‘Bates Motel’ Costume Designer Monique Prudhomme Opens Norman’s Mother’s Closet

We all know how the story of Norman Bates and his mother ended. And it wasn t pretty

But it fell to costume designer Monique Prudhomme to help show how that strange relationship began in Bates Motel. the new TV series that premiered Monday.

The A E series, starring Freddy Highmore (Finding Neverland ) as young Norman Bates and Oscar-nominated actress Vera Farmiga(Up in the Air) as his beautiful mother, Norma, is set in the present day. But there are overtones of the classic dark style used in the famed 1960 Hitchcock thriller.

I did a lot of research on film noir, the whole background of the black-and-white detective films, explains Prudhomme, who scored an Oscar nom in 2009 for her work on Terry Gilliam s The Imaginarium of Dr.Parnassu s. I wanted to create a kind of timeless progression of Norma s style, taken from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60 s, a melting pot of all these periods.

She found the mercurial character of Norma fascinating to dress. She is such an amazing female character. She expresses herself totally without self-consciousness. Sometimes she thinks she is Marilyn Monroe or Florence Nightingale or Audrey Hepburn. My goal was to express all these sides of her.

For instance, when we first see Norma arrive at the hotel, she is starting a new life. She s playing the mommy who makes breakfast every morning; she s very optimistic and upbeat. She wears a blue and white dress, designed by Prudhomme, with a pale blue sweater. It s very soft and feminine and it s a traditional French pattern as if to say, Here is your castle, Norman.

Later Norman briefly sees his mother undressing in the upstairs bedroom window as he carries boxes from the car, a nod to the original Alfred Hitchcoc k film in which her corpse is eerily glimpsed from the same viewpoint. Norma makes a special dinner, setting a fancy table with flowers and candles. And she s wearing a very womanly V-neck dress with black high heels, her hair worn up, almost like she s are on a date.

This dress illustrates the complexity of their relationship, says Prudhomme. It makes us wonder why would she be dressed like that?

Prudomme designed the black jersey wrap dress for Farmiga to create that uneasy effect. She also designed an elegant 40s style silk bathrobe that Norma slips into when the local police come calling.

Norma always sees herself as very glamorous, the designer says of of the cashmere robe. In fact, most of Norma s costumes are custom designed for her, down to her leather jackets. But she also wears a smattering of upwardly accessible labels including J Brand,James Perse,J. Crew and Liberty. Pay attention to the shirt Norma wears when she s ripping up blood-stained carpets. That s a James Perse.

In the season premiere, Norman looks like he s straight out of Leave it Beaver in his dorky blue, red and white striped short-sleeved T-shirt and his preppy crew-neck sweaters.

We scoured everywhere for Norman s clothes; second hand, vintage and thrift stores. We got a lot from Old Navy , says Prudhomme. The idea is that Norman is still dressed by his mother. He s the all-American boy in his khakis, but there is always something very juvenile about him in the early episodes. He wants to be on his own, but he s still a little boy. And the Fair Isle sweaters give him a proper, controlled but timeless look that sets him apart from anyone else at his school.

In the upcoming episode called The Wood Chuck, Norma changes right in front of Norman, revealing a sexy black body suit.

We found that body suit at a French lingerie store in Vancouver, Prudhomme recalls. It s so funny how you look and look for something and then suddenly it appears before you on a hanger. It is from a lingerie company called Aubade. and it was perfect.

What do you think?

Liverpool s Adelphi Hotel handed a zero-star food hygiene rating

The Britannia Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool, one of Britannia Hotels flagship properties.

Liverpool’s landmark Adelphi Hotel has a zero-star food hygiene rating.

The hotel, which came under fire in November after a customer shared photos of his “filthy” 150-a-night room. has been told its kitchens are in need of urgent improvement.

Liverpool council environmental health teams slapped the city centre hotel with the lowest rating in an inspection in September.

Food hygiene and safety was marked as “poor”, structural compliance – whether the building is fit for purpose – classed as “bad” and the inspectors had “no confidence” in the hotel’s management.

Inspectors looked at whether food is prepared hygienically, whether the kitchens are fit for purpose and how well food safety records are kept.

The council says an investigation is now underway into the hotel. Health inspectors have powers to serve an improvement notice or could even prosecute if the hygiene breaches are found to be that serious.

A spokesman said: “We are in discussions with the Adelphi with the aim of supporting them to address the issues, but as there is an ongoing investigation we can’t comment further at this stage.”

The Adelphi’s two restaurants, Jenny’s Carvery and Crompton’s, have become the subject of mixed reviews online.

Jenny’s, which has a three-star rating on TripAdvisor, is described as “a place to avoid”, with some diners warning “chaos!” and “don’t go there”.

Some customers, however, described the food as “yummy” and “better than it looked”.

On December 1, ‘Silverback97’ from Glasgow wrote: “Do not be tempted by this place, it is terrible!

“If we were asked to pay for this meal we would have refused.”

The hotel, which is a Grade II listed building is more than 100 years old and was once known as “the most luxurious hotel outside of London,” attracting big names such as Laurel and Hardy, Frank Sinatra and Bob Dylan.

The Adelphi Hotel

During the 20th century, when the city was used as a major arrival and departure point for ocean liners, wealthy passengers would stay at The Adelphi before embarking to North America.

But the hotel’s reputation has been tarnished by criticism.

In November, Peter Moss took pictures of 150-a-night room 578 after a “dreadful” stay.

He claimed the room had broken furniture, the window would not close and that it was dusty and dirty with damp and condensation stains.

Mr Moss claimed that his email of complaint and follow-up letter have been ignored by Adelphi bosses.

Britannia, which owns the hotel, was last year named by Which? magazine as the worst hotel group in Britain following a survey.

The company declined to comment.

