Enterprise Resource Planning Software Leaders by Market Segment

For an additional market segmentation perceptive, the below summary points illustrate how the Top 5 ERP systems best line up with the small business, middle and enterprise customer market segments.

Epicor offers strong ERP software functionality along with several impressive Industry solutions for Professional Services Automation (PSA), financial services, hospitality management, retail, distribution, manufacturing, pharma and not for profit. In a late 2007 analyst release report, Epicor was recognized by Aberdeen as achieving the lowest TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) and total per user cost of software, services and maintenance for mid-size companies. In fact, the Epicor ERP solution came in at less than 50% of competing ERP products. We find the company’s channel strategy questionable which may necessitate more review for international buyers.

Infor is the mega company that surprising few ERP software buyers are aware of. Largely based on an aggressive acquisition and roll-up strategy, Infor is the third largest ERP manufacturer – behind only SAP and Oracle. Infor is a vertically oriented software publisher with several different ERP software systems and particularly strong distribution, supply chain management (SCM), lean manufacturing, complex manufacturing and process manufacturing solutions.

SAP is the largest and most recognized Fortune 1000, Global 5000 and enterprise market share leader. The company has achieved its success due to its extremely deep accounting and distribution software suites along with tightly integrated financials, manufacturing, human resource, payroll and customer relationship management software systems. While the company claims that its retains significant middle market share, its definition of ‘middle market’ is more in lines with other definition of the enterprise market.

Oracle is the world’s second largest business applications maker – and is clearly out to take the lead role from SAP. Bolstered by its acquisitions of PeopleSoft (with JD Edwards) and Siebel Systems, Oracle has collected an impressive customer list and portfolio of intellectual property. Now the real work to keep those customers and integrate those products (project Fusion) is underway with results expected very soon. Expect several more acquisition and integration project announcements from Oracle over the coming months.

The ERP Evolution Continues

The ERP systems evolution is taking an unusual turn. For those that may remember, ERP applications were originally introduced as mainframe and host-based monolithic applications in the 1970’s and 1980’s. McCormack and Dodge and MSA (Management Sciences America) were fierce competitors and between them owned the lions share of the ERP software market. The two rivals ultimately merged to become Dun Bradstreet Software. Following the merger of the number one and number two market share leaders, Dun Bradstreet Software believed itself to be an unstoppable ERP application titan, however, was soon thereafter completely replaced by the introduction of client/server applications and later sold to Geac for a marginal fee valued largely on existing customer software maintenance contracts.

Starting in November 1992, the client/server ERP applications began appearing from no-name or lesser name software manufacturers such as Platinum Software, PeopleSoft, Oracle Financials, Baan and SAP. These distributed software and GUI interfaced applications grew at the expense of the mainframe ERP systems. Midrange systems such as the AS/400 continued to survive, however, their growth days were clearly over. The most notable of the client/server ERP players – SAP and Oracle Financials – stand alone as today’s ERP application market share leaders. However, now they too are threatened by new technology paradigms from software as a service (SaaS) competitors and open source software.

At the turn of the century, SaaS ERP systems were introduced as a new pricing and systems management alternative to client/server systems. While originally weak in software depth and scalability, leading ERP systems such as Aplicor, Intacct and NetSuite have evolved to deliver functionally equivalent ERP applications, however, with the advertised advantages of the SaaS delivery model (e.g. subscription pricing, hosted delivery, fewer internal IT resources, etc.). These leading SaaS ERP applications are clearly replacing the middle market client/server ERP systems (most notably the Microsoft ERP products of Great Plains, Solomon, Navision and Axapta) in many situations, however, are not yet mature enough to take on the industry giants Oracle or SAP.

Open Source ERP has yet to prove itself as a replacement to commercial ERP applications. While open source ERP applications are clearly growing, they are more often than not used to create first time business systems for young companies or replace antiquated custom built ERP applications with new custom built ERP applications this time built on open source technology.

