Part-Time RN Program Information

Essential Information

Part-time nursing programs are typically offered by community colleges. Program length can range between 2.5 and 4 years, and many of the classes are offered at night or on the weekends. The first year of enrollment usually focuses on the completion of general education courses. Once these courses are finished, students can begin classes in nursing. The program also includes clinical training.

Applicants must hold a high school diploma or a GED certificate, and some schools request ACT or SAT scores. Proof of immunizations and a current CPR certification may also be requested. Following degree completion, graduates will need to pass the required national exam to gain licensure before they can seek employment.

Part-Time Associate of Nursing

Students receive training in nursing ethics, pharmacology and nursing administration. If there are any deficiencies in high school math and science classes, students may be required to take the MNE placement test, which is also known as COMPASS. Some programs have supervised clinical training sessions that allow students to gain practical nursing experience in health care settings. Students learn how to assess patients as well as topics like anatomy and physiology and different nursing perspectives. Some of the coursework that can be expected includes:

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

Due to the increasing elderly population, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected that employment of registered nurses would increase by about 16% between 2014 and 2024. According to the BLS in 2015, registered nurses earned a median hourly wage of $32.45, which amounts to $67,490 per year.

Continuing Education Information

Completion of a part-time associate’s degree in nursing does not qualify a graduate as a registered nurse (RN). In order to become a registered nurse, a graduate must also take the National Council Licensure Examination-RN (NCLEX-RN) for state licensure. Once this exam has been passed, the RN designation is recognized, and graduates can apply for entry-level RN positions.

For individuals who work full time and would like to complete the education required to become an RN, a part-time RN program may be a good fit. Graduates will need to take the NCLEX-RN in order to qualify for mandatory licensure. Employment in the field is projected to be above-average during the 2014-2024 decade.

    Texas Woman’s University’s DNP program is for advanced practice nurses ready to function as expert clinicians integrating and evaluating evidence-based practices in acute and primary care settings.

    Admission Requirements

    In order to be admitted into the program, applicants must be licensed and certified by an accredited program as an advanced practice nurse (NP, CRNA, CNM, CNS). Additional requirements for program admission can be found in the course catalog .

    Program Requirements

    The DNP program is a hybrid curriculum with both online and classroom work and requires 46 hours to complete. In addition, 500 contact hours are required in the candidate’s selected area of clinical expertise as well as completion of a capstone project.     Patrick joined Hospice of Michigan in May 2004 as Service Line Director – Facilities, and has since served our organization as Corporate Director Of Clinical Services, Corporate Director Of New Business Development, and Corporate Director Of Organizational Integrity. Serving as Senior Vice President, Service Operations, Chief Operating Officer since 2007, Patrick was most recently appointed Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer in March 2014.

    As Executive Vice President, Patrick is the lead member of Hospice of Michigan’s Executive Team, providing guidance in all areas of operations. Patrick continues to focus on improving Hospice of Michigan’s quality and satisfaction outcomes through of our five diamond model of care, which creates operational efficiencies that help us achieve our mission to innovate end-of-life care. He is responsible for oversight of At Home Support, Hospice of Michigan’s advanced illness management program, all clinical and service operations, pediatric programs, as well as our human resource discipline, Work Life Services.

    Patrick is a graduate of the Second Degree/Second Career program at Wayne State University College of Nursing. In addition, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, an MBA and a MHSA from the University of Michigan.

    Before joining HOM, he was executive director of Avalon Hospice in Flint. He also worked at Henry Ford Hospital where he was a staff RN and assistant manager for three years.

    Patrick is a COO Forum Member of the National Hospice Work Group and has been appointed by Governor Rick Snyder to be a public board member of the State Board of Mortuary Sciences. He is also a board member of the National Arab American Nurses Association (NAANA) and sits on the Michigan Oncology Quality Consortium Advisory Board (MOQC)

    Job Description for Hospice Registered Nurse (RN)

    A hospice registered nurse (RN) works with patients and families facing terminal illness. They work as part of an interdisciplinary team that creates and implements a care plan. They are responsible for the coordination, documentation, and communication of care with the patient and their family, as well as the physician and hospice team. Aside from participating in the care of the patient, they may also need to attend meetings, workshops, in-services, and reviews as dictated by their agency or hospital.

    Hospice registered nurses may work a variety of hours, including during weekends and evenings; they may work or be on call during holidays. Hospice registered nurses are often required to travel to their patients and perform their duties in the patient’s home; because of this, they must have their own transportation to get to and from appointments. Most employers also require that their hospice registered nurses have a valid driver’s license and at least the state-minimum automobile insurance.

    Hospice registered nurses are required to have a registered nurse license in their state, as well as completion of a nursing degree.     You can become a registered nurse through an approved diploma / certificate program administered by a hospital or educational institution. These programs typically take 12-18 months to complete and the individual will then meet the prerequisites for taking the NCLEX-RN exam to become a licensed RN.

