The Best Ways to Book Cheaper Hotel Rates – TripIt Blog, cheap

cheap hotel rate

Cheap hotel rate

Don’t hotels always seem to account for the largest portion of your travel funds? They certainly do for me. Even if you’re not booking a 4- or 5-star property, a few days stay in a hotel can easily set you back $500, if not more. I like a nice hotel as much as the next person, but when I’m on a budget, I want to make sure I have enough after airfare and lodging to actually enjoy my trip: have good meals, go sightseeing, and buy some souvenirs for my loved ones.

After years of working in the travel industry and having lots of personal travel experience, I’ve learned a few tricks and tips on how to book cheaper hotel rates that I wanted to share. Be sure to share any tips you might have in the comments below.

Use a Metasearch Engine

The popularity of hotel metasearch engines is on the rise and for good reason: it’s one of the most efficient ways to find affordable accommodations. If you’re unfamiliar with this concept, a hotel metasearch engine is a website that searches multiple hotel booking sites at once. For example, instead of running a search on Expedia, Orbitz, Priceline, and the hotel’s website, you can use a metasearch engine to search multiple sites at once to see which provider offers the lowest rates and best value. Kayak, Hipmunk, Room 77, TripAdvisor, and Trivago are just a few of the options available.

Call the Hotel Directly

If you have a particular hotel in mind, calling the hotel directly can often result in better rates. Since you’re able to speak with someone in real time, the staff will often be privy to rates that aren’t advertised online or, at the very least, they ll be able to give you insight as to what s affecting hotel room pricing. Events like conferences, concerts, and conventions can cause hotel room prices to skyrocket, and of course, certain times of year, such as the holidays, will see more expensive rates. If I’m traveling and I’ve found out there’s an event causing hotel rooms in the city center to be more expensive, then I’ll research hotels away from the city center to find lower rates.

Note: Be sure to call the hotel directly and not the 800 number, where you’ll just be routed through central reservations and end up speaking to someone who isn’t onsite at the property.

Book Cancelable Rates

Room rates can fluctuate as quickly as minute to minute because a hotel s inventory is always changing. It’s simple supply and demand: the more people booking rooms at a hotel, the more the hotel can charge. One thing I like to do if I’m flexible with my hotel choice is to book a cancelable rate. It should be fairly obvious which rates are actually cancelable; there’s usually a call-out that states something like “FREE cancellation – PAY LATER,” as seen on Booking.com. I’ll book this rate (I plead though – double and triple check that it’s actually cancelable) and then monitor the price, as well as prices of nearby, comparable hotels. It may take a little bit of extra legwork, but this tactic has saved me as much as $100 per night.

Note: Not all hotels or providers offer cancelable rates. Look at a few different sites and properties to find a suitable hotel that provides a cancelable rate.

Book Last Minute

This is a trick best reserved for shorter trips, like romantic weekend getaways or impromptu get-togethers with friends in the city. I certainly wouldn’t advocate waiting till the last minute to book a hotel room for that expensive international trip you’ve been saving up for or leaving your lodging needs up to fate when there could be a major conference happening that results in a hotel room shortage. That being said, if you do a bit of research and are flexible, booking last minute can result in much cheaper rates. Last-minute booking apps like HotelTonight, which works with hotels to negotiate deep discounts on unsold rooms, are a great starting point, and many of the online booking sites, like Expedia and Priceline, have their own “Tonight” or “Deals Tonight” section.

Tip: Many sites offer last-minute deals sections, but are really just pulling the available inventory for the specified locale (not that this is a bad thing), as opposed to working with hotels to provide negotiated last-minute deals. Just be aware of this and shop around before committing to any last-minute deals.

Remember to use TripIt to organize all of your hotel confirmations (and any other trip confirmations) in one spot. You can also sign up for a free 30-day trial of TripIt Pro to try out premium features like alerts, alternate flights, seat tracker, point tracker, fare monitoring, and more.

The Secrets to Finding Lower Hotel Rates, best hotel rate.#Best #hotel #rate

The Secrets to Finding Lower Hotel Rates

Even if you have a strict budget or per diem, there is no reason to have to stay in a low-budget motel. Many of the nicest hotels in the world offer deals online that are far below their standard rack rates. Knowing where to look online can get you a standard room in a hotel far nicer than you might have thought your budget would allow. For your next trip, try these sources.

Quikbook lets you choose a hotel by inputting your dates of travel and your price range.

Even in larger cities, you can find a room in a really nice hotel for as little as half of the rack rates.

Check the Hotel s Home Page

This may sound like a no-brainer, but many people skip this step. No matter which online service you use to book your hotel, check the hotel s official web site first for deals and discounts. Many list Internet-only specials that are not available anywhere else. It s prudent to compare the deals you get directly from the hotel before you book, although it may require a phone call to confirm availability.

Compare, Compare, Compare

You might think, with real-time information zooming across the Internet all the time now, that all of the online booking web sites would have exactly the same rates. Not so. In fact, I ve often found vastly different rates for similar rooms at the same hotel on Travelocity, Expedia, and Quikbook. It s worth taking the few extra minutes to pull up the same hotel on a few different services and compare the prices.

Deals and Discounts

If you are going to a popular destination like Disney World, there are a number of sites that can help you find the best hotel rates around. For example, MouseSavers.com lists the discount codes for Disney World as well as information on which online booking service has the best prices.

(Check the Disney World section of this site for links.) If you re traveling somewhere else, Hotels/Resorts/Inns also lists discounts and special deals for hotels and resorts worldwide.

Before You Bid

Priceline can come through with ultra-low rates in a pinch. Before you bid on any hotels, check Bidding For Travel, a forum that can help you greatly increase your odds of getting a good Priceline value. Other travelers will tell you what prices they re getting successful bids on with particular hotels and cities. The advice there is invaluable and should always be your first stop before you place a Priceline bid. Also, be sure to see Beat the Bidding System for a few tricks to getting the most out of Priceline.

Whatever your desires, the Midwest is a must-see stop for any traveler.

Let’s begin our journey in the birthplace of that delectable deep-dish pizza we mentioned. Chicago hotels are about much more than tempting tidbits. Promenade along Navy Pier for waterfront tableaus or take yourself upward, to the top of the Willis Tower for sweeping skyline views.

Best hotel rateAre you a last minute hotel booker or one who plans out trips months in advance? If you are a business traveller, chances are that you are the former. If you aren t, then you are just the guy who could do with this article. Come to think of it, even if you are a business traveller who lives out of a suitcase, it would pay to keep these hotel search engines bookmarked because it could give you some room near your bottom-line.

Searching for the best hotel deals in town is one topic we have discussed at length on MUO. We still like to put out the information now and again because hotel search engines are essential traveller tools to be used before you pack your suitcase.

Here are ten of the best hotel search engines that fetch you the best deals when you travel.

Google Hotel Finder

Best hotel rate

We start with the usual suspects and Google with its experimental Google Hotel Finder is one for the top billing. Head over to our directory mention for a brief introduction. Google Hotel Finder could go from an experiment to a full-scale assault on the other hotel and travel websites out there because it brings in a few conveniences. For instance, you can compare hotel prices (the price slider is a big help) and put them in a shortlist and track them over time. Tracking is a big help when you want to grab the best deal in town. You can use filters and the Google map to search out hotels in a selected area; select them by travel time; and pick the ones which are near the urban hot spots.

