Absolutely nothing aside from how close it was to where I had to write my exam

I disliked the fact that there was rotten food under my bed, insects both dead and alive, and tons a dirty used kleenex balled up under the bed. I disliked how rude the front desk staff were and I definitely disliked the too bad zero refunds policy

I was incredibly angry that I had to sleep in a dirty bug infested room before writing my licensure exam with the college of nurses I did not sleep because I was disgusted and upset. Made for a long 6hr exam and an even longer 4 hour drive home. Thanks for nothing!

Toronto Hotels

Dating back to the 18 th century, Toronto is Canada’s largest metropolis, and one of the world’s most diverse cities, with almost half of its population coming from outside Canada. You can get a flavour of the fantastic culture and cuisine of this vibrant melting pot with a stay in a cheap hotel in Toronto.

Spectacular sports

Sports are huge in Toronto, with the city’s baseball, hockey and basketball teams all competing in the major leagues, and if you’re interested in immersing yourself in these local institutions, a number of hotels in Toronto are conveniently close to the stadiums. Toronto’s hockey team, the Maple Leafs, play at the Air Canada Centre. and are perhaps the city’s premiere sports team, having won a record-breaking amount of trophies. It’s also worth stopping by the Rogers Centre. home of the Blue Jays baseball team, to see its beautifully lit curved roof, which gave the stadium its original name; the SkyDome.

Art and architecture

Making an instant first impression, the Royal Ontario Museum building is a startling mix of the old and the new. And the inside is just as impressive, with displays dedicated to local and international and ancient and modern cultures, as well as science, it’s essentially several museums in one. Similarly, the Art Gallery of Ontario also combines fascinating exhibits, including Canadian, European and African art, with acclaimed architecture by Frank Gehry.

Peaceful parks

Scale the heights of the CN Tower, once the tallest tower in the world, and look out over the cityscape and Lake Ontario, one of North America’s great lakes. Just off the coast from the upmarket developments of the city’s harbour, where you’ll also find a number of Toronto hotels, bars and restaurants, are the Toronto Islands , whose parkland and beaches are a great place to go to escape the bustle of the city.

Exotic eating

With so many international cultures meeting in the city, you’re bound to find a great choice of places to eat just a short stroll away from your cheap Toronto hotel. We particularly recommend the gourmet tapas of Agave y Aguacate. and, if you fancy exploring new culinary horizons, Ursa serves cutting-edge cuisine at prices that will suit all budgets.

Comedic culture

Surpassed only by the West End and Broadway, Toronto has a thriving theatre district, and is particularly known for stand-up and improv comedy scene. The city’s branch of the North American comedic institution The Second City has launched a wealth of performing talent, including the likes of Dan Aykroyd and Eugene Levy, and with the theatre putting on shows every night, you might just catch a future star in the making. And even if you’re not looking to catch a show, the historic Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres are a must-see, being the world’s last surviving Edwardian double-decker theatre.

Palliative care: Toronto left with few residential hospice beds

Every time a Perram House patient passed away, a staff member wrote that person s name and date of death on a small white card and placed it near a candle in the front entrance.

It was the 10-bed residential hospice s way of honouring the deceased, allowing their memory to remain in the heritage home s grand foyer, if only for a few more days.

One final card was written last month, but it didn t feature a patient s name. To the disappointment of those desperately needing palliative care in this city, it read: Perram House. April 10, 2013.

The hospice a yellow brick house at 4 Wellesley Place closed suddenly after nearly a decade of providing palliative care to Toronto residents from all walks of life.

Outraged staff accused board chair Frank McCrea of shutting down the union, which had recently organized to demand a wage increase. McCrea, meanwhile, blamed dwindling donations that had forced the charity to operate at a loss for months.

    Article Continued Below

Whatever the reason, the closure of Perram House leaves Toronto with only two residential hospices.

To me, it s really shocking, said Bill O Neill, executive director of Kensington Hospice, where the phone has been ringing constantly since Perram House closed. There s a real discrepancy between Toronto and other cities.

Kensington Hospice in downtown Toronto and Dorothy Ley Hospice in Etobicoke are now the city s only residential hospices, providing a total of 20 hospice beds for a population of 2.6 million. (Casey House, which serves AIDS patients, is classified as a hospital.)

By contrast, Saint John, N.B. has 10 beds for a population of 70,063.

Residential hospices are relatively new across Canada, but palliative care experts say they are a crucial option for patients who do not need to be in hospital and cannot die at home. They combine a home-like environment with 24-hour medical care and psychological support.

There are about 193 palliative care beds in Toronto hospitals, but most have a vacancy rate of close to zero and limit stays to 15 days. Patients can stay in a residential hospice for three months or longer.

