or round as it was described to me I thought was quite excessive. Unallocated parking was most inconvenient as there was 50 meters or so to carry our stuff by comparison to parking by the door of the room. I have read some of the other reviews here and I am sure that the rooms that those people stayed in were different from mine. But as I mentioned before at $155 a night for what we had I can only imagine what they paid. OVER RATED and under performed.

Modern, clean rooms where the beds are seperated by the good sized bathroom so it feels like 2 rooms with each bed having their own tv’s. You receive complimentary drinks on check in which is a small but nice touch and definitely makes the kids happy. They had a $50 discount rate going at the time of visit which was an unexpected, well received surprise. The parking was not a problem for us like a previous reviewer but allocated parking would be good for those busy nights but that would be the only complaint – We didn’t eat at the motel so can’t say about the food but we were recommended over the road and was very happy with our meals. Definitely know where to stay next time we’re in Mackay. It’s definitely worth checking out yourself.

No air conditioner, no air conditioner, no air conditioner. There were loud guests outside at night that were not controlled by staff. I wouldn t have stayed here had I known there were better options. My family and I stayed the night here and the only nice thing is the bathroom. The receptionist seemed overwhelmed and stressed out. It s not her fault there wasn t more help, but her attitude needs a change. I asked for a crib for my son and she basically told me she wouldn t recommend them. So we spent a majority of the night struggling with our son on the bed. Anyway, the room is crammed, the carpet is musty and dirty, and the furniture is dusty. My son ran around the carpet for about 30min and the bottom of his feet were BLACK.

But the bathroom is nice. Looks fancier than some boutique hotels I ve stayed at.

Booked it for having reasonable rates, indoor pool/spa, and was not disappointed.
The room seems recently remodeled, minus bathroom, which was fine by us. Spacious mini fridge with a freezer (so your ice cream doesn t melt!).
There is a deck overlooking the ocean, looks like smoking is allowed, since I saw an ashtray.
The spacious green courtyard wasn t much of a draw for me, but I imagine would ve handy if you are traveling with pets.
There s not much more to it, people are friendly and it s very convenient if you are planning to visit Hearst Castle or check out elephant seals, only a few miles up the road.
Overall, very decent property and a good value.

Chevrolet Equinox

Chevrolet Equinox

A quiet, practical cabin makes the Equinox a smart buy, but a well-tuned chassis makes it a desirable one. Three turbo fours are offered; the 170-hp 1.5-liter and the 137-hp 1.6-liter diesel come with a six-speed automatic, and the gutsy 252-hp 2.0-liter has a nine-speed. A 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard; an 8.0-inch screen is optional. Active safety features, such as automated emergency braking and lane-keeping assist, are also available. Jump to First Drive Review 2018 Chevrolet Equinox

2018 Chevrolet Equinox

GM finally gets the small crossover right.

2018 Chevrolet Equinox Chevrolet Equinox 2018 3.5 1.0 5.0

General Motors has been building small crossovers for more than a decade now, and it has sold more than 2 million Chevrolet Equinoxes since the model was first introduced for 2005. But despite all that apparent success, the Equinox has always been a bit too big, a bit too thirsty, and a bit too cheaply made to truly penetrate the heart of the market, where the bestselling Honda CR-V. Toyota RAV4. Nissan Rogue. and Ford Escape reside.

With the all-new, third-generation Equinox, GM finally seems to have figured out what matters in this contentious segment. Fully modern and right-size rather than oversize, this redesigned 2018 Equinox strikes us as the first Chevy crossover that could truly make inroads against the segment leaders.

Honey, I Shrunk the Equinox

It starts with the new Equinox’s smaller and lighter body. Compared with its predecessor, the 2018 model’s wheelbase is 5.2 inches shorter, its length shrinks by 4.7 inches, and its curb weight is reduced by a claimed 400 pounds. Whereas the outgoing, second-generation Equinox shared much of its underpinnings with the original model dating all the way back to 2005, this one truly is capital-N new throughout, with significantly higher torsional rigidity than before.

