    Volunteering in hospice is a choice that creates rewards for patients and families. The ultimate surprise is the growth a volunteer develops from learning more about themselves, learning to communicate in ways that increase appreciation for life as daily situations take on a holistic perspective.

    Hospice volunteer training can be done conveniently at home or wherever there is access to a computer.

    The hospice volunteer program is designed to help strengthen the understanding of hospice for volunteers and those seeking more information on caring for a loved one with a terminal illness.

    *Note: On site hospice training programs are not replaced by this course. The training addresses the core concepts that Medicare Conditions of Participation require for hospice volunteer services. After completion of training, the student must complete agency specific protocols to volunteer with hospice.     Hospice agencies can request a service agreement to have their own personalized site. The agency can train their own volunteers and be billed monthly for $10 per volunteer and a low $10 monthly site fee. The site fee includes set up of a unique site, technical support, and certificates for graduating volunteers with the hospice agency name on the certificate.     Nursing education programs in Florida that hold specialized nursing accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or by the Collegiate Commission on Nursing Education (CCNE) are not regulated by the Florida Board of Nursing.     The automotive industry is becoming more technologically-advanced every day. It is certainly a great advantage for mechanics-to-be to seek higher education in the automotive field, and also to continue that education to stay on the cutting edge of the trade. Now, automotive enthusiasts have the opportunity to explore their passion through online degree programs in car-care fields.

    How Online Automotive Programs Work

    Students enrolled in online automotive programs will typically have all necessary materials available to them on the Internet and through downloads. Additional materials may be mailed out for the student to have a means of studying independent of the Internet, if necessary. If students have questions, they can contact their instructor through e-mail or make an educational support phone call. Examinations are completed online and students move forward once they’ve completed their chapter testing.

    Computer Addiction

    Some people develop bad habits with their computer use that may cause significant problems in their lives. The types of behavior and negative consequences are similar to those of known addictive disorders, so the term computer or Internet addiction has come into use.

    While anyone who uses a computer could be vulnerable, those people who are lonely, shy, easily bored or suffering from another addiction or impulse control disorder are especially vulnerable to computer addiction.

    Computer addiction can result from people using it repeatedly as their main stress reliever instead of having a variety of ways to cope with negative events and feelings. Other misuses may include procrastination from undesirable responsibilities, distraction from being upset and attempts to meet needs for companionship and belonging.

    While discussions are ongoing about whether excessive use of the computer/Internet is an addiction, the potential problematic behaviors and effects on users seem to be clear.

    Signs of Problematic Computer Use

    A person who is addicted to the computer is likely to have several of the experiences and feelings listed below:

    • Mixed feelings of well-being and guilt while at the computer.
    • Unsuccessful efforts to quit or limit computer use.
    • Losing track of time while on the computer.
    • Neglecting friends, family and/or responsibilities in order to be online.
    • Lying about time spent on the computer/activities while online.
    • Feeling anxious, depressed or irritable when computer time is shortened or interrupted.
    • Using the computer repeatedly as an outlet when sad, upset or for sexual gratification.
    • Problems in school/work as a result of time spent and the type of activities accessed on the computer.
    • When not on the computer, frequent thoughts and anticipation of using it again.

    Being addicted to the computer also may cause physical discomfort, including:

    • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (pain, numbness and burning in the hands that can radiate up the wrists, elbows and shoulders).
    • Dry eyes or strained vision.
    • Back and neck aches.
    • Severe headaches.
    • Sleep disturbances.

    Risks for College Students

    • Difficulty getting homework done because computer games occupy a great deal of your time.
    • You connect to the Internet and suddenly discover it is several hours later and you have not left the computer.
    • Your friends are worried about you going on a date alone with a person known only from a chat room.
    • You spend most of your time online talking to friends from home instead of making new friends at college.
    • Almost all your friends are from online activities and contacts.
    • Your romantic partner is distraught because you have replaced your sexual relationship with Internet pornography and/or online sex.

