    Basic Math Teaching Strategies

    The building blocks of mathematics start early on, when learning the basic skills. The key to teaching basic math skills that students can apply and remember for future instruction is to use several teaching strategies.

    Repetition

    A simple strategy teachers can use to improve math skills is repetition. By repeating and reviewing previous formulas, lessons and information, students are better able to comprehend concepts at a faster rate.

    According to Professor W. Stephen Wilson from Johns Hopkins University, the core concepts of basic math must be mastered before students are able to move into a more advanced study. Repetition is a simple tool that makes it easier for students to master the concepts without wasting time. According to the University of Minnesota, daily re-looping or reviews will bring the previous lesson back into the spotlight and allow teachers to build on those previous skills.

    Timed testing

    When teachers are moving beyond the simple concepts of numbers into addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, it is important to incorporate timed tests that review the previous class or several classes.

    Taking a short test and then grading the test in class will help teachers assess student understanding. When the test shows that students are answering more questions correctly within the time period, teachers are able to determine that students have mastered the basic skills.

    Pair work

    Mathematics is not limited to learning from a textbook, lessons, or testing strategy. Students have different learning styles and need to have lessons that help improve all styles of learning to get the best results.

    Group work is a simple strategy that allows students to work and problem solve with a buddy. When a teacher has provided the basic instruction, it’s helpful to split the class into pairs or groups to work on problems.

    Since the pairs are working as a team, the students can discuss the problems and work together to solve the issues. The goal of pair work is to teach students critical thinking skills that are necessary for future math problems and real life.

    Manipulation tools

    The use of blocks, fruits, balls or other manipulation tools help students learn the basics of place value, addition, subtraction and other areas of basic math. According to Kate Nonesuch on the National Adult Learning Database of Canada, manipulation tools help slow down the process of problem solving so that students are able to fully understand the information.

    Manipulation tools make it easier for students to learn and understand basic skills. These are ideal when students learn best through hands-on experience and building rather than traditional lessons and repetition.

    Math games

    Reinforcing the information learned in class is not always the easiest task for teachers, but math games provide the opportunity to make the lesson interesting and encourage students to remember the concepts.

    Depending on the class size, computer availability, and the lesson being taught, games can vary. Teachers can use computer games for the particular skills or can opt to use class games to make the lesson more fun. Teachers should be sure to incorporate a strategy into games to help students learn the material.

    Math skills are an important part of life. To offer students the most help, teachers need to incorporate several strategies to give students the opportunity for future growth.

    Online ENDORSEMENT Programs

    The Patton College at Ohio University offers online endorsement programs for teachers who hold a standard Ohio teaching certificate or license. Certified or licensed Ohio teachers seeking an endorsement must complete the required courses and the appropriate assessments in order to be recommended for licensure in one of the following areas:

    4th 5th Grade Early Childhood Endorsement

    The Early Childhood Generalist Endorsement, offered entirely online, expands opportunities for teachers who currently hold the Early Childhood License (age 3 to grade 3). Currently licensed teachers are eligible for this program. More information HERE .

    Pre-Kindergarten Special NeeDS endorsement

    The purpose of the PKSN Endorsement program is to increase the quantity of high-quality PKSN teachers across the state of Ohio. This program will help to ensure that there are a sufficient number of fully-credentialed and well-prepared teachers to instruct preschool children with disabilities and developmental delays so that the quality of instructional services received by children and their families is resolute. Early childhood teachers and intervention specialists will benefit from the PKSN program by acquiring advanced knowledge and skills to enhance the early educational opportunities for preschool children with special needs.     Reading Endorsement

    The Reading Endorsement, offered entirely online, prepares teachers who are currently licensed to teach early childhood education, middle childhood education, or adolescent/young adult education (grades pre-K through 12) to work with students pre-K-12 in any or all of three reading specialist professions: Reading intervention teacher; Reading or literacy coach; and/or Reading supervisor or coordinator.     TEACHER LEADER PROGRAM

    The online Teacher Leader Endorsement will prepare experienced teachers to assume leadership roles within their schools and throughout their districts. Participants will gain knowledge and skills to provide quality professional development for their colleagues, coach and mentor other teachers, facilitate positive school/community relations, organize and analyze data, and assist their principals with school improvement efforts.     In order to better serve our students, a new policy will take effect beginning with the Fall 2017 Semester. Candidates seeking licensure within eighteen (18) months of successfully completing an educator preparation program at Ohio University will be recommended for licensure if they apply within that timeframe to the Ohio Department of Education. If application for licensure is made after eighteen (18) months to the Ohio Department of Education, candidates will be required to meet with their program coordinator for consultation regarding any additional state and/or program requirements they need to complete. Following this consultation and the satisfaction of any additionally identified requirements, recommendation by Ohio University will be granted on a case-by-case basis. This applies to all candidates including past graduates who have not earned the license for which they were prepared.

