    Manufacturing firms know they must be flexible, creative and innovative if they want to survive in today’s fiercely competitive market. But can they do this while hitting productivity targets, which are also a key component of operations? How the dynamic between innovation and quality management, which are often at cross-purposes, influences new product innovation is the focus of a new study co-authored by Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management Zhao Xiande.     Welcome to the official SEVP and SEVIS website. Here you can find the latest information and resources for F (academic) and M (vocational) students, as well as designated school officials (DSOs).

    The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) is a part of the National Security Investigations Division and acts as a bridge for government organizations that have an interest in information on nonimmigrants whose primary reason for coming to the United States is to be students.

    On behalf of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), SEVP manages schools, nonimmigrant students in the F and M visa classifications and their dependents. The Department of State (DoS) manages Exchange Visitor Programs, nonimmigrant exchange visitors in the J visa classification and their dependents. Both SEVP and DoS use the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) to track and monitor schools; exchange visitor programs; and F, M and J nonimmigrants while they visit the United States and participate in the U.S. education system.

    What is SEVP?

    The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) is the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) program that administers the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). It ensures that government agencies have essential data related to nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors to preserve national security. SEVP provides approval and oversight to schools authorized to enroll F and M nonimmigrant students and gives guidance to both schools and students about the requirements for maintaining their status.

    What is SEVIS?

    SEVIS is a web-based system for maintaining information on international nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors in the United States. It is the core technology for the DHS in this critical mission. SEVIS implements Section 641 of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, which requires DHS to collect current information from nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors continually during their course of stay in the United States. In addition, the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001 (USA PATRIOT Act; Public Law 107-56, amended Section 641) mandated implementation of SEVIS prior to Jan. 1, 2003.

    What is the purpose of SEVIS?

    SEVIS tracks and monitors nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors. If accepted by an SEVP-certified school, foreign students may be admitted to the United States with the appropriate F or M nonimmigrant status. If accepted for participation in a Department of State-verified exchange visitor program, exchange visitors may be admitted to the United States with J nonimmigrant status. Records of these nonimmigrant admissions and continued participation in these educational programs are maintained in SEVIS. Further, SEVIS enables SEVP to assure proper reporting and record keeping by schools and exchange visitor programs, thereby ensuring data currency and integrity. SEVIS also provides a mechanism for student and exchange visitor status violators to be identified so that appropriate enforcement is taken (i.e. denial of admission, denial of benefits or removal from the United States).

    The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) provides for the admission of different classes of nonimmigrants who are foreign nationals seeking temporary admission to the United States. The purpose of the nonimmigrant’s intended stay in the United States determines his or her proper nonimmigrant classification. Some classifications permit the nonimmigrant’s spouse and qualifying children to accompany the nonimmigrant to the United States or to join the nonimmigrant here. To qualify, a child must be unmarried and under the age of 21.

    F-1 nonimmigrants, as defined in section 101(a)(15)(F) of the INA, are foreign students coming to the United States to pursue a full course of academic study in SEVP-approved schools. An F-2 nonimmigrant is a foreign national who is the spouse or qualifying child of an F-1 student.

    M-1 nonimmigrants, as defined in section 101(a)(15)(M) of the INA, are foreign nationals pursuing a full course of study at an SEVP-approved vocational or other recognized nonacademic institution (other than in language training programs) in the United States. An M-2 nonimmigrant is a foreign national who is the spouse or qualifying child of an M-1 student.

    Job Description

    A hospice care aide helps individuals unable of helping themselves. These aides travel to the patient s home and help them perform activities required for daily life. Hospice care aides are often associated with the elderly or disabled who are unable to take care of themselves, so they perform all required functions specific to the patient.

    Most of the time, a hospice aide is the first position an individual may take at the beginning of their career. Alternatively, an individual may seek such a career if they are interested in the nursing field, but do not have the required education or training. Most functions performed are rather fundamental in nature, and do not require much training.

    Hospice aides usually work within a hospice environment or travel to the patient s home. They help the individual eat, get up out of bed, or help them with the bathroom or a bedpan. The number of duties involved depends on the nature and the status of the patient, since they are expected to help the patient function as normally as possible. If working within a hospice environment, they work with individual patients to make their final days as comfortable as possible. If working in a home environment, they spend time sitting with or caring for an elderly or disabled patient who requires extra care.

    Many times, families of patients in either a home or hospice environment can t commit to 24 hour care, so they hire a hospice aide to help during the times they are absent. Hospice aides travel to the home and work in shifts providing round the clock supervision and care. They aren t usually a registered nurse or hold a license and cannot usually administer medication, so the responsibilities are typically fundamental.

    Training/Educational Requirements

    There is no educational or training requirement for this position. A hospice aide learns from on-the-job training with a registered nurse or a nurse s aide. They learn the proper way to do things such as help a patient out of bed or assist with a bedpan by observing other nurses and by practicing. Oftentimes the family of the patient has a particular way they want things done, so the best training comes from working directly on the job.

    The National Association for Home Care and Hospice ( NAHC ) offers certification for personal and home care aides throughout the country. This certification is not mandatory although individuals may opt to gain it to demonstrate they have met established industry standards. It can be a simple certification and lend way to further development within this role. Those individuals wishing to gain their certification must complete a 75-hour course, observe and document work in up to 17 different skills signed off by a registered nurse. In addition, they must successfully pass a final exam. Although this isn t a requirement, it can certainly lend way to more opportunities for advancement.

