What Kinds of Telecommunications Bachelor’s Degrees Can I Pursue?

You can pursue a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications that leads to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Technology. Programs exist under a variety of titles – including information networking and telecommunication computer networking, telecommunications engineering and telecommunications – but the program content is generally very similar. Other programs may offer a bachelor’s degree in information technology with a concentration in telecommunications. Whatever the title, this type of program is usually offered through a school’s engineering department, though some may belong to a computer science department.

Some schools offer bachelor’s degree completion programs. These programs require you to have an associate’s degree for admission, typically in telecommunication or closely related field like electrical engineering. A few bachelor’s degree completion programs will allow you to enter the program as a freshman. You’ll earn both an associate’s degree and a bachelor’s degree through such programs.

Bachelor of science, bachelor of technology

Background in math or science, prerequisite courses in specific subjects may be required

Online programs are available; some programs include in-person attendance requirements

It’s possible to earn your telecommunications bachelor’s degree online or in a hybrid format, but these kinds of programs are quite rare. Some programs offer all required courses online. However, in a hybrid program, you may need to attend campus to complete certain lab requirements in-person. Other programs may require you to take proctored exams. This means you will either need to travel to campus to take your exams or find an approved individual near you that is willing to be your proctor.

Some programs offering online learning options may not offer all of the required classes online. In these cases, you may have to take some classes on campus. Or, you might complete the classes at a school close to you and transfer the credits to your primarily online bachelor’s degree program.

What Careers Can I Pursue?

A bachelor’s degree in telecommunications can prepare you for a career in telephone, broadcasting and other types of communication fields. You could work as an engineer for a cellular company, creating the latest generation of mobile communication networks. You might find employment as a software engineer, designing computer networks and communication systems. You might also work as a telecommunication consultant, systems analyst or field engineer.

Essential Information

Fully-online bachelor’s degree programs in physician assisting are rare to nonexistent, although some on-campus programs may permit some requirements to be completed online. Bachelor’s programs in the healthcare field are rarely offered entirely online, with a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences being one of the few exceptions. Clinical experience is a major component of most bachelor’s programs. Some programs may have specific undergraduate coursework prerequisites.

Fully-online programs in this field of study are more readily available at the master’s degree level. Most accredited physician assistant programs are, in fact, offered at the master’s degree level.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), physician assistants are required to be licensed in all states and must follow a specific course of education. After earning a bachelor’s degree and, typically, some work experience, physician assistants complete an accredited, 2-year educational program that typically leads to a master’s degree.

Physician Assistant Bachelor’s Degree

Physician assistant bachelor’s degree programs provide the scientific and administrative skills required to assist physicians in the clinical setting. Students explore the communication, problem-solving and critical reasoning necessary to address issues affecting patients of all ages. The challenges of working with the sick, as well as current issues affecting the practice of physician assistants are also explored.

Information and Requirements

Most institutions require bachelor’s candidates to complete prerequisite coursework in the life sciences. Some schools may require students to have previous health care experience. Students also participate in internships in a clinical setting to gain practical experience in the field.

Online elective courses require reliable access to a computer with up-to-date software and hardware, as well as an Internet connection. Word processing software, such as Microsoft Word, is typically recommended, but not required.

Common Courses

Bachelor’s students examine current issues that affect the physician assistant. They gain practical knowledge of the scientific and administrative theories that guide the discipline. Core coursework covers topics such as microbiology, biochemistry and life span development; however, bachelor’s degree programs for physician assistants generally only allow for some prerequisite or elective coursework to be completed online.

Anatomy and Physiology

Students explore the organization and basic functionality of the human body through study of the 11 organ systems. The curriculum focus includes overviews of the nervous system, circulatory and respiratory systems, tissue structure, brain functionality and cellular metabolism. A detailed examination of the human life span is also included.

Principles of Chemistry

In this online course, students are provided with a top-line overview of the theoretical and practical principles of inorganic chemistry. The material in this course serves as a foundation for further study in the subject.

Career Information

Graduates of a bachelor’s degree program are qualified to seek a position as a licensed physician assistant under supervision of a physician. The BLS projected job growth of 30%, much faster than the average for all occupations, for physician assistants from 2014-2024. As of May 2015, the BLS reported, the median annual salary of physician assistants was $98,180.

