They work at hospitals, physicians’ offices, government organizations and nursing care facilities. They spend long periods sitting at desks, on computers.     Steps to Be a Coding Specialist

    What do I need to do to be a certified coding specialist?

    Step 1: Pursue a Postsecondary Education in Medical Billing and Coding

    Many coding positions seek individuals with an associate’s degree in medical billing and coding. Courses provide knowledge in medical terminology, reimbursement methods, pathophysiology and commonly used coding systems, including CPT and ICD-9. Students are also taught the details of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as well.

    Step 2: Gain Work Experience

    While work experience is not a requirement to become certified, obtaining 2-3 years of work experience is also highly recommended. Hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices and insurance companies are common work environments for medical coders. Individuals enrolled in a degree program also have the opportunity to enroll in an internship to gain hands-on training and some recommended work experience.

    Step 3: Pursue Certification

    The AHIMA oversees the certification exam for aspiring coding specialists. It offers several certification designations, including the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) and the Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P). The CCS is geared towards hospital-based coding professionals. Both tests consist of two parts, including multiple-choice questions and patient-case scenarios for medical coding. Both the CCS and the CCS-P exams test on ICD-9 and CPT coding systems. The CCS-P also includes testing on the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).

    Step 4: Take Continuing Education Courses and Renew Certification

    The BLS reported that health information technicians (which include certified coding technicians) need to regularly renew their certification and take continuing education classes. The AHIMA offers seminars, conferences and webinars that provide beneficial experiences for certified coding specialists and meet these requirements. CCSs and CCS-Ps must complete at least 30 continuing education units (CEUs) like these every certification cycle, as well as pay a renewal fee. CEUs are completed through college courses.

    Step 5: Consider Pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree

    Coding specialists looking to pursue promotional opportunities may need a bachelor’s degree in health administration or a related field, so coding specialists should keep that option open to them if they wish to advance.

    Certified coding specialists have associate’s degrees and certification. They use medical software programs while overseeing and updating patient records, and they earn a median annual salary of $37,110.

    Dr. Elisabeth Kubler Ross, author of the book “On Death and Dying,” also considered to be the founder of the death with dignity and hospice care movement said, “There is no joy without hardship. If not for death, would we appreciate life? Those who learn to know death, rather than to fear and fight it, become our teachers about life.” The entire philosophy behind end-of-life care, often called hospice or palliative care, is about love, kindness, and dignity—and learning to appreciate life. Helping to ease the pain and grief that comes with death is the role of those rare individuals that are willing to work with the dying; the palliative care specialist.

    Physician assistants are an integral part of a hospice team; if you are currently pursuing a degree in an online allied health program and are interested in one of the top paying health care careers, consider the available careers in hospice health care. It is a labor of love, and a field where a physician s assistant can really help patients and their families, and is a unique allied health specialty.

    What is Palliative (Hospice) Care?

    Palliative Care tackles both the physical and the psychological aspects of the end of life. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), palliative care is “an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual.” Those that work in hospices are palliative care specialists.

    The WHO goes on to list the following to describe hospice care:

    • Provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms
    • Affirms life and regards dying as a normal process
    • Intends neither to hasten or postpone death
    • Integrates the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care
    • Offers a support system to help patients live as actively as possible until death
    • Offers a support system to help the family cope during the patients illness and in their own bereavement
    • Uses a team approach to address the needs of patients and their families, including bereavement counseling, if indicated
    • Will enhance quality of life, and may also positively influence the course of illness
    • Is applicable early in the course of illness, in conjunction with other therapies that are intended to prolong life, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and includes those investigations needed to better understand and manage distressing clinical complications.

    What Comprise a Hospice Team?

    Working in hospices you will find physicians, nurses, home care aids, social workers, therapists and counselors, and the family of the dying individual. Hospice care is often provided both in the home and in a hospice center.

    Because of our aging population, hospice care is in high demand, and there is a critical shortage of those special people that can work in the hospice field. Home Care Aids are especially in high demand in the hospice field, and this allied health career offers stability and substantial personal and financial reward.

    How Do I Work in Hospice Care?

    Palliative care specialists are obviously physicians and nurses, but there are many careers in hospice health care available that also help provide this important care. Home Care Aids are a large part of a hospice care team, offering the kind of intimate care that is needed for the very sick.

    Most community, career, and vocational college offer Home Care Aid certification programs. In order to work in the Medicare system, specific guidelines must be met, and home care aids must pass a specific test. Most programs are between one and two years.

