The SGLI Online Enrollment System (SOES) is Now Live for Navy and Air Force Servicemembers

Beginning August 2, 2017, Air Force members can manage their Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI) coverage using the SGLI Online Enrollment System (SOES). Air Force members join their fellow Navy members in using the new system. Navy began using SOES on April 5, 2017. Air Force and Navy members should look for information from their service about when they should access SOES to confirm and certify their SGLI elections.

SOES access for other branches of service is planned for release on the following schedule*:

    • Army October 2017
    • Marine Corps December 2017
    • Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration February/March 2018

*This schedule is subject to change.

SGLI provides automatic life insurance coverage of $400,000 to Servicemembers upon enlistment. Members with SGLI also get automatic coverage for their dependent children and spouses (unless the child or spouse is insured under SGLI as a Servicemember) under the Family SGLI program and traumatic injury protection (TSGLI). Servicemembers with full-time SGLI coverage will no longer have to complete a paper SGLV-8286 to make changes to their coverage or beneficiary elections. Instead, these Servicemembers can use the online system, SOES, to manage the amount of their SGLI and spouse coverage and to designate or update beneficiaries.

To access SOES, go to, sign in, and go to Benefits, Life Insurance SOES- SGLI Online Enrollment System. Servicemembers can log in with their CAC or with their DS Logon using Internet Explorer as soon as they receive notice that SOES access is available. Servicemembers can then make sure their SGLI coverage and beneficiaries are up-to-date.

Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) is a low-cost group term life insurance program for Servicemembers. Coverage can be extended for up to two years if the Servicemember is totally disabled at separation.

Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) allows Veterans to convert your SGLI to a civilian program of lifetime renewable term coverage after separation from service.

Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (FSGLI) insures spouses and children of Servicemembers with SGLI coverage. Spousal coverage may not exceed the Servicemember’s coverage. Dependent children are automatically covered at no charge.

Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI) is an automatic feature of SGLI that provides payments to Servicemembers who suffer losses, such as amputations, blindness, and paraplegia, due to traumatic injuries that occur in service.

Service-Disabled Veterans’ Life Insurance (S-DVI) provides life insurance coverage to Veterans who have been given a VA rating for a new service-connected disability in the last two years. Totally disabled Veterans are eligible for free coverage and have the opportunity to purchase additional life insurance.

Veterans’ Mortgage Life Insurance (VMLI) provides mortgage life insurance protection to disabled Veterans who have been approved for a VA Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant.

    Control Fire Systems has everything our company needs. We called them and inquired about their products and had them install fire suppression, marine fire systems, fire alarm panels, fire alarm devices, fire extinguishers and fire safety products. I highly recommend them to everyone.

    Control Fire System came on time for our scheduled quote on refilling our clean agent cylinder. They did a fast and efficient job and also provided cylinder hydrostatic testing and emergency cylinder recharges in case of any emergencies in the future. This is something like the fifth or sixth time we’ve used them and it’s always gone well. We’ll look forward to having CFS come back in future.

    We purchased a fire alarm from you guys, for some out buildings where we run repair work. Recently, we had a small fire and the fire alarm detected it immediately and alerted my staff. Great to see a product working as it’s supposed to.

    Over the years, I have called them to do site inspections and go through what needs to be done and fixed. They are really good at installation and maintenance of fire systems and everything is running smoothly.

    One of our motels failed a fire alarm test in the fall. The technician from Control Fire System was very professional and experienced. He went through the guidelines and procedures and suggested replacement of most of the alarms and maintenance for the sprinklers. The work went off fairly quickly and we felt much more confident once the work was completed. We’re pleased we trusted the solid reviews of this company and will be using them for the remainder of our properties.

    Your team of technicians and staff was a pleasure to do business with from the initial sales call through to the final briefing after installation. We had a close call last year and I can tell you that everyone on our end is feeling better with the new fire suppression systems in place.

    They replaced a fire control panel for us this summer and I just wanted to pass on a compliment on how quickly I got a response and had the techs come out. We did the usual three quotes and Control Fire was easily the most responsive. It was very reassuring and the integration went seamlessly. We’ll be updating the rest of the systems in steps and now know who to call.