Continuing Education Information

Opportunities for further study exist in fully online and hybrid program formats. Master’s degree programs provide advanced theoretical and clinical instruction, as well as prepare students to sit for the certification exam offered through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and apply for state licensure. Students are required to complete a field experience to satisfy degree requirements. Continuing Medical Education (CME) courses are available in both online and hybrid formats covering topics such as prescribing of controlled substances and pain management.

Bachelor’s degree programs for physician assistants cannot be found entirely online as they typically require extensive in-person training. Students study human anatomy, physiology and the basics of chemistry, preparing them to work as licensed physician assistants.

Colleges in Tampa, Florida

There are at least 25 Tampa colleges serving tens of thousands of students each year. Institutions range considerably in both size and focus, but include both public and private colleges, universities, and technical or vocational schools. The following are just three of the largest colleges in Tampa (by enrollment):

  • University of South Florida. The University of South Florida is a public college offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in a broad range of subjects. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), USF’s 2013-2014 school year enrollment neared 41,500 students. Total estimated annual cost of tuition and fees that year was $6,410 for in-state students and $17,324 for out-of-state students.
  • Hillsborough Community College. HCC is a public, two-year community college offering primarily Associate degrees and certificates. Programs are designed with a mind for transfer to four-year institutions or workforce entry, depending on the discipline. The NCES reports that HCC’s total 2013-2014 enrollment exceeded 26,500. Total cost of tuition and fees that year was $2,506 for in-state students and $9,111 for out-of-state students.
  • University of Tampa. The University of Tampa is a private, not-for-profit institution offering Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees and post-master’s certificates. The NCES reports a total 2013-2014 enrollment of just under 7,300 students, most of whom were undergraduates. As a private college, UT’s tuition and fees are the same for both in- and out-of-state students: $25,772 total in 2013-2014. On-campus room and board cost an estimated $9,388 that year.

Prospective students can learn more about other public and private universities in the Tampa area below, or by visiting NCES online.

Trade and Vocational Schools in Tampa

Trade and vocational schools provide students with career-ready skills in areas like Allied Health; Automotive Repair; Legal Assistance; Criminal Justice; and more. There are several of these types of career colleges across Tampa, though many also offer online degrees for students living outside of the area. The following are two of the largest Tampa, Florida colleges providing technical or vocational training, as reported by the NCES.

  • Ultimate Medical Academy – Tampa. The Ultimate Medical Academy is a private, two-year institution offering certificates and Associate degrees in health-related fields, like Medical and Dental assisting; Nursing; and Healthcare Management. Note that not all career schools report enrollment information, so there may be other large institutions not represented. We recommend contacting prospective schools directly to learn more.

Careers in Tampa

Tampa colleges are an investment that tends to pay-off in both earnings and overall employment. According to 2013 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Associate degree holders earned about $125 more per week on average than workers with high school diplomas alone. Bachelor’s degree holders earned about $450 more that year, and Master’s degree holders earned nearly $700 more, or about double the average weekly earnings for high school graduates. The disparity is even greater for workers with professional and doctoral degrees. The same trend also holds true for employment figures: unemployment rates tend to decline with more education.

The following careers reported the highest mean earnings in Tampa in May of 2013, per the BLS.

Most of the careers featured above require advanced doctoral or professional degrees, but some of the most popular careers in Tampa, such as nursing, information technology, and criminal justice, require just two- or four-year degrees.

What would the perfect hotel stay in Charleston, SC, include? How about a white-gloved doorman welcoming you into an antebellum mansion, where you can relax in period-style rooms furnished with four-poster beds? The Planters Inn in Charleston delivers this experience—and best of all, it’s not as expensive as it seems.

With its central location and overflowing southern charm, it’s no surprise that Planters Inn is a favorite of travelers. But its affordable rates have catapulted the 64-room property to No. 6 on the list of America’s Best Affordable Hotels, as voted by Travel + Leisure readers in the World’s Best Awards Survey. What s the difference between a hotel, motel and inn?

‘Time Travel’ is the basic difference between a Hotel, Motel and Inn.

Inns – Today’s hotels were popularly started in 500 AD known as ‘INN’. (details kindly refer my answer to question – Starts of Inns, in the link Prashant G. Arabhavi s answer to At what time period hotels/inns were started? )

Today’s Inns stay as before located / attached to fuel / gas stations or garage, with rooms not more than 15–20, building not more than 1st floor, food provided is snacks, basic facility of TV. And most of these stations / garages are also attached to a small super market / provisional store.