    A Special Gift: A Peaceful Passing

    Working in hospice care requires a special person. Because the focus is on comfort rather than cure, most patients in hospice care are in their last six months of life. Hospice care provides patients with pain and symptom relief as well as emotional support for the patients and their families.

    Master of Science in Clinical Child and School Psychology

    Why Study Clinical Child and School Psychology at SIUE?

    This program is highly unique as it is one of only a handful of combined clinical child and school psychology programs in the nation. It anticipated many developments in both school and clinical child psychology as it emphasizes prevention, the ecological/systems approach, and the consultative role of the psychologist. Further, the program focuses on evidence based practices, such as behavioral and cognitive interventions. Finally, practica experiences are seen as a critical and ongoing adjunct to the academic component of the program, with students engaging in practica every semester.

    The program includes two tracks: the Clinical Child track and School Psychology track. These tracks are designed to serve the needs of two groups of students. Students in the Clinical Child track will be prepared to work with children, adolescents, and their families in the health system and other community agencies, under the supervision of licensed healthcare providers. Clinical child psychology students are also well-prepared to pursue doctoral education at other universities following completion of their Master’s degrees. Some clinical child students are interested in becoming licensed; for that reason, we provide a web page about licensure .

    The School Psychology track prepares students with knowledge and skills necessary for further education and training in the specialist degree program in school psychology. Students pursuing certification in school psychology are admitted to the master’s degree program with the expectation that they will go on to complete the specialist degree program in school psychology. Students in the School Psychology Track who continue on for the specialist degree after completing the master’s degree are eligible for certification as school psychologists in Illinois.

    Curriculum across both tracks is equivalent during the first four semesters of training; practicum experiences are provided across various types of settings. Coursework and training experiences during the second year of the program, and particularly the latter part, are increasingly focused on either Clinical Child or School psychology.

    Unique Strengths of the SIUE Master s in Clinical Child and School Psychology

    The program has a number of unique strengths that allow it to stand out as a premier program in the nation, which include:

    • One of only a few combined programs in the nation
    • Practica begins immediately, during students first semester, and continues every following semester.
    • Ongoing partnerships with local school districts, Head Start. juvenile detention, and other local agencies
    • Breadth of training, including courses in prevention, psychotherapy, and crisis intervention
    • One of less than ten school psychology programs in the nation to include a course on autism assessment and intervention
    • Hosts two clinics unique to the St. Louis region, which are the Attention Behavior Clinic (ABC) and the Comprehensive Autism Spectrum Evaluation (CASE) site
    • Program was established in 1970 and the Specialist Program in School Psychology has been continuously fully accredited by NASP since 1999
    • Students work closely with faculty to develop their own thesis or research project
    • Students commonly present research at the annual conferences of the National Association of School Psychologists, Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, American Psychological Association, and other national organizations.
    • Students commonly coauthor research publications with program faculty.
    • Most importantly, you will learn from award-winning faculty!
    • Dr. Stephen Hupp received the SIUE Teaching Recognition Award in 2011.
    • Dr. Jeremy Jewell received the Mental Health Hero 2015 award from Wellspring Resources as well as the Vaughn Vandegrift Research Mentor award for the fall of 2012.
    • Dr. Elizabeth McKenney received the Extra Effort Award from Edwardsville School District 7 in 2014 and in 2013 received the Early Career Scholarship from the Trainers of School Psychologists.
    • In an analysis of publication productivity among school psychology faculty in all NASP-accredited, specialist-level programs (Laurent Runia, 2016 ), Drs. Jewell and Hupp were ranked the 24 th and 25 th most productive researchers in the U.S.A.
    • In the same analysis (Laurent Runia, 2016 ), SIUE’s school psychology graduate program was ranked seventh in the nation in scholarly productivity.

    Due to a national shortage of school psychologists, job prospects are outstanding for students who complete the school specialist degree. Prospects for students in the clinical child track are also very good. After the completion of their Master’s degree, clinical child track students find employment in a variety of clinical and community agencies under the supervision of a licensed professional. Students in the clinical child track are also highly successful at getting accepted into doctoral programs if they choose to apply.

    Specialist Certificate in Palliative Care

    The Centre for Palliative Care (CPC) has a state-wide role in palliative care education, with a focus on ensuring education is multidisciplinary and delivered by experts in their field who may be drawn from multiple institutions around Victoria as appropriate. The goals for CPC in regard to palliative care education are to:

    • Increase general understanding and skill in palliative care through education and training of the general health workforce
    • Develop future leaders in palliative care through programs designed to increase the number of palliative care specialists, and through facilitating opportunities for networking, peer support and leadership development.

