Job Description

A hospice care aide helps individuals unable of helping themselves. These aides travel to the patient s home and help them perform activities required for daily life. Hospice care aides are often associated with the elderly or disabled who are unable to take care of themselves, so they perform all required functions specific to the patient.

Most of the time, a hospice aide is the first position an individual may take at the beginning of their career. Alternatively, an individual may seek such a career if they are interested in the nursing field, but do not have the required education or training. Most functions performed are rather fundamental in nature, and do not require much training.

Hospice aides usually work within a hospice environment or travel to the patient s home. They help the individual eat, get up out of bed, or help them with the bathroom or a bedpan. The number of duties involved depends on the nature and the status of the patient, since they are expected to help the patient function as normally as possible. If working within a hospice environment, they work with individual patients to make their final days as comfortable as possible. If working in a home environment, they spend time sitting with or caring for an elderly or disabled patient who requires extra care.

Many times, families of patients in either a home or hospice environment can t commit to 24 hour care, so they hire a hospice aide to help during the times they are absent. Hospice aides travel to the home and work in shifts providing round the clock supervision and care. They aren t usually a registered nurse or hold a license and cannot usually administer medication, so the responsibilities are typically fundamental.

Training/Educational Requirements

There is no educational or training requirement for this position. A hospice aide learns from on-the-job training with a registered nurse or a nurse s aide. They learn the proper way to do things such as help a patient out of bed or assist with a bedpan by observing other nurses and by practicing. Oftentimes the family of the patient has a particular way they want things done, so the best training comes from working directly on the job.

The National Association for Home Care and Hospice ( NAHC ) offers certification for personal and home care aides throughout the country. This certification is not mandatory although individuals may opt to gain it to demonstrate they have met established industry standards. It can be a simple certification and lend way to further development within this role. Those individuals wishing to gain their certification must complete a 75-hour course, observe and document work in up to 17 different skills signed off by a registered nurse. In addition, they must successfully pass a final exam. Although this isn t a requirement, it can certainly lend way to more opportunities for advancement.

There are some high school courses that prepare for this role. At the early stages, an individual can do a co-op job to better prepare themselves for becoming a hospice aide. There are some standalone classes an individual can take in patient care which prepares them for the real thing. Individuals interested in a career as a hospice aide receive basic training from the company they work for before they are sent to a patient s home.

When working in a hospice environment, the facility will provide some training not only in how to care for a patient but also in how to make them comfortable as they prepare for death. There are certain personality traits such as patience and compassion that are required for such a role since most patients are elderly, disabled, or dying.

How to Get Hired

Most individuals wishing to get a job as a hospice aide look for employment with a home health care services company. This is usually the best way to get hired because the patients and their families go to such a company to hire this type of individual. It helps to take training classes or work through a high school co-op to prepare for this role. In turn, this also helps to get hired much faster.

For the hospice aide wishing to get hired into a hospice environment, it helps to apply to the facility directly. Usually these facilities are looking for background and experience since patients who come in here require a certain type of personality. It is also helpful to have experience working with a dying patient.

Although there is no specific educational requirement for this position, experience helps to get hired. It is especially true for families who are hiring someone to come to their home and care for their loved one.

Job Prospects, Employment Outlook, and Career Development

There is expected to be a better than average increase in the hiring of hospice aides. This role is expected to grow as families continue to look for individuals to care for their loved ones in a home or hospice environment. Since this is an entry-level position, the requirements for hiring are much lower. Therefore, it appeals to those who may not have a college education. There is a high potential for growth since people oftentimes don t want to work within an entry-level role.

As more hospice centers become a popular environment, the need for hospice aides will increase. So, too, will the need to keep aging or disabled family members in their home rather than sending them to a nursing home. This means there will be an increased need for individuals in this role, and within the home health care services business.

Working Environment

Depending on the type of facility a hospice aide wishes to work within, the environment may be slightly different. If focused within home health care, the individual will often travel to patient s homes. The assignment may last for a short time or may become a regular job. Individuals in this role care for more than one patient in their home or sometimes travel between a variety of different patient s homes. It all depends on the patients, the workload and the hours required. However, if focused within the home health care niche, hospice aides can expect the working environment to be an actual home. If focused within the hospice niche, it is expected to work within such a facility or institution. These facilities strive to create a cozy environment for their patients so they can be comfortable before they die. This work environment is more like an actual medical facility, but feels cozier.