While Microsoft, Oracle and SAP would be wise to reference the then seemingly unstoppable power of their Dun Bradstreet Software predecessor, they appear to instead exhibit a similar behavior to Dun Bradstreet. All three have scoffed at the SaaS delivery model and mocked the open source initiative. While they are now finally showing some interest, that interests appears to belittle more than dipping their toe in the water and their strategies appear to be more of a defensive tactic designed to slow down the market share loss of their customer base to these new ERP models. We suspect there will be a turning point where protection of their self interests will prove futile and these industry heavyweights will embrace at least the SaaS model and possibly show some substantive interests in the open source model.

What is pen test (penetration testing)? Definition from #open #source #penetration #testing

#

pen test (penetration testing)

Penetration testing (also called pen testing) is the practice of testing a computer system, network or Web application to find vulnerabilities that an attacker could exploit.

Download this free guide

The Benefits of a DevOps Approach

Bringing development and IT ops together can help you address many app deployment challenges. Our expert guide highlights the benefits of a DevOps approach. Explore how you can successfully integrate your teams to improve collaboration, streamline testing, and more.

By submitting your personal information, you agree that TechTarget and its partners may contact you regarding relevant content, products and special offers.

You also agree that your personal information may be transferred and processed in the United States, and that you have read and agree to the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy .

Pen tests can be automated with software applications or they can be performed manually. Either way, the process includes gathering information about the target before the test (reconnaissance), identifying possible entry points, attempting to break in (either virtually or for real) and reporting back the findings.

The main objective of penetration testing is to determine security weaknesses. A pen test can also be used to test an organization’s security policy compliance, its employees’ security awareness and the organization’s ability to identify and respond to security incidents.

Penetration tests are sometimes called white hat attacks because in a pen test, the good guys are attempting to break in.

Pen test strategies include:

Targeted testing
Targeted testing is performed by the organization’s IT team and the penetration testing team working together. It’s sometimes referred to as a lights-turned-on approach because everyone can see the test being carried out.

External testing
This type of pen test targets a company’s externally visible servers or devices including domain name servers (DNS), e-mail servers, Web servers or firewalls. The objective is to find out if an outside attacker can get in and how far they can get in once they’ve gained access.

Internal testing
This test mimics an inside attack behind the firewall by an authorized user with standard access privileges. This kind of test is useful for estimating how much damage a disgruntled employee could cause.

Blind testing
A blind test strategy simulates the actions and procedures of a real attacker by severely limiting the information given to the person or team that’s performing the test beforehand. Typically, they may only be given the name of the company. Because this type of test can require a considerable amount of time for reconnaissance, it can be expensive.

Double blind testing
Double blind testing takes the blind test and carries it a step further. In this type of pen test, only one or two people within the organization might be aware a test is being conducted. Double-blind tests can be useful for testing an organization’s security monitoring and incident identification as well as its response procedures.

Related Terms

(1) Generically, open source refers to a program in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design free of charge, i.e. open. Open source code is typically created as a collaborative effort in which programmers improve upon the code and share the changes within the community. Open source sprouted in the technological community as a response to proprietary software owned by corporations.

(2) A certification standard issued by the Open Source Initiative (OSI) that indicates that the source code of a computer program is made available free of charge to the general public. The rationale for this movement is that a larger group of programmers not concerned with proprietary ownership or financial gain will produce a more useful and bug -free product for everyone to use. The concept relies on peer review to find and eliminate bugs in the program code, a process which commercially developed and packaged programs do not utilize. Programmers on the Internet read, redistribute and modify the source code, forcing an expedient evolution of the product. The process of eliminating bugs and improving the software happens at a much quicker rate than through the traditional development channels of commercial software as the information is shared throughout the open source community and does not originate and channel through a corporation’s research and development cogs.

OSI dictates that in order to be considered “OSI Certified” a product must meet the following criteria:

  • The author or holder of the license of the source code cannot collect royalties on the distribution of the program
  • The distributed program must make the source code accessible to the user
  • The author must allow modifications and derivations of the work under the program’s original name
  • No person, group or field of endeavor can be denied access to the program
  • The rights attached to the program must not depend on the program’s being part of a particular software distribution
  • The licensed software cannot place restrictions on other software that is distributed with it.