    As part of its strategy to offer education in palliative care, CPC recognised the need to develop a university accredited postgraduate training program in palliative care, which would be the industry standard for working in specialist palliative care and open to all disciplines as well as interstate participants. CPC partnered with Melbourne Consulting and Custom Programs at University of Melbourne to develop and deliver ‘The Specialist Certificate in Palliative Care’.

    The ‘Specialist Certificate in Palliative Care’ is a formal award of the University of Melbourne comprising 25 points of training at Masters level, delivered as two standard 12.5 point subjects requiring 4-5 days of face to face teaching each.

    The course aims to be the industry standard for working in specialist palliative care and is delivered by experts in their fields, drawn from multiple institutions around Victoria. The course explores the core concepts related to palliative care, including symptom management, communication skills, and evidence based practice, non-malignant palliative illnesses, psychosocial issues and the role of the family caregiver.

    ‘Fundamentals of Palliative Care’ is the core subject for the Specialist Certificate in Palliative Care and then students can choose either ‘Adult Palliative Care’ or ‘Paediatric Palliative Care’ to complete the award course. The Specialist Certificate in Palliative Care is a stand-alone award in its own right that can be used for credit into more substantial postgraduate courses (such as Masters Courses).

    Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology Program is designed to be completed over a two-year period with day, evening, and Saturday courses as well as on- and off-campus clinical hours. Each program also includes summer session courses and clinical lab hours.

    Acceptance into Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology Program is based on a selective admissions process with a maximum of 15 students selected annually.

    Degree information

    Through a balance of classroom instruction and clinical experience, the student will acquire applied skills and knowledge in the field of Surgical Technology.

    Surgical technologists work in the operating room under the direct supervision of a surgeon and a registered nurse. Surgical technologists help facilitate the draping, and prepping of the surgical patient. They gown, and glove other team members. They get all the instruments, supplies, equipment necessary for specific surgical procedures. As a member of the sterile team, surgical technologists will hand all necessary instruments and supplies to the surgeon and other team members.

    A surgical technologist has a broad knowledge of anatomy and physiology, microbiology, sterile techniques, and patient safety concepts as well as ethical and legal concepts. A surgical technologist must have an understanding of the hospital organization, policies, and procedures.

    Job opportunities and salaries in the healthcare specialty of surgical technology have been rising steadily over the last few years, and the U.S. Department of Labor predicts employment of surgical technologists is projected to grow 30% from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Advances in medical technology have made surgery safer, and more operations are being done to treat a variety of illnesses and injuries. The median annual wage for surgical technologists was $41,790 in May 2012.

    Most surgical technologists are employed by hospitals, day-surgery centers with the remainder working in the offices of physicians. After two years of experience, a certified surgical technologist may apply to become a traveling surgical technologist.

    Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology program combines classroom instruction with practical clinical externships at local hospitals. Both career-specific and academic core courses are included. Students successfully completing the program are eligible to sit for the National Certifying Exam (CST).

    Surgical Technology Program classes are given days, nights and on weekends (based on the availability of the instructors). Clinical externships, however, must take place during the daytime.

    • To facilitate the hands-on, supervised experience in the operating room performing the duties of a surgical technologist.

    Admissions criteria and requirements

    Prospective students must meet the college’s minimum requirements. Applicants must submit proof of high school or GED completion with official high school transcript or GED equivalent. Lackawanna College will determine the applicant’s current academic ability based on a combination of following:

    • SAT or ACT test scores, if applicable
      • Recommended SAT scores: 470 Verbal and 470 Math.
      • Recommended ACT scores: 20 or higher in each relevant section.
      • Most scores are valid up to 3 years from test date.
    • College Transfer Credits
      • If transferring credits from another college/university, official college transcripts are required.
    • Placement Test
      • Applicants without valid SAT/ACT scores and who have not previously earned college credits will be required to take the ACCUPLACER exam for determination of current academic ability. Applicants must achieve College Ready scores in Reading, Writing, and Math to be considered qualified for the Surgical Technology program.

    Due to the very specific nature of these degree programs, applicants with transfer credits may only transfer credits related to program core courses including the following:

    Interviews will be scheduled for qualified Surgical Technology program applicants who submit a fully completed application. A mandatory informational meeting will be required prior to start of the selected program.Qualified students will be notified of the date and time upon selection into program. The meeting will review the Surgical Technology department’s policies and expectations. The meeting will also allow for question and answer session and tour of the Lackawanna College facilities.

    Curriculum

    Changes in the curriculum for this program have been approved by ARC/STSA and will be in effect for students beginning their studies in the Fall 2017 cohort.