Bing Travel Rate Indicator

Best hotel rate

Bing Travel goes head to head (or is it the other way around) with Google Hotel Finder. The Rate Indicator here is a great help when you are trying to find whether the hotel tariff is a good deal or not. You can also do a historic search for specific dates. It is only available for 30 U.S. cities at present. The Rate Indicator shows yellow, green, and red legends on a Bing Map to indicate the hotness of a deal. The usual Bing Travel search engine though gives you a comparative search with Hotwire, Hotels.com, Travelocity, Expedia, and Priceline. These are few of the top notch travel and hotel websites.

Hotels.com

Best hotel rate

Hotels.com is one of the most comprehensive hotel booking websites around which covers 140,000 hotels worldwide. It is a one-window solution to all your search and booking needs. It gives you localized information plus great deals and rewards programs. Hotels.com claims that it gives you the cheapest rates and if you find anything cheaper they will match it. Hotels.com also does not charge cancellation fees. Download their free iPad, iPhone, Android app.

Best hotel rate

This is a Europe and U.K centric site which covers properties worldwide too. Laterooms lists a total of 33,000 properties. Sign-up to receive best deals by email or periodically visit the Special Offers section on the site. The hotel search engine uncovers deals like Extra special discounts; Added value extras; Free hotel nights; and package deals when you stay for more than one night.

Tripadvisor

Best hotel rate

Tripadvisor is one of the most well-known search engines for travel and hotel deals. We mentioned it when we saw 5 Review Sites To Help You Find The Perfect Hotel and it certainly deserves another mention here. The site suggests reviews and advice on hotels, resorts, flights, vacation rentals, vacation packages, travel guides, and lots more. One of the features you might use most often is the filter that lets you sort the hotels by the amenities on offer.

Booking.com

Best hotel rate

Hotel search and booking websites are usually choc-a-bloc with information. I like the relatively uncluttered layout of this hotel search engine which is also aided by the large and clear fonts that are used. You can use the search engine to locate and hotel reservations. Their tag line says 187,784 hotels in 163 countries worldwide. So, that s quite a sweep. Subscribe to the email newsletter for flash deals.

Hotels Combined

Best hotel rate

Hotels Combined and its hotel search engine too covers the world. The site says that its Verified Reviews (a trademarked service) accepts and quantifies reviews from verified, paying customers only. The hotel search engine compares prices across a bunch of hotel pricing sites. You can view the list when you search for the best hotel by destination.

Hotwire

Best hotel rate

The discount travel site negotiates the best hotel deals (along with other travel related ones) and presents them to you as Hotwire Hot Rates. You can also use the site s Tripwatcher tool to watch out for price drops. The results are compared with other sites like Expedia, Kayak, Tripadvisor, and Orbitz. Check out the site s Planning Tools section for a few more travel aids which help you plan your trip.

Venere

Best hotel rate

104.000 hotels and listing of other accommodation types in more than 130 countries makes this best hotel search engine holds its own against the best of its ilk. Also includes Bed and Breakfasts and vacation rentals. The site gives you a colorful map-based search tool for finding out the best hotel deal in town.

Roomkey

Best hotel rate

Six of the largest hotel companies in the world (Choice Hotels International, Hilton Worldwide, Hyatt Hotels Corporation, InterContinental Hotels Group, Marriott International and Wyndham Hotel Group) collaborated to start up Roomkey. The hotel search engine is specifically tailored for their clientele and aims to offer travelers direct access to a broad network of hotels around the globe, provide accurate and comprehensive information, make it easy for travelers to discover what s right for them. And in one word, the interface is superb.

These ten hotel search engines are at the forefront of the pack, and there are more of them. Most of the websites in the hotel search category are quite similar offering a mix of hotel reservations, reviews, and great deals. Here are a few more you can throw into the mix:

Having a few of these hotel search engines bookmarked helps you to cross-check the best deals and plan your trip with low overheads. Where are you planning to travel to next? Do you use any of these hotel search engines, or do you depend on your travel agent?

How to Get the Lowest Rate on Your Hotel Room

“The traveler who can do the most research wins,” says Brooke Ferencsik, director of communications at TripAdvisor.

For many trips, the lodging accommodations tend to be a major budget eater, and finding the best hotel price depends on the destination, season and hotel availability.

Even though the experts say the best time to book your flight for domestic travel is 21 to 35 days before you depart, if you’re comfortable with a hotel rate, no matter how far out you are from your travel dates, book it, recommends Maria Katime, spokesperson for KAYAK. “Hotel rates are not as volatile as airfare.”

To help reduce hotel costs to make your summer vacation more affordable, experts offer the following tips:

Know when to look. As a general rule, hotel rates drop closer to check-in date, says Sarah Keeling, director of public relations at Expedia, but there are risks for waiting until the last minute.

“You may be forced into taking the room with the single queen bed for your family of four.” She suggests booking your hotel 14 to 21 days prior to your travel dates.

There are always exceptions to the rule. Hotel rates in Orlando and Las Vegas tend to start dropping between three months or 30 days ahead of arrival dates, according to Katime. Rates in New York tend to fall as the check-in nears, and rates in Chicago generally increase as the arrival date nears.

Look outside the epicenter “If you’re going to a very popular destination, the price decreases a significant amount if you go outside that attraction’s center,” says Katime. Research to make sure moving farther away from an attraction is still the most affordable option when adding a rental car or public transportation into the mix.

Be flexible with travel dates. Sometimes lengthening or shortening your trip by a day or two can bring the overall price down, says Gabe Saglie, senior editor at Travelzoo. High-demand markets may have different pricing for weekend and weekday stays.

Become loyal. “These days, hotels come up with very aggressive loyalty plans as a way to encourage people to visit again and again,” says Saglie. Members can benefit from amenities and upgrades, which can be a good value boost.

It’s not all about hotels. “[Vacation rentals] can often provide significant savings for families and larger groups traveling for a week or longer,” says Ferencsik. These properties have larger common areas, multiple bedrooms and more living space. If booking two hotel rooms, a vacation rental can save you up to 65%, according to TripAdvisor. “It’s the comforts of a home away from home but at a cool vacation destination,” says Ferencsik. They also come equipped with a kitchen, which could bring more savings from not having to eat out every night.

Bed and breakfasts can also bring significant savings, says Ferencsik, and most also have the great benefit of a complimentary breakfast, afternoon snack or happy hour. “B Bs are a fun option for travelers who like to socialize with other travelers—you can meet the other guests at breakfast and happy hours.”

Look off-season. “Seasonality is very big” when it comes to prices, says Saglie. “If you want to go to a luxury hotel in the Caribbean, it’ll cost you a lot more if you go in February than if you go in June.” Choose destinations having a natural slowdown in travel—consider the Caribbean, Mexico or a ski destination in the summer. “Dealing with a little bit of heat can be a great way to save money,” Saglie says. In the winter, London hotels are much cheaper than they are in July or August.

Choose your day wisely. Popular business travel destinations, like New York City or Chicago, may have lower rates on weekends while a leisure destination, like Los Angeles or Miami, may be more affordable during the week, says Saglie. Except for holidays, family-friendly destinations might have greater available and lower pricing during the week when kids are in school.

Consider waiting until the last minute. Booking your hotel in advance gives peace of mind but might not be great for your wallet. A last-minute booking can have significant discounts, according to Saglie.

“Mobile apps do a great job of pulling together last-minute deals in the area surrounding you,” says Courtney Scott. Travelocity’s senior editor.