    Treatment must begin with recognizing there is a problem. Overcoming denial should be followed by other treatment steps, including:

    • Creating a behavior modification plan, such as setting a timer for usage, planning a daily schedule, keeping a log of moods when online, matching time spent online with time spent socializing face-to-face, and taking part in non-computer related activities.
    • Focusing on other areas for skill enhancement, such as problem solving, assertiveness, social skills, overcoming shyness and anger control.
    • Assessing for other disorders like depression or anxiety that may need medical treatment.
    • Assist in locating or forming a support group for other students who are trying to regain control over their computer use.

    How to Help a Computer-Obsessed Friend

    • Be a good role model. Manage the computer use in your own life.
    • Introduce them to other people who handle their computer use sensibly.
    • Get them involved in non-computer related fun.
    • Talk to your friend about your concerns.
    • Support their desire for change if they think they have a problem.
    • Encourage them to seek professional counseling.

    What an Electrician Does

    Structures used for residential and commercial purposes all have electrical wiring for lights, climate control, alarm systems, appliances, and whatever else draws current. The electrician is in the middle of construction projects and installs wiring to provide the required power feed based on specifications provided by the building designer. Some of their usual job tasks include:

    After four years of debate, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR ) was ratified by the European Union during April 2016 and has now become law, although member states have a two year period to implement into national law.     You have decided to become a certified nursing assistant in Louisiana and are willing to devote the time and effort required to complete a state-approved CNA class. One of the questions you might have is how long it takes to complete a nurse aide course? Regardless of the type of facility offering a nurse assistant program, the curriculum must include eighty (80) hours of instruction. The classroom and clinical training are divided equally, with forty (40) hours dedicated to classroom teaching and the remaining forty (40) hours spent during clinical practice. All CNA classes and training programs must address the totality of a resident’s needs, including physical, psychosocial, environmental, and medical needs.

    Nursing assistant students are thought about the attitudes and behaviors that result in a positive impact on a resident’s physical and mental condition. Clinical practice focuses on mastering a set of limited nurse aide skills necessary to provide assistance, support, and basic patient care. The majority of CNA training programs in Louisiana are being offered by two-year community colleges. The length of each particular course varies depending on which institution and class you choose to attend, but typical nurse aide programs take approximately one semester to complete.     There are no federal regulations stating that individuals are required to have a high school diploma prior to attending nurse aide classes but some states such as Florida require a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to testing if you are under 18 years old and have not attended a training program. A program coordinator at the school or nursing facility which is offering CNA training classes may tell you if a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required in order to enroll in the nurse aide program. Some facilities do not require a diploma as long as you have completed a 10th grade high school education. In the state of Texas a high school diploma or a GED is not necessary in order to attend and complete a nursing assistant program.

    There is a wide disparity between CNA training requirements among the states. The difference lies in the mandatory number of total training hours necessary to complete state-approved CNA classes .

    While according to federal law each nursing assistant course should contain a minimum of seventy-five (75) instruction and clinical hours, individual states have the liberty to mandate extra training requirements for certified nursing assistants. The majority of states exceed the threshold federal minimum requirements for nurse aide training programs because they are considered insufficient to result in an optimal and safe level of care for clients.

    A review of nationwide state requirements for nurse assistant courses has found that the following states have mandated highest number of CNA program hours: Maine with a minimum of 90 hours of theory, 20 hours of laboratory skills and 70 hours of clinical instruction for a total of 180 hours; California with one hundred and sixty (160) training hours; Delaware and Oregon each requiring one hundred and fifty (150) hours; followed by the state of Alaska with one hundred and forty (140) hours; Virginia, Arizona, and West Virginia have a minimum of one hundred and twenty (120) training hours for state-approved classes.

    Welcome to the official SEVP and SEVIS website. Here you can find the latest information and resources for F (academic) and M (vocational) students, as well as designated school officials (DSOs).

