    Would have given it a poor rating but the lovely staff bumped it up to average. I don’t know who manages the restaurant and bar staff but they need to pull their finger out and get a better system in place to serve their guests. We spent the whole weekend waiting for food and drink when our order was finally taken. Several times someone would take out order and then disappear and we would either have to ask another member of staff to get our order or they would notice we were still sat at an empty table. We had to queue for breakfast both mornings, ‘speciality’ coffee’s weren’t included with breakfast which is ridiculous for a 5 star, the one night we had dinner our starters arrived before our wine and water had been bought to our table, there were not near enough sun loungers in the spa so you couldn’t really spend a day chilling in the spa. Our room was very basic and dated with no mini-bar or coffee machine and the bed we had to push back together as it was two singles linked together and we could hear the whirring of the lift from early morning to late at night. Saving grace was our treatments we’d booked in the spa, the team handled their clients really well and it looked like a smooth running operation, Stacey in the spa was lovely! We had a gentleman’s afternoon tea which was lovely but again waited 30 mins for it to arrive. Breakfast was average but the quality of the food for dinner in the restaurant on Saturday evening was fantastic. I really wouldn’t say this was a 5 star hotel or experience which was a shame, and we probably wouldn’t go back there again.

    Spent 2 nights with 14 friends at this hotel and frankly left with mixed feelings

    It’s very modern with a huge and quite impressive atrium in reception and the rooms were very comfortable with all the necessary appliances, trouser press, hairdryer for the ladies and tea making facilities. Our room was good with a balcony and a friends room we visited for drinks was a corner room with superb views over the bay.

    Now my complaints. We ate in the hotel dining room which was smart and with good service. We were nearly all golfers with big appetites, so when the small portion nouvelle cuisine main course arrived we were all singularly unimpressed. Well presented yes but come on nouvelle cuisine went out years ago. The chef saw himself as an artist rather than a food provider. Expensive too or maybe it was the many bottles of wine we disposed of.

    In our friends room which was excellent the large windows were dirty and covered on the outside thank heavens, with cobwebs and huge spiders. Does the outside ever get cleaned and deinfested. Arachnaphobics would run out screaming. The outside itself needed painting and rusty area of railings etc cleaned up

    Small matter but we needed more tea bags and milk in our room and it took 2 calls to reception and a 45 minute wait for them to arrive.

    Did’nt use the spa and treatment room but it seemed to tick all the boxes as far as I could tell

    Would I go back there, perhaps, after a good clean, the hotel that is!!

    Cardiff Central station is ¼ mile and a short taxi ride away and Birmingham, Manchester or London Paddington are just two hours by rail. Turn right out of the station car park and carry on straight ahead through the traffic lights onto Dumballs Road. Continue until the junction and turn left at the junction then turn first right on to Adelaide Street, passing the School on your right. At the end of Adelaide Street turn right on to Stuart Street passing Techniquest on your left. Take the first turn left onto Havannah Street and continue to The St David s Hotel Spa. We will happily arrange a taxi for you, on request at the time of booking. The hotel is also a short walk from the main Cardiff Bay area where you can catch the Baycar Bus number 6. This service operates continually during the day and leaves every 10 minutes, travelling directly up to the city centre.

    The St David s Hotel Spa

    Location

    In the regenerated Cardiff Bay area, St David’s Hotel Spa is a 10-minute taxi ride from Cardiff Central station, and a 20-minute walk from the city centre. It is next to the shops, bars and attractions of the Cardiff Bay area, including the Doctor Who Experience and the Welsh Assembly building. However, the great views across Cardiff Bay from balconies (not a feature of all rooms) are rather spoiled by traffic noise from the nearby A4232.

    Style character

    An enormous white and glass building, St David’s has an impressive uninterrupted ground floor to roof atrium. Although the view from each floor’s corridor is not, therefore, for those with vertigo, this design allows for a pleasant feel of light and space. On the other hand, the large panes of glass and clean white walls occasionally mean that the design slips into “office” territory. Indeed, the property has to tread a fine line between business and leisure hotel, accommodating both types of customer, as well as many wedding parties. Although it mostly succeeds, the very prominent “business suite” made things feel slightly corporate. The Marine spa has excellent facilities in the shape of a swimming pool, sauna, hydrotherapy spa pool, gym, and ESPA treatments. The waiting area has a good range of teas, coffees and juices, magazines, and a collection of books including Charles Dickens and Rudyard Kipling. The floor to ceiling windows allow for lovely views over the bay, complete, perhaps, with bobbing swans. A nice touch is the private lift for spa access, so guests can get ready in their rooms and then go straight to the spa without traipsing through the main hotel reception.