    GastricSleeve (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy)

    The gastric sleeve is the lastest weight loss procedure that shows promising results. By restricting food absorbtion and reducing hunger the gastric sleeve might be your best option. Advantages of gastric sleeve include lower cost, less dumping, fewer complications and does not require adjustments after the initial surgery.

    The vertical sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive form of weight loss surgery in which approximately 85% of the stomach is removed leaving a cylindrical or sleeve shaped stomach with a capacity ranging from about 60 to 150 cc, depending upon the surgeon performing the procedure. Unlike many other forms of bariatric surgery, the outlet valve and the nerves to the stomach remain intact and, while the stomach is drastically reduced in size, its function is preserved. Again, unlike other forms of surgery such as the Roux en Y gastric bypass, the sleeve gastrectomy is not reversible.

    Because the new stomach continues to function normally there are far fewer restrictions on the foods which patients can consume after surgery, albeit that the quantity of food eaten will be considerably reduced. This is seen by many patients as being one of the great advantages of the sleeve gastrectomy, as is the fact that the removal of the majority of the stomach also results in the virtual elimination of hormones produced within the stomach which stimulate hunger.

    Perhaps the greatest advantage of the gastric sleeve lies in the fact that it does not involve any bypass of the intestinal tract and patients do not therefore suffer the complications of intestinal bypass such as intestinal obstruction, anemia, osteoporosis, vitamin deficiency and protein deficiency. It also makes it a suitable form of surgery for patients who are already suffering from anemia, Crohn’s disease and a variety of other conditions that would place them at high risk for surgery involving intestinal bypass.

    Facts about the gastric sleeve or sleeve gastrectomy:

    Alternative names: vertical sleeve gastrectomy, sleeve gastrectomy, greater curvature gastrectomy, parietal gastrectomy, gastric reduction and vertical gastroplasty.

    Surgery for high BMI patients. For patients with a particularly high body mass index (typically 50+) many forms of weight loss surgery are either difficult to perform or present increased risk. As a result, a vertical sleeve gastrectomy (or increasingly a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy) is sometimes performed as the first of a two-part weight loss solution to provide an initial drop in weight which then makes other bariatric follow up possible at a reduced level of risk.

    Surgery for low BMI patients. For obese patients with a relatively low body mass index the vertical sleeve gastrectomy can also prove a good choice, especially where existing conditions (such as anemia or Crohn’s disease) prevent them from having other forms of bariatric surgery. In addition, patients may choose this form of surgery if they are concerned about the long-term affects of bypass surgery or object to having a ‘foreign’ body implanted into their body, as is the case with lap band surgery.

    Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery

    During sleeve gastrectomy, the surgeon will remove the larger, rounded part of the stomach.

    • The remaining stomach looks like a sleeve (or hose or tube) and holds about 15 percent as much food as the original stomach.
    • The surgeon will remove the larger, rounded part of the stomach from the body. (This is the only gastric surgery in which part of the stomach is taken out of the body.)
    • Unlike gastric bypass, which changes stomach openings, sleeve gastrectomy leaves the openings intact.
    • It may be a safer and more effective option than gastric bypass for patients with very high BMI, those with medical problems like anemia, Crohn�s disease, osteoporosis, extensive prior surgeries and other complex medical conditions.
    • Sleeve gastrectomy may be safer than gastric bypass for patients who have a number of health risks.
    • It lowers the risk of ulcers compared to gastric bypass.
    • The surgery cuts away the part of the stomach that produces grehlin, a stomach hormone that stimulates hunger.
    • Though the stomach is smaller, the openings are left intact, so digestion can go on as normal.
    • The body is free of foreign objects like the LAP-BAND� or Realize Band.
    • May be converted to gastric bypass or duodenal switch if necessary for additional weight loss
    • Expected excess weight loss for stand-alone procedure is 60 to 70% at two years
    • Sleeve gastrectomy is more common in Europe, but most American health insurance carriers still consider it an investigational procedure and do not cover the cost. But that is rapidly changing so please consult our office to see if your insurance will cover the gastric sleeve.
    • Anytime you have anesthesia or surgery, there is a risk of blood clots, other complications or death.
    • Do not smoke. Smoking would put you at high risk for infection, blood clots, slow healing and other life-threatening complications.
    • Complications can occur with the stapling, such as leaks or bleeding.
    • You may need malabsorptive surgery � intestinal bypass or duodenal switch � in addition to your sleeve gastrectomy in order to lose all the weight you need and want to lose.
    • The smaller portion of the stomach may stretch.
    • Foods that you eat now may cause discomfort, nausea or vomiting after your surgery.
    • Gastric surgery puts you at higher than normal risk of developing gallstones and gallbladder disease.
    • You will not lose weight or maintain your weight loss unless you eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. This is the reason we stress long-term follow-up with our center and your doctor.