    The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) is a part of the National Security Investigations Division and acts as a bridge for government organizations that have an interest in information on nonimmigrants whose primary reason for coming to the United States is to be students.

    On behalf of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), SEVP manages schools, nonimmigrant students in the F and M visa classifications and their dependents. The Department of State (DoS) manages Exchange Visitor Programs, nonimmigrant exchange visitors in the J visa classification and their dependents. Both SEVP and DoS use the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) to track and monitor schools; exchange visitor programs; and F, M and J nonimmigrants while they visit the United States and participate in the U.S. education system.

    What is SEVP?

    The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) is the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) program that administers the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). It ensures that government agencies have essential data related to nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors to preserve national security. SEVP provides approval and oversight to schools authorized to enroll F and M nonimmigrant students and gives guidance to both schools and students about the requirements for maintaining their status.

    What is SEVIS?

    SEVIS is a web-based system for maintaining information on international nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors in the United States. It is the core technology for the DHS in this critical mission. SEVIS implements Section 641 of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, which requires DHS to collect current information from nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors continually during their course of stay in the United States. In addition, the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001 (USA PATRIOT Act; Public Law 107-56, amended Section 641) mandated implementation of SEVIS prior to Jan. 1, 2003.

    What is the purpose of SEVIS?

    SEVIS tracks and monitors nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors. If accepted by an SEVP-certified school, foreign students may be admitted to the United States with the appropriate F or M nonimmigrant status. If accepted for participation in a Department of State-verified exchange visitor program, exchange visitors may be admitted to the United States with J nonimmigrant status. Records of these nonimmigrant admissions and continued participation in these educational programs are maintained in SEVIS. Further, SEVIS enables SEVP to assure proper reporting and record keeping by schools and exchange visitor programs, thereby ensuring data currency and integrity. SEVIS also provides a mechanism for student and exchange visitor status violators to be identified so that appropriate enforcement is taken (i.e. denial of admission, denial of benefits or removal from the United States).

    Who are F and M nonimmigrant students?

    The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) provides for the admission of different classes of nonimmigrants who are foreign nationals seeking temporary admission to the United States. The purpose of the nonimmigrant’s intended stay in the United States determines his or her proper nonimmigrant classification. Some classifications permit the nonimmigrant’s spouse and qualifying children to accompany the nonimmigrant to the United States or to join the nonimmigrant here. To qualify, a child must be unmarried and under the age of 21.

    F-1 nonimmigrants, as defined in section 101(a)(15)(F) of the INA, are foreign students coming to the United States to pursue a full course of academic study in SEVP-approved schools. An F-2 nonimmigrant is a foreign national who is the spouse or qualifying child of an F-1 student.

    M-1 nonimmigrants, as defined in section 101(a)(15)(M) of the INA, are foreign nationals pursuing a full course of study at an SEVP-approved vocational or other recognized nonacademic institution (other than in language training programs) in the United States. An M-2 nonimmigrant is a foreign national who is the spouse or qualifying child of an M-1 student.

    The launch of the Study in the States website was part of this initiative. Sponsored by DHS and managed by SEVP, this website provides a wealth of information and resources to encourage the best and brightest international students to study and learn about expanded post-graduate opportunities in the United States.

    The Study in the States website allows ICE and its partner agencies, as well as DoS, to more effectively communicate information to international students, exchange visitors and their dependents. The site features dynamic and interactive content in a user-friendly manner and uses social media tools, such as Facebook. Twitter and LinkedIn to provide updates to visitors around the globe.

    SEVP collects, maintains, analyzes and provides information so only legitimate foreign students or exchange visitors gain entry to the United States. The result is an easily accessible information system that provides timely information to Department of State, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as well as a number of other federal enforcement agencies with “need to know.”

