Using Resource Monitor to Troubleshoot Windows Performance Issues Part 1

Hello AskPerf! Leonard with the Performance Team here to discuss the Resource Monitor tool and we can use it to troubleshoot Windows Performance issues. In this blog, (the first of 2 on the subject of underutilized tools) I will discuss Resource Monitor which is available on both client and server versions of Windows starting with Windows Vista. Resource Monitor can be launched from the advanced tools tab in “Performance Information and Tools”, which is located in Control Panel. It can also be launched directly by running Resmon.exe .

Resource Monitor is a method of viewing Perfmon data. In fact, Resource Monitor is composed of Perfmon data combined with Windows Event Tracing data. You can view this tracing session by launching Perfmon, expanding Data Collector Sets, then select Event Tracing Sessions. There you will see a session called WDC.GUID (the GUID will vary). You can confirm this provides the data for Resource Monitor by observing that this trace is only running when Resource Monitor is running. Also, when it is running, you can view the channels that provide the data. Launching Resource Monitor will also launch a background process of Perfmon to act as a data source.

Resmon will show the window below on first launch. Each new launch will show the view as configured when Resmon was closed.

There are 5 tabs to choose from. The overview tab gives a summary of the other ones. The main tabs are CPU, Memory, Disk and Networking. In each of the tabs the windows on the left can be collapsed, expanded and resized. It is also possible to filter each view by the process, for example you are only interested in seeing the activity for Explorer, check the box for that process and the bottom window will only show the activity for that process. With no processes selected, the bottom windows will show activity for all active processes. The graphs on the right can be resized between small, medium and large, but I would recommend keeping them at the default large setting. The numeric scale for the graphs will change as activity changes.

My Favorite features

The memory tab has one unique graph that provides a quick view of what physical memory is being used for.

It is easy to see the total physical memory and what it is being actively used along with showing what is hardware reserved. Hardware Reserved represents physical memory addresses that have been reserved by hardware (generally busses like PCI or video cards) and is not available for Windows to use. It is usually small on x64 systems (except servers that do memory mirroring) but can be several 100MB up to 1GB on x32 systems. This means a 4GB x86 system can have only 3 GB of accessible memory.

The network tab is useful in that it not only shows the process that is generating activity, but the IP address it is connected to.

I recently had an issue where the system process was showing high CPU activity on a Windows 2008 Server. Two of the things that run in system are the SMB and SMB2 processes. I suspected that the high CPU was due to network activity and was a load based problem and not a problem with a process. To confirm that was the cause, I used Process Explorer to determine the threads that were running in the system process. I confirmed that there were 15+ SMB and SMB2 threads that were always the highest consumer of CPU. I then ran Resmon and looked at all of the IP addresses that were associated with system. We identified a management server that was receiving a lot of data. Based on that information, we were able to narrow down the problem to the request coming from that server. While the problem could have been identified using different tools, Resmon provided the most efficient way to identify the problem.

I hope this overview of Resource Monitor will make it one of the tools you use the next time you need to look at performance data or activity on the system.

1. I opened Resmon.exe from command windows with elevated access.
2. Clicked on Monitor in Menu, and clicked on Start monitoring.
And I get below error

[Window Title]
Performance Monitor
[Main Instruction]
When attempting to start Resource Monitor, the following system error occurred:
Access is denied.

What Is Human Resource Development?

Find out about the field of human resource development (HRD). Learn about jobs, education requirements and degree programs, as well as the career outlook for HRD professionals. Schools offering Accounting & Human Resources degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Essential Information

Human resource development (HRD), or employee development, is the process of training and mentoring employees to increase their knowledge, skills and abilities. HRD professionals typically work in human resource offices and plan and administer HRD programs. HRD often includes technology, language and leadership training classes. Some companies also encourage their employees to complete degrees by supplying funding and incentives through their HRD program.

Important Facts About Human Resource Development

Instructional, interpersonal, analytical, listening, and speaking skills

Typically working with people and giving presentations full-time during regular business hours, sometimes traveling

Offered through the American Society for Training and Development and the International Society for Performance Improvement

Instructional Coordinator, School/Career Counselor, Labor Relations Specialist

Jobs in Human Resource Development

Jobs in HRD include both trainers and managers. Training and development specialists assess the needs of businesses and organizations, determine what training programs are needed and conduct the training. These workers typically need a bachelor’s degree and some experience in teaching or training. Training and development managers oversee HRD specialists and programs. They determine the HRD budget and sometimes instruct specialists in training techniques. Managers in this field need a bachelor’s degree, but many have master’s degrees, and all need experience in the field. Many managers begin their career as training specialists.