    Blended ProgramS

    Superintendent License Program

    Earn the Ohio Superintendent License in just four quarters of study in a program recognized by the Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC ). Classes meet three times each quarter on Saturday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. for this blended program. More information HERE .

    PRINCIPAL Preparation PROGRAM

    Through a balanced approach of on-line and in-class instruction, the program offers course work and internships required for obtaining a master’s degree in educational administration and/or an Ohio principal’s license. More information HERE.

    Professional Instructional Design Certificate

    The online Professional Instructional Design Certificate prepares participants to develop theory-driven instructional materials and strategies for traditional, hybrid and online adult learning environments.     Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction

    The Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction is designed for teachers who already hold a teaching license or certificate in any content area or at any level, PK-12. Coursework and clinical experiences in your own classroom focus on innovations in teaching, student learning, curriculum, development, pedagogy, assessment, leadership thru mentoring new teachers or pre-service teacher candidates, community involvement, and action research.     Ohio University has partnered with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) to develop and deliver a M.S. degree in Recreation and Sport Sciences with a concentration in Soccer Coaching.     Online PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR MENTOR TEACHERS

    Ohio University’s Patton College of Education is committed to the success of all learners in P-12 schools. In order to support P-12 teaching and learning, the college has established the following: an alignment between OTES standards and mentor teacher roles; a new compensation model for hosting professional interns; and online professional development opportunities.     Ohio requires that its teachers have at least a bachelor s degree in a teaching field or complete a teacher preparation program. Below are some of the top colleges and universities in Ohio for aspiring teachers as well as some of the programs available to students.

    Whether students are looking to add additional endorsements to their teaching licenses or are pursuing initial licensure as teacher, they re sure to find the appropriate program at one of the many Ohio teaching schools.

    Search for Online Teaching Programs Currently Accepting Applicants

    Bachelor s in Education Degrees in Ohio

    A large variety of undergraduate teaching programs are available at Ohio universities, including early childhood education, early childhood intervention specialist, middle grades education, special education intervention specialist, and adolescent-young adult secondary programs as well as multi-age programs. AU also offers 2+2 programs which allow students who have earned associate teaching degrees at approved community colleges to complete the last two years of a bachelor degree program at AU.

    A few schools have bachelor s in education programs in specialized areas, such as a special education degree that offers majors in early childhood intervention specialist, mild/moderate intervention specialist or moderate/intensive intervention specialist, or bachelor degree programs in English as a second language; early childhood education; foreign language; literacy education; middle school education; and adolescent-young adult.

    Master s in Education Degrees in Ohio

    Ashland University offers a Master of Education in Educational Administration program and a M.Ed. in Curriculum Instruction degree with concentrations in teaching and learning in the 21st Century; educational technology; literacy and reading instruction; intervention specialist: mild-moderate needs; and talent development education. Cleveland State University offers a master degree program in teaching English to speakers of other languages, as well as master degrees in the same majors that CSU offers at the baccalaureate level.

    Kent State University offers a wide variety of both bachelor and master degree programs. KSU s majors include adolescent and young adult; career technical teacher; curriculum instruction; early childhood; literacy education; middle childhood; physical education and an accelerated Master of Arts in Teaching program. OSU also has many master degree teaching programs.

    Online Teaching Degrees in Ohio

    Ashland University offers an online Master of Education in Curriculum Instruction with an emphasis in educational technology. Consisting of core curriculum and capstone experiences, this graduate program requires completing from 30 to 33 semester hours. AU also offers a 12-hour online Technology for the 21st Century certificate program for teachers who just want to brush up on their skills.

    Teaching English to speakers of other languages and technology director endorsements are also offered through AU s distance learning department. Cleveland State University and Kent State University bother offer several online teaching programs.

    Ohio Teacher Certification Specializations

    Ashland University has a Bachelor Plus Initial Teacher Licensure Program for individuals who have bachelor degrees and want to become teachers but don t want to earn another degree. This program offers students the choice of 15 different teaching license options. AU also offers an early childhood generalist endorsement that, when added to the early childhood education baccalaureate program, enables teachers to also teach grades 4 and 5.