Salary and Benefits

As of 2006, the average earnings for a hospice aide was about $9.34 an hour. The range averaged anywhere from $7.99 all the way up to $13 per hour depending on the facility. In some instances, a home health care company pays slightly higher depending on the environment and patient s needs. The more experience an individual has, the more they can expect to earn per hour.

Since these are hourly positions, most of the time hospice aides work without any true benefits. Any travel expenses incurred are the individuals responsibility and are often not reimbursed. Instead, a flat hourly rate is given to hospice aides. For those working within a hospice environment, they can expect some benefits if they are hired by the facility directly.

All Hospice Caring volunteers who work directly with clients in our Patient and Family, Adult Bereavement, and Children’s Bereavement programs are required to take our Volunteer Training. All training is held at the Hospice Caring Cottage.

Our general volunteer training will be held four times during the year. The dates for 2016 are:

Volunteers are the heart of Hospice Caring. In order to responsibly serve patients and the bereaved, every volunteer who works directly with clients must complete a three-day (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) introductory training session, which is often described by graduates as a transforming experience. The training provides information about the many aspects of the dying process and the various non-medical ways to assist the dying through their end-of-life journey. Through lectures, guided exercises and role playing, staff and professionals present a broad range of information and skill-building instruction to new volunteers that prepares them to be one-on-one caregivers and bereavement facilitators. The training includes topics such as hospice care, death and dying, grief, communication, appreciating diversity, nursing homes, funeral homes, legal documents, Hospice Caring’s caregiving and bereavement programs, and volunteer self-care and responsibilities.

Prerequisites. All potential volunteers (caregivers and group facilitators) who work directly with clients undergo a background check.

Adult Bereavement Facilitator Training

Our Adult Bereavement Facilitator Training prepares volunteers to co-facilitate our peer support groups for adults who are grieving the death of a loved one. Topics covered include grief-related issues, group dynamics, communication skills, and facilitation skills.

Schedule. Training is offered once or twice a year, as needed. Training is held on a Saturday and two weekday evenings.

Prerequisite. 3-day Volunteer Training plus a completed background check

Good Grief Club Facilitator Training

This training prepares volunteers for co-facilitating our 7-week Good Grief Clubs in Montgomery County schools during school hours with a school counselor. Topics covered include children’s ways of grieving, an agenda for each weekly session, a myriad of tools to help children in grades K-12, and information about working within the school system.

Schedule. Training is offered once or twice a year, as needed. Training is held on weekdays.

Prerequisite. 3-day Volunteer Training plus a completed background check

Student feedback about Good Grief Club Facilitator Training

This training prepares volunteers for the 3-day camp for grieving children. It is held on a Saturday, 2 – 3 weeks before the camp weekend. Topics include children’s ways of grieving, behaviors one might expect, and our goals in providing this experience.

Schedule. Training is offered once a year, on a Saturday. Our next training will be May 21, 2016.

Prerequisite. Minimum age of 21 plus a completed background check.

Frequently Asked Questions About Training

1. Are administrative and event volunteers required to take Volunteer Training? Will they still undergo a background check even if they don’t take Volunteer Training?

Administrative and event volunteers are not required to take the three-day Volunteer Training. The Volunteer Training is for “program” volunteers (caregivers and bereavement facilitators).

2. Do any of Hospice Caring’s training programs satisfy professional counseling or medical career field criteria for accreditation or continuing education units (CEUs)? Does Hospice Caring train professional hospice caregivers and bereavement facilitators in the various medical and social services career fields if they reimburse Hospice Caring for the cost of the training?

We have qualified and professional speakers at our training, and we meet the requirements of the State’s “Limited License Hospice” training. We provide ongoing supervision, guidance, support and continuing education for our volunteers. They are invited to attend monthly meetings (caregiver support and bereavement support), a book club, and social gatherings. Volunteers are kept informed through newsletters, e-mails, and mailings. But it would not satisfy educational or professional credits because we are not medical.

3. I have already been trained by another hospice organization to be a volunteer caregiver and bereavement facilitator. Will my training transfer to Hospice Caring as a substitute for the Volunteer Training at Hospice Caring?

No. We are a unique hospice, and our training reflects our particular mission.

Hospice Caring’s training is held at the Cottage in our resource room, the wing of the Cottage dedicated “Joshua’s Place at Hospice Caring: A Resource for Life™.” This peaceful, bright room is equipped with a refrigerator and microwave that students may use. Ample parking is available at the Cottage.