  • The St David – s Hotel – Spa Review, Cardiff, Wales #hotels

    #st davids hotel cardiff

    #

    Destinations

The St David s Hotel Spa

    Location

In the regenerated Cardiff Bay area, St David’s Hotel Spa is a 10-minute taxi ride from Cardiff Central station, and a 20-minute walk from the city centre. It is next to the shops, bars and attractions of the Cardiff Bay area, including the Doctor Who Experience and the Welsh Assembly building. However, the great views across Cardiff Bay from balconies (not a feature of all rooms) are rather spoiled by traffic noise from the nearby A4232.

    Style character

An enormous white and glass building, St David’s has an impressive uninterrupted ground floor to roof atrium. Although the view from each floor’s corridor is not, therefore, for those with vertigo, this design allows for a pleasant feel of light and space. On the other hand, the large panes of glass and clean white walls occasionally mean that the design slips into “office” territory. Indeed, the property has to tread a fine line between business and leisure hotel, accommodating both types of customer, as well as many wedding parties. Although it mostly succeeds, the very prominent “business suite” made things feel slightly corporate. The Marine spa has excellent facilities in the shape of a swimming pool, sauna, hydrotherapy spa pool, gym, and ESPA treatments. The waiting area has a good range of teas, coffees and juices, magazines, and a collection of books including Charles Dickens and Rudyard Kipling. The floor to ceiling windows allow for lovely views over the bay, complete, perhaps, with bobbing swans. A nice touch is the private lift for spa access, so guests can get ready in their rooms and then go straight to the spa without traipsing through the main hotel reception.

    Service facilities

Staff were friendly and efficient – perhaps overly so at breakfast, when plates were whipped away before I had finished my last bite of food. This may make guests feel as if staff members want to “clean up around them”. But they were also knowledgeable: I took a recommendation about boarding a water taxi from the Bay to the city centre and found it a pleasant way to get to Cardiff’s main park and castle. Staff in the hotel spa were obviously well-trained, and the therapist who gave me a back massage was attentive to the pressure she applied.

    Rooms

My deluxe twin room was well equipped, with all the accoutrements of a business hotel, including shoe horns, Molton Brown toiletries and a flat screen television. However, the room lacked the character one might expect from a property that also markets itself to leisure travellers, who could want more than service- lead accommodation. The bland pale wood fittings and generic leather chair meant the room did not have “stay factor”, and the scuffed furniture felt less than five-star. There was also audible noise from other rooms during the night. My room did not have a mini bar, although 24-hour room service is available.

The Argonaut: A Boutique Hotel in San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf.

With a name like the Argonaut, it’s impossible not to speak of this hotel in grand, almost legendary terms. Inspired by the Greek legend and Gold Rush-era adventurers, it’s one of those rare places in San Francisco that truly merits a term like iconic. Located in the historic Haslett Warehouse, the Argonaut’s home is a grand building built in 1907 of exposed brick, Douglas Fir beams and so much seaside character; you feel as though you can almost reach out and touch the colorful Barbary Coast past here.

    End of life care

    Background

Dementia is a progressive condition for which there is currently no cure. All people who develop dementia will have dementia at the end of their lives, either as the condition they die from or as a factor which may complicate the care of a different condition. Diminishing capacity means that it is important for the person with dementia to plan for the end of their life at an early stage. Problems with capacity and communication can also contribute to undignified treatment and the under treatment of pain in people with dementia at the end of their lives. Significant, co-ordinated and holistic support is needed to ensure that all people with dementia end their lives with dignity, free from pain and in the place of their choosing.

    Alzheimer’s Society calls for:

    • Ensuring a good death for people with dementia. The Department of Health (2008) suggests that, for many, a good death would involve being treated as an individual, with dignity and respect. without pain and other symptoms, in familiar surroundings and in the company of close family and friends. Too often, however, people with dementia receive undignified treatment and are ending their lives in pain (Alzheimer’s Society 2012, Health Service Ombudsman, 2011, Commission on Dignity in Care for Older People, 2012, Royal College of Psychiatrists 2011) and partnership between dementia care and palliative care are undeveloped (NCPC, 2009). People with dementia may not be referred for specialist end of life care or receive inappropriate treatment. Alzheimer’s Society believes that people with dementia have the same right to a good death as people with other health conditions.
    • Advance planning for end of life care. People with dementia should be involved in decisions about end of life care wherever possible. However, as dementia advances, in many cases capacity is lost and decisions need to be made on behalf of the person with dementia. Advanced planning for end of life care is vital. At present, taboos about discussing death and poor understanding of dementia mean that these conversations do not take place between people with dementia, families, friends and health and social care professionals. People with dementia should be supported to use their rights, under the Mental Capacity Act in England and Wales, to identify whom they want to make decisions and any treatments they would not want. In Northern Ireland, the Assembly is developing mental capacity legislation.
    • Improved training for health and social care professionals. Declining ability to communicate characterises the later stages of dementia. Health and social care professionals should be trained to provide high-quality, person-centred care to improve dignity and quality of life even when communication has diminished. People working with someone at the end of their life also need to be able to communicate sensitively themselves, both to families and to the person with dementia, following best practice set out by the Social Care Institute for Excellence (www.scie.org.uk ).
    • Focus on quality of life, rather than length of life, in the final stages of dementia. Withholding or withdrawing treatment is especially ethically complex and emotionally challenging for a person with dementia as they may lack the ability to communicate, the capacity to make decisions and may not have prepared instructions about their wishes. The NICE-SCIE Guideline on dementia states that artificial feeding and hydration should not commence if disinclination to eat or inability to swallow is considered to be part of the progression of the disease and will not change in future (NICE-SCIE, 2007). Alzheimer’s Society believes that when someone with dementia is close to dying the main issue of concern should be quality of life and quality of death, not length of life. However, it is important that there is an honest and open discussion between medical professionals and family, friends and carers about any decisions to withhold or withdraw treatment. The quality of life and comfort of the person with dementia is paramount. Specialist palliative and comfort care should be available to the person at all times and appropriate emotional support should be available for families.
    • Improved emotional and spiritual support. Research has suggested that the emotional and spiritual needs of people with dementia are disproportionately neglected (Sampson et al, 2006). It is still possible for a person with advanced dementia to be depressed, distressed or upset. People with dementia must receive holistic care that recognises and responds to individual wishes and needs.
    • Improved planning and co-ordination of care. Only half of people who express a preference to die at home actually die at home (ONS, 2014). This places pressure on the NHS, causing 52 per cent of unplanned hospital admissions, and adversely impacts on the quality of care received by a person with dementia (ONS, 2014). Alzheimer’s Society supports the government’s goal of ensuring that more people die in a place of their choosing (Department of Health, 2008). To achieve this, the Society calls for the implementation of the Palliative Care Funding Review (Hughes-Hallet et al 2011). This would provide commissioners with funding for palliative care, regardless of setting, in-line with a person with dementia’s wishes.
    • Implement the recommendations of the Leadership Alliance for the Care of Dying People. In July 2014, new best practice guidance from the LACDP replaced the Liverpool Care Pathway. Alzheimer’s Society supports the LACDP’s recommendations that, in the final weeks and days of life, the dying person should be the focus of care. However, Alzheimer’s Society is concerned that the guidance does not have statutory force.
    • Assisted dying. Alzheimer’s Society is not calling for a change in the law on assisted dying or euthanasia, although we monitor changes in legislation to ensure that people with dementia are appropriately safeguarded. We believe that people with dementia are entitled to good end of life care. This includes use of advance care planning and advanced decisions to refuse treatment so that people with dementia can receive the treatment and care that responds to individual needs and wishes.