    Associate s Degree (ADN) RN Programs

    Another way to become a registered nurse is through the completion of an Associate s degree in nursing program. Most Associate s degree programs take 18-24 months to complete at a local community college. Once the student has earned their ADN they can sign up to take the NCLEX-RN exam. These programs are also fairly quick to complete and relatively cheap since they can be completed at junior colleges. The nice thing about having an Associate s degree is that you can always go back to school to earn your Bachelor s degree at a later time. If you decide to enroll in a Bachelor s degree program you will only need about two years to complete your degree.

    Bachelor s Degree (BSN) RN Programs

    The best career choice for a future registered nurse is to enroll in a four year Bachelor s degree in nursing program. Although this degree will take about four years to complete, the future graduate will possess a valuable degree that can be used in several different ways. A student who graduates from a BSN program can take the NCLEX-RN test and become a licensed registered nurse. An RN who holds a Bachelor s degree will be preferred by employers over RNs with a lesser degree or no degree at all. An RN with a BSN degree can also apply for nursing management positions and advance quickly within the nursing profession into more specialized fields. Lastly, a BSN degree allows the individual to pursue other careers outside of nursing. A four year degree from a reputable university has value in the US economy and is a signal of academic achievement and general competence. Holding a bachelor s degree in nursing also puts you one step closer to achieving a Master s degree with about 18 months of additional schooling.

    I realize it’s not in OC, but Cal State LB is pretty close to you, and you could get your bachelor’s in two years in the trimester program. I’m in my sixth semester there and it has been challenging but great. If you really don’t like where you are, look into transferring. There isn’t a waiting list, and I know Saddleback just switched their admissions and now they don’t have a waiting list either. I think Goldenwest does, though, so that might not be your best bet. Good luck!

    I live in Aliso Viejo and I’m on a program at San Bernardino University. It is a long drive, but I don’t mind. I’m a partnership Riverside Community Hospital- CSUSB student and have all of my clinicals at RCH, where I would I will be working after graduating. This is an accelerated program and I will have my BSN in 2 years. I think that having BSN is better. I’ve heard that Long Beach is very impacted and it is hard to get in, so I did’t even try to apply. I’ve applied to San Marcos University, CSUSB and Saddleback. I got into CSUSM, CSUSB and didn’t get into Saddleback, but I didn’t care, since I was already going to CSUSB. It is much easier to get on a program at CSUSB because they accept 80 students 2 x a year. There is one transfer student in my class, she transferred from Loma Linda.

    i really did not want to deal w/a bachelors right now. i already have a ba from years ago, so i just wanted the rn. i heard that saddleback was crazy hard like cypress. is the time commitment outside of class insane? this is my typical tues: class from 800-1130, drive 40 min to hosp to p/u assign, get pat. and fill out paper work for about 1 1/2-2 hrs, drive home 45-1hr, eat dinner, start prep work for oh 3-5 hrs. go to bed hopefullly sleep 6 hrs (most stu sleep w/only 3 or 4, but i refuse, i’m too old ), wed. get up 430, work 630-1600, go home hr drive home, eat, home work 3-5 hrs. hellish, i’m telling you. is this normal for you all? thanks for the info!

    you mentioned you have a BA. some colleges have a 15 month program to get a second bachelor’s in nursing. it’s just as tedious as getting your associate’s degree in nursing too, but at least you’re getting a higher degree for the same work.

    I go to school only 2 times a week T-Th. Last quarter I had clinicals from 6:45 to 12:00 and a lecture from 14:00 to 15:50. Only 7 units, where at Saddleback there are 15 units/semester. Next quarter I will have 11 units and the same days of the week. The clinicals will be the same, but the lecture will be from 13:00 to 17:50. I also have BS degree and I’m not very young. If you will apply to CSULB, they will only consider you for the accelerated 1 y 4 mo program, which is very hard, my friend is on this program.

    saddleback doesn’t have 15 units of nursing a semester. that’s only if you include general education, which many students who enter have already fulfilled. saddleback has an average of 7 units of core nursing a semester.

    Radon is colorless at standard temperature and pressure and it is the most dense gas known. At temperature below it’s freezing point is has a brilliant yellow phosphorescence. It is chemically unreactive, it is highly radioactive and has a short half life.

    Radon was sometimes used in hospitals to treat cancer and was produced as needed and delivered in sealed gold needles. Radon is used in hydrologic research, because of it’s rapid loss to air. It is also used in geologic research and to track air masses.

    Radon in the environment

    Radon can be found in some spring water and hot springs. There is anyway a detectable amount of radon in the atmosphere. Radon collects over samples of radium 226 at the rate of around 0.001 cm3/day per g of radium.

    Radon occurs in the environment mainly in the gaseous phase. Consequently, people are mainly exposed to radon through breathing air.