Education Programs

Many colleges and universities offer degrees in human resource development. The majority offer master’s degrees. Some master’s degree programs focus on preparing graduates to teach human resource development. Others focus on preparing graduates to apply what they’ve learned in organizational settings. Many of these programs are directed towards working professionals and offer part-time and online options.

Career Information

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), jobs for training and development specialists are expected to grow at a slightly faster-than-average rate of 15% from 2012 to 2022. Employment of training and development managers is expected to grow at an about-average rate of 11% during the same period. In 2014, the BLS reported that specialists earned a median annual salary of $57,340, while managers earned a median of $101,930.

Dear Members and Friends of SHRM-Long Island (SHRM-LI),

For many HR professionals, the year-end is filled with performance appraisals, bonus and incentive programs, promotions, and vacation requests in addition to the daily demands upon us. I’d like to take a little break from all that to reflect on our beloved Chapter and take stock of the many wonderful ways we advanced the HR Profession this year.

I am happy to report that, in what is becoming a proud tradition, SHRM-LI experienced another National award-winning year!

For a second year SHRM National recognized our Members’ generosity and support with the SHRM Foundation Innovation Award and true to its mission, a record number of scholarships were awarded to six SHRM-LI Members.

Our Certification Study Group was named a SHRM Learning System Champion and a Pinnacle Award Finalist! The Fall Study Group session just concluded and the passing rate is impressive.

The Workforce Readiness Committee is putting the finishing touches on the college-level virtual certification course, The Competent Professional (TCP) and has expanded the high-school based Virtual Human Resources Certification program (VHR).

Our Membership base reached an all-time high of over 1650 – welcome one and all!

The Programming, Diversity Inclusion, and Professional Development Committees worked together to offer thought-provoking, enlightening and engaging talks, seminars, and workshops in addition to our monthly meetings; each yielding recertification credit secured by the Certification Committee.

The Hill kept our Legislative/Advocacy Committee active and on their toes, so that they can keep us on our toes, all the while the College Relations Committee has made an art of bringing together future HR professionals with current SHRM-LI Members who give uplifting and career inspiring presentations and talks.

And of course, putting it out for all to see, the Marketing Committee continues to expand our cyber presence and keeps us connected via social media.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the unwavering commitment, creativity and passion of an amazing group of Volunteer Chapter Leaders, Committee Members, the Board of Directors and Executive Board Members and our Sponsors and Partners.

Next year is already shaping up to be even more awesome (if you can imagine that!) and we invite you to participate and share in all that it means to be a Member of SHRM-LI – pride, passion, and professionalism at its best!

Cheers to all of you and your loved ones for a joyous holiday season and a Happy and Healthy 2017!

  • Quickbooks over VPN? Archive – Micro Focus Forums #operations, #work, #quickbooks, #long,

    #

    05-Apr-2005, 07:16 PM

I recently set up our new accountant with the BM vpn and NW clients so that
she might be able to access our quickbooks 2000 database via a mapped drive
while connected to our BM3.7 server. She can connect fine, and althought QB
(a known resource hog) is fairly slow for most common operations over the
vpn (both client and server have SDSL connections over 500kbps), it is not
entirely unworkable. SOME particular operations, however, take an
IMPOSSIBLY long time (especially find operations in the records DB),
literally many, many orders of magnitude slower than everything else.

Is this really just due to the number of drive accesses involved in these
operations, or is there some other buggy issue at work here?

Does anyone know how to troubleshoot/work around this problem effectively?
We are really trying to avoid having to shutdown/lock the QB system long
enough for our accountant to copy the DB to a local machine, do her work,
and then write it back out to our system. We really need a way for her to
be able to work remotely AND concurrently with the rest of us.

Many, many thanks in advance for any help.

    06-Apr-2005, 04:26 PM

You will probably need to take some traces (Ethereal on the PC’s
involved) to see what kind of traffic is involved. Might be as simple
as needing to reduce MTU size on one or both ends of that connection.

Perhaps simpler would be to use pcANYWHERE, VNC or terminal server/RDP
to remote control an internal PC over the VPN to do the work remotely.

My experience with Quickbooks over a lan is that the newer versions can be a
little slow as it is. I would venture to say that there is just way too
much data to push through that small DSL pipe.

    14-Apr-2005, 04:07 PM

Thanks for the input Craig and JP,

I apologize for my own sluggish response. I actually found a post on
another site that echoed Craig’s suggestion of running quickbooks on a local

Cool Things to Do with Netsh

The Netsh command is a powerful command-line tool for Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000. Netsh is available in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit and is standard in Windows 2003 and XP. Netsh lets you change almost any network configuration setting as well as document network configurations. You can use the command in a batch file or from its own command shell. Netsh has a useful Help system that you can access by adding /? to almost any of its subcommands. Here are 10 cool things that you can use Netsh to do.