Hospice care and palliative care: What s the difference?

I’ve talked to hundreds of people about the health care options and decisions they face at the end of life. It’s a challenging time and understandably many have little knowledge, while others have misconceptions, and some have bitter disagreements.

Here’s a basic primer for two common approaches: hospice and palliative care.

Two myths about hospice care are prevalent. First, many people believe hospice is provided in a place like a hospital. While it’s true many hospices have residential facilities, hospice care is usually given at home.

Second, people often believe that with hospice, there is no treatment but pain control. That’s not the case at all. Medical care will continue as before, except that further attempts to cure the major disease will stop. If a person gets a bladder infection, or pneumonia, for example, regular treatment will be available. If the person chooses to not go to a hospital for treatment of something like pneumonia, treatment at home will be offered. And if a breakthrough cure of the primary disease occurs, it will not be denied to the hospice patient.

Often I am the first one to bring up hospice care with the patient or their family. As geriatricians, my colleagues and I see many people with incurable and late stage disease. (It’s important to know that hospice care is available for all ages, though.) For patients and families, electing hospice care means extra help for the family, and occasionally the provision of helpful equipment. We bring up hospice care when we believe the patient or family will benefit from these extra services.

Sometimes it’s a touchy subject. I’ve been angrily yelled at by family who want the patient to keep trying for cure, to keep taking chemotherapy, to try more radiation, to go for more surgery or to some other country for some unproven therapy. We frequently think these family members are either uninformed or in denial. We sometimes wish they could feel their loved one’s nausea, weakness and confusion from hopeless chemotherapy, or their desperate struggle for air in advanced lung disease.

Sometimes the cost of hospice is a concern. Medicare and most insurance companies cover hospice care. Hospice is covered under Medicare Part A. There is no deductible, and copayments are very low. The restriction is that care must be coordinated by the hospice team.

Hospice care is defined fairly clearly by Medicare and other insurers. “Palliative care” seems more ambiguous – there is no standard definition – and is often less understood than hospice care. Palliative care is focused on making patients as comfortable as possible with an emphasis on maximizing the quality of daily life. It is provided in different ways. In our Palliative Care Consult Service, we provide suggestions to the regular treating physician and to the family, usually about pain and other symptoms. Our consult service often includes a social worker and a faith community representative.

Bitter disagreements about end of life care come not only from family members but also from providers. About 15 years ago, when I was with the National Institute on Aging, I had a discussion with an oncologist who represented a professional society. He argued that there should be no limit on chemotherapy, up to the point of death. We discussed a new therapy that would add one month of life expectancy to a geriatric patient. His position was that regardless of the intense side effects it caused, it should be prescribed and encouraged. My position was it should be discussed with the patient, and if it is declined, that decision should be respected. Now years later, that controversy persists, not just among oncologists. Terminal care is also provided by pulmonologists, cardiologists, and generalists, for example, some of whom advocate intensive care to the end, while others respect the patient’s request for limited care.

This basic primer is like a map. “There is North America, and there is Europe.” They are separated by an ocean, yet they have much in common. North America is like hospice, with clear boundaries. Palliative care may be more like Europe, which merges into Asia (which may be like “usual care”). Where one stops and the other begins is mostly a political decision, just like the separation of palliative vs. usual care.

End of life care can be challenging, and the options may seem murky. In order to find their way, patients, family members and physicians might benefit from “GPS” systems, including helpful road side assistance to help them navigate these complex health care decisions. Definitions and primers are just the start of customizing this final journey.

James Cooper is Clinical Professor of Medicine, Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Care, George Washington University. He blogs on the Prepared Patient Forum .

I apologize, but I m still a bit confused about the difference. Are the two types of care mutually exclusive? Or would hospices provide palliative care in addition to other services? If the latter, what additional services would a hospice provide?

Or, if palliative care is just focused on alleviating symptoms, is it appropriate for people not facing the end of their lives?

