Admissions Selectivity

This rating measures how competitive admissions are at the school. This rating is determined by several institutionally reported factors, including: the class rank, standardized test scores, and high school GPA of entering freshmen; the percentage of students who hail from out-of-state; and the percentage of applicants accepted. This rating is given on a scale of 60 99. Please note that if a school has an Admissions Selectivity Rating of 60* (sixty with an asterisk), it means that the school did not report to us enough of the statistics that go into the rating in order for us to accurately measure its admissions selectivity.

Financial Aid

Fire Safety

This rating measures how well prepared a school is to prevent or respond to campus fires, on a scale of 60 99 .

We asked all the schools we annually collect data from to answer several questions about their efforts to ensure fire safety for campus residents. We developed the questions in consultation with the Center for Campus Fire Safety (www.campusfiresafety.org ), a nonprofit organization devoted to reducing the loss of life from fire at our nation’s campuses.

The questions cover:

1) The percentage of student housing sleeping rooms protected by an automatic fire sprinkler system with a fire sprinkler head located in the individual sleeping rooms.

2) The percentage of student housing sleeping rooms equipped with a smoke detector connected to a supervised fire alarm system.

3) The number of malicious fire alarms that occur in student housing per year.

4) The number of unwanted fire alarms that occur in student housing per year.

5) The banning of certain hazardous items and activities in residence halls, like candles, smoking, halogen lamps, etc.

6) The percentage of student housing building fire alarm systems that, if activated, result in a signal being transmitted to a monitored location on campus or the fire department.

Colleges that did not supply answers to a sufficient number of these safety questions for us to fairly compare them to other colleges receive a Fire Safety Rating of 60* (sixty with an asterisk). The schools have an opportunity to update their fire safety data every year and will have their fire safety ratings recalculated and published annually.

Quality of Life

This rating is a measure of how happy students are with their lives outside the classroom, on a scale of 60 99. We weighed several factors, including students’ assessments of their overall happiness; the beauty, safety, and location of the campus; the comfort of dorms; the quality of food; the ease of getting around campus and dealing with administrators; the friendliness of fellow students; the interaction of different student types; and the quality of the school’s relationship with the local community. Please note that if a school has a Quality of Life Rating of 60* (sixty with an asterisk), it means that the school did not report to us all of the statistics that go into the rating by our deadline.

Green

This rating, on a scale of 60 99. provides a comprehensive measure of a school’s performance as an environmentally aware and prepared institution. Specifically, it includes 1) whether students have a campus quality of life that is both healthy and sustainable, 2) how well a school is preparing students for employment in the clean-energy economy of the 21st century as well as for citizenship in a world now defined by environmental concerns and opportunities and 3) how environmentally responsible a school’s policies are.

Additionally, The Princeton Review, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and Sierra magazine have collaborated on an effort to streamline the reporting process for institutions that choose to participate in various higher education sustainability assessments. The intent of this initiative is to reduce and streamline the amount of time campus staff spend tracking sustainability data and completing related surveys.

To address this issue, these four groups have worked to establish the Campus Sustainability Data Collector (CSDC). The CSDC is based on the STARS Reporting Tool and is available for all schools (free of charge) that would like to submit data to these groups in one single survey. We asked all the schools we annually collect data from to answer questions about their efforts to provide (and continually develop) an environmentally beneficial student experience. The questions were created in consultation with ecoAmerica, a research- and partnership-based environmental nonprofit that convened an expert committee to design this comprehensive ranking system. Colleges that did not supply answers to a sufficient number of the questions for us to fairly compare them to other schools received a Green Rating of 60*. The schools have an opportunity to update their sustainability data every year and will have their ratings recalculated and published annually.

  • What is the percentage of food expenditures that goes toward local, organic or otherwise environmentally preferable food?

  • Does the school have a formal committee with participation from students that is devoted to advancing sustainability on campus?
  • Are school buildings that were constructed or underwent major renovations in the past three years LEED certified?
  • What is a school’s overall waste-diversion rate?
  • Does the school have an environmental studies major, minor or concentration?
  • Do the school’s students graduate from programs that include sustainability as a required learning outcome or include multiple sustainability learning outcomes?
  • Does the school have a formal plan to mitigate its greenhouse gas emissions?
  • What percentage of the school’s energy consumption is derived from renewable resources?
  • Does the school employ a dedicated full-time (or full-time equivalent) sustainability officer?

Overview

Electricians know the ins and outs of designing lighting systems, installing street lights and intercom systems, ensuring electrical work is up to code and repairing electrical wiring. Electricians must go through at least four years of training as an apprentice, followed by the licensing their state requires. Most in the profession specialize in either designing, installing, maintaining and repairing the motors, equipment and electrical systems of businesses and factories or installing, maintaining and repairing the electrical systems of residences.