But be warned: Availability does dwindle the closer you get to your travel dates. Experts caution against booking last minute if you’re traveling with a family. Although booking last minute can save you 30% to 40% on a hotel, you won’t be able to plan ahead and won’t have the stability that a package deal offers.

Look for renovated hotels. “During and right after renovations, hotels usually offer some great discounts,” says Saglie.

Bid on your hotel. Websites like Priceline.com or topsecrethotels.com claim to get users up to 45% off the published rate of a hotel but you won’t know the hotel until after it’s booked. This could work when you’ve already booked flights or are taking the train to your destination, says Scott. “If you can be adventurous and spontaneous, this is a great way to save.”

Book package deals. “The package concept may be a better deal because vacation packages providers can better negotiate room rates than the average consumer,” says Saglie. Occasionally you can find cheaper hotel rates without booking a package but for the most part, packages are more economical.

“When you bundle them together, hotels will release their deepest discounts,” says Scott. You can save up to $525 on average for a five-day trip. Most websites do the calculation so you can see the actual savings from bundling your hotel and flight versus booking them separately.

#how to get the best hotel deals

#

While even cars have gone the way of reliable sticker prices, hotel accommodations remain a haggler’s game, with arcane and confusing rules and terminology that seem aimed to sneak dollars out of your pocket even when you think you’re making out well. Take the term “corporate rate,” for instance. Corporate employees travel a lot; they must get a good rate, right? Well, some of them do, but probably not the ones who ask for the corporate rate.

Following are some tactics for getting the best hotel rates any time you travel. Your mileage may vary, and some hotels are more flexible than others, but these 15 tricks should keep you on the winning side of the bargaining table.

1. Ask for a lower rate.
This sounds simple, even doomed, but very often works like a charm. Ask whether the hotel is currently running any promotions or packages, and then see if any of the following special rates might apply: AAA, senior, family, hotel membership, weekend, government discount, frequent flier, convention, shareholder or corporate. Hotels sometimes even have what is called a “fallback” rate for travelers who are resisting the quoted rate.

2. Shop around online.
For the latest hotel bargains in locations around the world, be sure to check our discount hotel deals daily. In addition, check the Web sites of your favorite hotel chains; often they will run promotions exclusively for Web bookings.

Hotel discount reservation services like Hotels.com can also help you save considerably on hotel rates, as can general travel booking sites like Expedia and Travelocity. Note, however, that these sites may charge booking fees, so often your best strategy is to shop around to find the lowest rate and then call the hotel directly to see if they can match it.

You may also want to check aggregator sites like Kayak or Mobissimo, which search a wide range of hotel chains and travel sites, and then send you directly to the provider for booking.

3. Book by price, not by property.
If you care less about a specific hotel than getting the cheapest deal, you may want to consider choosing your own price on Priceline or shopping the anonymous (but deeply discounted) hotel inventory on Hotwire. On these sites you often won’t know which hotel you’re staying at until it’s booked, but you can request the general location and quality (three-star, four-star, etc.) — and you could save a significant amount of money over other booking sites.

4. Call the hotel directly.
Many times specials are offered at the hotel that can’t be submitted through the 1-800 central reservations system. The 800 agents have no direct access to room availability, and are often not authorized to negotiate. Hotel agents are generally more in touch with availability and specials, and are therefore more flexible with rates.

Many chains allot only a select number of rooms to the central reservations system, so 800 agents may even tell you a hotel is sold out when in fact the hotel is discounting rooms because of low booking rates!

5. Be flexible with your dates.
Hotel rates can vary widely based on the time of year and the time of week when you travel. If you’re staying at a property that serves mostly business travelers, you may find great weekend deals, while B & B’s and other leisure properties tend to have lower rates midweek. On a broader scale, know when the peak seasons to visit your destination are — such as wintertime in the Caribbean or summertime in Europe. Rates will be sky-high at those times of year, so scheduling your trip for a less popular travel time could save you big bucks on your hotel.

6. Take advantage of last-minute specials.
If your travel plans are flexible, you could get a great rate by waiting to book your hotel until the last minute. Hotel managers are often willing to lower their rates to fill their last remaining rooms.

7. Consider a package deal.
If you’re looking for both airfare and hotels, shop around and see if it’s worth booking the two together as a package deal. You may not have as many hotel choices as you would if you were booking your lodging separately, but the discounts could be worth the lack of flexibility.

8. Consider a private sale.
Private sale sites Jetsetter.com and TabletHotels.com/privatesale/ offer exclusive deals on hotels and resorts, but you must be a member to access them, and most sales don’t last very long. If you’re open-minded about where you want to go and when, these sites can help you land deep discounts at upscale properties.

9. Look beyond the big hotels.
If you’re seeing high rates at big chain hotels, consider some alternatives. These could include bed and breakfasts. vacation rentals. hostels or independently owned small hotels — most of which can’t be found on big booking engines. For advice on how to research these, see our guide to finding hidden hotels .

10. Know the full cost.
You may think you’ve found a great deal, but keep in mind that the base rate isn’t the only thing that will determine your total bill. Be sure to ask what taxes, resort fees, parking costs, energy surcharges, and other odds and ends will apply to your final tally. Even if one hotel has a lower base rate, it may end up being a more expensive option once all the extras are added in. For more information, see Hidden Hotel Fees .

11. Keep an eye on your credit card statements.
Occasionally, buried in all that junk stuffed in with your credit card statement are vouchers or guarantees for good hotel rates offered in conjunction with your credit card company. Typically, you have to request a specific rate code, included in the “literature,” and reserve and pay for the room with that particular credit card (or one issued by the same bank or company).

12. Use coupon and voucher books.
The number of discount coupon and voucher companies, both in print and on the Internet, is almost mind-boggling. Everywhere you look, you can tear off, cut out, download, print out or merely mention a discount coupon rate, and you can save on just about every aspect of travel. Do a Web search for “coupons” for your destination or hotel chain for some links to local and online coupon distributors.

In the midst of this abundance, one discount book stands head and shoulders above the rest: Entertainment Books published by Entertainment Publications. The great majority of discounts available come in at half price, whether they’re two-for-one meals or movies, or straight 50 percent discounts on hotel rooms. The company publishes books annually for dozens of major U.S. and Canadian destinations. They can be purchased online for $25 to $50.

13. Follow up.
Once you’ve booked your hotel, don’t just rest on your laurels. Call back or check online in another month or so and see whether rates have gone down. If they have, cancel your booking and rebook your stay at the lower rate. (Read the hotel’s cancellation policy carefully before doing so to make sure you won’t have to pay any penalties.)

14. Use your points.
Can’t find the rate you want? Try paying with points instead. If you belong to a hotel’s loyalty program and have accumulated enough reward points, you can often use them to pay for your room (or for an upgrade to a better class of room).

15. Leave your bags in the car.
Planning to negotiate when you arrive? Don’t haul a huge piece of luggage into the lobby and then tell the agent that you’d just as soon go elsewhere if they can’t bring their rates down. You’ll look tired, hassled, sick of lugging bags and, to a shrewd hotel clerk, ready to pay handsomely to unpack that suitcase.

Metal Hips Fail Faster, Raise Other Health Concerns

For many people with severe hip arthritis, total joint replacement brings pain relief and improved mobility for the life of the implant typically 15 years or more. But a new study shows that some metal-on-metal implants are likely to fail much sooner, especially in women. The study adds to a growing list of problems linked to metal-on-metal implants, including bone and tissue destruction and high levels of metal ions in the blood.