Hotels – In the early past (40–50 centuries) due to Industrial Revolution and aviation, these Inns took a different shape in terms of structure, comfort, convenience, luxury, facilities, cleanliness, competition, bla bla bla, which are called ‘HOTELS’ today.

Motels – The above hotels grew as a business and profession, forming chains, brands and groups. This specialised further to get the classification / types as per the location. Today’s hotels which are located by the highway are called ‘MOTELS’.

  1. Hotels which are floating (off-course in water) are called ‘FLOATELS’
  2. Hotels located in urban cities are called ‘COMMERCIAL HOTELS’
  3. Hotels located by the airport and railway station are called ‘TRANSIT HOTELS’
  4. Hotels located in the holiday destination and in relaxing environment are called ‘RESORTS’.

  • Inn is a low class hotel (limited facilities, usually small number of rooms)
  • Hotel is a premium accommodation plus extended facilities (e.g. spa, pool, 24/7 concierge service, etc.)

Sorry for being short.

The precursor to the modern hotel was the inn of medieval Europe. For a period of about 200 years from the mid-17th century, coaching inns served as a place for lodging for coach travelers. Inns began to cater for richer clients in the mid-18th century. One of the first hotels in a modern sense was opened in Exeter in 1768. Hotels proliferated throughout Western Europe and North America in the 19th century, and luxury hotels began to spring up in the later part of the century.

Inns are generally establishments or buildings where travelers can seek lodging and, usually, food and drink. They are typically located in the country or along a highway.

The term inn historically characterized a rural hotel which provided lodging, food and refreshments, and accommodations for travelers horses. To capitalize on this nostalgic image many typically lower end and middling modern motor hotel operators seek to distance themselves from similar motels by styling themselves inns , regardless of services and accommodations provided. Examples are Premier Inn, Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn, Days Inn and Knights Inn.

Inns in Europe were possibly first established when the Romans built their system of Roman roads two millennia ago. Some inns in Europe are several centuries old. In addition to providing for the needs of travelers, inns traditionally acted as community gathering places.

Historically, inns in Europe provided not only food and lodging, but also stabling and fodder for the travelers horses. Famous London examples of inns include the George and the Tabard. There is however no longer a formal distinction between an inn and other kinds of establishment. Many pubs use the name inn , either because they are long established and may have been formerly coaching inns, or to summon up a particular kind of image.

A hotel is an establishment that provides lodging paid on a short-term basis. Facilities provided may range from a basic bed and storage for clothing, to luxury features like en-suite bathrooms. Larger hotels may provide additional guest facilities such as a swimming pool, business centre, childcare, conference facilities and social function services. Hotel rooms are usually numbered (or named in some smaller hotels and B Bs) to allow guests to identify their room. Some hotels offer meals as part of a room and board arrangement. In the United Kingdom, a hotel is required by law to serve food and drinks to all guests within certain stated hours. In Japan, capsule hotels provide a minimized amount of room space and shared facilities.

A motel is a hotel designed for motorists and usually has a parking area for motor vehicles. Entering dictionaries after World War II, the word motel, coined as a portmanteau contraction of motor hotel , originates from the Milestone Mo-Tel of San Luis Obispo, California (now called the Motel Inn of San Luis Obispo), which was built in 1925. The term referred initially to a type of hotel consisting of a single building of connected rooms whose doors faced a parking lot and in some circumstances, a common area or a series of small cabins with common parking. Motels are often individually owned, though motel chains do exist.

As large highway systems began to be developed in the 1920s, long-distance road journeys became more common, and the need for inexpensive, easily accessible overnight accommodation sites close to the main routes led to the growth of the motel concept. Motels peaked in popularity in the 1960s with rising car travel, only to decline in response to competition from the newer chain hotels that became commonplace at highway interchanges as traffic was bypassed onto newly constructed freeways. Several historic motels are listed on the US National Register of Historic Places.

Note: Today it is not practical to draw a line to distinguish between an Inn, Hotel, and Motel. Many of the features of all of these may be found in a property today.

Britain’s ‘worst’ hotel chains named

Britannia Hotels has been named the worst hotel chain in Britain by the readers of Which? Travel, the consumer magazine.