14-Sep-2013 – Cheyenne sources moved to git/Github [0032 ]

The Cheyenne codebase has been moved from svn/Googlecode to git/Github. The change was made to simplify contributions to Cheyenne, and to regroup my open source projects at the same place (like Red and CureCode ).

In the process of changing the backend building scripts to support git, we also extended the supported platforms for automated builds, we now supports Windows and Mac OSX. in addition to Linux. The new builds are generated twice a day, if new commits are found in the master branch.

Thanks very much to Tamas Herman for helping with the scripts coding and providing the Mac OSX machine, and thanks to the HackJam hackerspace group from Hong-Kong for the hosting!

Please find the latest Cheyenne builds on the updated Download page.

12-Aug-2013 – CORS support added [0031 ]

Thanks to the kind sponsoring of Alan Macleod, Cheyenne now has a module for handling Cross Origin Resource Sharing protocol, basically allowing Javascript to make requests to another domain than the one the script originated from.

In order to use the new mod-cors module, you need to:

  1. Uncomment the cors module line in global section of the httpd.cfg config file.
  2. Add at least one allow-cors directive in a virtual host settings block.

28-Nov-2011 – Websocket support upgraded to hybi-10 [0030 ]

The websocket communication protocol is quite a moving target, it changes several times a year, sometimes breaking compatibility with previous revisions. Cheyenne is now up-to-date and supports the last RFC revision (named “hybi-10”), starting from Cheyenne revision 155.

All protocol features have been implemented but some are not tested yet, as they require a custom-made client (the Javascript websocket API does not support those features yet AFAICT):

  • Ping/pong frames
  • Fragmented frames

The server-side user API has been left untouched, a ping command might be added later though. The websocket chat demo has been upgraded too and now supports Chrome 14+, FF8+ and IE10.

27-Nov-2011 – Cheyenne at PHP Tour 2011 [0029 ]

I have been invited a couple of days ago at PHP Tour 2011 event in Lille (France) to make a presentation of Cheyenne to the PHP community and demonstrate Cheyenne ability to interface with a PHP FastCGI server and serve PHP generated content. I had a great time with developers from PHP community and enjoyed great presentations from Zend engineers about their famous framework and cryptography support in PHP.

Here are my presentation slides (in french):

If you are experiencing issues seeing the slides in flash format, here’s a PDF version .

If you are wondering what slide 4 is about, it is just a warning for people confusing this Cheyenne server with the one embedded in the ADSL box of one of french ISP (which is just an Apache instance renamed, and that name used to appear when an internal error occured in the box).

8-Jun-2011 – Cheyenne at Chti’RUG2011 [0028 ]

I was at Chti’RUG2011 french event at Lille a week ago and did a presentation of Cheyenne. This is the same presentation I did at ReBorCon2011, just translated in french (available in PDF format ).

There is a french blog article by Olivier Auverlot talking about this meeting.

Unity is going away and GNOME is coming back

Canonical decided to drop Unity in favor of GNOME, which is probably not the best decision. I think that it s probably a mistake, but it was also an unavoidable move for the company.People have to keep in mind that Ubuntu for desktop was never profitable, and it s easy to see why. There are very few ways to monetize a free operating system. The only way to get some money out of it is to provide specialized support for companies, but that s also not a really profitable avenue. It s very likely that Canonical is making some money from its other products, especially the ones built for the.

The new Apple is a company that changes its mind and is not afraid to take a U-turn or even jump off a cliff

So, you think you know Apple? You think you can predict what their next move is and how the design is going to change?Think again. The new Apple is taking big steps towards. something else. Even for old Apple die-hards is hard to predict where the company is going. Yes, Apple has always been the company that brought something new, invented a new gadget or switched to a new connector just when you thought you got a new accessory, but this time. things are a bit different. There are two ways in which Apple has changed and became totally unpredictable. The hardware kinda lacks behind and we still.

