‘How to choose a financial planner’

Working with Tim Claire provides us with a great deal of comfort and peace of mind and we’re happy to recommend them to our family and friends.

When I saw Claire Mackay interviewed on the ABC 7.30 program one night, I felt that she was someone I could work with.

I also like Claire s ethics and the way Quantum Financial charge their clients.

I definitely rate Claire as a person, her services and her willingness to support and listen to me, whether it is finance related or not, at a 10 out of 10.

On a professional level, Claire’s got a great deal of credentials. She’s an accountant, a financial planner and has a law degree too.

They are here for us, willing and ready to listen and help.

They’re not the cheapest financial planners by any means, but I’m happy to pay a fee that is fair and transparent.

Above all, they provide me with sound financial advice, are very professional, knowledgeable and good communicators.

My wife Sue stumbled upon you from a report by Alan Kohler who mentioned this young pair who were out to reform the financial world.

Level of communication and transparency is nothing short of outstanding.

Enterprise Resource Planning Software Leaders by Market Segment

For an additional market segmentation perceptive, the below summary points illustrate how the Top 5 ERP systems best line up with the small business, middle and enterprise customer market segments.

Epicor offers strong ERP software functionality along with several impressive Industry solutions for Professional Services Automation (PSA), financial services, hospitality management, retail, distribution, manufacturing, pharma and not for profit. In a late 2007 analyst release report, Epicor was recognized by Aberdeen as achieving the lowest TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) and total per user cost of software, services and maintenance for mid-size companies. In fact, the Epicor ERP solution came in at less than 50% of competing ERP products. We find the company’s channel strategy questionable which may necessitate more review for international buyers.

Infor is the mega company that surprising few ERP software buyers are aware of. Largely based on an aggressive acquisition and roll-up strategy, Infor is the third largest ERP manufacturer – behind only SAP and Oracle. Infor is a vertically oriented software publisher with several different ERP software systems and particularly strong distribution, supply chain management (SCM), lean manufacturing, complex manufacturing and process manufacturing solutions.

SAP is the largest and most recognized Fortune 1000, Global 5000 and enterprise market share leader. The company has achieved its success due to its extremely deep accounting and distribution software suites along with tightly integrated financials, manufacturing, human resource, payroll and customer relationship management software systems. While the company claims that its retains significant middle market share, its definition of ‘middle market’ is more in lines with other definition of the enterprise market.

Oracle is the world’s second largest business applications maker – and is clearly out to take the lead role from SAP. Bolstered by its acquisitions of PeopleSoft (with JD Edwards) and Siebel Systems, Oracle has collected an impressive customer list and portfolio of intellectual property. Now the real work to keep those customers and integrate those products (project Fusion) is underway with results expected very soon. Expect several more acquisition and integration project announcements from Oracle over the coming months.

The ERP Evolution Continues

The ERP systems evolution is taking an unusual turn. For those that may remember, ERP applications were originally introduced as mainframe and host-based monolithic applications in the 1970’s and 1980’s. McCormack and Dodge and MSA (Management Sciences America) were fierce competitors and between them owned the lions share of the ERP software market. The two rivals ultimately merged to become Dun Bradstreet Software. Following the merger of the number one and number two market share leaders, Dun Bradstreet Software believed itself to be an unstoppable ERP application titan, however, was soon thereafter completely replaced by the introduction of client/server applications and later sold to Geac for a marginal fee valued largely on existing customer software maintenance contracts.

Starting in November 1992, the client/server ERP applications began appearing from no-name or lesser name software manufacturers such as Platinum Software, PeopleSoft, Oracle Financials, Baan and SAP. These distributed software and GUI interfaced applications grew at the expense of the mainframe ERP systems. Midrange systems such as the AS/400 continued to survive, however, their growth days were clearly over. The most notable of the client/server ERP players – SAP and Oracle Financials – stand alone as today’s ERP application market share leaders. However, now they too are threatened by new technology paradigms from software as a service (SaaS) competitors and open source software.

At the turn of the century, SaaS ERP systems were introduced as a new pricing and systems management alternative to client/server systems. While originally weak in software depth and scalability, leading ERP systems such as Aplicor, Intacct and NetSuite have evolved to deliver functionally equivalent ERP applications, however, with the advertised advantages of the SaaS delivery model (e.g. subscription pricing, hosted delivery, fewer internal IT resources, etc.). These leading SaaS ERP applications are clearly replacing the middle market client/server ERP systems (most notably the Microsoft ERP products of Great Plains, Solomon, Navision and Axapta) in many situations, however, are not yet mature enough to take on the industry giants Oracle or SAP.

Open Source ERP has yet to prove itself as a replacement to commercial ERP applications. While open source ERP applications are clearly growing, they are more often than not used to create first time business systems for young companies or replace antiquated custom built ERP applications with new custom built ERP applications this time built on open source technology.