    Service facilities

    Staff were friendly and efficient – perhaps overly so at breakfast, when plates were whipped away before I had finished my last bite of food. This may make guests feel as if staff members want to “clean up around them”. But they were also knowledgeable: I took a recommendation about boarding a water taxi from the Bay to the city centre and found it a pleasant way to get to Cardiff’s main park and castle. Staff in the hotel spa were obviously well-trained, and the therapist who gave me a back massage was attentive to the pressure she applied.

    Rooms

    My deluxe twin room was well equipped, with all the accoutrements of a business hotel, including shoe horns, Molton Brown toiletries and a flat screen television. However, the room lacked the character one might expect from a property that also markets itself to leisure travellers, who could want more than service- lead accommodation. The bland pale wood fittings and generic leather chair meant the room did not have “stay factor”, and the scuffed furniture felt less than five-star. There was also audible noise from other rooms during the night. My room did not have a mini bar, although 24-hour room service is available.

    Royal visit at new in patient centre at St Luke s Hospice in Sheffield

    A new inpatient unit at St Luke s Hospice – paid for in part thanks to The Star – has been given the Royal seal of approval.

    Prince Richard, The Duke of Gloucester, toured the new extended and refurbished £5.5 million In Patient Centre at the hospice in Whirlow.

    The Duke Gloucester has visited St Luke’s Hospice in Little Common Lane, Sheffield, to open the new In Patient Centre. Our picture shows the Duke signing the visitors book, watched by chief executive Peter Hartland.

    The Star has so far raised more than half of the £100,000 it pledged for one of the single rooms in the new unit, with £50,000 alone coming from our Great Pie and Peas Up campaign.

    Hundreds of pie and pea suppers were hosted by readers, residents, businesses, schools and community groups, with proceeds going towards St Luke’s fundraising target.

    The Queen’s cousin looked around the hospice before meeting patients and staff, unveiling a commemorative plaque, and signing the guest book.

    He praised fundraisers and staff for their hard work, and the architects for their design.

    The new unit, which aims to allow patients to carry on as normal a life as possible, accommodates 20 patients in 14 single rooms and two three-bedded rooms.

    The Duke said: “I congratulate those who have played a part in developing St Luke’s over the decade and, in particular, this new wing which you have clearly designed with great care and attention and which is already full of your patients who feel extremely comfortable and well looked after.”

    Following the Duke’s visit, BBC television presenter Harry Gration took part in a dedication ceremony with patients.

    Gaynor Boon, aged 52, from Woodhouse, has ovarian cancer and has been staying in the unit for a week while her pain relief is managed.

    The former curator at Sheffield Museums said: “This is my first visit. It’s amazing really. Coming in you feel like you are walking into a hotel environment and are treated like a hotel guest.

    “You have got state-of-the-art nursing and pain management, but on top of that there is the hospitality side.

    “You’ve got a lovely room with a balcony, a menu which offers three-course lunches and dinners, and a restaurant service.

    “My dog Hunney, a long haired golden retriever, is also allowed to visit! She comes most days which makes it feel like a home from home.”

    Una Moran, director of fundraising at St Luke’s Hospice, described the unit as ‘a gift by the people of Sheffield, for the people of Sheffield’.

    She said: “Everyone who has contributed should be proud of the part they have played in creating this gift for the people of Sheffield, which will be here for many years to come.”

    She added: “It never ceases to amaze me the ways people think of to raise money, and the generosity people find to stretch themselves to support this hospice, which supports about 6,000 people across Sheffield every single year, including patients and loved ones.”

    Palliative Care Unit

    The focus of the palliative care unit (PCU) is to manage distressing symptoms (pain, nausea, difficulty breathing) and ensure comfort when cure is no longer possible.

    The PCU is a 10-bed unit comprised of three large semi-private rooms and four single rooms. The environment on PCU is structured for the comfort of patients and their families and friends. Facilities include an open concept kitchen/lounge/dining area, laundry facilities, a whirlpool bath, educational reading materials and small private meeting rooms.

    • Visiting hours are flexible.
    • Family and friends wishing to stay overnight with a patient may arrange a cot and sleeper chair with our staff.
    • Children are welcome to visit.
    • Pets are welcome to visit, with clearance from staff.
    • Open dialogue with our specially trained staff is encouraged at all times.
    • Trained volunteers are part of the team, and help to enrich the patient s quality of life.
    • All religions are respected, all personal spiritual advisors are encouraged to visit and a multi-faith meditation room and chapel are located in the Hospital.
    • All basic ward rooms and professional care are covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP).

    Accessing Palliative Care

    Applications to the palliative care unit are normally made by a member of the health care team caring for the patient.