For the study, published online in 2012 in The Lancet, researchers used data from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales the world s largest joint replacement registry to track more than 400,000 patients who underwent primary hip replacement from 2003 to 2011. Of these, 31,171 received metal-on-metal implants hips with a ball and cup made of a cobalt and chromium alloy.

Compared with implants made of other materials, all-metal joints had a substantially higher overall failure rate. After five years, 6.2 percent of metal-on-metal hips had failed, whereas only 3.2 percent of ceramic hips and 1.7 percent of metal-on-plastic implants had. Failure rates were highest for younger women and for implants with larger heads 36 millimeters or more in both men and women. The head is the ball of the device that fits into the hip socket.

Joel Buchalter, MD, a clinical assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at New York University Medical Center, explains that manufacturers developed metal-on-metal implants with larger heads to prevent the problems that lead to early failure.

Hip replacements can fail for several reasons, but the most common is loosening, in which components detach from the bone. Friction from normal wear produces debris that causes inflammation in the tissues around the joint. Over time, bone erodes and the implant loosens, leading to pain and decreased function. Implants can also dislocate meaning the metal ball slips out of the socket often within the first few weeks after hip replacement. Failed hips must be removed and replaced in a complex revision surgery. This operation is often less successful than the original hip replacement because bone loss makes the new implant harder to anchor.

Dr. Buchalter says the metal-on-metal devices were targeted at active younger adults who needed a hip that lasted decades. In mechanical models, metal-on-metal implants with large-diameter heads showed extremely low wear and better lubrication, so they seemed an excellent solution, he says.

The Lancet study authors thought so, too, until they looked at the data.

We were surprised by the results, as studies suggest that larger heads should have lower wear and a lower risk of dislocation. However, we have seen an increase in revisions for pain and loosening, particularly in women, says Alison Smith, a study author and statistician at the University of Bristol in the U.K.

Depending on patient age and implant head size, the revision rate for all-metal hips is three to four times higher in women and two to three times higher in men compared with other implants.

Ashley Blom, MD, a study author and professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Bristol, suggests that hip anatomy or the presence of osteoporosis (which is more common in women) might account for the greater number of problems in women. He adds that several small studies show women also are more sensitive to the metal ions shed by the implants.

Why all-metal hips fail more often still isn t entirely clear, and the British researchers conclude that more research is needed. We do not fully understand the mechanism of failure of these hips, they say. We need more studies to shed some light on this.

In 2010, device maker DePuy recalled its articular surface replacement hips, or ASR hips, after they failed in about 12 percent of patients who received them. The recalled ASR devices were excluded from the current study.

Metal-on-metal implants have raised other concerns in addition to early failure rates, including potential harm from cobalt and chromium ions released into the bloodstream when metal parts rub together. In February, the journal BMJ published results of a comprehensive investigation of metal implants. Among other findings, investigators concluded that systemic metal ions can cause cardiovascular problems and may damage DNA.

However, Art Sedrakyan, MD, an associate professor at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, points out that no good studies of the short- and long-term effects of ions exist. We don t know what the consequences of even moderately elevated ion levels might be over time, and there is no clear evidence that they lead to cancer or cardiomyopathy or other complications. We just don t know, he says.

Dr. Sedrakyan, an authority on comparative effectiveness research, adds that in May 2011, the FDA ordered 21 makers of metal-on-metal hip implants to provide safety studies, including information on metal ion levels. Once that data is available and independent experts can analyze it, we can make better decisions, he says.

David Lewallen, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. and board chairman of the newly launched American Joint Replacement Registry (a national center for data collection and research on total hip and knee replacements), says it s also important to put current findings in context.

Hip replacement is one of the most successful surgeries in the history of medicine, and the improvements it makes in the lives of patients are dramatic, he says. The majority of people, including those with all-metal hips, do extremely well, he adds.

Still, many physicians and leading orthopaedic institutions, such as Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and the Mayo Clinic, have halted or scaled back use of all-metal implants.

But what about the 500,000 Americans who already have metal hips? Unlike Britain, no formal guidelines or protocols exist in the United States for dealing with metal-on-metal implants, so doctors are developing their own.

Dr. Lewallen urges all hip replacement patients to see their doctors at regular intervals, even if they have no symptoms. And he recommends surveillance of metal ion levels for patients with metal-on-metal implants, especially if they have kidney disease or other health problems. Ultimately, he says, care should be individualized to the needs of each patient.

Nicolas Noiseux, MD, an assistant professor of orthopaedics at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, also endorses a patient-specific approach.

I see patients who have large-head metal implants once a year, and at the slightest complaint, I suggest testing for blood cobalt and chromium. If the numbers are seven parts per billion or above, I follow patients more closely than a yearly interval and may recommend further imaging, such as an MRI, to assess fluid accumulation around the joint. And certainly in that case, or in the face of metal ions above seven parts per billion, some patients have elected to have [the implant removed], he explains.

Dr. Buchalter endorses a similar program for patients with metal hips, but believes annual monitoring for the life of the implant now required in Britain is essential. He says regular blood tests and MRIs can alert doctors and patients to impending implant failure.

Dr. Sedrakyan agrees that all options should be discussed in order to decide the best course for each patient. But, he says, as more information accumulates, we will be able to frame these recommendations based on better evidence.

As for the future, Dr. Lewallen says metal hips may even have a silver lining. Patients are now aware that being seen regularly is crucial, and that awareness may help prevent more serious problems, he says.

He adds that concerns about metal implants have helped increase interest in an American Joint Replacement Registry. Until recently, the United States lacked a large, nationwide registry to track long-term outcomes of joint replacments. Dr. Lewallen says that by uncovering problems sooner, registry data should improve patient safety and overall quality of care.

Baby boom hits Ireland as we top the European birth rate

Europe birth rate

July 11 2015 2:30 AM

Ireland is in the midst of a full-blown population boom boasting the EU’s top birth rate and second-lowest death rate.

There was 14.4 babies born per 1,000 residents in the State last year, easily eclipsing the EU average of 10.1.

In stark contrast, Ireland also recorded one of Europe’s lowest death rates at 6.4pc per 1,000 residents – some distance behind the EU average of 9.7pc.

The new figures, released by the EU’s statistical office Eurostat, now puts Ireland’s population at 4.6 million.

Given the nation’s birth and death rates, it means Ireland saw a natural change in population of +8.1pc in 2014.

Housing and childcare sectors are already struggling under the weight of young families, while at the other end of the scale the low death rate means the pensions bill is spiralling.

Experts warned that childcare in the country was not fit for purpose, given the nation’s growing young population.

Early Childhood Ireland CEO Teresa Heeney has said that while Ireland’s high birth rate is the “envy of our European neighbours”, she warned that the sector is facing a crisis.

“Our current level spending in the sector is just 0.2pc of GDP. This is far short of where we need to be and we must move towards 0.7pc which is closer to the European average, and ultimately to 1pc,” she said.

“This Government must make choices in the next Budget which will have a long- lasting impact on Irish children, families and early childhood educators.

“The lack of a clear plan today is leading to duplication and poor sustainability in a childcare sector that is overstretched and not invested in properly.”

Fianna F il spokesman for children Robert Troy has also expressed concerns in relation to Ireland’s early childhood care infrastructure.