While Microsoft, Oracle and SAP would be wise to reference the then seemingly unstoppable power of their Dun Bradstreet Software predecessor, they appear to instead exhibit a similar behavior to Dun Bradstreet. All three have scoffed at the SaaS delivery model and mocked the open source initiative. While they are now finally showing some interest, that interests appears to belittle more than dipping their toe in the water and their strategies appear to be more of a defensive tactic designed to slow down the market share loss of their customer base to these new ERP models. We suspect there will be a turning point where protection of their self interests will prove futile and these industry heavyweights will embrace at least the SaaS model and possibly show some substantive interests in the open source model.

Treetops Hospice – Disaster Recovery Planning

Posted on: 19th May 2015

“Pyranet have taken the time to understand Treetops’ values and needs as a charity and company, and where the most critical points of our IT requirements are. Protecting patient information is our utmost priority and I have confidence and trust in Pyranet’s services to ensure this. Their service has been highly responsive, and they have taken the time to become familiar with the third party software that we use.”
About Treetops Hospice

Treetops Hospice provides respite and palliative care for adults with illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease and multiple sclerosis. It also provides help and support to their carers and families.

As one of Nottinghamshire’s leading charities, Treetops have multiple local charity shops, a newly developed dedicated bereavement centre and provide the ability for their nurses to deliver their services to patients at home.

The challenge

As companies become more and more aware of the dangers of online threats and the importance of protecting data from the unpredictable nature of disasters, ensuring that your IT investment and company data is protected by a thorough disaster recovery plan is paramount. As with many businesses, Treetops have increased their reliance on an IT infrastructure drastically over the last 5 years. They are one of millions of organisations that rely heavily on the day to day working of their computers and any disruption to this would be catastrophic to the organisation and its ability to function correctly.

Recognising this, Treetops and Pyranet collaborated on a project to enhance Treetops’ existing disaster recovery plan and ensure that in the event of a fire, flood, theft, hardware failure or any other disruption the systems are restored quickly and efficiently keeping downtime to an absolute minimum.

The approach

By establishing where the existing disaster recovery plan performed well, we were able to look at areas that needed development. We carried out a full disaster recovery diagnosis and this gave us the foundation to build a solid structure that ensured continuity and protection for both the hardware and software that the company relies heavily on.

We began by incorporating a high available server solution meaning that in the event of a failure of one of the physical servers, the second server took over and carried out the main rolls. This helped with the hardware failure aspect and reduced reliance on a single physical server. Alongside this, other hardware elements have been given resiliency including the router, switches and the broadband line itself removing all major single points of failure.

To ensure the data backup is stored safely and has the ability to be used effectively, our best practice is to ensure that backups are done on a continuous basis (not just once a night) and stored to an offsite location should an entire site disaster occur. By utilising a second site, we are able to ensure that the reliance on an individual person changing a backup disk or drive is entirely removed along with the perels of this such as forgetting to swap the backup media and the data can still be obtained quickly and reliably. It also means that the data we would restore from is as up to date as the data on the server right before the disaster, not hours or even days old.

The outcome

Thankfully, we haven’t had to utilise the backup facility as a whole yet however it is tested on a regular basis as part of the service provided by Pyranet to Treetops Hospice. Treetops are confident that in the event of a disaster their data is not only safe but also available to restore from straight away.

Los Angeles, California Area Travel Information

Los Angeles is a place where people can mingle with movie stars, and shop where celebrities shop. Los Angeles is also a great place to take the family vacation as many amusement parks are just a short drive away. Los Angeles is one of the must-see destinations that offers something for travelers of any age as it features year round activities and attractions. Universal Studios Hollywood is one of the most popular Los Angeles attractions and the closest theme park to the Los Angeles area. Not only is it an amusement park but Universal Studios Hollywood is also a working movie and television studio. To get a taste of the magic of movie-making, visitors should take part in the Studio Tour which gives participants a close look at how movies are made, and Jaws might even pay you a visit as well. After a long day of enjoying all that LA has to offer, be sure to relax at one of our Los Angeles Hotels.

The theme park portion of Universal Studios has some unique attractions not found at most other parks. For instance, there is a stunt show, 3D show as well as a 4D show. One of the more popular attractions at the park is Jurassic Park The Ride. Those brave enough to ride will encounter many dinosaurs and creatures from the films. Revenge of the Mummy is one of Universal Studios newest and thrilling rides.

When finished taking the studio tour and riding the attractions, visitors should definitely check out Universal CityWalk which is just outside the park. The CityWalk has many shops, restaurants and movie theatres and it is extremely popular at night. In addition, Disneyland is only about a 45 minute drive from Los Angeles as is Knotts Berry Farm.

After touring the world of movies at Universal Studios or exploring a great theme park, why not visit the place where stars are made? Situated northwest of Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood is home to the most famous movie theatre in the world, the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. This theater opened in 1927, and millions of movie patrons and visitors have been drawn to the theatre. Movie premieres and Hollywood parties are still held at the legendary venue. The theater is filled with exotic art from China and features a jade-green bronze roof that rises 90 feet into the air. Spectacularly lit at night, the theatre is a true Hollywood landmark.