As for home care, Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) funds three visiting hospice programs. But for patients with complex needs or without a family caregiver, it is only a short-term option.

The vast majority of Canadians say they want to die at home or in a hospice, but about 70 per cent die in hospitals. In the 2011 fiscal year, nearly 5,000 people died in an acute-care hospital in Ontario while receiving palliative care.

When there are no beds available. the patient generally ends up in a higher-cost setting, said Dr. James Downar, a palliative care physician at Toronto General Hospital. Acute-care beds are the most expensive setting in the entire system.

The daily cost of an acute-care bed in a hospital is between $850 and $1,100, compared with about $439 for a residential hospice bed.

Hospice patients receive care free-of-charge, but advocates say the savings are significant for a province trying to balance its books and hospices aren t just more efficient, they re more humane.

Coline Bettson s mother suffered a sudden brain aneurysm in March and moved into Perram House. The first night, nurses brought Bettson hot tea and set up the bed so she could cradle her 96-year-old mom in her arms.

Everything I asked for and she wanted, they agreed to. They couldn t have been more kind and caring, she said. I was stunned and appalled when I heard (the hospice closed).

In 2005, the Ministry of Health announced $115 million in palliative-care funding, including plans to fund the care costs of 34 residential hospices across the province.

Eight years later, 24 of those hospices have been built and receive annual funding of $90,000 per bed. The remainder of hospice budgets between 20 and 50 per cent must be raised through donations.

McCrea, the former Perram House board chair, said fundraising had always been a struggle.

New Democrat health critic France G linas said the ministry should fully fund residential hospices, as it does long-term care.

It s been unacceptable from the beginning, she said. Hospices deal with vulnerable people in their last days of life. It s wrong to let them rely on donations.

Health Minister Deb Matthews said in an interview that the province had come a long way since before 2005, when hospices were entirely self-funded.

We are transforming how we deliver health care, Matthews said. We are committed to investing more in the community sector and getting people out of hospital who don t need to be in hospital.

She said the health ministry dedicated $260 million to community services, including hospice and home care, in the 2013 budget. The Toronto Central LHIN has convened a working group on palliative care access.

Rick Firth of Hospice Palliative Care Ontario said most hospices are able to fundraise successfully, but Perram House may have struggled because it prioritized marginalized and homeless people.

The donations from families don t come in at the same volume, he said. That may be something we need to look at in the future.

Firth said the loss of Perram House will be felt in Toronto for the time being. Two of the hospices promised funding in 2005 were supposed to be in the city, but neither has broken ground yet.

The Toronto Commandery Hospice finally acquired land last year in North York, but is awaiting approval of its zoning application. The Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care in Scarborough still has no timeline for opening a hospice.

But Emily s House a long-planned pediatric hospice at Gerrard St. E. and Broadview Ave. is nearing the end of construction at last and hopes to open its doors at the end of May.

As for Perram House, the stunning home of sweeping staircases and vaulted ceilings built by widower Mary Perram in 1887, it now occupies prime downtown real estate, on Wellesley Pl. between Jarvis and Sherbourne Sts.

McCrea owns the home but has said he hasn t made a decision about the property. As a designated heritage home, it would require city council approval to be demolished.

Pete Perram, Mary s 52-year-old great-great-grandson, said the worst-case scenario would be for it to be turned into a condo building.

Mary intended it to be for the good of the people, the good of the community, he said. I hope that, as a legacy to her and to our family, that continues.

    Hospice Overview

    The Dorothy Ley Hospice

Fostering hope and dignity through exemplary care, advocacy, education and research for individuals living with the challenges of a life-limiting illness or loss.

The Dorothy Ley Hospice is a volunteer-based community service organization offering compassionate care to people living with the challenges of a life-limiting illness or loss. Our goal is to provide comfort and help them manage so they can live every day to the fullest with dignity, meaning and hope. All of our services are offered at no cost to the individual thanks to the generosity of our donors, government funding and the support of our community partners.

Our programs and services meet a variety of support needs for individuals, families and care providers. Any individual facing the challenges of a life-limiting illness, regardless of age or medical condition, can access hospice support. We also provide support services for their family members.

The Dorothy Ley Hospice has two key programs — a community program and a residential program. Services offered through out community program are available from the time of diagnosis of a life limiting illness. The residential program is available to people who have three months or less to live.

Most of us – including our friends and family members – will ultimately face a life-limiting illness and loss. In fact, as the population ages and the structure of our health care system evolves, there are few options for the terminally ill who need physical, emotional and spiritual support. The Dorothy Ley Hospice fills that critical void.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, the Hospice is able to provide services at no cost to the individuals we serve. This is why every dollar we receive from individuals, foundations, corporations, organizations, churches and special events is appreciated and valued.