There are differences in the benefits you get with hospice vs palliative care. With hospice, the patient can receive help with home care (shopping, cleaning, laundry, etc.) without a skilled nursing need. With palliative care, that s not available unless there s a skilled nursing need (wound care, dressing changes, osteomy care, PT, OT, etc.) With hospice a physician must certify that in his/her opinion the life expectancy likely won t exceed 6 months (though there can be extensions). So, yes, hospice care does provide palliative care in addition to other services. The hospice approach is holistic and team based (as is palliative care). And home hospice refers to all of these services provided in the patient s home.

Do you think that hospice care has resulted from the futility of certain medical treatments? do you believe that hospice care offers a non- medicalized dying process? Under what conditions would hospice care merge with paliative care? Do you think that the crucial factor would be the state of disease of the patient? What if the person is merely physically disabled?

After almost 40 years as a respiratory therapist it has been my experience and those of many of my coworkers that the vast majority of family members are acting because of their own needs-frequently guilt or money. They think about how they feel, not how the patient feels. Even what the patient has specifically filled out a DNR order their family overrides it and the patient is subjected to days, weeks and sometimes even months of painful procedures that does not prolong life, it only prolongs death. Whoever wrote Americans think death is optional was so right

Leslie, I believe fear is the biggest factor as many people want to do something to help and change the situation or turn the clock back. The hospice team can help to manage the difficulties that families have. While many make decisions that are in line with what they want, we can t fault them for the suffering that they are enduring while witnessing the decline and loss of someone in their lives. The navigating of the dynamics that help the loved ones are the true skills of the hospice team in addition to the relief of suffering through good pain and symptom management.

I agree that people don t want this situation. I also agree that hospice people are wonderful and incredibly strong to do the stressful work that they do every day. I had hospice for my mother. I think that the physicians need to be more proactive in suggesting hospice. I think they need to eliminate the ideas that keeping a patient a full code will change the outcome. I m not saying that it is not difficult. I m saying that frequently it is difficult for the wrong reasons.

LA s First AIDS Hospice Returned To City In Memorial Service

ELYSIAN PARK (CBSLA.com) — The Chris Brownlie Hospice, once used as the city s first hospice for AIDS patients, was turned back over to the city Saturday.

A memorial celebration was held to honor the facility for the service it provided from 1988 to 1996 as a nursing home for people dying from diseases caused by the HIV virus.

The building had a long history of helping the sick. The hospice once housed the nurses dormitory for the city s Barlow Respiratory Hospital, a tuberculosis sanitarium.

AIDS patients have benefited from recent advances in drug therapies that have ended the one-time death sentence for the HIV virus.

Since 1996, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation has used the hospice for offices.

At today s service, the Los Angeles Gay Men s Chorus was expected to perform in memory of the hundreds who died there, including 140 chorus members.

Seven balloons one for each year the hospice was in business were also to be released at sunset.

Great Moments Can Be Small Moments – A Hospice Volunteer – s

    #hospice stories

    #

We worked everything out as she wanted; her doctor cooperated with us. A living will was drawn up, but at the time, a living will was not recognized in the state. She died at home with no tubes to keep her alive; her doctor or a nurse came in regularly to administer drugs for pain. My sister died with dignity.

The above is all provided with hospice care. But, my sister died in 1978, and there was no hospice as yet. Elizabeth Kubler Ross was talking about a different way of dying but it was not yet accepted.

I never forgot the experience of watching a loved one die.

Thirty years later, after I retired from work, I found I was tired of playing Bunco and cards. I wanted something more in my life. I contacted Casa de la Luz Hospice and became a volunteer. Now, I don’t think I have done anything more important in my life. I had been conditioned to think that my life revolved around the special moments—marriage, raising children, children graduating, more marriages, and then grandchildren. These things are all important and worth remembering. But, by becoming a hospice volunteer, I have learned that great moments can be what may be a small moment. I am thinking of being in the Casa de la Luz Inpatient Unit, sitting vigil. The harpist came in and began to play; I was near the patient. The patient opened her eyes and asked me, “Am I in Heaven now?” I replied, “No. Not yet.” That was a moment, small to others, but big to me that I will not forget.

It doesn’t take me long to become involved with a patient. It’s important to me to learn about the patient’s past, family, likes, dislikes, and what makes the patient smile. The patient learns that I am there to help, to listen, and to be quiet—whatever the patient needs. We share experiences, have new experiences, and all is confidential. I’m surprised, sometimes, at what I hear.

Each patient is different and has different needs. For example, if I am told a patient isn’t eating enough, then I arrange my visits around the lunch hour so that I can encourage the patient to eat. You’d be surprised how many patients now eat dessert first and then their lunch. On holidays I try to dress the season—maybe a Halloween shirt, a Santa hat, or red, white and blue for the 4 th of July. Little things mean a lot to a terminally ill individual who is alone and has outlived his/her family and friends.

I am also a knitter. I love to knit prayer shawls and afghans for our hospice patients. I have a memory afghan that I knitted a couple of years ago. It is made up of 20 individual squares, each knitted with a different pattern and then sewn together. Each of the squares was knitted while I visited my patients. I treasure it.

I carry a hospice bag with me at all times. In it I have a book to read, crossword puzzles, snacks and water, and of course, my knitting. As a vigil volunteer, I never know how long my visit will be. I like to be available day or night to keep vigil with a dying patient. If I’m going for a companion visit with a patient, I try to keep it to one or two hours. I watch to see how the patient is holding up; is he/she looking tired? I will drive anywhere to see a patient. Distance is not a problem to me.

I cannot explain the reward I receive by comforting someone who is in need. I just know that the reward is huge, and I think my patients can “feel” my energy.

Being a hospice volunteer is not for everyone. But, to me and the other volunteers, our rewards are well worth it.

Often, I am asked, “How can you watch someone die?” My reply is, “I don’t watch a patient die; I believe that I’m there to help them pass on to the next stage of life.”

    Slenderman s Shadow: Hospice

Slenderman’s Shadow: Hospice takes the gameplay of Slender, and puts it in a creepy deserted Hospice. It features the Slenderman, and uses the same idea of having to find notes hidden around that you have to find before Slenderman drives you insane.