“While the increase in births is very welcome, we must asses our current systems. The structures we have in place are just not fit for purpose.”

The total population of the EU ballooned by almost two million people last year. As a whole, the population grew from 506.9 to 508 million.

Germany continues to be a European powerhouse with some 81.2 million residents accounting for 16pc of the total.

France takes the second spot with 13pc of the population or 66.4 million residents.

The UK, which is home to some 64.8 million people, makes up 12.9pc.

During 2014, 5.1 million babies were born, 33,000 up on the previous year. It appears Europeans are now living longer with the number of deaths across Europe down by 46,000 to 4.9 million.

HBO: Rate of domestic violence in MMA is twice that of general population

“I couldn’t catch my breath. I started convulsing. At that point, it felt like I was going to die.”

Christy Mack held back tears as she voiced those harrowing words on HBO’s critically acclaimed ‘Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.’ She recounted the disturbing tale of her ex-boyfriend, former UFC and Bellator fighter Jon Koppenhaver, as he allegedly brutally beat her to the point of convulsions.

As she lay cowering in the corner, Mack inched closer to death.

The former adult actress’ terrifying tale of near-fatal abuse was the centerpiece for the HBO segment, where they investigated the disproportional rate of domestic violence in Mixed Martial Arts. It was Mack’s first on-camera interview since the incident, which took place in 2014. However, it was far from the only card up HBO’s sleeve, as they launched a detailed report, which emphasized the dramatically disproportional rate of domestic violence in MMA in comparison to both the National Football League and the national average in the United States.

According to the segment, the volume of domestic violence arrests that included MMA fighters was more than double that of the average national rate in the U.S. Using public records as their main resource, Real Sports determined that the national rate of domestic violence arrests is around 360 per 100,000 men. On the same chart, they contrasted that against NFL players, which found 210 arrests per 100,000, while MMA saw a staggering rise to 750.

It’s hard to see numbers like this and not conclude that there’s a real problem here. pic.twitter.com/0PtAmNCs14

Koppenhaver, just one of several offenders mentioned in the segment, is potentially facing life in prison for 34 felony charges, including attempted sexual assault and strangulation. During his first hearing, Koppenhaver laughed during Mack’s retelling of the alleged assault, clearly lacking any form of remorse.

“I shudder to think what would have happened had she not escaped,” the judge said after seeing photos of Mack’s injuries.

Added below are the graphic photos and story about what happened pic.twitter.com/U1T1X2OP4d

Several other notable MMA fighters were mentioned by name during the segment, several of whom still remained in the UFC. Former title challenger Anthony Johnson was suspended by the promotion following his latest domestic violence accusations. Johnson has been accused of DV on three occasions by three separate women, one of which included a no contest plea.

This was Johnson’s response to the segment:

Another mentioned example was Thiago Silva. who was a UFC fighter when he took part in a standoff with a SWAT team that stemmed from domestic violence. After UFC President Dana White stated that Silva would “never” fight for the UFC again, he was welcomed back with open arms when the charges were dropped. Yet his stint would only last two weeks, as his estranged wife would release several videos showing his apparent cocaine use and several signs of domestic assault with a firearm.

Prior to the release of the videos, Silva delved into the scandal on The MMA Hour and stated that he “learnt never to trust girls.” Then, with a surprisingly unconcerned expression, added, “people will forget. They always do.”

One of the names that was not mentioned in the segment, likely because it was only recently uncovered, is Travis Browne. who was accused of assault by his wife Jenna Webb. The UFC removed him from International Fight Week as a response to the reports while they underwent an ‘investigation.’

Overall, the HBO segment on domestic violence in MMA was a chilling reminder of the dark underbelly of the sport. With little accountability and even fewer regulations barring previous offenders, it becomes all too easy for a violent sport to harbor even more violent people.

“There’s no requirement, really,” Jason Miller revealed when asked about MMA promotions hiring him following domestic violence charges. “You don’t get vetted. ‘Hey, are you willing to fight, can you pass this CAT scan? Do you have AIDS or hepatitis?’ No? OK, you’re in.'”

Bisping: I heard Liddell is ‘pissed’ at UFC, may join Bellator Michael Bisping says he heard Chuck Liddell is unhappy after losing a lucrative job with the UFC.

  • Floyd-Conor in August? Mayweather reserves MGM Grand for 26th Mayweather Promotions has reserved the MGM Grand for August, could that be for Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor?

  • ‘Butterbean’: I don’t see a US commission approving Floyd-Conor Boxing and kickboxing legend Butterbean doesn’t think Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor will get sanctioned.

  • UFC Auckland: Fights to make All the best, most interesting, and undoubtedly coolest fights that the UFC can book, following their most recent event in Auckland, New, Zealand.

  • Manuwa: ‘Fat wrestler’ Cormier will lose to Jon Jones again Jimi Manuwa takes aim at Daniel Cormier on The MMA Hour.

Find rate of return on whole life insurance

When it comes to sorting the good whole life insurance policies from the bad, consumers focus on one number alone how much money their policy will generate.

To project how much money your policy will yield 10, 20 or even 30 years from now, insurance companies calculate the policy s expected yearly growth. Better known as the internal rate of return, your IRR will dramatically change the longer you own the policy and will be a crucial factor for deciding whether it s smarter to hold on to your policy or shop around for a new one.

Unfortunately, figuring out how much money your whole life policy is yielding now and what it will yield in the future is far more difficult than simply reading your policy s fine print. Here are some tips for determining how much cash your cash value policy is really providing.

    Don t do it alone

Figuring out the rate of return on your whole life policy is almost impossible for consumers to do without help from the pros, says Tony Steuer, a life insurance analyst in Alameda, Calif. and author of Questions and Answers on Life Insurance.

There are tons of moving parts to a lot of life insurance contracts … (and) insurance companies usually don t disclose certain information to their customers, like if they ve had a change in mortality rates, he says.

Steuer adds that the method for calculating the rate of return on whole life insurance policies varies from company to company. While all companies factor in certain variables including how long you ve owned the policy, dividends (if applicable) and mortality charges, how much each factor counts for varies significantly between insurance providers and policies.

    Approach projections with caution

While whole life providers frequently won t disclose how your rate of return is calculated, they will offer illustrations of how your policy is projected to perform in the future. All illustrations should include information on the costs of the policy, how much you ve paid, your current death benefit and the cash surrender value you would get for canceling the policy today. It should also include future predictions on how your policy should perform five, 10 and 20 years down the road. The bad news is that insurance illustrations are lengthy, frequently riddled with tough-to-understand industry jargon and could include predictions so outrageously optimistic, there s no way your policy will actually reach them.

(Insurance illustrations) include a guaranteed column, says Kelly O Connor, managing agent with Mountain Financial, LLC, a wealth management group in Greenwood Village, Colo. This explains what the policy is guaranteed to look like over a certain time frame. (Consumers) can trust that guaranteed piece of the illustration.

In certain whole life contracts, O Connor says that consumers can get an idea of how close other projections are by examining the company s dividend payout history.

All mutual insurance companies publish their dividend history, so if you look back and see that they ve never been under 5.5 or 5.25 (percent dividends) for the last 100 years, there s a pretty good chance that that will continue, he says.

    Look ahead

Cash value life insurance policies are designed to be long-term investments, not short-term ways to make a quick buck, says Glenn Daily, a Certified Financial Planner and fee-only insurance consultant based in New York City. To understand the rate of return for your policy, check out how the policy is projected to perform over the next few decades.