    We carried out this inspection under Section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. This inspection was planned to check whether the provider was meeting the legal requirements and regulations associated with the Health and Social Care Act 2008, to look at the overall quality of the service, and to provide a rating for the service under the Care Act 2014.

    The inspection took place on 29 March 2016 and was unannounced. The inspection team consisted of two inspectors, one of whom was a pharmacy specialist, a specialist advisor with experience of palliative and end of life care and an expert by experience. An expert by experience is someone who has personal experience of using or caring for someone has used this type of care service.

    Before we visited St Barnabas Hospice – Specialist Palliative Care Unit we reviewed the information we held about the service, such as the statement of purpose for the service and notifications we had received from the provider. A notification is information about important events which the service is required to send us. We also asked the provider to complete a Provider Information Return (PIR) before the inspection. This is a form that asks the provider to give some key information about the service, what the service does well and improvements they plan to make. We used this information to inform our planning.

    During the inspection we spent time observing how staff provided care for people so that we gained a better understanding of their how they experienced care. We spoke with seven people who used hospice services and four family members. We also looked at five people’s care records which included medication administration charts.

    We spoke with the Chief Executive Officer for the provider organisation, the registered manager, a team manager and a team co-ordinator, seven nursing staff, a cook, a housekeeper and two volunteers. We also spoke with external healthcare professionals who had regular contact with the service.

    We looked at a range of records including six staff personnel files, quality assurance documents, staff training records and reports of surveys carried out with people who used services and others who were important to them.

    Midhurst Macmillan Community Specialist Palliative Care Service

    This case study looks at the Midhurst Macmillan Service – a community-based, consultant-led, specialist palliative care service in a rural community in the south of England. The service covers approximately 150,000 people across three counties – Surrey, Hampshire and West Sussex. It is jointly funded by the NHS and Macmillan Cancer Support up to a total value of £1.2 million per year.

    This case study is part of a research project undertaken by The King’s Fund and funded by Aetna and the Aetna Foundation in the United States to compare five successful UK-based models of care co-ordination.

    What does the service aim to do?

    The service seeks to provide direct care and support to patients in the last 12 months of life to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions and enable them to live at home and die in the place of their choice.

    How is the service structured?

    The service is provided by a multidisciplinary team consisting of palliative care consultants, specialist nurses, health care support workers, allied health professionals and volunteers. Patients are allocated to one of six clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) ensuring continuity of care. A seventh CNS covers for others on leave or sick leave. Volunteers provide additional support through activities such as shopping or gardening. Information about patients is shared at multidisciplinary meetings held daily and weekly and logged on the internal IT system. Team members also use telephone and face-to-face communication to update each other about a patient’s status, and to liaise with GPs and community health teams.

    What is distinctive compared to the standard practice of care?

    The majority of patients at the end of their life tend to be treated in hospital or a hospice. Providing specialist palliative care in the community is unusual as it requires a significant level of co-ordination between professionals to ensure that all symptoms are managed effectively and that care packages are readjusted as a patient’s condition progresses. The Midhurst Macmillan Service has access to palliative care consultants based in the community who are able to provide specialist interventions that are normally delivered in hospital at the patient’s home.

    What are the key lessons?

    • Awareness-raising and relationship-building
      The Midhurst Macmillan Service has been successful in engaging with most GPs in its catchment area, ensuring that care co-ordination and planning involves the patient’s primary care physician. The service has also built relationships with a wide range of other stakeholders, including community staff, hospital consultants, volunteers and local people strengthening its ability to ‘capture’ people nearing the end of life before, or very soon after, a hospital admission.
    • Holistic care assessment and personalised care plan
      A single assessment process examines both the health and social care needs of the patient and their family. It also takes into account their personal choices about future care and treatment options.
    • Multiple referrals to a single-entry point
      The service accepts referrals from any health professional and actively engages local GPs to raise awareness of the service. All referrals come into the service and are assigned to a clinical nurse specialist from a single-entry point.
    • Dedicated care co-ordination
      The care co-ordinator has a number of roles: acting as the principal point of contact with the patient and their family; effectively co-ordinating care from within a multidisciplinary team and liaising with the wider network of care providers.
    • Rapid access to care from a multidisciplinary team
      Both professionals and volunteers can be rapidly deployed by the service to provide care or support to meet the needs of people living at home. The service operates 12 hours a day, with access to an on-call clinician out of hours.