Once visitors have finished mingling with the stars they can shop for clothes at the same stores just a short drive away in the Beverly Hills area. Beverly Hills is a famous section of the Los Angeles area and has been immortalized in the movies and in television. Beverly Hills is home to the most recognized zip code in the world (90210) as well as some of the most expensive stores. Located closer to Cuba than to Miami, Key West is Florida’s irreverent southernmost subtropical paradise, a unique confluence of history, climate, natural beauty, cultural diversity, architecture and unabashed romantic appeal.

Palm-lined streets with gingerbread mansions and tin-roofed conch houses were home to Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Frost and Jimmy Buffett, a few of the famous people who discovered solace and inspiration in the island city whose Bahamian and Cuban heritage in large part was inspired by Bahamian wreckers, commercial fishermen, spongers and Cuban cigar makers.

Palliative Care Tools Resources

This page is a curated source of custom tools and resources about the benefits of palliative care. The resources on this page were created primarily for an audience of healthcare professionals, but are open to anyone.

New!

“Making the case” is a chore that many clinical and administrative leaders need to undertake if they want to create, sustain or expand a palliative care service.

Stakeholders who would be expected to support or refer to a palliative care service need to 1.) understand deficits or improvement opportunities in existing care processes, 2.) how a palliative care service could help with those issues, and 3.) the probability that a palliative care service would be feasible and sustainable from a fiscal perspective.

Gathering evidence and information to address all three of those topics can be time consuming. These 20 references will help you make the case for palliative care.

Florida Civil Statute of Limitations Laws

You got rear-ended on the Turnpike a couple of months ago and your neck still doesn’t feel right. Or maybe it’s a year after the accident and you’re just now realizing that the repair shop didn’t fix your car right the first time around. Can you sue the other driver or the repair shop for damages? And, if so, is there a deadline for filing either lawsuit? Every state has their own laws limiting the amount of time between when an injury occurs and when you can file a civil suit. Here is a brief summary of civil statute of limitation laws in Florida .

Civil Statutes of Limitation

In every state, there are time limits for the filing of lawsuits and other civil actions called statutes of limitations. Florida’s civil statute of limitations laws are largely in line with those of other states. Depending on the type of case or procedure, Florida’s statutes of limitations range from two to four years. The point at which the clock starts ticking typically is the date of the incident or discovery of a wrong.

Data Infographics

This data visualization from the California HealthCare Foundation illustrates the estimated need for palliative care in the last year of life in each California county, the number of palliative care programs, the volume of patients they serve, and the sufficiency of current supply.

    Inpatient Hospice Care

While most hospice care is provided at home, in a home for the dying or comfort care home, or in a nursing home, hospice care may also be provided in an inpatient setting. Inpatient hospice care can be provided in either a designated unit called a hospice unit or in a scatter bed at a hospital. Hospice inpatient care is available for individuals needing help in controlling pain, their symptoms or for those whose family is exhausted or in crisis and needing respite. It is usually used for the last two weeks of a person s life. Inpatient hospice care is also appropriate for persons already admitted to a hospital who are actively dying. Inpatient Hospice care always depends on bed availability. Hospice will search for an available bed, call you back, and arrange for transportation if necessary. The Hospice staff tries to arrange for care in the site of your choice, but sometimes beds are scarce or not available.

The Lifetime Care Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center

    • Locally, this is the first 11-bed free-standing hospice facility in Rochester. The Lifetime Care Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center creates the sense of welcoming and individual care that people need at the end of life.
    • The LIfetime Care Hildebrant Hospice Care Center is located at 2652 Ridegeway Avenue, so close to Unity Hospital, it will ease the transition from acute care to hospice care for patients, families and their physicians – reducing a major barrier to hospice care.
    • For further information please view or call (585) 214-1000.

    The Palliative Center for Caring

The Palliative Center for Caring offer patients and their families needed expert care and services in a place that is warm, comforting and peaceful. The first of its kind in Rochester – one located in a skilled nursing facility – the Center meets a vital community need by providing end-of-life services to address pain, symptom and crisis managment for patients who would otherwise require hospitalization. Additionally, the specially trained staff works to address individual psychosocial and spiritual issues with patients and family members.

  • Located on a private floor in The Heritage on St. Ann’s Irondequoit campus, this five-bed impatient unity welcomes individuals coming from their homes or the hospital; a sixth room functions as a living/lounge area for families and visitors. The Center provides a full range of physical, emotional and spiritual support from highly trained VNS and St. Ann’s Community medical personnel, therapists, social workers and pastoral care staff, along with pharmacy services. If desired, caregivers may receive a respite from volunteers or staff, accessing a private lounge, common areas throughout the campus, including the lobby filled with greenery, cafe, library with internet access, St. Ann’s Chapel and peaceful walking paths.
  • The Center serves as a model for future patnerships with the intent of strengthening and expanding hospice care in our community. The Center is located at 1450 Portland Ave. Rochester, New York 14621. To make a referral, please call (585) 787-8315.