    Our criteria for admission:

    • The patient and family agree with a palliative plan of care. This means that a decision has been made by the patient and family to stop any further active treatment aimed at cure of the illness, and to focus instead on promoting patient comfort by managing symptoms.
    • A do not resuscitate (DNR) status has been discussed and agreed upon by the patient and the patient s family.
    • The patient should have an estimated life expectancy of three months or less. If the condition of the patient stabilizes or improves and the care team feels the patient may have a longer life expectancy than initially thought, we work with the patient and the patient s family to find a more appropriate care setting.

    Tours of the unit are encouraged so patients and families can see the facility and have an opportunity to talk with our staff to answer any questions about palliative care.

    Pikes Peak Hospice Palliative Care

    This isn t the easiest place to write a review of because I just lost my dad there a couple days ago. But for anyone else that might have to go through something that hard, this place is amazing.

    It s located on the 4th floor of the Medical Center and has an incredible staff, many of whom are volunteers with personal experiences there. The social worker and chaplain that came to speak with my mom were absolutely incredible and made things so much easier for her. They even help to set up things for after someone passes, which I know I appreciated because I had no idea what to do.

    My sister and I spent a lot of time walking around the floor and there are beautiful pieces of art everywhere along with two sitting areas, each with a piano and small aviary (with finches and doves in it). It was just before Christmas so they also had trees and decorations up.

    There is a cafeteria on the 5th floor (check the hours because it s not open all the time) that gives a discount to family members of someone in the hospice. And they have a pretty good selection of food too.

    I had to telecommute while I was there, and the hospice offers a wifi just for family members to use. You just have to ask the front desk for the password.

    These are a great bunch of people that made the hardest day of my life much easier to deal with. In the end when you re loved one passes, they even place a rose on the door. It s a small thing, but means a lot at the time.

    Situations like this always leave me wishing there was a ZERO star rating. I had a terrible experience with Pikes Peak Hospice. There are some great nurses there, Tangee is really, really compassionate and knowledgeable. Several other day shift folks are great. BUT, if you stay the night with your loved one you will see a night shift that could care less if you end up being the one to care for your loved one. They certainly won t move at anything more than a snails pace to respond to a call light. They were deplorable.

    However, it s the saleswoman Mimi that was really despicable. She put on a high pressure sales pitch that used car salesmen would be in awe of. She mentioned on numerous occasions that right now we have a bed open , making it sound like at any moment they might fill up and a bed would not be available any longer. She also refused to let us call and talk to the charge nurse and ask some detailed questions to someone who actually knew what kind of care was provided. Once we got in, there were probably 12 beds available, so it was abundantly clear that she was preying on us in order to close a deal. Here we are, with our father in the hospital on his way to dying and all Mimi cares about is selling us a bed. Enjoy that commission Mimi, I hope it buys you a lot of fans as you rot in hell.

    What Is St. John s Hospice?

    Saint John’s Hospice is a Catholic Social Services shelter for men located in Center City Philadelphia. Established in 1963 by Monsignor Anthony J. O’Neill, Pastor of Saint John the Evangelist Church, and The Little Brothers of The Good Shepherd, Saint Johns was created as an outreach ministry to serve and assist the poor and homeless in the community.     The Hospice House of St. Mary’s opened in fall 2009 and serves as a place of dignity, comfort and peace. At times, individuals with terminal illnesses need care that cannot be provided in their own homes. For these individuals, Hospice House offers care and a place to call home. Hospice House of St. Mary’s is the first of its kind in our county, thanks to the many community members and organizations that helped turn the vision of the house into a reality. This attractive residence, located on 23 acres of wooded land in Callaway, Maryland, offers a country kitchen, great room, dining room for special family gatherings and a meditation room. Spacious private bedrooms include a large bathroom, fully electric patient beds, a double sleeper sofa and comfortable seating, as well as French doors to private patios and/or a huge deck overlooking beautifully landscaped grounds.

    When might care at the Hospice House be appropriate?

    Many situations may occur in which Hospice House care would be appropriate, but the most likely scenarios may be if the patient lives alone, has a caregiver who is unable to continue care for his or her loved one at home, or if there are intense pain and/or symptom management needs.

    What amenities does the Hospice House offer?

    Residents and their loved ones will relax in one of our six peaceful bedroom suites complete with private bathrooms and common areas. Other amenities include a spacious community living room, an open deck with a breathtaking view of our rural 23-acre property and a beautifully landscaped memorial garden. Patient meals are prepared daily by staff or Hospice volunteers in a country-style kitchen. Meal planning is overseen by a registered dietitian.

    What costs are involved?