    Job Description

    A hospice care aide helps individuals unable of helping themselves. These aides travel to the patient s home and help them perform activities required for daily life. Hospice care aides are often associated with the elderly or disabled who are unable to take care of themselves, so they perform all required functions specific to the patient.

    Most of the time, a hospice aide is the first position an individual may take at the beginning of their career. Alternatively, an individual may seek such a career if they are interested in the nursing field, but do not have the required education or training. Most functions performed are rather fundamental in nature, and do not require much training.

    Hospice aides usually work within a hospice environment or travel to the patient s home. They help the individual eat, get up out of bed, or help them with the bathroom or a bedpan. The number of duties involved depends on the nature and the status of the patient, since they are expected to help the patient function as normally as possible. If working within a hospice environment, they work with individual patients to make their final days as comfortable as possible. If working in a home environment, they spend time sitting with or caring for an elderly or disabled patient who requires extra care.

    Many times, families of patients in either a home or hospice environment can t commit to 24 hour care, so they hire a hospice aide to help during the times they are absent. Hospice aides travel to the home and work in shifts providing round the clock supervision and care. They aren t usually a registered nurse or hold a license and cannot usually administer medication, so the responsibilities are typically fundamental.

    Training/Educational Requirements

    There is no educational or training requirement for this position. A hospice aide learns from on-the-job training with a registered nurse or a nurse s aide. They learn the proper way to do things such as help a patient out of bed or assist with a bedpan by observing other nurses and by practicing. Oftentimes the family of the patient has a particular way they want things done, so the best training comes from working directly on the job.

    The National Association for Home Care and Hospice ( NAHC ) offers certification for personal and home care aides throughout the country. This certification is not mandatory although individuals may opt to gain it to demonstrate they have met established industry standards. It can be a simple certification and lend way to further development within this role. Those individuals wishing to gain their certification must complete a 75-hour course, observe and document work in up to 17 different skills signed off by a registered nurse. In addition, they must successfully pass a final exam. Although this isn t a requirement, it can certainly lend way to more opportunities for advancement.

    There are some high school courses that prepare for this role. At the early stages, an individual can do a co-op job to better prepare themselves for becoming a hospice aide. There are some standalone classes an individual can take in patient care which prepares them for the real thing. Individuals interested in a career as a hospice aide receive basic training from the company they work for before they are sent to a patient s home.

    When working in a hospice environment, the facility will provide some training not only in how to care for a patient but also in how to make them comfortable as they prepare for death. There are certain personality traits such as patience and compassion that are required for such a role since most patients are elderly, disabled, or dying.

    How to Get Hired

    Most individuals wishing to get a job as a hospice aide look for employment with a home health care services company. This is usually the best way to get hired because the patients and their families go to such a company to hire this type of individual. It helps to take training classes or work through a high school co-op to prepare for this role. In turn, this also helps to get hired much faster.

    For the hospice aide wishing to get hired into a hospice environment, it helps to apply to the facility directly. Usually these facilities are looking for background and experience since patients who come in here require a certain type of personality. It is also helpful to have experience working with a dying patient.

    Although there is no specific educational requirement for this position, experience helps to get hired. It is especially true for families who are hiring someone to come to their home and care for their loved one.

    Job Prospects, Employment Outlook, and Career Development

    There is expected to be a better than average increase in the hiring of hospice aides. This role is expected to grow as families continue to look for individuals to care for their loved ones in a home or hospice environment. Since this is an entry-level position, the requirements for hiring are much lower. Therefore, it appeals to those who may not have a college education. There is a high potential for growth since people oftentimes don t want to work within an entry-level role.

    As more hospice centers become a popular environment, the need for hospice aides will increase. So, too, will the need to keep aging or disabled family members in their home rather than sending them to a nursing home. This means there will be an increased need for individuals in this role, and within the home health care services business.