    Central State University has certification/licensure programs in several areas, including adolescent to young adult (grades 7 to 12) in integrated language arts, mathematics, social studies, life science and physical science; early childhood education (Pre K-3); intervention specialist (Pre K-3); middle childhood; and multi-age health, music and physical education.

    Cleveland State University offers several licensure-only programs for students that have the degree but lack certification or want to earn additional endorsements. Kent State University also offers several licensure and non-licensure programs.

    Sur le thème de la fabrication additive (3D)

    Jeudi 29 juin a eu lieu la cinquième Soirée des partenaires de l’école, organisée par le service des Relations industrielles. L’événement a rassemblé environ quatre-vingt personnes, industriels, représentants du secteur économique régional, universitaires et étudiants.

    Une table-ronde, animée par Fabien SOULIÉ, enseignant-chercheur, a abordé le thème de « La fabrication additive dans les applications industrielles, citoyennes, de la recherche et de la formation ».

    Stéphane ABED, président de la société Poly shape, Yann LEFEBVRE, président du FabLab « LabSud », André CHRYSOCHOOS, directeur du centre PRO3D et Christian JORGENSEN, professeur au CHU de Montpellier et directeur de l’unité INSERM “Cellules souches, plasticité cellulaire, médecine régénératrice et immunothérapies”, sont intervenus pour partager leurs expériences et échanger sur les applications de ces technologies.

    Les diverses interventions des invités ont permis de montrer le spectre très large des champs d’applications de ces nouvelles techniques de mise en œuvre de la matière, allant de l’industrie de pointe à la recherche médicale avancée, sans oublier les applications standardsaccessibles à tous ” précise Fabien Soulié.

    Les présentations ont aussi su faire ressortir toutes les étapes de la démarche de conception, de dimensionnement et d’optimisation, préalables à la phase d’impressionproprement dite ” ajoute André Chrysochoos, concluant que “la fabrication additive est apparue aux participants comme une solution complémentaire aux techniques classiques de fabrication, mais possédant ses propres limites “.

    Admission Requirements

    Admission to the doctoral program occurs prior to initiation of course work. The number of students admitted will be limited to ensure quality of program and dissertation advising.

    Applicants who are successful in their application for admission for entrance into the doctoral program will meet the following criteria:

    • Master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA
    • A completed Doctoral Application for Admission
    • Submission of rationale statement, including personal goals for applying for admission to the program.
    • Transcripts: Submission of official transcripts of all previous credits.
    • Testing: Current Graduate Record Exam or Miller Analogies Test scores (test taken within the prior three years).
    • Letters of recommendation from two persons qualified to comment upon the applicant’s potential for doctoral study.
    • Past experience: At least two years of successful teaching/administrative experience (required only for doctoral programs in K-12 education).
    • Writing sample: Submit a paper that demonstrates your ability to write in a scholarly manner at a level typical of graduate work. A paper from your master’s program would be most appropriate. This sample should approach, but not exceed, five pages in length.

    Once the admission file is completed and initially reviewed, qualified applicants will complete an extemporaneous writing sample followed by a personal interview with an admission committee.

    Admission recommendations are submitted from the admission committee to the Dean of the College of Education, who will then make the final admission decision and communicate the decision to the candidate. The admission committee may establish an admission waiting list, if necessary. Students admitted should consult the Doctoral Program Handbook for additional program information.

    Students who are applying for admission to the doctoral program are precluded from enrolling in any courses which met doctoral program requirements until the student has been completely admitted to the program.

    The Graduate Admission Committee reserves the right to request additional information or documentation deemed helpful in evaluating applicants for admission.

    Additional Testing

    Depending on program of study, students may be required to take additional tests such as the Graduate Record Exam, Miller Analogies Test and/or the Illinois Basic Skills Test.     International Students

    Applicants who are not U.S. citizens are required to meet all admission standards listed for the program they wish to enter. In addition, the following are required to be considered for admission:

    • TOEFL: A score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 72 (internet) minimum requirement on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or successful completion of Level 112 at an English Language School (ELS) unless English is the native language, and an unqualified recommendation from an ELS program director is provided. (International students who have earned an advanced degree from an accredited institution in the United States do not need to submit TOEFL scores.)
    • Transcripts: Official transcripts from each college/university attended showing all college/university course work with certified English translations of all transcripts originally prepared in any other language. Also, any international transcripts must be evaluated by a Concordia-approved international credentialing service such as WES (World Education Services), ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators), or AACRAO (American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers).
    • Financial Support: A certified document guaranteeing adequate financial support for at least the student’s first year of study and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, adequate funding from the same or an equally dependable source, for subsequent years.
    • Medical: A physical exam, adequate medical insurance, and proof of immunization are required prior to enrollment.
    • Regular Admission Requirements: International students must qualify for regular admission to a degree program in order to enroll.