“I like to work on projects that have complex systems, such as water and wastewater treatment facilities,” says Ryan Lee, a journeyman electrician and crew leader with the Ohio-based company Claypool Electric. “I am kind of a perfectionist, and these types of facilities require a great deal of accuracy to ensure that tasks are done accurately.”

There are other subsets, like electricians who specialize in iron and steel mills, or electricians who coordinate the lighting for a motion picture or television program. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the most stable employment is for electricians who work for businesses and factories. And this is a profession where employment is expected to blossom. Installing alternative energy sources in homes and businesses requires coordination with electricians, and these professionals are still needed to maintain older electrical systems. The BLS predicts this occupation will grow by 14 percent by 2024, which translates to 85,900 new positions.

Training

The job of an electrician is physically demanding and can be very dangerous if it’s not done correctly. That’s why a good training program is imperative. Some choose to attend a technical school before entering their apprenticeship program, although this isn’t required. And most program entrants are at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. However, not everyone enters the field at a young age.

Martin Messerly, another employee with Claypool Electric who had previously worked nearly three decades as a journeyman mean cutter, says, “I never knew there would be a way for me to become a state-certified journeyman electrician at this point in my life. I always thought that it was something that you had to do right out of high school. Now, I just finished my fourth year of apprenticeship training, and with a few more [on-the-job training] hours, I will be a state-certified journeyman electrician.”

Why did we develop an MBA ranking?

There are currently more than eight major MBA rankings available to prospective students, not counting rankings for military MBA programs or rankings of schools by country. While these tools can help individuals better understand factors such as post-graduate salary and projected employment outcomes, they do not provide insight into other important aspects of business school, such as student-to-professor ratios or specialty programs, like human resources management or entrepreneurship.

We have written before about how program rankings can be manipulated, faulty or decided with little or no information on the part of ranking officials. Many a b-school has criticized the rankings process, calling it a beauty contest, a self-fulfilling prophecy, and a serious time and resource drain for participating schools. In general, such rankings should not be the sole deciding factor in choosing an MBA program or even used as a tool of school selection. Factors such as class flexibility, tuition, alumni base, and program offerings should matter more to prospective students than an institution’s ranking.

To help make sense of these rankings, and balance them with other aspects of what business schools have to offer, we interviewed MBA professors, deans and admissions directors for their opinions on what value MBA rankings can have, and the additional factors MBA applicants should consider when applying. In addition, we combined the most popular MBA program rankings to give as close to a comprehensive ranking as possible. Hopefully, this will arm students with the information they need to narrow their search and eventually choose the program that best aligns with their academic and professional goals.

While our comprehensive MBA rankings evaluate only full-time programs at this time, prospective students can find which schools have been ranked highest for specific MBA programs, such as finance, part-time, marketing, online, international business, and the executive MBA, elsewhere on our site. Home health aides do more than sweep floors and wash clothes for patients unable to complete chores by themselves. In some instances, they meticulously administer care that can range from patching cuts and scrapes to bathing clients. These workers spend so much time with their patients that, in many instances, they become like family members.

“Many of our patients will think of their [home care aide] as the nurse that really cured them because he or she helped them do the things they needed to do to get well,” says Andrea Devoti, chairman of the National Association for Home Care Hospice. Personal care aides have some duties that overlap with home health aides, although the latter might also perform nursing functions like dressing wounds.

Baby boomers are expected to have an increasing need for help with household chores and companionship. Home care is typically less expensive than nursing home or hospital care, and many senior citizens prefer to remain in their home for as long as possible. As a result, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts rapid employment growth of 38 percent between 2014 and 2024, which translates into 348,400 new home health aide positions created over the next decade.

Home health aides earned a median salary of $21,380 in 2014, or $10.28 per hour, according to the BLS. The highest-paid earned about $29,560, while the lowest-paid earned about $17,040. State governments pay home health aides particularly well. The metropolitan areas that compensate their home health aides the best include San Francisco; Glens Falls, New York; and Waterbury, Connecticut.

Training

Most aides have a high school diploma, although this degree is not required for the position. Aides at agencies that receive funding from Medicare or Medicaid must get a minimum level of training and pass a competency evaluation or receive state certification. The requirements for certification vary by state and often include formal training at community colleges or vocational schools. Home health aides can also be certified by the National Association for Home Care Hospice. which involves 75 hours of training and passing a written exam. Training tasks include housekeeping chores such as cooking for clients who have special dietary needs, learning how to treat infections and basic safety techniques like emergency readiness.