    Working Environment

    Depending on the type of facility a hospice aide wishes to work within, the environment may be slightly different. If focused within home health care, the individual will often travel to patient s homes. The assignment may last for a short time or may become a regular job. Individuals in this role care for more than one patient in their home or sometimes travel between a variety of different patient s homes. It all depends on the patients, the workload and the hours required. However, if focused within the home health care niche, hospice aides can expect the working environment to be an actual home. If focused within the hospice niche, it is expected to work within such a facility or institution. These facilities strive to create a cozy environment for their patients so they can be comfortable before they die. This work environment is more like an actual medical facility, but feels cozier.

    Salary and Benefits

    As of 2006, the average earnings for a hospice aide was about $9.34 an hour. The range averaged anywhere from $7.99 all the way up to $13 per hour depending on the facility. In some instances, a home health care company pays slightly higher depending on the environment and patient s needs. The more experience an individual has, the more they can expect to earn per hour.

    Since these are hourly positions, most of the time hospice aides work without any true benefits. Any travel expenses incurred are the individuals responsibility and are often not reimbursed. Instead, a flat hourly rate is given to hospice aides. For those working within a hospice environment, they can expect some benefits if they are hired by the facility directly.

    BAKERSFIELD, CA – Optimal Hospice is looking for volunteers. Whether it’s a skill or just time, organizers say everyone has something to offer.

    Assistant volunteer coordinator Karen Budnick says volunteers play an important role in hospice.

    Budnick said, They’re able to give family members a break so that they can step away and some times it’s just so they can go to the grocery store or go to a doctor’s appointment.

    Thursday morning, new volunteers learned more about their role.

    It’s end of life, which I think that a lot of us are not comfortable with the end of life, but when you realize that it’s living life to the fullest and helping somebody do that, it really captures your heart, said Budnick.

    Volunteer Tim Brewer said, There’s a whole lot of satisfaction in just giving, period.

    Brewer is part of the veteran to veteran program, providing support to patients and family members who served in the military.

    We would love to have more veteran volunteers, pet therapy, really any type of volunteers. We have volunteers that cut hair, massage, visit, listen to wonderful stories, said Budnick.

    Your first step toward a career in Aviation Maintenance Science is obtaining your FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A P) Certification.
    Global’s hands-on approach trains students in the specific skills employers seek in the airframe powerplant mechanics and aircraft inspection fields. Students take courses in simulated work environments from instructors with real-world experience.
    Our curriculum was developed by educators and industry representatives to ensure that course offerings accurately reflect current industry standards. Students must complete the required course to qualify for the program’s Certificate of Achievement. Once trained, technicians will also be successful in related fields of aircraft manufacturing, electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, welding, sheet metal, quality control, civil and military defense.
    F.A.A. Eligibility Requirements
    The A P mechanics course is for applicants who meet FAR 65.71-65.77 only. Under these regulations, you must have a certain type of mechanical experience before the F.A.A. will allow you to take the F.A.A. written exams. The required experience for the powerplant mechanic rating is a minimum of 18 months working with tools on any type of aircraft engine. The required experience for the airframe mechanic rating is a minimum of 18 months working with tools on any type of airframe. If you want both ratings, and your experience was a combination of airframe and powerplant, then you need a total of 30 months experience (not 36).
    Obtaining Your Authorization Slips
    To be enrolled in GLOBAL SCHOOL OF AERONAUTICS as a mechanic student, you must first meet the F.A.A. experience requirements. The purpose of this is to be sure the F.A.A. will permit you to take the written exam after you finish the course.
    Oral and Practical Examinations
    The F.A.A. requires the written results to be in the student’s hands before an Oral and Practical examination may be given. Therefore, in order to take an oral and practical examination with one of our examiners, you must bring your written score slips and your airmen certificate and/or rating application 8610-2. Your F.A.A. inspector should give you two copies of the 8610-2 form, both bearing original signatures. Photo copied signatures are not accepted.
    Classroom Time
    The average time to obtain the A P rating is from 11 – 13 days. Our instructors work closely with each student, progressing him/her based on their own capabilities. Our course is guaranteed 100% – we keep working with you until you pass – good for 36 months.