    In this field-based, practical programme you will develop the skills to become a competent, informed and reflective early childhood teacher who is committed to young children and their learning and development. We believe people learn through participation and we value the experience and insight you’ll gain from working in early childhood centres. There will be plenty of opportunities to relate these experiences to theory during campus sessions. When you graduate, you will be eligible to become a registered teacher in licensed early childhood education centres.

    • Teacher registration: once you’ve completed this degree, you can apply for teacher registration with the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ Teachers Council)
    • We aim for informed and reflective teaching based on observation and understanding of how people learn
    • A thorough grounding in educational theory and relevant practice of teaching and learning, child development, relevant te reo and tikanga M ā ori and working with children and their families in Aotearoa New Zealand
    • Emphasis on teaching practice: you’ll be working (paid or voluntary) in a licensed early childhood centre for at least 12 hours per week during the programme

    Should I Become an Art Teacher?

    Art teachers are qualified educators and, in some instances, artists who instruct students in theoretical and practical knowledge of art theory, art history, aesthetics, visual art, ceramics, design and other art-related subjects. Art teachers may work with students from kindergarten through secondary school, based on their certification. Teaching art may be challenging, since some students might not consider it to be a serious subject and may not put forth their best efforts. On the other hand, turning students around and helping them find their ‘inner artists’ could be very rewarding for these teachers. Most teachers don’t have to work during the summer months, though some teach summer school.

    Step 1: Earn a Bachelor’s Degree

    As stated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), art teachers intending to instruct at the high school level usually undertake degree programs in the arts and augment them with classes in education, while art teachers who expect to teach elementary education generally complete bachelor’s degree programs associated with teaching. Education programs highlight areas such as child and adolescent development, teaching diverse learners and lesson planning. Art courses can include drawing, painting, sculpting, metalsmithing, printmaking, ceramics or photography, contingent upon the particular major a student chooses. Teacher education programs may be fulfilled simultaneously with the bachelor’s degree program or independently after attaining a bachelor’s degree. While attending college, a potential art teacher must satisfy an internship or supervised field experience at a local school.

    Step 2: Get a Teaching Certificate

    All states expect public school art teachers to possess state licensure, according to the BLS. Even though exact specifications differ by state, all states demand that individuals seeking a standard teaching license have a combination of education and experience acquired as an element of an approved teacher training program. In addition, the majority of states require that future educators complete competency exams that prove basic and subject matter knowledge. Apart from a bachelor’s degree and student teaching field experience, the policies for certification vary by state.

    Step 3: Complete a Master’s Degree

    Some public schools require teaching candidates to have a master’s degree. A number of master’s programs are intended for individuals who have attained a bachelor’s degree in art but are not certified or for educators certified in different fields who would like an art certification. Occasionally, art teachers with bachelor’s degrees enter a master’s degree program to further their careers even if their state does not expect education beyond a bachelor’s degree.

    Step 4: Obtain National Certification

    Although not a necessity, art teachers may pursue art teaching certificates through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) in Early and Middle Childhood or Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood. To apply for certification, an art teacher must have a bachelor’s degree, valid teaching license and a minimum of three years of work experience. Certification may take up to three years and entails demonstrating knowledge by means of a four-part portfolio and completion of six computer-based assessments. Depending on the state and district, the advantages of earning a certificate may include increased pay, reimbursement for qualifying educational expenses and the capability to teach in another state without having to acquire a new license.

    Step 5: Advance Your Career

    Art teachers can pursue further training and national certification to increase their salary. They can also teach classes with museums and organizations, or teach private lessons. Those with a master’s degree can continue their studies to earn a PhD and seek employment as a college art professor. Many postsecondary teachers pursue tenure through their college or university. Tenured college professors or those on a tenure track are paid more than part-time faculty and are periodically reviewed for promotion and salary increases.