The chain, which has 44 hotels in the UK, scored just 36 per cent in an online satisfaction survey conducted by readers of the magazine.

Britannia Hotels promotes itself as providing “affordable accommodation” but respondents described the chain’s hotel rooms as “shabby” and “run-down”.

The chain was rated across six categories and scored one star out of five, the lowest mark, for cleanliness, room fixtures and value for money.

Britannia guests were also surprised to find that a room with a window was £10 extra.

The second worst hotel chain was deemed to be Travelodge, which has 500 properties in the UK.

Travelodge received an overall customer score of 50 per cent but cleanliness, room fixtures and comfort received just two stars, while breakfast was awarded a dismal one star out of five by respondents.

Telegraph Travel has reviewed five Travelodge hotels in recent years, with the properties each receiving a rating of five or six out of ten.

We’ve visited just one Brittania Hotel: the Europa Gatwick, back in 2008. Fiona Duncan, our hotel reviewer, was not impressed.

A total of 8,267 Which? readers, who were also members of the magazine’s online community, took part in the survey.

The best-rated hotel chain was Q Hotels, which has 21 properties and 2,900 bedrooms in the UK.

Q Hotels, which offers “four star luxury” across the UK, scored 78 per cent overall and was awarded five stars out of five for cleanliness and room fixtures, but an average of three stars for value for money.

Other hotel chains to top the list include Radisson Blu Edwardian, which has more than 400 bedrooms in the UK across 14 hotels, achieved an overall score of 77 per cent and was the second highest rated hotel.

Premier Inn, with more than 650 hotels in the UK and 52,000 bedrooms, was the largest chain to feature and scored 76 per cent overall.

The UK’s worst hotel chains (overall customer score)

Britannia Hotels – 36 per cent
Travelodge – 50 per cent
Ramada (excluding Encore) – 51 per cent
PH Hotels (Principal Hayley Hotels) – 51 per cent
De Vere Village – 51 per cent

Slieve Donard (via the Glen River) – Northern Ireland s Highest Peak

Slieve Donard (via Glen River)

Route Description

Leave the car park in Donard Park heading towards the mountain and follow the Glen River uphill through old woodland of Scots Pine, Oak and Birch. At the first of 3 bridges, cross to the opposite bank.

Continue uphill through the forest, above a deep cut riverbed, for about 400m until another bridge is reached. The riverbank overhangs along this section so extra care is needed.

At this point cross back to the left hand side and resume journey uphill through the trees.

At the next bridge continue across the forest road and onto the rough track heading up towards the mountains, with thick forest on right (fenced), until a gate and stile is reached.

Cross the stile and follow the track above the river for about 2kms, heading towards the saddle between Donard and Commedagh.

At this point, the path crosses the river and continues uphill to the ‘Saddle’ where it meets the Mourne Wall.

At the Mourne Wall turn left and follow the wall steeply uphill towards the summit.

From the summit return by the same route, staying close to the wall until the Saddle is reached again. The cliffs on the north side of Donard known as Eagle Rocks should be avoided by walkers since the approaches are steep.

Return to Donard Park following the line of the Glen River.

Getting to the Start

Follow the one way system to the south end of Newcastle main street. Donard Car Park has ample parking.

Accessibility Grade

Managed to get to the top of Slieve Donard today. Still some snow against the wall.loads of couples climbing which was nice to see. It is also such a really quite place when the large groups have disappeared. Went from bloody bridge, first time so I do not know the Newcastle car park route. I decided against fell running it and it took me 7.20 11.10kms. my pace trebles backwards once I hit a hill. The view at the top was amazing, the sea was flat calm, Dublin, the sugar loaf, Scotland, isle of Man and Belfast and all the surrounding mountains visible. Although there are boggy areas, I do not know if boots which pull the legs off you are better than a decent pair of trainers, runners or gutties depending where you are from

My first ever proper hill/mountain walk, and my 47 year old knees are showing their age. The forest stage at the start is tougher than you would imagine, the next section is fine, the hike to the saddle isn’t easy and the final ascent along the wall required a good few short breaks. That being said, it was a wonderful experience filled with fabulous views and friendly hikers. I had hoped for a bit of cloud to move in as I reached the summit and the weather didn’t let me down. It went from clear skies to a downpour and 20m visibility in a heartbeat. Very glad to have decent waterproof clothing in the rucksack. All in all a great day. I will be back.