    Voicemail 101: Simple Steps That May Save You Hours

    First and foremost, read the book that came with your voicemail system. Over the course of a year, you may waste a few hours repeating whole messages if you don’t know the simple commands for forwarding and rewinding calls. What? You’ve lost the book, or they never gave you one? No excuse: www.google.com. Search for your phone model, and you will probably find the manual. No time to read it? Bring it with you to meetings, on airplanes, the grocery store – find a minute here or there to pick up a new tip.

    1. Identify your name, organization, and telephone number in your outgoing message.

    “Hi, this is Karen Smith with Adcomine at 212-555-1234.”

    1. State that you are not available and any other important information.

    “I’m out of the office today,January 3rd, 2006. I will be returningJanuary 5th, 2006. I will not check voicemail until I am back. If this is an emergency or you need immediate assistance, please call Bill Withers at 917-555-6543.”

    1. Tell people how to leave an appropriate message. That’s right, if you want good information, ask for it.

    “Please leave a brief message stating how I can help you, along with your phone number, and I will call you back.”

    1. If you prefer email, offer that as an option to callers. If you have an unusual name or company name, spell out the email address.

    “You may want to email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ”

    1. To cut down on repeat calls if you work in a high-volume call area, state that you will return calls within 24 hours or whatever time period your organization’s policy on return calls requires.
    2. If you update your message when you go out of town, don’t forget to update it again when you get back.
    3. If your system allows callers to bypass your message by hitting the pound key, tell them that, especially if you have an unusually long message.

    When to Check and How to Check Voicemail.

    The number of times you check voicemail each day will vary depending on your job function and industry. However, if you have not told people differently, at a minimum you should check messages once a day and return those calls. Here are some other helpful tips for checking voicemail.

    1. Have a pen and paper ready when you begin dialing – duh. (This is Voicemail 101).
    2. Listen to all of the messages before you start returning calls.
    3. Remember that you don’t have to return them in the order they were received.
    4. Sometimes it’s easier to return calls when you are pretty sure the recipients won’t pick up the telephone. You can answer their questions on their voicemail and move on with your day.
    5. If you are super busy and have the luxury of an assistant or some other kind soul, ask this person to return some of your phone calls. This is especially good if it is going to take an unusually long time for you to get back with someone.
    6. Don’t save messages you really don’t need. If you wrote down the information from the call, most of the time there is no reason to save the original recording. After all, do you really want your box so full no one can leave a message? That’s embarrassing and unprofessional. Imagine that you are charging clients big bucks, and they can’t leave messages because you can’t get your act together well enough to leave them adequate recording room. Pitiful.

    Leaving Effective Voicemails

    When leaving messages, have mercy on your listeners and do the following:

    1. Speak slowly and leave your phone number at the beginning and the end of the message.
    2. Limit your comments to one or two subjects. Voicemail is not a one-person show.
    3. If you are rambling, for the sake of others and your reputation, stop yourself and rerecord.
    4. If you need action of some sort, state what you need. Voicemails that simply say, “call me” are irritating at best.
    5. If the recipient of your messages tends to fall into the trap listed in the previous point, tell him or her, “When you return my call, please leave a message on my voicemail to let me know the status of the project if I’m not able to pick up the phone.”
    6. If you are using a group distribution list that lists everyone’s name on the message, read the manual for your phone system and put the list at the end. If people want to listen to it they can.

    Sample of a Perfect Voicemail

    “Hi, this is Karen Smith with Adcomine at 212-555-1234. I’m calling to let you know that we have received your package and will have a response to you by Friday. If you have any questions, please call me. Again, Karen Smith with Adcomine at 212-555-1234.”

    There you have it: Voicemail 101 in a nutshell. A little careful planning and attention can free your time and help you view voicemail as the useful tool that it is rather than the torture it can be.