    10. Show TCP/IP settings The command

shows the system s current TCP/IP configuration settings. You can see whether the system is using DHCP or static addressing as well as view the system s current IP address, subnet mask, gateway address, and DNS servers.

    9. Change network configuration Netsh can change the current network configuration. The command

sets the IP address of the system configuration Local Area Connection to 192.168.0.10, the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, and the gateway address to 192.168.0.254. This use of Netsh comes in handy for laptops that must switch between static and dynamic addressed networks.

    8. Use a dynamic DHCP assigned address The command

sets the IP address of the Local Area Connection system configuration to use DHCP addressing.

    7. Change a DNS server address When you change the system s IP address type, you almost always have to change the DNS server s address as well. The command

configures the Local Area Connection to use a DNS server whose address is 192.168.0.2.

    6. Dynamically assign the DNS server address When you switch to dynamic DHCP addressing, you typically also want the DNS server address to be assigned dynamically. The command

sets the Local Area Connection interface to use a DHCP-assigned DNS address.

    5. Configure a WINS server Netsh also lets you configure WINS servers. The following command configures a system s Local Area Connection interface to use a WINS server that has the IP address 192.168.100.3.

    4. Work with other interfaces Netsh works with DHCP, Internet Authentication Service (IAS), and RAS interfaces as well as the local network interface. The command

dumps the local DHCP server s configuration to the dhcpcfg.dat file. You can use this file in conjunction with Netsh to recreate the DHCP server.

    3. Work with remote systems One of Netsh s best hidden features is its ability to work with remote systems. The command

sets the current computer to a different system on the network.

    2. Save the current configuration The Interface Dump subcommand saves your current network configuration and generates a script that you can use to regenerate the configuration. The command

redirects the Dump command to the mycfg.dat file.

    1. Restore network configuration The Netsh Exec command runs a Netsh script file. The command

restores to your system the network configuration data that the preceding sample command saved.

I too ran into this problem. Do this: 1. Create a batch file called netsh.bat ( for example ) with the netsh commands you would like to run ( just as they would run locally on your PC ) 2. Copy netsh.bat to C:\ (for example) on all of the nodes that need the change ( you can copy netsh.bat across your LAN via another batch file ). 3. With another batch file, schedule an AT job on each node that needs the change: this at job should run c:\netsh.bat ( that has already been copied to each node that needs the change ). This works becuase the job is running locally on each PC, rather than being pushed from another. Thanks, and good luck. -LP

To add multiple DNS entries you need to type: netsh interface ip set dns name=”Wireless Network Connection” source=static addr=192.168.1.200 register=PRIMARY netsh interface ip add dns name=”Wireless Network Connection” addr=192.168.1.5 index=2 They need to be entered on a separate line.

    Cameron Fairbairn (not verified)

In order to add multiple DNS servers, use the following syntax: add dns “Local Area Connection” 10.0.0.1 add dns “Local Area Connection” 10.0.0.3 index=2 index=2 adds the IP as a secondary dns server.

    Anonymous User (not verified)

Wow, that came out ugly, let me try again: C:\WINNT\system32>netsh netsh>interface interface>show interface Admin State State Type Interface Name ————————————————————————- Enabled Dedicated Local Area Connection Enabled Internal Internal Enabled Loopback Loopback (Note: Look for “Dedicated” connection types with any name other than a GUID) interface>ip interface ip>delete dns “Local Area Connection” all interface ip>set dns “Local Area Connection” static 10.10.10.2 interface ip>add dns “Local Area Connection” 10.10.10.3 index=2

Would anyone know why I am getting the following error with #3, which is the remote command. When I run “netsh set machine virtual2000” I get the following response “WARNING: Could not obtain host information from machine: [10.1.2.106]. Some commands may not be available. Access is denied” The result is identical when I try “netsh -r virtual2000” I have tried physical servers as well, but I get the same result. I tried to google the error, but I don’t see anything. The netsh interface works fine until you get to the “set IP address” portion”. At that point, the available commands are blank.

Is it possible to use netsh to disable and then enable an interface? Been trying to figure out a way do do that from a cmd line. thx

The sentence “The Netsh command is a powerful command-line tool for Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000. Netsh is available in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit and is standard in Windows 2003 and XP.” should be changed to “The Netsh command is a powerful command-line tool that is installed by default for Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000.” Netsh is included with Windows 2000, not as part of the Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit. Thanks.

