Munsinger Gardens

From Sawmill to Flower Garden

The history of St. Cloud’s Munsinger Gardens may be compared to the garden’s well-worn paths; for both have interesting and unexpected turns. During the 1880s the lower east bank of the Mississippi River was the site of a sawmill. But by 1915 the city purchased the area for use as a neighborhood park. Eventually, the site became known as Riverside Park and Munsinger Gardens, the latter section named in honor of a former superintendent of parks, Joseph Munsinger. Munsinger Gardens has experienced many different stages of development. Improvements to the gardens occurred during the Great Depression through the Works Progress Administration. Projects from this period included planting trees and flowerbeds. Other additions included the creation of rock-lined paths, a lily pond, and a fountain. However, most of the work in developing the garden was directed by Joseph Munsinger. The first greenhouse was built in 1938. While the original greenhouse is gone, new ones stand in its place, and garden staff continues the tradition of growing flowers that help beautify this wonderful jewel known as Munsinger Gardens.

  • Slieve Donard (via the Glen River) – Northern Ireland s Highest Peak

    #slieve donard hotel

    #

    Slieve Donard (via Glen River)

    Route Description

Leave the car park in Donard Park heading towards the mountain and follow the Glen River uphill through old woodland of Scots Pine, Oak and Birch. At the first of 3 bridges, cross to the opposite bank.

Continue uphill through the forest, above a deep cut riverbed, for about 400m until another bridge is reached. The riverbank overhangs along this section so extra care is needed.

At this point cross back to the left hand side and resume journey uphill through the trees.

At the next bridge continue across the forest road and onto the rough track heading up towards the mountains, with thick forest on right (fenced), until a gate and stile is reached.

Cross the stile and follow the track above the river for about 2kms, heading towards the saddle between Donard and Commedagh.

At this point, the path crosses the river and continues uphill to the ‘Saddle’ where it meets the Mourne Wall.

At the Mourne Wall turn left and follow the wall steeply uphill towards the summit.

From the summit return by the same route, staying close to the wall until the Saddle is reached again. The cliffs on the north side of Donard known as Eagle Rocks should be avoided by walkers since the approaches are steep.

Return to Donard Park following the line of the Glen River.

    Getting to the Start

Follow the one way system to the south end of Newcastle main street. Donard Car Park has ample parking.

    Accessibility Grade

Managed to get to the top of Slieve Donard today. Still some snow against the wall.loads of couples climbing which was nice to see. It is also such a really quite place when the large groups have disappeared. Went from bloody bridge, first time so I do not know the Newcastle car park route. I decided against fell running it and it took me 7.20 11.10kms. my pace trebles backwards once I hit a hill. The view at the top was amazing, the sea was flat calm, Dublin, the sugar loaf, Scotland, isle of Man and Belfast and all the surrounding mountains visible. Although there are boggy areas, I do not know if boots which pull the legs off you are better than a decent pair of trainers, runners or gutties depending where you are from

My first ever proper hill/mountain walk, and my 47 year old knees are showing their age. The forest stage at the start is tougher than you would imagine, the next section is fine, the hike to the saddle isn’t easy and the final ascent along the wall required a good few short breaks. That being said, it was a wonderful experience filled with fabulous views and friendly hikers. I had hoped for a bit of cloud to move in as I reached the summit and the weather didn’t let me down. It went from clear skies to a downpour and 20m visibility in a heartbeat. Very glad to have decent waterproof clothing in the rucksack. All in all a great day. I will be back.

    About The Wisconsin Dells

The Dells of the Wisconsin River also called the Wisconsin Dells is a 5 mile gorge on the Wisconsin River in southern Wisconsin in the United States noted for its scenic beauty, in particular for its unique sandstone rock formations and tributary canyons. The cliffs, some over 100 feet high, and side canyons are closed to the public to protect sensitive ecological features. The viewing of the rock formations by water is a popular tourist attraction in the area. The nearby city of Wisconsin Dells is the center of summer tourist activity, much of it in the form of the theme parks unrelated to the river features.

The cultural history of the area stretches back several thousand years, from early Paleo-Indian people to the more recent Native American peoples, such as Ho-Chunk, Sac, and Menominee, who left behind effigy and burial mounds, camps and village sites, garden beds, and rock art. The Dells were made famous in 1886 by the photographer H. H. Bennett, who took the first stop-action photo of his son jumping onto Stand Rock.

Wisconsin Dells was founded as Kilbourn City in 1857 by Byron Kilbourn, who is notable for also founding Kilbourntown, one of the three original towns at the confluence of the Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers that joined to become Milwaukee. Before the establishment of Kilbourn City, the region around the dells of the Wisconsin River was primarily a lumbering area until 1851, when the La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad was chartered with Kilbourn as its president. The railroad made plans to bridge the Wisconsin River near the river’s dells, and a boomtown named Newport sprang up at the expected site of the bridge in 1853. The population of this new city quickly swelled to over 2,000, but when the railroad finally came through the area in 1857 it took nearly everyone by surprise by crossing the river a mile upstream from the site of Newport. As a result, Newport was rapidly turned into a ghost town as the settlers flocked to the new city at the site of the railroad bridge, Kilbourn City. Gradually, tourism became a large part of Kilbourn City. To make it easier for tourists to identify Kilbourn City with the natural landscape it was famous for, the name of the city was changed to Wisconsin Dells. Things to do in the Wisconsin Dells

    Customer s Comments:
This is a basic good value place to stay. a little oasis in the high price accomodation world.

