welcome to tUHSD
Message from our Superintendent
Dear TUHSD Community,
I would like to wish you all a very safe and enjoyable 4th of July holiday with your family and friends! I would also like to thank our veterans for their service to our amazing country.
We are currently enrolling for the 2017-2018 school year. Please check in with your neighborhood TUHSD school and make sure they have everything they need to ensure a smooth enrollment process for your students. We especially welcome those families who are sending their students to us for the very first time, including freshmen, student transfers, and those from other local areas. Welcome! We are so thrilled that you have selected us to provide your student with the best educational opportunities available. TUHSD is the best choice for a quality education! We look forward to making this a very rewarding school year for all of you.
As a reminder, please make a note of these important dates. Student walk-through enrollment and schedule pick-up dates are:
Friday, July 28 for Grade 12
Monday, July 31 for Grades 10 and 11
Tuesday, August 1 for Grade 9
(Check with your school for specific times)
First Day of School for Freshmen – August 7
First Day of School for All Students – August 8
Parent Night at All School Sites – August 16 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
I also want to share with you that we have just completed a very successful and well-attended Summer Academy on the campus of Sierra Linda. Enrollment for first session was 1,264 and second session was 1,083 with dedicated students that were ready to learn every day. Our summer food program, also on the campus of Sierra Linda High School, was a huge success with an average of 700 students eating a healthy, free meal every day.
While all of this was going on, we have had some great successes over the break with Sierra Linda art teacher, David Murrieta, using part of his summer to complete a mural in downtown Phoenix, highlighting Hispanic leadership and culture in Arizona. David made the news rounds and was a guest on Horizon, a public affairs show on PBS channel 8.
I would like to thank the city of Avondale for their continued partnership with our district and for inviting our students to participate in a poster contest for their annual Public Works calendar. Students in Mr. Zachary Kovach’s class submitted posters for consideration and eleven of the students’ posters were selected for inclusion in this year’s calendar. Be sure to pick up your Public Works calendar from the city of Avondale!
In addition, Jennifer Martinez, University High School’s student of the year, has been accepted to the prestigious Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA) program at Princeton University. Jennifer is one of 100 qualified high school juniors across the nation who show leadership potential and as a LEDA scholar; she will receive leadership training, writing instruction, standardized test preparation, and a year of highly personalized guidance as she navigates the application and admissions process at the most competitive colleges. Jennifer is representative of the many good things our students are accomplishing in their high school careers at TUHSD.