    I manage maintenance at a nearly 10,000 sqf facility in the east end and Control Fire Systems is contracted to check out our systems twice annually. They’ve done some fan air testing as well as the fire systems and everything has been in order since I started here. I recommend to any plant manager getting into a regular contract situation with a reputable company like this one. It’s great piece of mind.

    Whenever one of our larger commercial units changes hands, expands, renovates, etc. I call in Control Fire Systems. They assess and do upgrades and repairs where necessary which actually adds to the bottom line if a sale is involved. One of the great tricks of property management is being sure you’re not getting gouged by contractors downstream and having these guys onboard has been a great relief in that regard. It’s a partnership I plan to continue to take advantage of.

    I wasn’t involved in the sales negotiation as the property management handled that but I can tell you that in terms of implementation they were wonderful to work with. We had accounting and other non-tech people in on the first meetings and Control Fire Systems was really able to capture the specifics and timelines in a way we could all grasp. I feel better knowing the care home is as safe as can be.

    Our office building purchased Control Fire Services portable extinguishers a few years ago. We had them do a fire extinguisher inspection, refill (we have actually needed that!), repair and recharge. Impressed with the 6-year fire extinguisher maintenance if anything goes wrong. A good choice for commercial operations.

    Types of Service

    The AlarmNet network’s reliability is assured with a state of the art network control center that houses dedicated communication services and hardware platforms. Hardware servers and communication paths are completely redundant, with hot back-up databases housed in two separate locations. If one system were to have a catastrophic event, the other system can take over without any service interruption. Both locations are equipped with battery and generator backup along with technical support 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week for uninterrupted service. This level of sophistication allows us to handle alarm communication for UL listed and critical high-line security installations.

    Network Architecture

    In the AlarmNet architecture, although each of the networks are independent of one another, subscriber radios and Internet transmitters may send messages from one network and be received at nearly any central station location in North America over another technology. The AlarmNet Network Control Center (NCC) accomplishes this integration. This design offers the following important benefits:

    1. Integration of Multiple Networks

    One of the fundamental principles behind AlarmNet is the integration of different network types. In the AlarmNet architecture, member central stations are equipped with AlarmNet wireless or Internet receiving equipment or both. This equipment communicates directly with the AlarmNet network. Depending on its needs at installation at the protected premise, an installer may choose to use any of the available types of subscriber radios or Internet transmitters, whichever works best for that installation. Although each of the different products may report through a different network, the central station does not need to incur the costs of time, money, or labor to operate, maintain, and integrate all of these networks.

    When a central station signs up with AlarmNet, it establishes a network connection scheme between the central station and AlarmNet and as a result gains access to any of its customers at the protected premise through that scheme and the interaction of AlarmNet.

    2. Learn One, Know Them All

    All of the different subscriber devices used for the different network services have a similar look and feel. The same programming tool is used for most of the devices. All signals are delivered to the central station in a uniform, familiar reporting format. This assures that the central station can receive signals from any type of AlarmNet subscriber; past, present, or future. Once equipped to receive alarm messages from the AlarmNet network, the central station can provide network services to any subscriber without additional expense.

    3. Supervision and Speed of Delivery

    AlarmNet radios and transmitters are supervised on a regular basis. The supervision is performed automatically, and is transparent to the central station. The AlarmNet network communicates with all AlarmNet devices on a regular basis, assuring that they are operational. The AlarmNet network reports to the central station only when there is a problem. The central station does not need to worry about supervision or maintenance of the network, since the network performs these functions automatically. The central station only receives the signals it needs: actual alarm or trouble messages. When the network receives an alarm, it automatically and immediately forwards the signal to the appropriate central station. The AlarmNet transmission generally will reach the central station before the traditional dialer-based signal, in cases where an AlarmNet device and the digital dialer both send signals.