If you re thinking of buying a new policy, You need to see the average annual and year-by-year rate of return for at least the first 20 years, says Daily. Those who already own policies should focus on the average annual and year-by-year rates of return for the next five to 10 years. By examining how their whole life policy is performing on a yearly basis, consumers get a firm idea of what kind of performance they can expect in the near future.

Consumers should know that the year-by-year rate of return will substantially differ from the rate of return generated over several years, says James H. Hunt, a life insurance actuary for the Consumer Federation of America and former insurance commissioner of Vermont.

It may take as long as 10 years for the average annual rate of return on a cash value life insurance policy to turn positive, mainly due to heavy first year commissions and related sales expenses, he says.

When comparing policies or deciding if it s worthwhile to stick with the one you have, Hunt recommends hiring a third-party insurance analyst to evaluate whether a whole life policy makes sense in the long haul.

It s impossible to know what you re getting into without hiring an expert, he says.

What is oscilloscope? Definition from #saving #rate #definition

    #

    oscilloscope

An oscilloscope is a laboratory instrument commonly used to display and analyze the waveform of electronic signals. In effect, the device draws a graph of the instantaneous signal voltage as a function of time.

A typical oscilloscope can display alternating current (AC ) or pulsating direct current (DC) waveforms having a frequency as low as approximately 1 hertz (Hz ) or as high as several megahertz (MHz ). High-end oscilloscopes can display signals having frequencies up to several hundred gigahertz (GHz ). The display is broken up into so-called horizontal divisions (hor div) and vertical divisions (vert div). Time is displayed from left to right on the horizontal scale. Instantaneous voltage appears on the vertical scale, with positive values going upward and negative values going downward.

The oldest form of oscilloscope, still used in some labs today, is known as the cathode-ray oscilloscope. It produces an image by causing a focused electron beam to travel, or sweep, in patterns across the face of a cathode ray tube (CRT ). More modern oscilloscopes electronically replicate the action of the CRT using a liquid crystal display (liquid crystal display ) similar to those found on notebook computers. The most sophisticated oscilloscopes employ computers to process and display waveforms. These computers can use any type of display, including CRT, LCD, and gas plasma.

In any oscilloscope, the horizontal sweep is measured in seconds per division (s/div), milliseconds per division (ms/div), microseconds per division (s/div), or nanoseconds per division (ns/div). The vertical deflection is measured in volts per division (V/div), millivolts per division (mV/div), or microvolts per division (?V/div). Virtually all oscilloscopes have adjustable horizontal sweep and vertical deflection settings.

The illustration shows two common waveforms as they might appear when displayed on an oscilloscope screen. The signal on the top is a sine wave ; the signal on the bottom is a ramp wave. It is apparent from this display that both signals have the same, or nearly the same, frequency. They also have approximately the same peak-to-peak amplitude. Suppose the horizontal sweep rate in this instance is 1 s/div. Then these waves both complete a full cycle every 2 s, so their frequencies are both approximately 0.5 MHz or 500 kilohertz (kHz ). If the vertical deflection is set for, say, 0.5 mV/div, then these waves both have peak-to-peak amplitudes of approximately 2 mV.

These days, typical high-end oscilloscopes are digital devices. They connect to personal computers and use their displays. Although these machines no longer employ scanning electron beams to generate images of waveforms in the manner of the old cathode-ray scope, the basic principle is the same. Software controls the sweep rate, vertical deflection, and a host of other features which can include:

    • Storage of waveforms for future reference and comparison
    • Display of several waveforms simultaneously
    • Spectral analysis
    • Portability
    • Battery power option
    • Usability with all popular operating platforms
    • Zoom-in and zoom-out
    • Multi-color displays

Insurers Sending – Consent to Rate – Letters to North Carolina Homeowners

Insurers Sending Consent to Rate Letters to North Carolina Homeowners

    January 27, 2015

North Carolina homeowners are being told to pay higher insurance premiums or risk losing their coverage under a law that allows companies to pay more than the state has approved.

The StarNews of Wilmington reported insurance companies are sending consent to rate letters under which homeowners agree to a higher rate or risk losing their coverage.

Sen. Michael Lee, R-New Hanover, a member of the Senate Insurance Committee said legislators need to look at the consent to rate law. It s a big concern for a lot of folks in our area, Lee said.

The state insurance commissioner last month ruled against any increase in homeowners rates. The N.C. Rate Bureau, which represents insurers, sought an average 25.6 percent increase statewide and up to 35 percent in parts of the Wilmington area.

Terry Wilkerson of Wilmington said his insurer, Travelers, gave him 10 days to decide whether to accept an increase of more than 120 percent. Travelers had provided his coverage for 15 years, he said.

Our use of consent to rate is fully compliant with North Carolina law, Travelers said in a statement. There are instances when we charge more than the state s approved rate to reflect the risks customers are facing and to keep up with the increasing costs to repair, replace and rebuild property.

A Travelers spokesman also said that the proposed increase for Wilkerson was not typical.

Insurance companies are within their rights under North Carolina law, said Kerry Hall, spokeswoman for the state Department of Insurance. Insurance companies can increase premiums by up to 250 percent if the customer agrees, she said.

Rep. Susi Hamilton, D-New Hanover, said she recommended that people who receive a consent to rate letter contact the Insurance Department and look into more customer-friendly insurers.

    Fixed Deposit Highlights:

    • Most banks offer FDs for tenure of 7 Days to 10 Years.
    • The Ratnakar Bank IDBI Bank do offer fixed deposits up to 20 years too .
    • For very short Term Deposits the interest rate is similar to that of Savings Account and so you should not worry about FD. Also Interest up to Rs 10,000 in Saving Account is Tax free .
    • Most banks compound interest quarterly
    • Banks offer Loan/Overdraft against the amount available in Fixed Deposit. The interest is generally 0.5% to 1% more than that offered to FD.
    • TDS (Tax deduction at source) at the rate of 10% is deducted, if the interest income is more than Rs 10,000 in financial year per bank. You can fill Form15G/H
    • You can fill Form15G/H if you want to avoid TDS .

For comparing the best interest rates on fixed deposits over different duration of investment, we have it divided into following 5 slabs:

    • FD for Less than 1 Year
    • FD for 1 to 2 years
    • FD for 2 to 5 Years
    • FD for 5 to 10 years
    • FD for More than 10 years

Interest Rate (Senior Citizens) for FD Less than 1 Year:

The highest interest rate is offered by The Ratnakar Bank (241 days to 364 days) at 7.60% .

    Shankar Iyer says:

I suppose there has to be an extensive study before stats are pur out esp. with reference to Ratnakar Bank. If you could check Varacha Bank, Surat Peoples Bank, Sutex Bank, Sarvoday Coop Bank ( all coop banks in Surrat) whose financials are available and NPAs are available for view. These give better returns than Ratnakar. Also, see Gujarat Rajya Karmachari Coop Bank. Investments upto Rs. 1 lac is insured. Also, the investor needs to be educated on the maneouveing of applicant names while opening accounts with coop banks, so that only the benefit of sr citizen is obtained, but the deposits are also insured.

I agree with your views and you can use various combinations of names of account holders to get benefit of deposit insurance. Historically co-operative banks have been riskier and so they offer higher interest rate. Also claiming insurance in case of default is not easy and it may take time. So it s individuals call weather to take risk for slightly higher interest rates.