Indeed, the new Equinox soaks up bumps with nary a quiver through the cabin. There’s remarkably little body roll and the ride is expertly damped, with well-controlled wheel motions and no sensation of body float. Road and wind noise are impressively hushed, something that two of our favorite small crossovers, the CR-V and the Mazda CX-5. struggle with. Combine the Equinox’s overall sense of solidity with its nicely weighted, accurate steering and firm, progressive brake pedal, and it adds up to impressive dynamic capabilities.

Needs More Oomph

With such solid and composed handling, it’s a shame that the standard powertrain isn’t more eager. The turbo 1.5-liter inline-four produces a decent amount of low-end torque, but the lazy six-speed automatic doesn’t make the most of the output. The transmission is keen to shift into higher gears, presumably to benefit fuel economy on the EPA test cycle, which would be more tolerable if the downshifts weren’t so sluggish when more power is requested. The little four-cylinder also seems buzzier and less refined than it is in the Malibu sedan. likely because it’s working harder to move this heavier crossover. Manual shifting capability is possible in the transmission’s L setting but can be operated only by an awkwardly placed toggle switch atop the gear lever (paddle shifters aren’t available).

Luckily, a more powerful, optional turbocharged 2.0-liter paired with a newer nine-speed automatic transmission arrives in a few months, and it should mitigate these concerns. A 1.6-liter diesel four-cylinder also joins the menu later this year, promising an impressive 40 mpg on the highway.

The 1.5-liter’s fuel-economy numbers (28 mpg combined for front-drive models and 26 mpg with all-wheel drive) are above average for the class, although its EPA ratings fall a few mpg short of the CR-V’s optional 1.5-liter turbo. Engine stop-start, a fuel-saving feature found in few competitors, is standard on the Equinox, and it’s among the smoothest and least obtrusive of these systems we’ve sampled—a good thing, considering the only way to turn it off is to move the shifter to the L position.

Sea of Sameness

Compact crossovers aren’t known for design flourish, and the Equinox’s relatively nondescript exterior doesn’t move the needle. We like its overall proportions, but competitors such as the Mazda CX-5 and the Hyundai Tucson look more athletic and appealing to our eyes.

The interior similarly places function over form. It’ll look familiar to anyone who’s been in the most recent Chevrolet Malibu or Cruze, and it’s useful and well organized, if a little staid. The topmost Premier trim level uses a nice mix of leather and soft-touch plastics, although cheaper materials creep in as you move down the price ladder into the less expensive LT model (L and LS trims are available, but Chevrolet didn’t have any of those price leaders available for us to drive). Two versions of Chevrolet’s intuitive MyLink infotainment system are offered—a relatively basic, 7.0-inch touchscreen and an optional, more attractive 8.0-inch screen—but all models include the welcome standard feature of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.

Smarter packaging ensures that rear-seat and cargo space are mostly undiminished despite the vehicle’s smaller size. The rear seat is well shaped, provides plenty of room, and can recline slightly, although we do miss the previous model’s useful sliding rear bench. A removable false cargo floor and articulating seat-bottom cushions create a flush, uninterrupted cargo floor with the 60/40-split rear seatbacks folded. The now-smaller Equinox does give up some space and overall usefulness to the CR-V, which got larger in its recent redesign and is more capacious overall.

Too Much Coin

The Equinox hits a snag when you examine its pricing. Yes, Chevrolet offers a bargain-basement, front-drive-only L trim for just under $25,000, which lines up with the base prices of key competitors. But to get any active-safety systems, or even relatively common must-have features such as automatic climate control and heated seats, you have to shell out for the LT model and add a pricey option package, pushing the cost toward $30,000—and beyond if you opt for the $1750 all-wheel-drive option. Some of the Premier models we drove exceeded $35,000, and the diesel and 2.0T versions will be more expensive still. Perhaps most important, equivalently equipped CR-Vs and CX-5s are thousands less, so unless Chevrolet is planning to offer heavy incentives from the get-go, the Equinox’s value equation looks weak.