And then, your heart stops beating for a few seconds

You watch TV all snuggled up under the super-soft blanket with your phone just next to you on the couch. It s a commercial break, and you snatch at the glass of wine on the coffee table when, suddenly, you hear a noise. It sounds like something just hit the ground. You don t look around, but in that half of second, you know it can t be good.It can be just two things. It s either the remote or the phone. You start praying it s the remote. It s not. It s the phone, and it s laying on the ground face down after what seemed to be like a pretty strong hit. Yo.

Here s a case for iPhone 7s, not iPhone 8

The first quarter of fiscal 2017 is the best ever for iPhone. Apple sold 78.3 million iPhones in the past few months. The revenue from the iPhone business alone topped $54.4 billion. The best model was, rather unexpectedly, the iPhone 7 Plus. But is that enough to make Apple a winner in the long run?Two very low quartersThe market will stagnate for Apple in the next couple of quarters. The first reason is obvious: no Black Friday, no Christmas or any other important holidays will help the iPhone business. Also, keep in mind that every iOS user will quit spending money on an 8-month-old device and wait.

Will Apple dedicate more time and money to the cloud? How about Siri and the Desktop computer line-up?

2016 was all about the MacBook. The computer that is going to change the future of ports and connectors was born. We have also got a phone with a missing headphone jack. For some users, this is a big downer. Others are happy with their AirPods. Next year seems to be a good one for the desktop computer. Will the Mac mini survive? Is the Mac Pro still up for a refresh?Siri on macOSSiri jumped from the iPhone to the Mac in 2016. It was a long-awaited move that failed to amaze users. Sure enough, the implementation is simple and elegant, just as Apple would do it, but the functionality lacks. Siri ca.

SIEM Tools

AlienVault Professional Threat Management S3000

The platform contains more than 30 open-source security tools built in and ready to go out of the box. We found this product to be quite easy to install.

LogLogic MX

This offers some exciting new features, including a full compliance manager, but more on that later. The LogLogic MX can collect data and logs from network devices, such as routers and firewalls, as well as many other sources, including intrusion detection system (IDS)/intrusion prevention system (IPS), Windows, Unix and load balancers.

LogRhythm

The LogRhythm appliance combines log management, SIEM, file integrity monitoring and host activity monitoring into a single integrated platform.

McAfee Enterprise Security Manager (ESM)

This product features a powerful correlation engine that is driven by an ultralight proprietary backend database. The ESM is able to gather, store and analyze logs and data from a large amount of sources and then correlate events based on rules, possible risk or historical trends.

Trustwave SIEM

The Trustwave SIEM appliance is designed to collect, normalize, analyze and store events and logs from a wide array of network devices and security products.

CorreLog Correlation Server v5.1.0

The CorreLog Server is a web-based solution that leverages browser technology to present an easy-to-use, multi-platform interface that stresses point-and-click simplicity for the harried network administrator.

Prism Microsystems EventTracker v7.2

Like many other SIEM products, EventTracker Enterprise uses a client server paradigm, where client systems report back to a server, which consolidates and normalizes events for further processing.

GFI Software GFI EventsManager 2012

The product is designed to do exactly as the name implies – manage events – and in the case of SIEM, those events can originate from any number of network-attached devices in the typical enterprise, whether they are servers, PCs, firewalls, appliances and so forth.

NetIQ Sentinel 7

Using the SIEM methodologies, NetIQ

SolarWinds Log Event Manager v5.3

SolarWinds is one of the smaller players in the SIEM market, but as a vendor specializing in system management and reporting tools, the company has the intelligence to effectively create a SIEM product.

Tenable Network Security Log Correlation Engine v3.6

The latest iteration of LCE can be considered something that is part of a bigger picture. Tenable refers to this as a unified security monitoring (USM) approach. Through this option, the company combines security management with log analysis and vulnerability scanning.

Tripwire Log Center v6.5

Like other products in the SIEM realm, Log Center is part of a larger product line that unifies compliance and security management. Still, the product can be used for the standalone process of SIEM, which many businesses not bound by compliance regulation only look to do.

At the core, SIEM tools take data from sources and get useful, actionable information from it. The SC Magazine Labs team tested popular ones currently on the market.