Chamberlain College of Nursing Requirements for Admission

What are Chamberlain College of Nursing’s admission requirements? While there are a lot of pieces that go into a college application, you should focus on only a few critical things:

    • GPA requirements
    • Testing requirements, including SAT and ACT requirements
    • Application requirements

In this guide we’ll cover what you need to get into Chamberlain College of Nursing and build a strong application.

    School location: St. Louis, MO

    Admissions Rate

If you want to get in, the first thing to look at is the acceptance rate. This tells you how competitive the school is and how serious their requirements are.

Unfortunately, we could not find an acceptance rate for Chamberlain College of Nursing. We recommend that you contact the school’s admission office for more information.

Chamberlain College of Nursing GPA Requirements

Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school’s average GPA for its current students.

    Average GPA

Chamberlain College of Nursing did not report their average GPA for incoming students, and we could not calculate an expected average GPA. We recommend that you do a quick Google search to see if they’ve released new information.

    SAT and ACT Requirements

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Most schools require the SAT or ACT, and many also require SAT subject tests.

You must take either the SAT or ACT to submit an application to Chamberlain College of Nursing. More importantly, you need to do well to have a strong application.

    SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Both the SAT and ACT have a Writing section that includes an essay.

Chamberlain College of Nursing hasn’t reported their stance on SAT/ACT Writing, but most likely they consider it to be optional. Thus you don’t need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you’re applying to may require it.

    SAT Subject Test Requirements

Schools vary in their SAT subject test requirements. Typically, selective schools tend to require them, while most schools in the country do not.

We did not find information that Chamberlain College of Nursing requires SAT subject tests, and so most likely it does not. At least 6 months before applying, you should still doublecheck just to make sure, so you have enough time to take the test.

    Final Admissions Verdict

We just don’t have that much information about this school. We don’t know their admissions rate, their average SAT/ACT scores, or much about what they’re looking for in an applicant. If you’re interested in this school, we highly recommend you contact their admissions office directly.

    Application Requirements

Every school requires an application with the bare essentials – high school transcript and GPA, application form, and other core information. Many schools, as explained above, also require SAT and ACT scores, as well as letters of recommendation, application essays, and interviews. We’ll cover the exact requirements of Chamberlain College of Nursing here.

    Interest Rate Sensitivity

    What is ‘Interest Rate Sensitivity’

Interest rate sensitivity is a measure of how much the price of a fixed-income asset will fluctuate as a result of changes in the interest rate environment. Securities that are more sensitive have greater price fluctuations than those with less sensitivity. This type of sensitivity must be taken into account when selecting a bond or other fixed-income instrument the investor may sell in the secondary market.

    BREAKING DOWN ‘Interest Rate Sensitivity’

Generally, the longer the maturity of the asset, the more sensitive the asset to changes in interest rates. Changes in interest rates are watched closely by bond and fixed-income traders, as the resulting price fluctuations affect the overall yield of the securities. Investors who understand the concept of duration can immunize their fixed-income portfolios to changes in short-term interest rates.

Inverse Correlation between Fixed Income and Rates

Fixed-income securities and interest rates are inversely correlated. Therefore, as interest rates rise, prices of fixed-income securities tend to fall. One way to determine how interest rates affect a fixed-income security’s portfolio is to determine the duration. The higher a bond or bond fund’s duration, the more sensitive the bond or bond fund to changes in interest rates. The duration of fixed-income securities gives investors an idea of the sensitivity to potential interest rate changes. Duration is a good measure of interest rate sensitivity because the calculation includes multiple bond characteristics, such as coupon payments and maturity.

    Types of Duration Measurements

There are four widely used duration measurements to determine a fixed-income security’s interest rate sensitivity: the Macaulay duration, modified duration, effective duration and key rate duration. To calculate the Macaulay duration, the time to maturity, number of cash flows, required yield, cash flow payment, par value and bond price must be known. The modified duration is a modified calculation of the Macaulay duration. It determines how much the duration would change for each percentage point change in the yield. The effective duration is used to calculate the duration of bonds with embedded options. It determines the approximate price decline for a bond if interest rates rise instantaneously by 1%. The key rate duration determines a fixed-income security’s or fixed-income portfolio’s duration at a specific maturity on the yield curve.

One widely used measure to determine the interest rate sensitivity is the effective duration. For example, assume a bond fund holds 100 bonds with an average duration of nine years and an average effective duration of 11 years. Therefore, if interest rates rise instantaneously by 1%, the bond fund is expected to lose 11% based on its effective duration.

Breathing Rate Heart Rates After Exercise

by MEG BRANNAGAN Last Updated: Feb 18, 2015

Meg Brannagan has worked as a registered nurse for more than 10 years, specializing in women’s and children’s health. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Cooling down after exercise restores your breathing and heart rate back to normal. Photo Credit Polka Dot Images/Polka Dot/Getty Images

Most people are familiar with how their bodies feel during exercise; the heart beats faster and it becomes harder to breathe. This is a response to increased work by the muscles and an escalating need for oxygen throughout the body. Once you have finished exercising, your breathing and heart rate slowly return to normal, and the more exercise you perform, the more efficient this system becomes.

    Restoration of Oxygen

Breathing rates remain elevated immediately following aerobic exercise. Rapid breathing continues to move oxygen through the lungs and ultimately, into the bloodstream and to the muscles. Although the muscles are not being used as extensively as they were during a workout, this increased breathing and heart rate prevents the buildup of carbon dioxide and restores the necessary oxygen that was depleted during exercise.

    Recovery Period

The time that it takes for your heart and your breathing to slow back down to their resting rates is known as the recovery period. Its length can vary among individuals, and you may have a slower recovery time compared with someone else. People who are trained athletes or who exercise consistently have faster recovery times than those who live sedentary lifestyles and who occasionally work out.

    Cooling Down

Following your exercise routine, a cool-down period is important to slowly bring your heart rate and breathing patterns back to normal. After working out, allow yourself at least five minutes to cool down, which includes slowly decreasing the intensity of your workout until you are ready to stop. You can follow this with stretches and range of motion exercises. Avoid stopping exercise completely until you have had sufficient time to cool down. The dramatic decrease in muscle activity can cause your blood pressure to drop, resulting in dizziness or lightheadedness.

    Long-Term Effects

When you exercise on a regularly, your heart becomes more efficient at pumping blood. Although your breathing and heart rates will increase during exercise, you may then have a slower heart rate afterward. Because your heart is a muscle, it becomes conditioned with regular activity and requires less effort to pump oxygenated blood. This is reflected both during and following exercise. Your heart rate will still increase while exercising, but not as sharply because the heart is strengthened; your breathing will intensify, but you may be less winded. Once your exercise routine is complete, breathing and heart rate will return to normal more quickly.

RA and Lung Disease: What You Need to Know

Besides the joints, the inflammatory process that underlies rheumatoid arthritis (RA) also affects other parts of the body, including lungs, skin, eyes, digestive system, heart and blood vessels. RA-related lung complications are the most common extra-articular ( outside of the joints ) manifestations of RA and include pulmonary nodules (small growths in the lungs); pleural effusion (a buildup of fluid between the lung and chest wall); bronchiectasis (damage to the airways); and interstitial lung disease (ILD).

In fact, it is estimated that 1 in 10 people with rheumatoid arthritis will develop ILD over the course of their disease, making it as deadly among people with RA as congestive heart failure.