Given the less-than-stellar previous Equinox models, Chevrolet will face an uphill battle convincing Toyota, Honda, and Ford faithful to join the bow-tie fold, especially if they have to pay more for the Chevy. But the new Equinox represents such a big step forward relative to its predecessors that it’s certainly worth those buyers giving it a look.

We had a wedding in Santa Ynez June 2016 and we blocked out the entire motel for our guests. It was INCREDIBLE and such a big part of the weekend for us.

We had Muni Wines stay open a few hours late for us and had a welcome party at the bar and around the fire pit. The wine was great and the atmosphere felt made for it. In the morning, everyone got up and was able to hang out on the grass and pick up some wine/beer/lunch right across or down the street. After the wedding when we all returned, a group of us stayed up late around the fire pit chatting and the rooms are set back enough that not a single person complained about noise!

The beds are comfortable, EVERY room is renovated and looks/feels impeccable.

Would recommend Alamo Motel and use a thousand times over. An overwhelming number of our guests reiterated the same to us after the weekend. We plan to travel to Ojai just to stay at Shelter s Ojai Rancho Inn 🙂

It will ruin you for life AND it will make it even more difficult for me to get a last minute room reservation when I ve been bad at the tasting rooms in town.

It sucks that that I ve recommended this funky hide-out to so many of my friends that it s no longer my secret place. Yeah it s been under renovation for a little longer than it should and the old rooms leave a little to be desired but what the hell, I m camp-fire-smokey, buzzed and happy to be rolling distance from a few of my favorite drinking spots. No, I m not a hipster but I love the obscurity of it all.

Jon Paul Jones, screw you for making me like this place so much!

The original Alamo Motel apparently was built in the 1930s or 1940s. The motel looks like hundreds of other roadside dumps from that era. You still see them all across the country on less used back roads. Sadly, even though the motel now is in the midst of being remodeled room by room, it is remains quite deficient. Probably the only real solution to the motel s problems would be to tear it down and completely rebuild it. In short: Avoid this place!

The remodeled rooms are poorly furnished. We had bare plywood floor boards (not even varnished!) and only a thin curtain covering the window. At least by contemporary standards, the bathroom was small and inadequate. The fixtures seemed to be from another era. The room itself was small, in fact so small that there was insufficient room for the motel s own furniture. There was a table built out of unvarnished plywood boards that looked like a reject from a high school carpentry shop. There was no place to put our luggage.

However the worst part is that the motel is built around a U shaped courtyard with all of the rooms facing the courtyard. People were in the courtyard partying until late at night even though most of the guests wanted to sleep.

For the room price that we paid, we could and should have gotten a real hotel room a few miles south in Santa Ynez. So should you.

Postscript 9/8/2015: Curiously elsewhere in these comments you can find a laudatory review and photos by one of the revelers mentioned above. While I do not want to be a spoil sport, imagine at 100 am trying to sleep 25 feet from a group singing to someone s guitar playing. If you do, you will understand my distress.

Los Alamos is a great stop for us with fantastic food and wines. Alamo Motel provides the very basic motel stay at a great price with a homemade appeal, I consider it my go to place to stay and really enjoy the updated rooms. The center fountain area with Municipal Wines is a great addition to the experience and I found myself in the last visit sitting well into the evening just staring at the surroundings with a great bottle of wine and some leftover snacks I had from our long distance drive down the coast.

I am a huge fan of the work that the Shelter Social Club is doing across their properties.

The Alamo Motel is well situated in the center of Los Alamos. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are all within a 2-5 minute walking distance as well as a couple tasting rooms the on site Muni wines.

Incredibly quiet, nice refurbishment and super friendly staff. I am only taking one star off, as it seems like the bathrooms are original? I cannot say it was the cleanest of all bathrooms I have seen, but honestly, not a big deal.

Fan! Love los Alamos and walking about town from the hotel. Muni wine (a previous fave) has a tasting room there! Fire pit, water feature and cool updates rooms. Had the claw bathtub- perfection. I took morning and night baths because I could.