The developers admit their debt to the original game, but while Slenderman’s Shadow: Hospice is better than Slenderman’s Shadow: Sanatorium, it’s still not Slender. This is still a scary game – the dark Hospice is scary enough without any monsters in it!

So should you download Slenderman’s Shadow: Hospice? If you’re looking for more scary chills, the answer is yes, even if it’s not quite as good as Slender. The developers are promising more maps in the future, so I hope there is more imagination and variation in them.

    Learn More About the Florida SHIP Program #s #h #i #p #mortgage

    #

Many states have programs to help residents of the state purchase a new home. In Florida this is the S.H.I.P. or State Housing Initiative Partnership, Program. The program was established by the William E. Sadowski Affordable Housing Act of 1992 which provided for a dedicated revenue source with which local governments could help make housing more affordable.

There are several criteria that must be met for one to be eligible for the Florida SHIP program. Applicants may not have owned a home in the previous three years, they must not be purchasing property that will be occupied by a tenant other than themselves, use the home that is to be purchased as a primary resident, and meet the income eligibility requirements based on family size. The program is designed to help those family with incomes ranging from very low to moderate.

As with all things associated with buying a new home there are some general guidelines as well. Ones credit history must be adequate for mortgage purposes, the mortgage must not exceed the appraisal price of the home, and the home must be in good condition.

County governments are given money each year as long as they have a local housing assistance plan. They also usually have to ensure that mortgage payments don’t exceed thirty percent of the median income of the area. The money can be used for a variety of uses including new construction, down payments, closing costs, and mortgage buy-downs. The local governments are required to use the funds for certain demographics based on what the money will be used for and where.

Another important factor to consider is that the Florida SHIP program is essentially a loan. This loan must be repaid if the property is not held for at least twenty years.

Signing up for the Florida SHIP program is relatively simple. The process begins in the county office for housing assistance. This can be located through the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development. Most Florida banks, mortgage companies, and real estate agents are also familiar with the program and can assist home buyers in finding and filling out the appropriate applications.

Had Your Credit Card Hacked Lately?

My credit card information was just stolen — again. This is the fifth time in the past three years, which, if polling my Facebook friends is any indication, is about par for the course. It happens to everyone, it seems, about once every nine months. And for the record, each time I was hacked, my credit card was still physically in my possession.

There’s no need to tell you what a pain in the ass this is, but I will anyway. You have to switch all direct billings from the old card to a new card — and you invariably forget a few which means you get dinged with late fees. You also have to update all those online shopping sites where you have your credit card info stored. And of course you have to check all three credit scoring sites to see if the theft is causing you any lingering damage. In terms of inconvenience, credit card theft is just one Dante circle removed from losing your whole wallet and having to cancel and replace everything.

The good news is that none of my five thefts have cost me a penny, for which I am very grateful. And in four of the five instances, it was Chase — my credit card provider — that discovered the fraud and told me about it. I hadn’t had a clue.

In all five cases, Chase closed my account, issued me a new one on the spot and sent me new cards overnight. I get the idea that they have an Amazon-size warehouse full of customer service reps who do nothing all day but close accounts that have been infiltrated by thieves.

In my most recent theft, most of the charges were made in Tokyo and they included a dating app, some junk food bought in a mini-mart, and a bunch of other small purchases. The way credit card thieves frequently work is to first test the waters with small purchases to see if they go undetected before they try to charge something larger — you know, felony-like larger. In my case, it was a stay in an expensive hotel in Beverly Hills. Nope, I told the helpful Chase rep, I’ve never been to Japan or an expensive hotel in Beverly Hills.

I can’t complain about Chase’s fraud detection unit; they seem to be right on top of things. But what I don’t get is why this keeps happening and why there doesn’t appear to be much of an effort to catch the bad guys. And I certainly don’t mean to single out Chase. Credit card fraud is an equal opportunity crime. No one is immune and it certainly doesn’t matter which lender you have although different cards hold you to different levels of liability.

Given the prevalence of the problem, where’s the prosecution? For the number of thefts to be this widespread, doesn’t it mean that people see this as a crime that’s easy to get away with?

The Nilson Report puts credit and debit card fraud at $11.27 billion in losses in 2012. That’s certainly nothing to sneeze at.

In fact, credit card fraud — along with national security as it relates to terrorism and identity theft — are the top two things we most worry about, says Unisys. Almost 40 percent of us were deeply concerned about the security of shopping and banking online.

How are these thieves doing it? Sometimes they just outfox you, technologically. They install skimmers in ATMs or at gas station pumps when no one is around that record credit card information surreptitiously. The information is later resold to criminals who create counterfeit
cards or charge items over the phone or the Internet.

Other times, though, it is simply you being careless. So what can you do about it (besides paying cash for everything)?

    1. Make sure no one is looking over your shoulder when you are paying with a credit card in stores. The Department of Justice’s website says that this is a still a common way to steal credit card numbers. It’s easy to get distracted.

    2. Lower your voice, or better yet, keep your mouth shut.
Limit what you say on your mobile phone in public. Thieves get ahold of people’s credit card numbers by listening to cardholders’ conversations with hotel or rental car companies, according to the Department of Justice. Instead of holding those conversations within earshot, move to a quiet place. Never recite your credit card information in a busy lobby or from the back of a cab.

    3. Get a home shredder.
Yes, it’s come to that. Destroy every check and credit card or bank statement before throwing them in the trash. Some thieves are dumpster divers, says the DOJ. It only takes one stray receipt to give a criminal all the access he or she needs.

    4. Watch where you eat.
Dishonest wait staff have been known to use hidden or handheld devices to copy your credit card for later counterfeiting. They are often tied to a local crime ring, or seasonal and transient workers, said KrebsonSecurity.com .