    Emerald High School was established in 2005 as a progression from the highly academically successful Emerald Nursery and Primary School in Lagos, which was established in 1995. The establishment of Emerald High School was in response to the yearnings of parents in the primary school and the need to bridge the gap in providing high quality Secondary School Education in the country. We are aware of the problems of today’s child, which include a hostile society that has not much to offer by way of values/morals and cramped learning environment, which do not help the child to attain his/her full potentials. With a view to making the difference, we at Emerald took cognizance of the gaps in the education sector in deciding what facilities and personnel to emplace, right from the inception of the school.

    The permanent site, which became operational from September 2007 gives us even a better opportunity to explore all possibilities in child development. It is located in a 34 acres farmland in the serene valley of the sleepy Ogunrun-Ori Village in Ogun State, a mere 25 minutes leisurely drive from the former Toll Gate at the Lagos end of the Lagos-Ibadan Express Road. It is easily accessible from every part of the country by road or by air through Ibadan or Lagos axis. It is indeed an ideal learning environment because of its calm and beautiful scenery and insulation from city noise.

    The Board of Governors, which is made up of men and women who have distinguished themselves in their chosen professions, which include Accounting, Banking, Human Resources Management, Education and Public Service, is very confident of the quality of education it has fashioned out. No wonder then that many of the members have/had their children in the school.

    The school believes in building a solid foundation for the child, and as such goes to great length in emplacing holistic education programmes that incorporates best practices.We are always conscious of our vision of becoming a widely acclaimed school both locally and internationally and as such, we strive to turn out students with passion for excellence and who have been adequately prepared for tertiary education and life. We have put in place modern structures, quality manpower, condusive environment and adequate support services that a good school needs to run smoothly. Furthermore we have emplaced good security measures, students’ performance enhancing programmes, co-curricular activities, foreign Students exchange programmes coupled with regular visits to places of educational and social interest. We operate a robust information technology platform where students and teachers interact through their laptops and wide range network to complement classroom delivery.

    We handle with care the health and comfort of our students. The hostels are run by competent personnel and that are constantly being trained to cope with day to day challenges of a modern day hostel. The clinic is stocked with good quality drugs under the supervision of qualified matrons and other experienced medical staff. We have a working agreement with a nearby high standard hospital where health cases are referred and treated when the need arises.

    Our curriculum is a blend of British and Nigerian curriculum and the students write the following examinations: IGCSE, Checkpoint, NECO (Junior School) BECE and WASSCE. We also tutor students for TOEFL and SAT.

    The results have been impressive over the years and to sustain this, our teachers are regularly trained both locally and abroad. All students have an insurance cover provided by a prominent insurance service provider. The insurance policy covers the students to the extent that in the unlikely event of the loss of the breadwinner (who is named in the policy) while in the school, they are able to continue their education.

    The parents play a very important role in determining some of the policies of the school on the platform of the Parents Management Forum(PMF). The PMF of the school is headed by officers of high reputation and commitment who have been elected from the Parents. The parents on this platform partner with the school on various fronts in the education of the children.

    Palliative Care

    The Weston Park palliative care service aims to improve the quality of life of people (including carers) affected by cancer by paying attention to their physical, psychological, social and spiritual concerns.

    The palliative care team at Weston Park is made up of a consultant, two specialist nurses and a senior doctor in training who provide services to around 500 patients a year with life-limiting illness.

    The care includes:

    • Pain management
    • Symptom relief
    • Psychological support
    • Spiritual support
    • Carer support
    • End of life care

    The Palliative care team at Weston Park Hospital is part of the Sheffield Teaching hospital multidisciplinary palliative care team which includes St Luke’s Hospice.

    The team works closely with other services such as the chaplaincy social workers, discharge liaison, dietetics and physiotherapy services.

    They also work with the wider health care community in the Trent Region to make sure that there is a continuity of care provided to patients who may use their services.

    Who can have palliative care?

    Anyone with a life-limiting illness may be offered palliative care to help relieve the symptoms of their illness. This care can be given in conjunction with ongoing cancer treatment or on its own for people who need help with the effects of their condition.

    When can I see a member of the team?

    The team are available from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and they can visit any of the departments in the hospital including outpatient departments. Please ask your nurse or doctor if you would like to speak to one of the team.

    How is palliative care provided?

    On referral to the palliative care team a specialist nurse or doctor will visit you to make an assessment of your needs and will offer suggestions to help you manage those needs. The team may revisit you during you stay to review your situation. On discharge from the hospital a member of the team will refer you on to similar services in the community if there is an ongoing need.