Our total budget to serve more than 3,000 individuals a year is almost $3 million. The provincial government funding covers 60 per cent of our costs and we need to fundraise the remaining 40 per cent or $1.1 million a year from the community.

Thank you for making a difference during one of the most challenging times in a person s life.

For specific information about our services, please feel free to contact us directly or visit our website at www.dlhospice.org. We will be happy to provide an assessment of your needs and, if we are unable to help you, we can put you in touch with the most appropriate service provider.

More This was a last-minute booking for the Toronto International Film Festival because it became clear at the last minute that we were invited as film co-producers. As a result of every other room in town being taken, a top-floor unmodernized room was all that was available. It was cheap and the view over downtown Toronto was simply outstanding. But as for the room itself, it appeared ready for use as a film set for a suicide movie! Cleaners had obviously done their best with the extremely worn furniture and decor, and there were no bed-bugs or roaches, but one gained the impression they might appear at any moment. Air-conditioning is an external unit. There was also a problem with the door lock that I was forced to repair myself before the room could be called remotely secure. Perhaps the top floor rooms have now been modernised? Perhaps the other rooms are better? I am reluctant to give bad reviews, but on this single occasion this hotel did not meet most travellers standards.

More I never write reviews, in fact I m a very laid back person, I am not a complainer, and I m easy going, however I feel the need to write a review about Studio 6. The pricing for what you get is unacceptable. You see some pictures, you look at the location, you think it s a good deal, however when I arrived, things were not organized, the staff could not locate my booking. They were being extremely rude to the point it was actually awkward for no apparent reason. They charged me $30 for parking, when parking was cheaper for other guests, and to top it off, the room I got was a mess, I went back down to complain the beds weren t done and the bathroom looked dirty and they had the audacity to say it s impossible, as if I d make a mess and come back down to complain. I had such an uncomfortable experience, I ve never experienced something like this. Now the reason why I am writing this review despite the above, was when I got home, a few days later I had bed bug bites on my arms and now I have no idea if they got in my luggage, or if I have them in my house or bed now. Awful awful experience. I don t know who runs this place but STAY AWAY.

Alexandra Park 165 Grange Avenue, Toronto

Cassandra C. – look, the decor is east germany circa 1979. no frills, little space, no comfy chair. but it was clean and safe. clean? i am paranoid about bedbugs and investigated thoroughly after watching a tutorial on youtube. no bugs at all. safe? the last night we were there my husband left the door unlocked all night and we re still here to write about it. the neighborhood doesn t seem the least bit sketchy to us, but we re from hollywood and the haight ashbury. and we loved the location. queen st. was soo cool. kensington market is a few blocks away. heard it will soon be turned into a motel 6 accor.

Entertainment District, Downtown Core 255 Wellington Street West, Toronto

Ja K. – Convenient downtown location. Staff were courteous with the few requests we had, and rewards members are likely to get the appropriate perks that come with their tiers. This hotel, as with many others in Ontario, includes the DMF/DMP/TIF in the bill, but removed it when asked. Breakfast is complimentary with this brand, and it was decent for hotel breakfast food. We would stay again.

Downtown Core 65 Dundas Street E, Toronto

Jeff G. – The Bond Place hotel is as central as it gets when it comes to finding an accomodation in Downtown Toronto. Right near Yonge-Dundas square, its uber convenient if you and your friends are having a night out. The rates are very fair which is a great bonus for such a busy area. Nearby there are many restaurants and many bars. Of course, bay street, Eaton centre, the CN tower and many other attractions are within walking distance as well. On the outside, the hotel seems sub-par, however, once inside, you are greeted by a modernly renovated lobby area. The rooms are renovated as well and generally, it is quite clean. The wood flooring in the rooms is much more reassuring of cleanliness to me than carpet would be. Additionally, I planned a surprise party at a hotel room and the staff were very willing to help. I really appreciated it and I will remember this hotel when I am in Toronto next time. There are some downsides however. Parking is 20-30/night. The cheaper option means you need to be out by 12pm otherwise you will need to pay the more expensive price. Another downside is the really really slow elevator. It was a bit awkward waiting for so long. Overall though, as mentioned above, I would return.

Church-Wellesley Village, Downtown Core 475 Yonge Street, Toronto

    Hotels, Venues & Event Spaces

Lee Anna B. – It appears this hotel is in the process of renovation. which apparently makes it a GREAT hotel. The room was spacious and comfortable. Pillows fluffy, bed soft. Bathroom was nice and spacious. The restaurant was nice and affordable. I can t speak for the staff as I didn t come in contact with them. But for a hotel that seems more like a traditional Marriott (minus someone greeting you at the door]. The construction disturbed some of the stay so I would love to review after complete. It should look am amazing. The elevators are very small. Booked through Hotels Tonight.