SC Media arms cybersecurity professionals with the in-depth, unbiased business and technical information they need to tackle the countless security challenges they face and establish risk management and compliance postures that underpin overall business strategies.

Baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr. and Kelly Ripken are divorced after nearly three decades

After almost 30 years of marriage, Hall of Famer and former Baltimore Oriole Cal Ripken Jr. and Kelly Ripken have divorced.

Her attorney says the split was finalized Thursday morning in the Baltimore County circuit court. Details about the settlement — Cal Ripken, 55, owns a minor-league team and a chain of sports complexes bearing his name and is reportedly worth $75 million — will not be made public since records were sealed and the division of property was outlined in a private contract.

The pair wed in 1987 and have two children, Rachel, 26, and Ryan, 22. Ripken was a homegrown baseball star known for a low-key public persona, and his wife was a presence at Orioles games and a fixture at his side through decades of charity events and appearances. Together, they projected an image of a wholesome, low-drama couple — a rarity in the volatile world of pro sports.

“Kelly has been a great mother to two fabulous children and a wonderful, faithful wife for the duration of the parties’ relationship, which lasted more than 30 years,” her attorney, Sanford Ain, said in a statement. “This is a difficult time for her and she asks that her privacy and the privacy of her children be respected.”

A spokesman for Cal Ripken said his client would have no comment on the matter. Cal Ripken, whose stamina earned him the moniker the “Iron Man,” broke Lou Gehrig’s consecutive-games record in 1995 when he played his 2,131st straight game. He’s been renting a home in Annapolis, his spokesman confirmed, a development that was first reported by the local Capital Gazette .

Ain says the pair have been separated for some time and that Kelly Ripken, 57, “looks forward to the next chapter ” in which she plans to focus on philanthropic efforts, particularly those related to women’s health. Kelly Ripken, who has publicly discussed being diagnosed 30 years ago with Graves’ disease, a thyroid condition, is the co-chair of Johns Hopkins annual women’s health conference and is the namesake of the Kelly G. Ripken program for thyroid patients at Johns Hopkins.

SAP’s HANA will lose the big data war without open source, as proven by 21 new security flaws

SAP has been boasting about its “revolutionary” big data platform, SAP HANA, for years. While its claims have always been a bit suspect, recent revelations that HANA is riddled with critical security flaws only reinforce the mantra that, when it comes to big data infrastructure, open source is best.

Most other companies get this, even hitherto proprietary giants like IBM. Will SAP get the memo in time to rejigger its approach to big data?

Probably not, which is why SAP customers should probably check out what open source has to offer.

(Almost) everything has open source inside

Even the most proprietary software generally has open source inside. That’s why Gartner analyst Martin Kihn can declare with utmost assurance that everything—everything—is open source now, to some degree:

I am willing to guess you—yes, you—would be shocked if you really understood to what extent that whizzy piece of expensive cloud software you’re using actually (deep, deep in its soul) was running on absolutely free, not-developed-here, open source technology that you—yes, you—could probably bang into something almost as useful if you only knew how to do it.

It’s also why you really, really shouldn’t be futzing with SAP HANA, or any other proprietary data infrastructure that tries to go it alone without the aid of the open source community. Cloudera chief strategy officer Mike Olson perhaps said it best :

There’s been a stunning and irreversible trend in enterprise infrastructure. No dominant platform-level software infrastructure has emerged in the last 10 years in closed-source, proprietary form.

Which brings us to. HANA.

Big data, big problems

HANA, SAP’s big data darling, has been the subject of controversy for some time. For years Wall Street analysts like Peter Goldmacher (formerly of Cowen Co.) have criticized SAP’s financial treatment of HANA, arguing that the legacy software vendor had been misrepresenting HANA revenue to project an “inflated growth rate.”

In short, he and others argued HANA’s zero-to-$1 billion rapid growth story was “highly, highly unlikely.”

But wait! It gets worse.

That’s because security firm Onapsis just uncovered 21 significant security flaws in HANA, eight of which it deemed “critical.”