    4. Secure, Redundant, Wireless Protection

    Not all competitive wireless subscriber services offered in the market are wireless at both ends. For example, due to the design of the cellular network, competing cellular services deliver signals to the central station over the regular switched telephone network. In these cases, the communications integrity of the central station (and all premises protected by that central station) is vulnerable to the same weaknesses as any landline-dependent customer (line cut, service outages, and natural disasters). Limited services such as these protect only a portion of the communications chain. Standard AlarmNet wireless delivery, however, assures an end-to-end wireless system that provides redundancy, supervision, and verification of message delivery. It only makes sense that the central station should use wireless communications to maintain the same level of security and performance in its communications infrastructure as it does at the protected premises.

    In order to maintain a redundant, invulnerable link to subscribers using wireline-terminated networks, a service provider must maintain at least two physically distinct and independent connections to every network type. AlarmNet maintains such connections at every level, saving the central station the expense and complexity of maintaining such an elaborate communications infrastructure. AlarmNet’s connection to the central station also has two layers of redundancy: every central station is equipped with a primary and backup transceiver.

    The Sierra Core Retirement Fund invests in underlying funds, including mutual funds, closed-end-funds and ETFs.     Thousands of men and women meet online every day and while online dating has expanded the dating universe like never before; a few bad guys fly under the radar and attempt to scam innocent people. While scams asking for money are more common in online dating, it is important to be aware of other equally important fraudulent practices such as identity theft.

    What is Identity Theft?

    To put it simply, when someone steals or attempts to steal your identity it is known as identity theft. Identity thieves use the victim’s personal information and details to fraudulently pose as the victim, usually for financial benefits.

    How Do Thieves Steal Identities?

    The identity thief uses the victim’s identity for personal gain and this leads to identity fraud. They make use of personal information such as bank account details, social security or tax file numbers, credit card details or any other financial account information for their personal benefit. They can get hold of this information through various online and offline methods.

    • Phishing They send emails or pop-up messages, pretending to be your financial institution to get you to reveal your personal details.
    • Pretending Once they obtain your personal email address or phone number, again they pretend to be your financial institution to get a hold of your information.
    • Changing Your Address If they know your home address, they can change the address and divert your bills and bank statements to a different address.

    In the offline world, some identity thieves resort to literally stealing your information.

    • Stealing They steal wallets, credit cards, mail from mail boxes, pre-approved credit offers etc. At the corporate level, they even target companies and steal personnel information from their databases.
    • Dumpster Diving They rummage through the rubbish to look for identifying information or bills they can use.

    Staying Safe

    Don’t become a victim of identity fraud; take these steps to prevent it from happening to you while you’re dating online.

    • Do not post or share any personal information and details with anyone, no matter how safe you think it might be. Bank account details, a credit card number or a social security or tax file number is often all a thief needs for fraud.
    • If you are talking to someone on the phone, get to know them before you give them your cell phone number. Identity thieves have been known to use home and work phone numbers in reverse phone directories to reveal addresses etc so it s probably best you get to know someone a little before you share your contact details with them.
    • Keep a log of your chat or IM sessions wherever possible, just in case you need it in the future.
    • Do not entertain any requests to cash a cashiers check as these checks are usually fake and as a victim you not only lose your money but could also reveal sensitive personal information to the scammer.
    • Monitor your credit reports regularly to ensure there has been no unusual activity on your account. You can also freeze your report so credit issuers can only access your report when you give them permission to do so.
    • If you receive emails, text messages or phone calls asking you for sensitive information, make sure you double check with the bank or financial institution as they will usually not ask for sensitive information over the phone.
    • Use a locked mail box so your mail cannot be stolen and make sure you shred paper before you throw it in the garbage.

    Getting Help

    Sensitive information in the hands of a thief can lead to several kinds of identity fraud – credit card, bank and finance, government documents (getting a driver’s license in the victim’s name; using social security number), getting a job pretending to be the victim, renting services etc. Obviously an imposter is bad news and if you think you are a victim of identity theft/ fraud, you must get help immediately.

    • File a police report.
    • Immediately notify creditors.
    • Dispute unauthorized transactions and doing so will help restore your name and credit report.
    • Set up a fraud alert on your credit report to prevent the thief from opening further accounts
    • Close the accounts that have been tampered with