    Background levels of radon in outside air are generally quite low, but in indoor locations radon levels in air may be higher. In homes, schools and buildings radon levels are increased because radon enters the buildings through cracks in the foundations and basements.

    Some of the deep wells that supply us with drinking water may also contain radon. As a result a number of people may be exposed to radon through drinking water, as well as through breathing air.

    Radon levels in groundwater are fairly high, but usually radon is quickly released into air as soon as the groundwater enters surface waters.

    Exposure to high levels of radon through breathing air is known to cause lung diseases. When long-term exposure occurs radon increases the chances of developing lung cancer. Radon can only cause cancer after several years of exposure.

    Radon may be radioactive, but it gives of little actual gamma radiation. As a result, harmful effects from exposure to radon radiation without actual contact with radon compounds are not likely to occur.

    It is not known whether radon can cause health effects in other organs besides the lungs. The effects of radon, which is found in food or drinking water, are unknown.

    Radon is a radioactive compound, which rarely occurs naturally in the environment. Most of the radon compounds found in the environment derive from human activities. Radon enters the environment through the soil, through uranium and phosphate mines, and through coal combustion.

    Some of the radon that is located in the soil will move to the surface and enter the air through vaporization. In the air, radon compounds will attach to dust and other particles. Radon can also move downwards in the soil and enter the groundwater. However, most of the radon will remain in the soil.

    Radon has a radioactive half-life of about four days; this means that one-half of a given amount of radon will decay to other compounds, usually less harmful compounds, every four days.

    Kaplan Nursing

    RN-BSN Program

    The RN-BSN degree program is a 12 month, three consecutive semester program (fall, spring, summer) designed for the Associate Degree prepared licensed RN interested in completing a BSN degree program. Students work on-line, asynchronously while accommodating their work schedules. MUSC is an academic health science center environment with six (6) colleges on campus: the College of Medicine, College of Graduate Studies, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy, and College of Health Professions. There are interprofessional academic and extracurricular activities.

    Courses are 5 weeks in length for didactic courses and 13-15 weeks in length for clinical courses. There is one clinical course each semester with a focus on the following: gerontology, community/public health, and leadership. The clinical hours consist of a project that may include either virtual or live work. The program focuses on the knowledge, skills and values deemed essential for professional nursing practice with a specific focus on leadership, care coordination and communication skills in today’s multifaceted health care system. 60 semester hours of prerequisites must be completed prior to entering the program, taken at an accredited school, and meet the minimum course requirements.

    The RN-BSN program provides a foundation for graduate study in nursing. MUSC offers the Doctor of Nursing Practice and Doctor of Philosophy degrees (DNP or PhD ). Our graduate programs are online.

    The College of Nursing RN-BSN program admits one cohort annually beginning fall semester. The deadline for completed Fall 2017 applications is June 1, 2017 .

    Job Description for Hospice Registered Nurse (RN)

    A hospice registered nurse (RN) works with patients and families facing terminal illness. They work as part of an interdisciplinary team that creates and implements a care plan. They are responsible for the coordination, documentation, and communication of care with the patient and their family, as well as the physician and hospice team. Aside from participating in the care of the patient, they may also need to attend meetings, workshops, in-services, and reviews as dictated by their agency or hospital.

    Hospice registered nurses may work a variety of hours, including during weekends and evenings; they may work or be on call during holidays. Hospice registered nurses are often required to travel to their patients and perform their duties in the patient’s home; because of this, they must have their own transportation to get to and from appointments. Most employers also require that their hospice registered nurses have a valid driver’s license and at least the state-minimum automobile insurance.

    Hospice registered nurses are required to have a registered nurse license in their state, as well as completion of a nursing degree. They are typically required to have some experience with geriatrics as a hospice nurse or as a professional nurse elsewhere; they also must have knowledge of the hospice care program and their role in it. In addition, they often must meet requirements regarding annual continuing education hours and CPR certification.

    A hospice registered nurse (RN) works with patients and families facing terminal illness. They work as part of an interdisciplinary team that creates and implements a care plan. They are responsible for the coordination, documentation, and communication of care with the patient and their family, as well as the physician and hospice team. Aside from participating in the care of the patient, they may also need to attend meetings, workshops, in-services, and reviews as dictated by their agency or hospital.

    Hospice registered nurses may work a variety of hours, including during weekends and evenings; they may work or be on call during holidays. Hospice registered nurses are often required to travel to their patients and perform their duties in the patient’s home; because of this, they must have their own transportation to get to and from appointments. Most employers also require that their hospice registered nurses have a valid driver’s license and at least the state-minimum automobile insurance.

    Hospice registered nurses are required to have a registered nurse license in their state, as well as completion of a nursing degree. They are typically required to have some experience with geriatrics as a hospice nurse or as a professional nurse elsewhere; they also must have knowledge of the hospice care program and their role in it. In addition, they often must meet requirements regarding annual continuing education hours and CPR certification.