    Advance Fee Fraud

The Scam . The con artist sends a letter or email — purportedly only to a few recipients but actually to several thousand — making an offer that would result in a large payoff for the victim. The details vary, but generally the story is that a person, often the wife or son of a deposed African dictator, knows about some unclaimed fortune that they are willing to share with the scam victim in return for an advanced fee (e.g. bail money for the imprisoned millionaire). Once money starts coming in, the con artist will continue asking for more, claiming that problems have arisen. How To Protect Yourself . The FBI advises that if you “receive a letter from Nigeria asking you to send personal or banking information, send the letter to the U.S. Secret Service, your local FBI office or U.S. Postal Inspection Service.” You can also register a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission’s Complaint Assistant here.

    BSC Toolkit for Hotel:

    BSC Toolkit for Hotel

Do you run a business in the hotel industry? Would you like to monitor and improve your business’s performance with special metrics? If so, then you need to know about the BSC Toolkit for Hotels.

Any business can benefit from using a Balanced Scorecard with well-designed Key Performance Indicators (or, KPIs). But succeeding in the hotel industry calls for different indicators than most other industries.

For instance, a good hotelier might focus on guest satisfaction, staff efficiency, and quality leisure services, rather than supply chain management or contractor availability.

So, the BSC Toolkit for Hotels starts with 18 complete Balanced Scorecards. including 298 Key Performance Indicators all designed specifically to quantify the factors that matter most in hotel management.

The scorecards in the toolkit fall into four broad categories:

    • General Hotel Management, including your help desk, HR, and facilities departments.
    • Competitor Analysis, including benchmarking and market research.
    • Hotel Clients, including customer value perceptions, loyalty, and profitability.
    • Leisure Services, including tennis, skiing, golf, and swimming pools.

Each scorecard combines 12 to 16 KPIs to give you a clear, accurate picture of your hotel’s performance in one of these specific areas. Using these indicators, your CEO can define strategic goals for the whole company, and then delegate complete scorecards with appropriate KPIs to lower-level managers in each department. That means all of your business units will be able to work together to meet your goals, track your business performance, and help the company grow. These balanced scorecards can even show you where you may need to invest additional resources to keep your company’s progress on track.

    More guides and recommendations

But that’s only the beginning. The BSC Toolkit for Hotels also includes twenty-five recommendations for improvements that are proven to add value for guests and increase productivity for hotels. Each recommendation includes an analysis of how and why this new feature will improve your productivity, and a step-by-step implementation strategy to help you put it into practice in your hotel.

For example, we’ll show you how to create loyalty programs, currency-exchange services, transportation services, and spa facilities, and how to use these features to grow your business.

As a free bonus, we’ll even include a copy of our ebook. Guide for Training KPI, which will help you to plan your Balanced Scorecard training program. We’ll help you show your staff how to record KPI data, and we’ll help you show your managers how to evaluate their scorecard results. We’ll even help you to prepare your managers to keep their business units focused and productive.

    Hotel KPI Summary

With 18 Balanced Scorecards. 298 Key Performance Indicators. 25 recommendations. and a free ebook, the BSC Toolkit for Hotels includes everything you need to build an effective Balanced Scorecard, measure and improve your business performance, reach your business goals, and succeed in the hotel industry. S Corp vs, s corporation versus llc.#S #corporation #versus #llc

    #

What would you like to talk about?

    S corporation versus llc

    S Corp vs. LLC

If you are the only owner of your business, you may have decided to form a limited liability company, or LLC, to protect your personal assets. But you may also have heard that, for tax purposes, you should be an “S corporation.”

This article will explain the differences between the two business classifications, and also show you how you can form a single-member LLC and still take advantage of S corp. taxation.

The exact LLC definition varies slightly from state to state but, basically, an LLC is a business entity that is legally separate from its owners, who are known as “members.” An LLC can have one member or many members.

Small business owners often choose to form an LLC instead of a corporation because LLCs offer more flexibility in the way they are managed and usually have fewer recordkeeping and reporting obligations than corporations.

    What is an S corporation?

Unlike an LLC or a C corporation, an S corporation is not a type of business entity. The S corp. designation refers to the way a business has chosen to be taxed under the Internal Revenue Code.

For tax purposes, the IRS classifies businesses as sole proprietorships, partnerships, C corporations, or S corporations. There is no “LLC” tax classification and, therefore, LLCs are taxed as though they are another type of business.

The IRS automatically taxes single-member LLCs as sole proprietorships and multi-member LLCs as partnerships. But an LLC can also choose to be taxed as a C corporation or as an S corporation.

What’s the difference between sole proprietorship LLC taxes and LLC taxed as S corp. taxes? For many small businesses, the main difference is in the way business owners pay Medicare and Social Security taxes—also known as “self employment taxes.” Some LLC owners can save money on these taxes by choosing S corp. taxation.

If a Single-Member LLC Is Taxed as a Sole Proprietorship

The LLC member reports business income and expenses on his or her personal income tax return and pays personal income tax on company profits. The member is considered self-employed and thus is responsible for paying Social Security and Medicare taxes on those profits.

(As of 2016, self-employed individuals pay a 12.4 percent Social Security tax on the first $118,500 of income, and a 2.9 percent Medicare tax on all income, with an additional 0.9 percent Medicare tax imposed on high earners. Employees are subject to these same taxes, but the employer pays half and the the employee pays half.)

If a Single-Member LLC Is Taxed as an S Corporation

The member can be considered an employee of the business. An owner-employee must be paid a reasonable salary. The LLC will report the salary as a business expense, and the owner will report both the salary and any remaining business profit on his or her personal tax return.

However, unlike the sole proprietor LLC owner who must pay Medicare and Social Security taxes on all profits, the S corporation and its owner will only pay these taxes on the owner’s salary. The remaining profits are not subject to these taxes.

