5 quick fixes that help when Outlook is slow

We all know that working with Outlook each day can become frustrating quite quickly. Sometimes it decides to slow down, hang or stop responding for a time, other times it crashes and takes your whole system with it… in most people’s minds Outlook and “slow” have become notoriously associated with each other. What most forget, though, is that situations like these can be easily remedied by performing some simple things like:

1.Update to the latest version of Outlook.

I remember that about a year ago, Microsoft launched an update that caused many users to pull out their hair in frustration. Outlook was ridiculously slow and everything took up to 5 times as much to do (especially browsing folders) The Outlook team very quickly launched a fix for this, but even 3 months afterwards we received emails regarding issues caused by that buggy patch there were lots of users who simply didn’t install the latest updates. So, if you’re on Outlook 2003 or 2007 just go to the Help menu, then click on Check for Updates and follow the steps displayed; if you’re on 2010 you can achieve the same thing with the Windows Update entry in your Control Panel.

If you’ve installed the latest updates and Outlook is still slow then you can just perform a Detect Repair procedure. This basically scans for and repairs any issues that may have arisen since you first installed it. It doesn’t erase any files, rules or accounts, so it’s a quick and safe procedure one that you can perform even if not on an Admin account (note though, that it’s quite slow, so be sure you won’t have need of Outlook for about an hour). To do this, Outlook 2003 and 2007 have the option in the same Help menu, accessible from the main window. For 2010, go to your Control Panel – Programs and Features – in the newly-opened window, right click MS Office 2010 – choose the Change function (notthe Uninstall one ) – click Repair, then follow the steps displayed. If Outlook is still slow afterwards, you can also try reinstalling it (that is, if you have the original CD those on corporate networks should consult their Administrator).

3.Run the trusty Inbox Repair Tool (ScanPST).

One thing that I’ve never understood is why a useful little program such as this doesn’t get its own shortcut in the Office folder from the Start menu, but rather you have to know about it in order to use it. I’m sure that at least once you have encountered a corrupt file on your hard-drive – be it a photo or a document. The same thing can happen with one of your emails, especially since your PST file is basically an archive that holds thousands of different files (one for each email). If just one of those files gets corrupted, it will slow down Outlook and all its operations. What ScanPST does is go through each byte of your PST and checks if “they fit together”. Once it detects a problem it either fixes it or puts the file away (if it can’t be fixed) so that it doesn’t slow down Outlook anymore. I recommend using it every 3 months, since even if Outlook isn’t slow errors may still be present. So, either go to the link above to see where you can find it or click here to run it straight away, from Microsoft’s servers.

Usually, we install a program and expect it to perform as new for however long we will use it. This isn’t the case with Outlook, its complexity being its eventual downfall. With this in mind, from time to time you will have to perform the instructions detailed above, but if you want to squeeze every bit of performance and speed from it you will also have to remember these steps:

a) Download full IMAP items. If you are working under an IMAP account (Gmail for example), then make sure that it behaves just like POP meaning, it downloads whole emails and not only their headers. If not, every time you click on a new item Outlook will slow down. To find out how to do this, just go here for Outlook 2003 or here for 2007 ; by default, Outlook 2010 downloads IMAP items in full. Even easier, just press Ctrl+Alt+S and then Edit your IMAP account.

b) Disable add-ins that you no longer use. This is self-explanatory, actually – Outlook will perform slower if there are a million other things running in the background, accessing its data. You can manage them either from the Outlook Options screen or with the free Add-in Utility that comes bundled with Bells Whistles for Outlook (our performance add-in). You can download the trial version from here and keep the Utility afterwards – it’s absolutely free!

c) Disable the RSS feature found in Outlook. Just go to the Options screen, then search and uncheck the option Sync RSS Feeds to the Common Feeds List . So that Outlook doesn’t slow up searching old RSS items, be sure to delete them all afterwards.

5. Keep your PST file size under control.

This one’s a doozy! Since your PST file is a database of all your emails, the larger it is – the slower Outlook will run. So, I found that it’s best to start a new PST every year or so (this is what I’m currently doing). In addition, you should also delete your duplicates (which can appear because of many factors) and your obsolete emails, compact your PST and archive old items. Another thing to remember is that by moving your attachments to your hard-drive instead of keeping them within the emails, Outlook will run much faster .