Find your interface name & set multiple dns entries like this: C:\WINNT\system32>netsh netsh>interface interface>show interface Admin State State Type Interface Name ————————————————————————- Enabled Dedicated Local Area Connection Enabled Internal Internal Enabled Loopback Loopback (Note: Look for “Dedicated” connection types with any name other than a GUID) interface>ip interface ip>delete dns “Local Area Connection” all interface ip>set dns “Local Area Connection” static 10.10.10.2 interface ip>add dns “Local Area Connection” 10.10.10.3 index=2

Managing Symptoms at the End of Life

    Fatigue
Chronic fatigue, the kind that affects most people who are dying, can stem from:

    • An illness.
    • Anemia.
    • Depression.
    • Poor nutrition.
    • Deconditioning (becoming out of shape from lack of exercise).
    • Side effects from treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation.

Persistent exhaustion impacts every aspect of a person’s life: psychological, physical and emotional. Ask your loved one’s doctor to adjust medications or try nondrug interventions such as gentle exercise. Even a walk around the block can help. If untreated, fatigue will overwhelm a patient’s quality of life.

    Loss of Appetite and Thirst
As the end approaches, the desire to eat and drink ebbs. Because the body either doesn’t need as many nutrients or can’t absorb them, it stops asking. Weight loss follows. Bear in mind that it’s a natural part of the dying process and the patient isn’t suffering. Neither family members nor health providers should force terminally ill patients to eat or drink. If they do ask for food or drink, offer small, frequent meals of high-calorie, high-protein foods, or add nutritional supplements. Keep ice chips handy. They relieve two key symptoms: dehydration and dry mouth.

For those who may consider more aggressive measures, such as feeding tubes or intravenous lines, confer first with the doctor, hospice nurse or primary medical professional about the pros and cons.

    Skin Breakdown
Anyone confined to a bed for long periods of time will risk bedsores, also known as decubitus ulcers. They usually occur on the arms, legs, feet and back, places where prolonged body weight creates pressure points against the bed. Lack of circulation causes skin to break down at these points. To protect skin and prevent infection, try the following:

    • Change your loved one’s position every two hours. Ask a medical professional to show you how to do this safely.
    • Be sure that your loved one maintains good nutrition as best as possible.
    • Talk to your doctor about whether a special bed or mattress can help.
    • If your loved one develops bedsores, ask a doctor, home care nurse or other medical professional how to care for them. If you cannot cope with changing the dressing, find someone who can.

    Cognitive Changes
Up to 85 percent of terminally ill patients suffer from cognitive changes during their final days. The most common afflictions include confusion, delirium and agitation. These symptoms arise from any number of causes, including the disease itself, infection, medications, and kidney and liver dysfunction. The reassurance of family and friends can play a vital role in helping someone who suffers cognitive problems. Discuss these cognitive changes with your health care team. Some medications long in use, such as haloperidol, can help with agitation and confusion.

    Digestive Problems
For those who are terminally ill, digestive issues are a frequent problem. The most common issues are:

    • Constipation: Patients who are bedbound and not eating a regular diet are often affected by constipation. Many medications worsen it, so talk to your loved one’s doctor or nurse about preventions and solutions.
    • Bowel obstructions: A cause of great discomfort, obstructions prevent patients from eliminating stool. An obstruction needs to be diagnosed by a health professional and treated as soon as possible.
    • Nausea/vomiting: Nausea torments 60 percent of terminally ill patients, and episodes of vomiting harass another 30 percent. Again, various medicines complicate it, so talk to the doctor about changing medications or having an anti-nausea drug prescribed.

    Shortness of Breath
If shortness of breath occurs, notify your loved one’s health team. There are medications that can relax breathing, and home or portable oxygen can help, too. If medical intervention still leaves your loved one feeling short of breath, try these ideas:

    • Keep him or her sitting up on pillows as much as possible rather than lying flat.
    • Open a window or turn on a fan. This can help psychologically.
    • Give your loved one a hand or foot massage. Relaxation in general can help calm agitated breathing.

    Emotional Expectationsof the Caregiver
Care recipients, their caregivers and family members can expect a whirlwind of emotions during the end of life process. Sometimes, these emotions can get in the way of the precious time you have left with the one you love. It’s important to honor your feelings and not to force cheer or happiness, as it can be very alienating to the person who is ill. Showing sadness is okay at times because it will let your loved one know they are cared for and will be missed.

Talk with family members, your medical team, social worker or clergy about how you are feeling. Try resolving lingering issues, and you will discover a sense of closure and peace of mind. Depression and anxiety are common emotions during this time, but don’t have to be inevitable parts of the end of life, for either the patient or the caregiver.