    Here’s One Example

Suppose you are an LLC owner taxed as a sole proprietor and your business makes $100,00 profit. You will report $100,000 of income, and you will pay Social Security tax and Medicare tax on the entire $100,000.

Now suppose you have elected to be taxed as an S corp. and have determined that your reasonable salary is $50,000. Your salary is a business expense, so the business now has a $50,000 profit. You will still report $100,000 of income [$50,000 of salary plus $50,000 of profit], but you and your business will only pay Social Security and Medicare taxes on your $50,000 salary.

S Corp. or LLC—Which Is Right for You?

The IRS’s S corporation definition makes it clear that not every business qualifies to be taxed as an S corp. Most single-member LLCs will qualify, but you can’t choose S corp. taxes if any of these apply to your single-member LLC:

    • It is a foreign LLC
    • The owner is a nonresident alien
    • It is structured so that the owner is actually a corporation or partnership

(Multi-member LLCs that have more than 100 members also cannot be taxed as S corporations.)

To evaluate the benefits of S corp. vs. LLC taxation, you must consider whether changing to S corp. tax status will save you money. Find out what a reasonable salary would be for a person who does what you do. The IRS scrutinizes owner-shareholder salaries, so it is important not to set an artificially low salary for yourself. Then ask, if you paid yourself that salary, would your business have any profit left over? If the answer is no, then S corp. taxation may not help you.

If your business profits are greater than your reasonable salary, S corp. taxation may save you money. Consider also that your tax return will be somewhat more complex and, if you don’t have other employees, you will have to set up tax withholding. An accountant can advise you on other benefits and consequences of choosing LLC vs. S corp. taxation for your business.

If you’ve already formed your LLC but are unhappy with the tax consequences headed your way, you can change your tax status. In general, you can elect LLC S corp. status at any time during the tax year prior to the year you want the election to take effect, or during the first two and a half months of the current year. New businesses have approximately 75 days to elect a different tax status.

Before deciding on S corporation vs. LLC taxation, be sure you carefully evaluate the various pros and cons and seek advice from a business lawyer or accountant.

Legalzoom can help you start a business. Whether you decide to start an LLC or start an S corp, the process is simple and affordable. If you’re not sure which business structure is right for you, our legal plan attorney can answer your questions about LLCs and S corps and help you decide.

Online Master’s Degree in School Guidance Counseling

While accredited online programs aren’t common, you can find some school guidance counseling master’s degree programs offered via the Web. Classes in psychology and counseling methods plus clinical experiences can prepare you for a career as a school and vocational counselor. Schools offering Counseling degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

Can I Earn My School Guidance Counseling Master’s Degree Online?

There aren’t many online master’s degree programs in school guidance counseling, but the Council for Accreditation of Counseling Related Educational Programs does accredit some programs, most of which are offered by for-profit schools. In these online guidance counseling master’s degree programs, you are often required to attend on-campus sessions periodically, and you usually still need to participate in internships and clinical experiences. This helps give you the clinical face-to-face experience necessary to work with school children.

Many universities around the U.S. offer campus-based school guidance counseling master’s degree programs. When you enroll in an on-campus guidance counseling master’s degree program, you’ll take lecture-based courses and spend time in clinical settings.

    What Will My Coursework Cover?

The courses you take in a school guidance counseling master’s degree program give you the background you need to help students handle academic, personal, social and family issues. You take courses in psychology, group counseling, alcohol and drug dependency, family structure and crisis intervention. Additionally, you learn about counseling children and teenagers. Counseling methods and guidance principles are also discussed.

Most school guidance counseling master’s degree programs include extensive real-world clinical practice, even if you find an online program. Some of these experiences could include role playing with classmates, projects and supervised clinical work. Additionally, you often need to undertake a research project and prepare a thesis to complete your master’s degree program.

What Kind of Career Will I Have?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), jobs for school and vocational counselors are predicted to increase about 8% between 2014 and 2024 (www.bls.gov ). School guidance counselors are increasingly being called on to work with students who have troubles at home or issues with drugs and alcohol, says the BLS. The middle 50% of school guidance counselors earned between $40,900 and $69,250 in May 2014.

State licensure or certification requirements for school guidance counselors vary by state, but you will need credentials in most cases. Some states also require you to have a teaching license, according to the BLS. If you’d like to advance, you can teach other counselors or move into school administration, both of which require a higher degree.

What’s home health care & what should I expect?

    What’s home health care?

Home health care is a wide range of health care services that can be given in your home for an illness or injury. Home health care is usually less expensive, more convenient, and just as effective as care you get in a hospital or skilled nursing facility (SNF).

Examples of skilled home health services include:

    • Wound care for pressure sores or a surgical wound
    • Patient and caregiver education
    • Intravenous or nutrition therapy
    • Injections
    • Monitoring serious illness and unstable health status

The goal of home health care is to treat an illness or injury. Home health care helps you get better, regain your independence, and become as self-sufficient as possible.

If you get your Medicare benefits through a Medicare health plan, check with your plan to find out how it gives your Medicare-covered home health benefits.

If you have a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy or other health insurance coverage, tell your doctor or other health care provider so your bills get paid correctly.

If your doctor or referring health care provider decides you need home health care, they should give you a list of agencies that serve your area. but must tell you whether their organization has a financial interest in any agency listed.

What should I expect from my home health care?

    • Doctor’s orders are needed to start care. Once your doctor refers you for home health services, the home health agency will schedule an appointment and come to your home to talk to you about your needs and ask you some questions about your health.
    • The home health agency staff will also talk to your doctor about your care and keep your doctor updated about your progress.
    • It’s important that home health staff see you as often as the doctor ordered.

Examples of what the home health staff should do include:

    • Check what you’re eating and drinking.
    • Check your blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, and breathing.
    • Check that you’re taking your prescription and other drugs and any treatments correctly.
    • Ask if you’re having pain.
    • Check your safety in the home.
    • Teach you about your care so you can take care of yourself.
    • Coordinate your care. This means they must communicate regularly with you, your doctor, and anyone else who gives you care.