If Outlook is still slow or you would just like a program that effortlessly deals with all these options and more, then you can try our speed-improving add-in, Weight Diet for Outlook . Through a user-friendly interface you will be able to move compress file attachments to disk, identify eliminate obsolete emails, find delete duplicated emails, automatically upload attachments to the cloud and compress your PST file. All these options will take less time than if you would do them manually and will make your Outlook installation run like a race horse (or, because we’re talking about Outlook here, at least as a regular horse J ). You can download the latest version from here or just go and buy a license for only $29.95 (30-day money back guarantee).

Breast Asymmetry – When Does It Need Treatment?

Frederick R. Jelovsek MD

“I am 21 years old and for the past several years I noticed my left breast was somewhat larger but nothing to worry about. Now my breast is much larger and it hangs lower. The nipple feels different. It is quite uncomfortable. Anyway, do you think this could somehow catch up with the other breast? “.
anonymous

What Does It Mean If You Have

wdxcyber.com/breast-size-asymmetry.html”>Different Size Breasts

The right versus the left breast of any woman is very often of different size and even a different shape. Although common, these differences are perceptible but not very great. If it is a newly noticed size difference, the first question that should be asked is whether or not there is any solid or cystic growth in one breast that is making it larger than the other. Therefore be sure to visit the doctor, if you haven’t already, to be sure that there are no breast masses causing the discrepancy in size.

The three major determinants of breast appearance are size, shape of the individual breast and the position of the breast and nipple when standing in an upright position.

If surgical correction is undertaken with cosmetic surgery, the best success is obtained with correction of size alone. If both size and shape are different, the surgical results are not as good because each breast requires a different surgical procedure.

What causes a difference in the sizes of the breasts in a person?

Most doctors assume that breast size differences are either genetic tendencies or random events in which paired organs like the breasts just grow differentially with respect to starting and stopping.

The breasts are stimulated to grow under the influence of estrogen hormone in young girls. It begins with breast budding and about two years after that the first menstrual period occurs. The breast continues to grow for about 2-4 more years and it is during that time that there can be differences in size.

Catchup growth does take place but if you are now 21 years old and breast development has gone on more than about 6 years, then it is unlikely to change now until pregnancy or menopause. Those are the other two events that can change size and shape of the breasts.

PTSD and Substance Abuse in Veterans – PTSD: National Center for PTSD

PTSD and Substance Abuse in Veterans

Substance Abuse Flyer

Some people try to cope with their Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms by drinking heavily, using drugs, or smoking too much. People with PTSD have more problems with drugs and alcohol both before and after getting PTSD. Also, even if someone does not have a problem with alcohol before a traumatic event, getting PTSD increases the risk that he or she will develop a drinking or drug problem.

Eventually, the overuse of these substances can develop into Substance Use Disorder (SUD), and treatment should be given for both PTSD and SUD to lead to successful recovery. The good news is that treatment of co-occurring (happening at the same time) PTSD and SUD works.

How common is co-occurring PTSD and SUD in Veterans?

Studies show that there is a strong relationship between PTSD and SUD, in both civilian and military populations, as well as for both men and women.

Specific to Veterans:

  • More than 2 of 10 Veterans with PTSD also have SUD.
  • War Veterans with PTSD and alcohol problems tend to be binge drinkers. Binges may be in response to bad memories of combat trauma.
  • Almost 1 out of every 3 Veterans seeking treatment for SUD also has PTSD.
  • The number of Veterans who smoke (nicotine) is almost double for those with PTSD (about 6 of 10) versus those without a PTSD diagnosis (3 of 10).
  • In the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, about 1 in 10 returning soldiers seen in VA have a problem with alcohol or other drugs.

How can co-occurring PTSD and SUD create problems?

If someone has both PTSD and SUD, it is likely that he or she also has other health problems (such as physical pain), relationship problems (with family and/or friends), or problems in functioning (like keeping a job or staying in school). Using drugs and/or alcohol can make PTSD symptoms worse.

  • PTSD may create sleep problems (trouble falling asleep or waking up during the night). You might “medicate” yourself with alcohol or drugs because you think it helps your sleep, but drugs and alcohol change the quality of your sleep and make you feel less refreshed.
  • PTSD makes you feel “numb,” like being cut off from others, angry and irritable, or depressed. PTSD also makes you feel like you are always “on guard.” All of these feelings can get worse when you use drugs and alcohol.
  • Drug and alcohol use allows you to continue the cycle of “avoidance” found in PTSD. Avoiding bad memories and dreams or people and places can actually make PTSD last longer. You cannot make as much progress in treatment if you avoid your problems.
  • You may drink or use drugs because it distracts you from your problems for a short time, but drugs and alcohol make it harder to concentrate, be productive, and enjoy all parts of your life.