How to Get Your Cat Certified as a Therapy Cat

It shouldn t surprise any cat person that cats make wonderful therapy animals. We all know how soothing and therapeutic a little cat love can be. It s incredible how kitties can shift your mood so quickly, easing anxiety, erasing a bad day, and alleviating sadness. With a bit of training, you and your personal therapy cat might be an asset to others as well. Here s the scoop.

What are therapy cats?

Therapy cats and their handlers are trained to assist mentally, emotionally, or physically ailing humans in relaxation and healing.

Therapy cats are assets in many situations. One group that benefits greatly from a little cat-love therapy is children. Therapy cats have been used to help kids with developmental disorders like autism be more comfortable with the world around them. Therapy cats also pay visits to speech and hearing centers, schools, and hospitals, including children s hospitals.

Therapy cats help tremendously in nursing homes, where patients may welcome some fur time. And, for some patients with Alzheimer s, cats can often prompt pleasant memories.

Even some prisons leverage cat therapy to offer inmates some much-needed comfort and distraction.

What programs train and certify therapy cats?

A variety of organizations train and certify pet therapy teams (that s you and your cat, by the way!). Pet Partners is one of the most well-known national organizations that facilitates and promotes animal-assisted therapy and offers training and registration for therapy animal teams. Love on a Leash is another national organization. Some areas have local organizations, like the Miami Valley Pet Therapy Association in Troy, Ohio.

To find the best option in your neck of the woods, search the Internet or check with your local humane society.

How do you and your cat become certified?

To train as an official cat-therapy team, you need to meet minimum requirements, which vary by the certifying organization. The Pet Partners program, for example, requires that the cat is at least one year old and has lived with you for at least six months. Cats should show no aggression towards people or other animals. Those are obvious requirements. There are less obvious things, like cats who eat a raw protein diet not being eligible to participate. Most programs also require that the cat be able to wear a leash and harness, mostly for the cat s own safety.

You ll likely first fill out a screening questionnaire. Once the organization has established that you and your cat meet the requirements, you ll complete training for either just you (the handler) or you and your cat. When that is finished, you and your cat undergo a live evaluation by a trained expert.

Then you submit all of this information, along with a fee (which varies by organization), to become a certified therapy team. Voila!

What kind of cat makes a good therapy cat?

Obviously, not all cats make good therapy cats. According to Pet Partners, animals who are calm, confident, friendly, and OK with unpredictable or new situations do well as therapy animals.

You can probably make the call about your own cat s future as a therapy kitty. My Romeo would not make a good therapy cat. He s loving and sweet but only on his own terms. Pugsley, on the other hand, would be awesome. He s a love bug. He doesn t mind being picked up by anyone and everyone, and new situations, people, or even other animals don t even phase him. Pugsley once walked right up to two dogs who came into his house, sniffed them both, yawned, and stretched out on the floor for a snooze. My guess is that snuggling with little kids or senior citizens would be right up Pugsley s alley.

    Logistics Management is the part of SCM that efficiently plans, implements, and controls the delivery and storage of goods and services.

    Supply chain management flows can be divided into three main flows:

    1. Product flow – which is the movement of goods from a supplier to a customer, as well as any customer returns or service needs.
    2. Information flow – which involves transmitting orders and updating the status of delivery.
    3. Finances flow – which consists of credit terms, payment schedules, and consignment and title ownership arrangements.

    There are three levels of decisions associated with SCM:

    1. Strategic – Long-term decisions related to location, production, inventory, and transportation.
    2. Tactical – Medium-term decisions such as weekly demand forecasts, distribution and transportation planning, production planning, and materials requirement planning.
    3. Operational – Day-to-Day decisions as part of normal managerial duties.

    The following five steps are typical purchase procedures:

    1. Specify the amount needed.
    1. Determine the supplier based on pricing comparisons.
    1. Negotiate the price as well as payment terms, warranty, and timed cost reductions. Dealing with supplies or commodities depends on their availability, price and quality.

    Focusing on certain areas within the supply chain can reduce costs. There might be times when buying in bulk is cost effective. JIT, FIFO and LIFO will be discussed in the following Inventory Management section of this lesson.

    Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) as part of SCM can help plan and determine the supply needs and timelines for new manufacturing processes in order to predict product delivery schedules, and respond to changes in the market or product. It is a software based production planning and inventory control system used to manage manufacturing processes. The three major objectives of MRP are:

    1. Ensure materials and products are available for production and delivery to customers.
    2. Maintain the lowest possible level of inventory.
    3. Plan manufacturing activities, delivery schedules, and purchasing activities.