    How Legal Aid Works

Legal Services Corporation (LSC) is an independent nonprofit established by Congress in 1974 to provide financial support for civil legal aid to low-income Americans. LSC promotes equal access to justice by providing funding to 133 independent non-profit legal aid programs in every state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. Territories. LSC grantees serve thousands of low-income individuals, children, families, seniors, and veterans in 813 offices in every congressional district. Read more about the vital role legal aid plays in a just America.

Fulfills Critical Need at Low Cost

Investing in civil legal aid provides access to justice—a fundamental American value, reflected in the first line of our Constitution and in the closing words of our Pledge of Allegiance. The need for civil legal assistance has never been greater. Today, low-income Americans continue to struggle to keep their jobs, stay in their homes, and provide basic necessities for their families. Without adequate funding for legal aid, low-income Americans will be unable to access courts effectively to protect their legitimate legal interests.

Assures Fairness in the Justice System

Civil legal aid provides access to legal help for people to protect their livelihoods, their health, and their families. Civil legal aid makes it easier to access information through easy-to-understand forms, legal assistance, representation, and self-help centers to enable people to know their rights – regardless of their income.

    Provides Critical Constituent Services

LSC grantees help constituents who live in households with annual incomes at or below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines. LSC-funded legal aid ensures that eligible constituents will not have to navigate the legal system alone. Eligible clients include the working poor, veterans and military families, homeowners and renters, families with children, farmers, the disabled, and the elderly.

    CSN – S Associate of Nursing Program #csn #nursing, #csn #s #associate

    #

    Yelp North Las Vegas

I ve reviewd the general reviews for CSN. Can anyone give me more specific information on their experience with the nursing program? I will be transferring credits from out of state and have lived here just over a year. Any advice. do s or don ts. I would appreciate anything you can pass along. All I ve heard is that it s extremely competitive. I have taken most of the prereqs. I only have Microbiology left.

I ve heard that they have a tough program but that it s comprehensive. I have also heard that they have one of the higher NCLEX pass rate in Nevada. If you re willing to work hard and put effort then you ll succeed no matter where you go. College is for adult learners and I believe you will get as much as you put into it so why pay more at a private school/University when good quality education is available at your local community college? My wife goes there and she has not said anything negative. She says that there are a lot of good quality, free resources available to students but she comments that most people, especially those who need it, do not take advantage of it. Free tutoring, online and on-campus resources! Take advantage of all they offer and put your time and effort, after all, you deserve what you ve paid for.

I just moved here and three of the nurses in my office were trained there, all seem very competent and that speaks volumes. I can ask specific opinions on the program itself, if you like.

If recommend finishing ALL your pre-reqs first. Micro is worth 5-10pts. If you re applying for full-time you ll need about 27-29pts. I got in to the part-time track (now called extended track and requires at least 29pts) with 31 pts out of 35. You get points based on GPA, grades in Biology, medical experience, pre-req completion. Once in the program, kiss your social life goodbye. Nursing program at CSN is what pushed me to drink a lot. it made me realize it was interrupting with my travels and drinking and I make the same money as a nurse right now so after 1 year into it, I left.

Roger T. Michael U. Cathy C. thank you so much for taking the time to give ur wonderful feed back. I visited the campus about a year ago and spoke with someone. I calculated my points based on the courses I have and had 29 pts. before my ACT stores added. So Cathy C you confirmed what I was thinking about getting micro out of the way first. That s good news. It s good to know that they have tutoring available. I ve never been good with math so two years ago I once again attempted to pass the pre cal. I started with the remedial math and got it done. So now my concern is that I haven t done any math in about two years and have to take the ACT. I m afraid I ve forgotten it all. Other than that I might be in good standing. Does anyone know whether there is a score requirement for the ACT. I can t remember.

Los Angeles, California Area Travel Information

Los Angeles is a place where people can mingle with movie stars, and shop where celebrities shop. Los Angeles is also a great place to take the family vacation as many amusement parks are just a short drive away. Los Angeles is one of the must-see destinations that offers something for travelers of any age as it features year round activities and attractions. Universal Studios Hollywood is one of the most popular Los Angeles attractions and the closest theme park to the Los Angeles area. Not only is it an amusement park but Universal Studios Hollywood is also a working movie and television studio. To get a taste of the magic of movie-making, visitors should take part in the Studio Tour which gives participants a close look at how movies are made, and Jaws might even pay you a visit as well. After a long day of enjoying all that LA has to offer, be sure to relax at one of our Los Angeles Hotels.

Britain’s best and worst hotel chains named in Which? poll

The survey of Which? readers, published today, saw hotel firms judged in nine categories, including cleanliness, customer service, food, and value for money.

Sofitel, the luxury arm of Novotel and the costliest chain to feature in the poll – with rooms prices at £144 a night, on average – took top honours. It scored five stars in seven categories for a total score of 83 per cent.

Other firms in the top five were Premier Inn with 82 per cent, Warner Leisure Hotels with 80 per cent, Hampton by Hilton with 78 per cent and Q Hotels, also with 78 per cent.

Premier Inn recently announced plans to roll-out a series of high-tech “hub” hotels . with the first due to open in Covent Garden next month.

Britannia Hotels propped up the table for the second year running, scoring just one star in five categories – bedrooms, bathrooms, cleanliness, communal areas and “description matching reality”.

Other poorly performing chains were Old English Inns/Hotels with 50 per cent, Principal Hayley Hotel with 55 per cent, and De Vere Hotels with 58 per cent.

Travelodge, one of Britain’s biggest hotel chains, also suffered, scoring 60 per cent, despite recently implementing a £57m overhaul of its rooms.

The cheapest hotel chain – Ibis, where rooms cost £32, on average – came 13th, out of 29.