VA has made it easier to get help. It is important to know that treatment can help and you are not alone.

What treatments are offered for co-occurring PTSD and SUD?

Evidence shows that in general people have improved PTSD and SUD symptoms when they are provided treatment that addresses both conditions. This can involve any of the following (alone or together):

Talk with your provider about treatment for specific symptoms like pain, anger, or sleep problems.

What should I do if I think I have co-occurring PTSD and SUD?

The first step is to talk to a health professional and ask for more information about treatment options. Each VA medical center has an SUD-PTSD Specialist trained in treating both conditions to reach the best health outcomes. If there are signals you are at risk for both disorders, you will be encouraged to talk with a provider about how to best support your recovery. There are treatment resources at every VA medical center. The VA wants you to have the best possible care for co-occurring PTSD and SUD.

If you continue to be troubled or distracted by your experiences for more than three months or have questions about your drinking or drug use, learn more about treatment options. Life can be better! Talk to a VA or other health professional to discuss choices for getting started.

Quickbooks over VPN? Archive – Micro Focus Forums #operations, #work, #quickbooks, #long,

I recently set up our new accountant with the BM vpn and NW clients so that
she might be able to access our quickbooks 2000 database via a mapped drive
while connected to our BM3.7 server. She can connect fine, and althought QB
(a known resource hog) is fairly slow for most common operations over the
vpn (both client and server have SDSL connections over 500kbps), it is not
entirely unworkable. SOME particular operations, however, take an
IMPOSSIBLY long time (especially find operations in the records DB),
literally many, many orders of magnitude slower than everything else.

Is this really just due to the number of drive accesses involved in these
operations, or is there some other buggy issue at work here?

Does anyone know how to troubleshoot/work around this problem effectively?
We are really trying to avoid having to shutdown/lock the QB system long
enough for our accountant to copy the DB to a local machine, do her work,
and then write it back out to our system. We really need a way for her to
be able to work remotely AND concurrently with the rest of us.

Many, many thanks in advance for any help.

You will probably need to take some traces (Ethereal on the PC’s
involved) to see what kind of traffic is involved. Might be as simple
as needing to reduce MTU size on one or both ends of that connection.

Perhaps simpler would be to use pcANYWHERE, VNC or terminal server/RDP
to remote control an internal PC over the VPN to do the work remotely.

My experience with Quickbooks over a lan is that the newer versions can be a
little slow as it is. I would venture to say that there is just way too
much data to push through that small DSL pipe.

14-Apr-2005, 04:07 PM

Thanks for the input Craig and JP,

I apologize for my own sluggish response. I actually found a post on
another site that echoed Craig’s suggestion of running quickbooks on a local
machine and having the remote client connect to it using pcAnywhere or the
like so that all the heavy drive accesses remain local. I’m going to give
that a try.

Thanks again for the help,

Hillary Clinton Has a Family Problem—and It’s Not Bill – Mother Jones

Hillary Clinton Has a Family Problem—and It’s Not Bill

Jeb Bush isn t the only likely presidential candidate with a brother problem.

Last month, the Department of Homeland Security s inspector general revealed that an agency official had intervened in 2014 to help longtime Clinton ally Terry McAuliffe, now the governor of Virginia, obtain EB-5 visas (a steppingstone toward a green card) for employees of his electric-car company. Also named in the report was Tony Rodham, the youngest of Hillary Clinton s two brothers, whose company McAuliffe enlisted to secure those visas.

The inspector general chided the DHS official who oversaw the visa program for pressuring his staff to process the request from Gulf Coast Funds Management, where Rodham serves as CEO, despite an incomplete business plan, insufficient economic impact analysis, and lack of support for estimating direct employment. Watergate it wasn t McAuliffe and Rodham had just asked for a favor. But for Hillary Clinton, the news may have evoked a familiar dread.

Hillary s campaign-in-waiting has been mulling the question of how to handle her headline-grabbing husband whose off-the-cuff remarks occasionally brought negative attention to her 2008 campaign but the former secretary of state and her advisers also will have to look out for her brothers, Hugh and Tony, who have a history of embarrassing their sister.