    What Is Interstitial Lung Disease?

Interstitial lung disease refers to a group of disorders characterized by inflammation and scarring of the lung tissue. In the case of RA-associated ILD, the scarring is caused when the over-active immune system attacks the lungs. When the scarring builds up over time, breathing becomes difficult, and patients may need lung transplants to regain function.

Risk Factors for Interstitial Lung Disease

The risk of developing lung disease is eight times higher in people with RA than in the general population. However, most people with RA are not affected. Risk factors for ILD include:

    • Smoking. People with RA who smoke are more likely to develop ILD.

Higher RA disease activity. High levels of rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptides (antiCCP) antibodies substances that are indicative of more active disease increase the risk for development of ILD.

Older age at diagnosis. People who are diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis after age 60 are more likely to develop ILD.

Male Gender. Men with RA have a two-to-three times higher risk of developing ILD than women.

Treatment with methotrexate and other DMARDs. Several DMARDs, including methotrexate, leflunomide and azathioprine, as well as biologics, particularly tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors, have been associated with RA-ILD, according to a literature review published in the April 2014 issue of Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism. But Dr. Teng Moua, a pulmonologist specializing in ILD at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. says the risk of methotrexate-induced lung injury is less than 1 percent and is reversible once the drug is stopped. According to Dr. Moua, the benefits of methotrexate far outweigh its risks. However, methotrexate is not recommended for people with existing ILD or RA-ILD by the American College of Rheumatology in their 2012 guidelines.

    Diagnosis of Interstitial Lung Disease

It is challenging to catch ILD early because it doesn t cause any specific symptoms. Once shortness of breath and dry cough develop, the disease has probably already progressed.

The diagnostic process includes a comprehensive clinical exam, X-rays and lung function tests. If there are risk factors for ILD or abnormal X-ray findings, your doctor will likely perform a high resolution CT.

    Treatment of Interstitial Lung Disease

Interstitial lung disease is hard to treat and has a high mortality rate. According to a 2010 study published in the journal Arthritis Rheumatism. once ILD was diagnosed, the average survival in patients with RA was 2.6 years.

People diagnosed with ILD in its early stages can be helped with medication such as corticosteroids and immunosuppressants and put on the waiting list for a lung transplant sooner. However, these treatments don t work for everyone. The best approach is to treat the underlying RA, although ILD may get worse despite well controlled arthritis.

Future Direction in Interstitial Lung Disease

Researchers say an important task for the medical community is to understand the mechanisms behind the development of ILD in people with RA. More detailed knowledge of these processes may one day open doors to better treatments.

Also needed are comprehensive guidelines for screening and diagnosing ILD in at-risk patients so they can be found and treated earlier.

How Can You Protect Your Lungs?

Don t smoke. Get flu and pneumonia vaccines (but always check with your doctor before getting any vaccinations). If you re taking immunosuppressant medications for your RA, you may be at a higher risk for illnesses like the flu and pneumonia, which may cause further lung-related complications. Have regular check-ups, so your doctor can monitor your lungs regularly. Tell your doctor if you have shortness of breath or dry cough right away.

Term deposits Vs savings accounts: What’s best for you?

Where should one stash their cash: savings accounts or term deposits?Andrea Sophocleous investigates.

    September 7, 2009

Saving hasn t always been fashionable. Before the global financial crisis began taking its toll on years of economic prosperity and consumer hedonism, excessive spending was a national in fact, global pastime.

Australia may have escaped the full grunt of the GFC, but the new mood of thrifty restraint appears to be hanging around a little longer. This is the perfect environment in which to begin saving for that next rainy day or home loan deposit. And with interest rates set to rise further, so could your savings.

Higher interest rates won t just increase your mortgage repayments ; on the plus side, they could also increase the interest you earn on your high interest savings account .

Savings accounts differ from day-to-day transactional accounts by being designed to help you save for a long-term goal. While you can access your everyday account for all your spending needs using debit cards, ATMs or the internet, any money you deposit in a savings account remains out of everyday reach and accrues interest on the growing balance.

You can make withdrawals whenever you like, but this would make a dent in the amount of interest you are paid. A more prudent option, therefore, is to make regular fortnightly or monthly deposits but no withdrawals.

A high interest savings account, however, is not your only option if you want to get serious about saving. If you are easily tempted into spending rather than saving, a term deposit may be a more suitable path for you to take.

Like savings accounts, term deposits are a low-risk, convenient way to earn higher interest on your money, but because you cannot withdraw any money during the life of your term deposit, your cash will remain safely tucked away, growing at a healthy rate.

Term deposits require a minimum opening balance usually at least $5,000 and can last anywhere from 30 days to five years. The rate is fixed for the duration of the term deposit, so you know exactly how much money you will end up with.

If you already have a few thousand dollars saved, a term deposit is a smart choice because you will start earning a decent amount of money in interest straight away. And if you won t need access to the money too soon, opting for a longer term makes more sense because depending on the term, you could score a higher interest rate.

For example, a 30-day term deposit with ING Direct will see you pocket interest at 3.25 percent p.a. while a two-year term deposit will deliver a more profitable 6.00 percent p.a. interest. So $10,000 will earn $26.71 in interest in 30 days, while after two years your nest egg will be up by $1,200.

As with all financial decisions, shop around for the term deposit that suits your needs. And ensure you won t need the money before your term expires otherwise you will have to wear the cost in hefty fees. If you are starting from scratch, a high interest savings account is a better option because most do not require a minimum opening balance.

The ING Direct Savings Maximiser account will dish out 4.75 percent p.a to new customers who signs up before November 30. This special introductory rate will last until 31 January 2010. Other generous high interest savings accounts include UBank s USaver account, which offers 5.11 percent p.a interest, and Westpac s Reward Saver with a 4.70 percent p.a rate.

There are hundreds of savings accounts to choose from, so researching and comparing interest rates and terms and conditions is essential.

Get auto loan quotes, then shop for a car

Check auto loan quotes before car buying

It s easy to get caught up in the excitement of buying a new car the fancy features and new-car smell are enticing. But consumers would be wiser to save the giddiness until after they compare auto loan quotes from several sources.

    Budget first

Financing a car purchase, whether new or used, should start with your budget. For negotiating purposes, it is better not to share with the dealer your ideal monthly auto loan payment. But you should know in advance what you can comfortably afford to spend on a monthly basis.

    Compare payment options

An online auto loan calculator can help you evaluate your choices, such as accepting a rebate from the dealer versus getting a reduced interest rate. It also allows you to estimate your car payments at different rates.

    Check your credit

Every year, you can get your complete credit report from all three major credit bureaus from AnnualCreditReport.com. Be sure to check yours before shopping for a car loan. Borrowers with the highest credit scores (you can be charged to see your score) should expect to be offered financing at the lowest interest rate. If you have excellent credit, you are in a better negotiating position.

Get the real value of your trade-in

If you are trading in your old car as part of the deal, first check out how much you could get for the car if you sold it through a used-car company such as CarMax.com. You also can check used car prices at such auto sites as Edmunds.com. Consider selling your car separately from the deal on the new car to see how that impacts your financing.

    Compare auto loan quotes

While one-stop shopping getting your new car and the financing from the dealer might be simpler, it can be more expensive than having a pre-approved car loan from another lender. Taking the time to evaluate auto loan quotes from independent lenders or your bank could save enough to spend that little extra on high-end accessories for your new ride.