How critical? Unless companies act to change system configurations, “Unauthenticated attackers could take full control of vulnerable SAP HANA systems, including stealing, deleting or changing business information, as well as taking the platform offline to disrupt key business processes.”

Not a cheery thought.

And, it’s why Host Analytics (and data infrastructure expert) Dave Kellogg advises HANA customers to switch to “standard infrastructure,” in part because it’s “more proven.”

Peaceful coexistence. for now

Like, for example, Apache Spark.

Of course, Spark-sponsor Databricks will be quick to say that SAP HANA and Spark are complementary, that the one is great for analyzing legacy enterprise data stuck in a CRM or ERP system while the latter handles. pretty much everything else.

This is true, but maybe not relevant. At least, not for long.

After all, as Kamlesh Barvalia, business intelligence and analytics Leader at GE, argued. there is “a great deal of overlap” between the two in terms of features and use cases, and many (like he) will “bet on Spark for the long haul.”

Why? Because Spark is open source (so “you do not run the risk of getting yourself trapped in proprietary development platforms” like HANA), cheaper, and “There is a great deal of momentum behind Spark and it appears that the feature overlap as well as breadth and depth of offering will only increase as the time goes by.”

Stated in pithier fashion, “What Dave Kellogg said.”

Spark isn’t the only open source challenge to HANA’s alleged momentum (barely ahead of Informix in terms of overall popularity ). Given the pace at which the open source community keeps leapfrogging itself with better and better data infrastructure, hatched and released by companies like Google, Facebook, and LinkedIn, who manage scale and speed that even SAP can hardly fathom, this is the open source community’s market to lose.

But it won’t, for all the reasons Mike Olson called out in his post. Ultimately, all data infrastructure will be open, or it will be irrelevant.

Ulteo Opensource Virtual Desktop

Ulteo is an open source program that does the same thing as Citrx. Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop v2.0 provides an open architecture to deliver securely any Linux and Windows applications to any device of the enterprise through the web browser, from anywhere. Integration in a Microsoft environment is fully supported. This is a pretty cool program and I use it to make a standard desktop interface that I can access from several different machines and have all of the data, and changes I have done on other computers. I have set this program up and I like it, I don t have the need to do large scale production environments with Ulteo. However it is cool to set up you virtual desktop and be able to log on to it to make changes to work or other projects and have the ability to access it in the same format from any computer on the internet. I am not sure of any kind of security problems that may exist but I would recommend checking it out.

Ulteo OVD allows Linux applications to be run on a Windows machine through a web browser along with Windows apps. The Linux applications are simply installed on the Linux server and you can publish it for use on the virtual desktop. The Windows applications require a Windows terminal server. I set it up and got everything working great, however you run into the licensing that is required for terminal connections so I didn t do any thing past the eval period. According to their web site future versions will not require a terminal server. You just install the Ulteo agent and register the Windows server with the session manager portion of the Ulteo software and publish the applications to the applications manager.

5 Open Source Big Data Analysis Platforms and Tools

It seems that Hadoop. by offering lower cost distributed computing, did as much to advance Big Data as any other software solution. So certainly any list of open source Big Data platforms will start with Hadoop. Yet as the rise of Spark shows, Hadoop may be a founding pioneer and may well retain its place as the foundation of Big Data but will not of course be its sole cornerstone. So think of this list (which does indeed start with Hadoop) as a glimpse of the pioneering days, the true infancy, of Big Data. The solutions on this list all look, to a greater or lesser extent, to Hadoop as a standard by which to compare their own performance. But the range of the list shows that this comparison is indeed just a springboard, and that many other open source Big Data solutions are sure to evolve in the years ahead.

Z-Wave is a low power mesh networking communications technology that allows Z-Wave enabled devices to communicate with each other and to distribute Z-Wave messages throughout to network. These sensors detect motion and sends Z-Wave signal when motion is detected within its detection range. This trigger signal can then be used to activate various other devices and perform preprogrammed tasks.

There are several Z-Wave compatible hubs that work with these sensors and don’t require any monthly fees, including the Samsung SmartThings Hub ($79) and Wink ($64.97).