    Sophisticated software systems with Web interfaces are competing with Web-based Application Service Providers (ASP) who provide SCM service for companies who rent their service. A number of major Web sites offer e-procurement marketplaces, which is the business-to-business purchase and sale of supplies and services over the Internet. Manufacturers can trade and even make auction bids with suppliers.

    The five basic Supply Chain Management steps are:

    1. Plan Strategic planning by developing a set of metrics to monitor the supply chain so that it is efficient, costs less, and delivers high quality and value to customers.
    1. Source Choose the suppliers that will deliver the goods and services you need to create your product including pricing, delivery and payment. Also managing the inventory of goods and services you receive from suppliers, including receiving shipments, verifying them, transferring them to your manufacturing facilities, and authorizing supplier payments. This is all done while at the same time continuously monitoring the metrics for possible improvement.
    1. Make Manufacture your product. Schedule the activities necessary for production, testing, packaging and preparation for delivery. Always measure quality levels, production output, and worker productivity.
    1. Deliver Also known as logistics. Coordinate the receipt of orders from customers, develop a network of warehouses, pick carriers to get products to customers, and set up an invoicing system to receive payments. Shipping options can include:

    FOB (Free On Board) Factory Pricing where the buyer bears the shipping cost.

    Freight Absorption Pricing in which paying some of the transportation costs are in line with competitors.

    Uniformed Delivery Pricing in which a standard price is set no matter the location.

    Zone Pricing in which you charge different prices for different geographical locations.

    1. Return Also known as RMA or Return Merchandise Authorization. A system for receiving defective and excess products back from customers, and supporting customers who have problems with delivered products.

    Many people think lovebirds are not parrots, but they are! They are an African species (there are nine species of lovebirds) and they have all the tell-tale characteristics, from the hooked bill to the two-toes-forward, two-toes-back.     Although the tech industry has typically been a male-dominated field, there are a number of available jobs particularly appealing to women looking to get in on the ground floor of a developing market.     What can you learn about persuasion from hostage negotiation?

    Chris Voss and I first met four years ago when he was teaching international business negotiations at Harvard University.

    Chris was the FBI s lead international kidnapping negotiator for years and he currently teaches business negotiation in the MBA program at Georgetown University s McDonough School of Business. He s also CEO of the Black Swan Group .

    The full interview was over 30 minutes long so for brevity s sake I m only going to post highlights here.

    What Hostage Negotiators Know That Most Negotiators Get Wrong

    In terms of basics, what do you think people can learn from hostage negotiating that they don t learn in your typical negotiating class?

    business negotiations try to pretend that emotions don t exist. What s your best alternative to a negotiated agreement, or BATNA. That s to try to be completely unemotional and rational, which is a fiction about negotiation. Human beings are incapable of being rational, regardless. There s a lot of scientific evidence now that demonstrates that without emotions you actually can t make a decision, because you make your decisions based on what you care about.

    So hostage negotiators come at negotiation from a very different perspective. They believe that everything is about negotiation, and that you have to understand how to control and influence and impact negotiations from the very beginning. So instead of pretending emotions don t exist in negotiations, hostage negotiators have actually designed an approach that takes emotions fully into account and uses them to influence situations, which is the reality of the way all negotiations go

    What s The Biggest Myth People Believe About Negotiating?

    The great myth out there, and I know why Roger Fisher came up with the idea of BATNA, but the great myth out there is either that you have to have a BATNA. or that you even need to think about your BATNA. The real effect of that is that if you don t have a BATNA that you like, or you don t have a BATNA at all, then you ve just taken yourself hostage and put yourself at the mercy of the person you re dealing with.

    I think that s a great mistake that everybody makes. They re worried about their BATNA, and they spend a lot of time calculating their BATNA, when they should be spending time figuring out how to influence the other side. And how to figure out how to listen to them effectively to find out what will influence them

    What s The Best Technique for Influencing Someone?

    The idea is to really listen to what the other side is saying and feed it back to them. It s kind of a discovery process for both sides. First of all, you re trying to discover what s important to them, and secondly, you re trying to help them hear what they re saying to find out if what they are saying makes sense to them.

    Someone may have a stated goal in a negotiation, but what they re trying to negotiate for isn t going to get them that. You can say, What are we trying to accomplish here? Then, How is what you are asking for going to get you that? If you make them explain it to you, a lot of times both you and them are going to discover whether or not it makes any sense.So you can become a real sounding board in the negotiations to try and figure out whether the solutions match the problems.