As a former Clinton White House staffer once told the New York Times, You never wanted to hear their name come up in any context other than playing golf.

The Rodham brothers have been involved with the Clinton political machine since the beginning. In 1974, they moved from Illinois to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to volunteer on Bill Clinton s first congressional campaign. After Clinton lost, Hugh and Tony enrolled at the University of Arkansas. Hugh went on to become a public defender in Miami and helped develop the city s first drug courts. Tony worked as a South Florida process-server. But after Bill and Hillary Clinton moved into the White House in 1993, the brothers were granted entr e to a whole different world. And they made the most of it.

In 1993, shortly before Clinton was sworn in, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Rodham brothers had been soliciting corporate donations for their own inaugural ball at the Mayflower Hotel. (Despite the controversy, they held the party.) Then, in 1994, Hugh decided to run for the Senate in Florida against Republican incumbent Connie Mack. But he struggled to defeat his Democratic primary opponent, a talk radio host who believed the government was covering up the truth about aliens and who accused Bill Clinton of pushing a Nazi agenda. Hugh got demolished in the general election.

Tony, meanwhile, landed a job as a field organizer with the Democratic National Committee and married Sen. Barbara Boxer s daughter, Nicole. But he soon struck out on his own, launching a consulting firm. In 1997, he traveled with three business partners to Cambodia, where he met with newly installed dictator Hun Sen to discuss possible investments in the country. Hun Sen, who had come to power in a bloody coup, was gearing up for the upcoming election by intimidating his political opponents, and the US government had taken a hands-off approach to the regime. Rodham suggested that his visit might help the peace process and open up the nation to American business. We came to see what fits here in Cambodia, and there are many fits, he told reporters speaking at a hotel, the Associated Press dryly noted, that was owned by a Cambodian businessman banned from doing business in the United States because of his alleged involvement in the drug trade.

A few years later, another embarrassing foreign adventure landed the Rodham brothers in the news. In 1999, Hugh and Tony entered into a $118 million joint venture to grow and export hazelnuts with Aslan Abashidze, a strongman in a semiautonomous region of the Republic of Georgia (who had allegedly murdered one of his top deputies in the early 1990s). Abashidze and the Rodhams weren t just partners Tony Rodham agreed to become the godfather to Abashidze s grandsons. Abashidze interpreted his deal with the brothers as a de facto endorsement by the president himself, and he told reporters that the American branch of the hazelnut-importing business would be located next to the White House. This was news to the Clinton White House, which was allied with Abashidze s rival, Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze. Ultimately, the Rodhams called off the deal because of the controversy. Abashidze would later flee to Russia shortly before a Georgian court sentenced him to 15 years in prison for embezzlement.

The Rodhams continued to trade on their family connection. In 2000, Tony Rodham successfully lobbied President Clinton to pardon a Tennessee couple convicted of bank fraud, over the objections of the Justice Department. Tony insisted that he took up the couple s cause pro bono. But congressional investigators later found the couple had paid him a $244,769 salary as a consultant. And Hugh Rodham was paid $434,000 to lobby successfully for pardons for a cocaine trafficker and a fraudster who peddled an anti-baldness treatment. (He later gave the money back.)

Hillary Clinton would hardly be the first presidential candidate dogged by family matters. Jimmy Carter s brother, Billy, launched his own line of beer and signed on as a lobbyist for Libya. George W. Bush s brother Neil toured East Asia with a Korean cult leader promoting a tunnel between Russia and Alaska. And FDR s nephew, Tadd, became tabloid fodder after eloping with a Hungarian prostitute.

In recent years, the Rodham brothers have largely kept a low profile. But as the recent report by the inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security illustrated, their dealings could once again become a headache for their sister. The company Tony works for, Gulf Coast Funds Management, specializes in obtaining special visas for foreigners interested in doing business in the United States. The company is owned by a Virginia businessman named Charles Wang, who with Terry McAuliffe cofounded the electric-car company GreenTech automotive. According to Politico. Tony has worked to line up investors for the car company in China. Hugh Rodham is a partner in the Florida law firm Rodham Fine. Neither of the Rodham brothers responded to interview requests.

The Rodham boys need to be careful, is my advice to them, another former first-family member from South Florida told the St. Petersburg Times in 1993. Never assume that even after you ve dotted every i and crossed every t that it ll be perceived that way by friends or foe. It was sound piece of advice from Jeb Bush.

Get the scoop, straight from Mother Jones.