Toronto Hotels Although it’s Canada’s most populated city; Toronto is a friendly and welcoming place to stay, with a multicultural population and a busy cultural calendar. Perched on Lake Ontario, the city has both modern business districts full of shiny skyscrapers, and beautifully preserved historic areas where industrial architecture has been turned into unique shops and restaurants. Whether you’re here on a business trip, or enjoying a city break, try to make some time to stroll through the different neighborhoods, with somewhere to suit all kinds of travelers. Things to see If there’s a big ice hockey or basketball game on, then the modern Air Canada Centre is the place to be, with thrilling NHL and NBA action from the local teams. Toronto is a sport obsessed city, and whether you share their enthusiasm, or simply want to soak up the lively atmosphere, catching a game is a great way to spend an evening. The center doubles up as a concert venue, with gigs from big name rock and pop acts packing out the stadium. If your tastes are more towards the classical, then the Royal Conservatory of Music has a vast, wood paneled auditorium with perfect acoustics. On the calendar you’ll find concerts from the masters of their instruments, as well as showcases by the up and coming conservatory students. Toronto Zoo lies just outside the city center, with over 700 acres of exhibits, themed around different areas of the world. In one day you can explore the African Savanna, seeing rhinos and zebras up close, before moving onto the rainforest with monkeys swinging through the trees. There’s also an area dedicated to Canada’s own creatures, from grizzly bears to buffalo, which you can safely view up close. Hotels in Toronto Visiting Toronto suits all sorts of budgets, with a wide range of accommodation from affordable inns to 5 star hotels. If you’re looking for luxury hotels in Toronto, then you’ll find many stylish high rise hotels in the city center, including 24 hour facilities such as health clubs and business centers. The Garden District is where you’ll find the city’s botanical gardens, as well as a broad selection of architecture from grand churches to cool art deco theaters. How to get to Toronto Toronto Pearson International Airport is one of Canada’s largest, with a huge number of domestic and international flights coming through on a regular basis. The airport is about half an hour from downtown by car, although as with any city, traffic can really slow you down. Union Station is also a popular arrival point, with Via Rail services connecting Toronto to cities around Canada, as well as Amtrak services to New York City. There are also suburban Go Transit trains for commuters, as well as linking to Toronto to Niagara Falls.

    Toronto iPhone App Development Services

Whether you’re a tech start-up with a new idea for smartphone software or an established business, Dogtown Media offers all the mobile app development resources and services you need to create a commercially viable iPhone app. We guide you through every step of the process, drawing on our talented team of in-house professionals can help you refine your concept, design, code and launch your app on the app stores.

We can develop a customized iPhone app solution to meet your specifications and scale accordingly to satisfy user demands.

The Toronto iPhone app developers at our company can assist you in every phase of the mobile app development process. From fleshing out an idea to submitting a finalized app into the iTunes app store, we have the experience and wherewithal to make your big dreams come to fruition at a price you can afford.

    Toronto Mobile App Developers

All apps begin in the same place: with an idea. While every successful app fills an open niche in the market, there are many different approaches you can take. At Dogtown Media, we understand how to develop iPhone apps with broad-use potential as well as software products with a highly targeted and specific focus. We will help you identify and zero in on your market niche, and elevate your idea to a new level.

It sound easy, but the truth is that app development can be a very demanding process. Our team of iPhone app developers in Toronto have a proven track record in the software development industry, and are experts at taking apps from idea to market.

We draw on complete professional tools to create a prototype for your app, refining its layout, features and functionality before finalizing its design. From there, we create a customized programming strategy and schedule, then move into the next phase of app development.

Challenges can arise during the app programming phase, which is why we’ve assembled one of the top teams of app programmers in the country. We constantly test, troubleshoot, and refine your app’s programming needs to ensure optimal functionality and easy integration with the various iPhone models and compatible devices.

When the programming phase is complete, your idea will have moved from a concept to a fully functioning app that’s ready for market. At this point, we’ll turn the task of connecting your app to a user base over to our software marketing experts.

While app design, development, and programming all pose challenges, one of the biggest hurdles you’ll have to clear is getting your app noticed. App distribution can create difficult obstacles. After all, the mobile software market is highly competitive, and new products are being released all the time. It can seem overwhelming, and even the most talented app developers and programmers can feel lost without specialized distribution and marketing guidance.

Our consultants offer refined, proven strategies for getting your app into the hands of a wide base of potential users. If you would like to learn more about our process, or if you have any other questions about our services, please contact us for a free initial development consultation.