    Is Compromise A Good Thing Or The Very Worst Thing?

    A lot of corporate positions are the result of compromise. You ve got a representative of a corporation who s representing a compromised point. Their goal may be a compromise that might not necessarily line up with what they are trying to accomplish. The real problem with compromise is everybody talks about compromise as a good thing, that in good relationships you ve got to compromise. Compromise has come to be known as this great concept. In relationships and politics and everything. Compromise is a good thing.

    It s really one of the worst things in disguise. I was trying to describe this to a woman who is a neighbor of mine just a couple of weeks ago about how much I hate compromise. She said so what you re telling me is like if a husband wants his wife to get breast implants, and she doesn t want to, a compromise would be that she gets one So you re negotiating with a company, they have a compromised position, that s what they want. So you ve got to ask them open-ended questions to get them to see. You ve got to use basic hostage negotiation skills to get them to hear it and sound it out, so that they begin to see that what they want might possibly be ridiculous

    The Two Biggest Mistakes You re Making In Negotiations

    I would put it in a tie with, they neglect to pay attention to emotional factors, and they really neglect to listen. I compare a lot of negotiations to dealing with a schizophrenic, because a schizophrenic s always got a voice in his head talking to him which makes it very hard for him to listen to you.

    Now most people in business negotiations, they approach the negotiation, and they ve got firmly in their mind all of the arguments that support their position. So when they re not talking, they re thinking about their arguments, and when they are talking, they re making their arguments. They view negotiation as a battle of arguments.

    If while you re making your argument, the only time the other side is silent is because they re thinking about their own argument, they ve got a voice in their head that s talking to them. They re not listening to you. When they re making their argument to you, you re thinking about your argument, that s the voice in your head that s talking to you. So it s very much like dealing with a schizophrenic.

    If your first objective in the negotiation, instead of making your argument, is to hear the other side out, that s the only way you can quiet the voice in the other guy s mind. But most people don t do that. They don t walk into a negotiation wanting to hear what the other side has to say. They walk into a negotiation wanting to make an argument. They don t pay attention to emotions and they don t listen.

    Jeudi 29 juin a eu lieu la cinquième Soirée des partenaires de l’école, organisée par le service des Relations industrielles. L’événement a rassemblé environ quatre-vingt personnes, industriels, représentants du secteur économique régional, universitaires et étudiants.

    Une table-ronde, animée par Fabien SOULIÉ, enseignant-chercheur, a abordé le thème de « La fabrication additive dans les applications industrielles, citoyennes, de la recherche et de la formation ».

    Stéphane ABED, président de la société Poly shape, Yann LEFEBVRE, président du FabLab « LabSud », André CHRYSOCHOOS, directeur du centre PRO3D et Christian JORGENSEN, professeur au CHU de Montpellier et directeur de l’unité INSERM “Cellules souches, plasticité cellulaire, médecine régénératrice et immunothérapies”, sont intervenus pour partager leurs expériences et échanger sur les applications de ces technologies.

    Les diverses interventions des invités ont permis de montrer le spectre très large des champs d’applications de ces nouvelles techniques de mise en œuvre de la matière, allant de l’industrie de pointe à la recherche médicale avancée, sans oublier les applications standardsaccessibles à tous ” précise Fabien Soulié.

    Les présentations ont aussi su faire ressortir toutes les étapes de la démarche de conception, de dimensionnement et d’optimisation, préalables à la phase d’impressionproprement dite ” ajoute André Chrysochoos, concluant que “la fabrication additive est apparue aux participants comme une solution complémentaire aux techniques classiques de fabrication, mais possédant ses propres limites “.

    Volunteering in hospice is a choice that creates rewards for patients and families.     Hospice volunteer training can be done conveniently at home or wherever there is access to a computer.

    The hospice volunteer program is designed to help strengthen the understanding of hospice for volunteers and those seeking more information on caring for a loved one with a terminal illness.

    Computer Addiction

    Some people develop bad habits with their computer use that may cause significant problems in their lives. The types of behavior and negative consequences are similar to those of known addictive disorders, so the term computer or Internet addiction has come into use.

    While anyone who uses a computer could be vulnerable, those people who are lonely, shy, easily bored or suffering from another addiction or impulse control disorder are especially vulnerable to computer addiction.

    Computer addiction can result from people using it repeatedly as their main stress reliever instead of having a variety of ways to cope with negative events and feelings. Other misuses may include procrastination from undesirable responsibilities, distraction from being upset and attempts to meet needs for companionship and belonging.