    Hospice of St. Mary’s does not turn anyone away for the inability to pay. Though hospice care is covered by most insurance policies, it does not cover the cost of room and board charges at the Hospice House. Room and board at Hospice House is assessed at a flat daily rate with a sliding scale fee available to residents of St. Mary’s county, based on the patient’s ability to pay. The sliding scale is determined by an analysis of the patient’s income vs. expenses (not taking into consideration personal property such as land or home). Our social workers will review this with the family by looking at tax returns, bank statements, sources of income, and the patient’s monthly expenses (mortgage, utility bills, credit card bills, grocery costs, etc.) to see if the patient would qualify for a reduced rate. Payments would be made by the patient directly or by a family member on the patient’s behalf. When needed, our social workers can help families in preparing documents to give financial access to the patient’s designee.

    How can you help?

    Volunteers are always needed to prepare meals, maintain cleanliness, complete errands and maintain the yard. Volunteers can be of any age, but must provide their own transportation. Learn more about volunteering at Hospice of St. Mary’s.

    Munsinger Gardens

    From Sawmill to Flower Garden

    The history of St. Cloud’s Munsinger Gardens may be compared to the garden’s well-worn paths; for both have interesting and unexpected turns. During the 1880s the lower east bank of the Mississippi River was the site of a sawmill. But by 1915 the city purchased the area for use as a neighborhood park. Eventually, the site became known as Riverside Park and Munsinger Gardens, the latter section named in honor of a former superintendent of parks, Joseph Munsinger. Munsinger Gardens has experienced many different stages of development. Improvements to the gardens occurred during the Great Depression through the Works Progress Administration. Projects from this period included planting trees and flowerbeds. Other additions included the creation of rock-lined paths, a lily pond, and a fountain. However, most of the work in developing the garden was directed by Joseph Munsinger. The first greenhouse was built in 1938. While the original greenhouse is gone, new ones stand in its place, and garden staff continues the tradition of growing flowers that help beautify this wonderful jewel known as Munsinger Gardens.

    Great little motel. We stayed here for one night. The rooms are small but clean and exactly what you would expect for a little beach motel. We paid 175 for the night which is pricey for a motel however it s just a short walk to the beach, a trolley stop, and multiple restaurants. We didn t have to drive at all for the two days we were there. The woman at the front desk was very friendly and polite. The outdoor pool was very clean. They even have a grill and patio section set up. We didn t get to use this but will when we go back to stay again.

    My girlfriend and I stayed at the Footbridge Motel for three nights, and we were thoroughly pleased with the room, amenities, and the friendly staff that the motel provided. Upon arrival the woman that checked us into our room offered to upgrade us to a larger room with a larger bed free of charge. The motel rooms are newly remodeled, clean, and comfortable. The heated pool, and barbecues are great amenities that add to the value of your stay. You really get more for your money when booking your stay at the Footbridge!

    I was happy with our stay here. The lady at the desk was friendly and offered us brochures of places to eat and things to do, and told us if we needed anything she would be there for us!

    The room was great for the price, and close to the Footbridge Beach which was beautiful and relaxing with its white sand beaches.

    Pros: close to everything in town and a great beach, nice staff, big comfy bed, great water pressure on the shower head!

    Cons: the shower water went from freezing cold to scalding hot throughout my showers. I had to do a shower dance! The biggest downer was that I pre-paid for my room on a website and when we arrived, they had their off-season rates (probably because it was raining). I could have saved about $100 if I hadn t bought them online!

    Insurers Sending Consent to Rate Letters to North Carolina Homeowners

    North Carolina homeowners are being told to pay higher insurance premiums or risk losing their coverage under a law that allows companies to pay more than the state has approved.

    The StarNews of Wilmington reported insurance companies are sending consent to rate letters under which homeowners agree to a higher rate or risk losing their coverage.

    Sen. Michael Lee, R-New Hanover, a member of the Senate Insurance Committee said legislators need to look at the consent to rate law. It s a big concern for a lot of folks in our area, Lee said.

    The state insurance commissioner last month ruled against any increase in homeowners rates. The N.C. Rate Bureau, which represents insurers, sought an average 25.6 percent increase statewide and up to 35 percent in parts of the Wilmington area.

    Terry Wilkerson of Wilmington said his insurer, Travelers, gave him 10 days to decide whether to accept an increase of more than 120 percent. Travelers had provided his coverage for 15 years, he said.

    Our use of consent to rate is fully compliant with North Carolina law, Travelers said in a statement. There are instances when we charge more than the state s approved rate to reflect the risks customers are facing and to keep up with the increasing costs to repair, replace and rebuild property.

    A Travelers spokesman also said that the proposed increase for Wilkerson was not typical.

    Insurance companies are within their rights under North Carolina law, said Kerry Hall, spokeswoman for the state Department of Insurance. Insurance companies can increase premiums by up to 250 percent if the customer agrees, she said.

    Rep. Susi Hamilton, D-New Hanover, said she recommended that people who receive a consent to rate letter contact the Insurance Department and look into more customer-friendly insurers.