The thing I liked the most was the floors. No carpet. I have always been leary of carpet. I never know what is in them. The room was very comfortable and the fact that there are dishes and cutlery in the kitchen unit meant I wasn t eating off paper or styrofoam with plastic. The desk staff was very nice and the check in was painless. I have sometimes felt I should be surrendering my first born to get a place to sleep. Not here. I will be going back this week and plan on staying there again

How to Write a Sympathy Note – Hospice of the Red River

#hospice of the red river valley

    #

How To Write A Sympathy Note

When someone you know loses a loved one to death, a common reaction is to send a sympathy card. But once it’s purchased, what do you write inside? Do you have the perfect words of comfort? Will you accidentally say the wrong thing? Writing a sympathy note isn’t easy, but it is important. You can’t make someone’s grief and pain go away, but you can help someone feel cared for and loved.

While it can be tempting to rely on Hallmark’s perfectly crafted messages or to scrawl “thinking of you” above your signature, taking a few moments to hand-write a heart-felt note is meaningful to those who are grieving. While each situation is different, there are some general recommendations that could be helpful.

    1. If you knew the person who died, share your favorite memory in your sympathy card, and use the deceased person’s name. Hospice of the Red River Valley Bereavement Specialist Jennifer said, “It has been 16 years since my father died; I still crave hearing someone mention his name. And better yet, to hear someone mention his name along with a happy memory of him. Just for a brief moment, it is as though he has come alive again through the memory shared.”

    2. If you didn’t know the deceased person well, share what you observed or what you remember about his or her qualities. For example, “I didn’t know your mother well, but I remember thinking how much you look like her.” Or, “I only met your mother once, but I remember Linda had a lovely smile. She seemed so full of joy.” Don’t feel like you must fabricate a memory; it’s OK to keep it short with a note like, “I am sorry to hear about the death of your uncle Mike. I hope you can find some comfort in many happy memories.”

    3. If you knew the deceased, but not the surviving family to whom you’re sending your card, it might be helpful to mention your connection to their loved one. For example, “Your mother and I were neighbors.” Or “I worked with your dad for 10 years.”

    4. If you know the family well, close your sympathy note with a specific offer of help. This might be a delivery of a meal, letting the person know you’re available for a chat over coffee, or the willingness to help with a chore. Rather than offer a vague offer to help, be specific, and then follow through. For example, “I would like to prepare a meal for your family. I’ll bring it over tomorrow night.”

    What to Avoid
There are some things you should not say or write in a sympathy card. While you have good intentions, the following phrases are often not interpreted as well-meaning by those who are grieving. Avoid phrases like:

It’s not necessary to write an elegant message in your sympathy card; it’s actually much more significant when you acknowledge a death at all, even if you are unsure what to say, than avoid those who are grieving.

I was so sad to hear about the passing of your mom. I remember when I first met Cindy; she was visiting your house in the summer and we stopped over to say hi. Your mom wouldn’t let us leave without some of her chocolate chip cookies. They were delicious! She was such a giving and kind person and will be missed. I hope you can find some comfort in many happy memories.

I have a meal for you and your family and I’ll deliver it later this week. I’m here for you. Please take care of yourself!

    Upcoming Events

We have several upcoming community events for Hospice of the Red River Valley. We hope to see you there.

The 7th Annual Ole’s Ride is Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016. The event is in memory of Ole Barten, who lost his battle to cancer in February 2011. Hospice of the Red River Valley cared for Ole during his last months, and the family wanted to use the event as a way to give back to an organization that cares for so many families in the area. The cost is $25 per bike, $15 for an additional rider, and includes a T-shirt, meal and chances at door prizes at each stop. A meal and live music by the Fat Cats and David Lee follow the ride.

Come for an evening of practical advice, resources and stories to offer hope and guidance to those living with dementia and their caregivers. Bring your questions about living with dementia at any stage for our experts! This event is co-sponsored by Hospice of the Red River Valley and The Alzheimer’s Association Minnesota-North Dakota. The event will be held in two locations: Sept. 13 in Fargo, N.D.. and Sept. 15 in Grand Forks, N.D. Family caregivers, professional caregivers (nurses, social workers, chaplains, clergy, physicians) and anyone who works with people suffering from dementia should attend this event.

Hospice of the Red River Valley is pleased to offer many grief and loss classes and workshops this fall, including:

    • Beyond Widowhood: A Transitions class: Fargo, N.D.
    • Journeying Through Grief: Offered in multiple locations
    • Youth Journeys: Fargo, N.D.
    • Grief During the Holidays: Offered in multiple locations