    While discussions are ongoing about whether excessive use of the computer/Internet is an addiction, the potential problematic behaviors and effects on users seem to be clear.

    Signs of Problematic Computer Use

    A person who is addicted to the computer is likely to have several of the experiences and feelings listed below:

    • Mixed feelings of well-being and guilt while at the computer.
    • Unsuccessful efforts to quit or limit computer use.
    • Losing track of time while on the computer.
    • Neglecting friends, family and/or responsibilities in order to be online.
    • Lying about time spent on the computer/activities while online.
    • Feeling anxious, depressed or irritable when computer time is shortened or interrupted.
    • Using the computer repeatedly as an outlet when sad, upset or for sexual gratification.
    • Problems in school/work as a result of time spent and the type of activities accessed on the computer.
    • When not on the computer, frequent thoughts and anticipation of using it again.

    Being addicted to the computer also may cause physical discomfort, including:

    • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (pain, numbness and burning in the hands that can radiate up the wrists, elbows and shoulders).
    • Dry eyes or strained vision.
    • Back and neck aches.
    • Severe headaches.
    • Sleep disturbances.

    • Difficulty getting homework done because computer games occupy a great deal of your time.

    • Focusing on other areas for skill enhancement, such as problem solving, assertiveness, social skills, overcoming shyness and anger control.
    • Assessing for other disorders like depression or anxiety that may need medical treatment.
    • Assist in locating or forming a support group for other students who are trying to regain control over their computer use.

    How to Help a Computer-Obsessed Friend

    • Be a good role model. Manage the computer use in your own life.
    • Introduce them to other people who handle their computer use sensibly.
    • Get them involved in non-computer related fun.
    • Talk to your friend about your concerns.
    • Support their desire for change if they think they have a problem.
    • Encourage them to seek professional counseling.

    What an Electrician Does

    Structures used for residential and commercial purposes all have electrical wiring for lights, climate control, alarm systems, appliances, and whatever else draws current. The electrician is in the middle of construction projects and installs wiring to provide the required power feed based on specifications provided by the building designer. Some of their usual job tasks include:

    You have decided to become a certified nursing assistant in Louisiana and are willing to devote the time and effort required to complete a state-approved CNA class. One of the questions you might have is how long it takes to complete a nurse aide course? Regardless of the type of facility offering a nurse assistant program, the curriculum must include eighty (80) hours of instruction. The classroom and clinical training are divided equally, with forty (40) hours dedicated to classroom teaching and the remaining forty (40) hours spent during clinical practice. All CNA classes and training programs must address the totality of a resident’s needs, including physical, psychosocial, environmental, and medical needs.

    Nursing assistant students are thought about the attitudes and behaviors that result in a positive impact on a resident’s physical and mental condition. Clinical practice focuses on mastering a set of limited nurse aide skills necessary to provide assistance, support, and basic patient care. The majority of CNA training programs in Louisiana are being offered by two-year community colleges.     There are no federal regulations stating that individuals are required to have a high school diploma prior to attending nurse aide classes but some states such as Florida require a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to testing if you are under 18 years old and have not attended a training program. A program coordinator at the school or nursing facility which is offering CNA training classes may tell you if a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required in order to enroll in the nurse aide program. Some facilities do not require a diploma as long as you have completed a 10th grade high school education. In the state of Texas a high school diploma or a GED is not necessary in order to attend and complete a nursing assistant program.

    There is a wide disparity between CNA training requirements among the states. The difference lies in the mandatory number of total training hours necessary to complete state-approved CNA classes .

    While according to federal law each nursing assistant course should contain a minimum of seventy-five (75) instruction and clinical hours, individual states have the liberty to mandate extra training requirements for certified nursing assistants. The majority of states exceed the threshold federal minimum requirements for nurse aide training programs because they are considered insufficient to result in an optimal and safe level of care for clients.

    A review of nationwide state requirements for nurse assistant courses has found that the following states have mandated highest number of CNA program hours: Maine with a minimum of 90 hours of theory, 20 hours of laboratory skills and 70 hours of clinical instruction for a total of 180 hours; California with one hundred and sixty (160) training hours; Delaware and Oregon each requiring one hundred and fifty (150) hours; followed by the state of Alaska with one hundred and forty (140) hours; Virginia, Arizona, and West Virginia have a minimum of one hundred and twenty (120) training hours for state-approved classes.