    There are some high school courses that prepare for this role. At the early stages, an individual can do a co-op job to better prepare themselves for becoming a hospice aide. There are some standalone classes an individual can take in patient care which prepares them for the real thing. Individuals interested in a career as a hospice aide receive basic training from the company they work for before they are sent to a patient s home.

    When working in a hospice environment, the facility will provide some training not only in how to care for a patient but also in how to make them comfortable as they prepare for death. There are certain personality traits such as patience and compassion that are required for such a role since most patients are elderly, disabled, or dying.

    How to Get Hired

    Most individuals wishing to get a job as a hospice aide look for employment with a home health care services company. This is usually the best way to get hired because the patients and their families go to such a company to hire this type of individual. It helps to take training classes or work through a high school co-op to prepare for this role. In turn, this also helps to get hired much faster.

    For the hospice aide wishing to get hired into a hospice environment, it helps to apply to the facility directly. Usually these facilities are looking for background and experience since patients who come in here require a certain type of personality. It is also helpful to have experience working with a dying patient.

    Although there is no specific educational requirement for this position, experience helps to get hired. It is especially true for families who are hiring someone to come to their home and care for their loved one.

    Job Prospects, Employment Outlook, and Career Development

    There is expected to be a better than average increase in the hiring of hospice aides. This role is expected to grow as families continue to look for individuals to care for their loved ones in a home or hospice environment. Since this is an entry-level position, the requirements for hiring are much lower. Therefore, it appeals to those who may not have a college education. There is a high potential for growth since people oftentimes don t want to work within an entry-level role.

    As more hospice centers become a popular environment, the need for hospice aides will increase. So, too, will the need to keep aging or disabled family members in their home rather than sending them to a nursing home. This means there will be an increased need for individuals in this role, and within the home health care services business.

    Working Environment

    Depending on the type of facility a hospice aide wishes to work within, the environment may be slightly different. If focused within home health care, the individual will often travel to patient s homes. The assignment may last for a short time or may become a regular job. Individuals in this role care for more than one patient in their home or sometimes travel between a variety of different patient s homes. It all depends on the patients, the workload and the hours required. However, if focused within the home health care niche, hospice aides can expect the working environment to be an actual home. If focused within the hospice niche, it is expected to work within such a facility or institution. These facilities strive to create a cozy environment for their patients so they can be comfortable before they die. This work environment is more like an actual medical facility, but feels cozier.

    Salary and Benefits

    As of 2006, the average earnings for a hospice aide was about $9.34 an hour. The range averaged anywhere from $7.99 all the way up to $13 per hour depending on the facility. In some instances, a home health care company pays slightly higher depending on the environment and patient s needs. The more experience an individual has, the more they can expect to earn per hour.

    Since these are hourly positions, most of the time hospice aides work without any true benefits. Any travel expenses incurred are the individuals responsibility and are often not reimbursed. Instead, a flat hourly rate is given to hospice aides. For those working within a hospice environment, they can expect some benefits if they are hired by the facility directly.

    BAKERSFIELD, CA – Optimal Hospice is looking for volunteers. Whether it’s a skill or just time, organizers say everyone has something to offer.

    Assistant volunteer coordinator Karen Budnick says volunteers play an important role in hospice.

    Budnick said, They’re able to give family members a break so that they can step away and some times it’s just so they can go to the grocery store or go to a doctor’s appointment.

    Thursday morning, new volunteers learned more about their role.

    It’s end of life, which I think that a lot of us are not comfortable with the end of life, but when you realize that it’s living life to the fullest and helping somebody do that, it really captures your heart, said Budnick.

    Volunteer Tim Brewer said, There’s a whole lot of satisfaction in just giving, period.

    Brewer is part of the veteran to veteran program, providing support to patients and family members who served in the military.

    We would love to have more veteran volunteers, pet therapy, really any type of volunteers. We have volunteers that cut hair, massage, visit, listen to wonderful stories, said Budnick.

    Your first step toward a career in Aviation Maintenance Science is obtaining your FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A P) Certification.
    Global’s hands-on approach trains students in the specific skills employers seek in the airframe powerplant mechanics and aircraft inspection fields. Students take courses in simulated work environments from instructors with real-world experience.
    Our curriculum was developed by educators and industry representatives to ensure that course offerings accurately reflect current industry standards. Students must complete the required course to qualify for the program’s Certificate of Achievement. Once trained, technicians will also be successful in related fields of aircraft manufacturing, electronics, hydraulics, pneumatics, welding, sheet metal, quality control, civil and military defense.
    F.A.A. Eligibility Requirements
    The A P mechanics course is for applicants who meet FAR 65.71-65.77 only. Under these regulations, you must have a certain type of mechanical experience before the F.A.A. will allow you to take the F.A.A. written exams. The required experience for the powerplant mechanic rating is a minimum of 18 months working with tools on any type of aircraft engine. The required experience for the airframe mechanic rating is a minimum of 18 months working with tools on any type of airframe. If you want both ratings, and your experience was a combination of airframe and powerplant, then you need a total of 30 months experience (not 36).
    Obtaining Your Authorization Slips
    To be enrolled in GLOBAL SCHOOL OF AERONAUTICS as a mechanic student, you must first meet the F.A.A. experience requirements. The purpose of this is to be sure the F.A.A. will permit you to take the written exam after you finish the course.
    Oral and Practical Examinations
    The F.A.A. requires the written results to be in the student’s hands before an Oral and Practical examination may be given. Therefore, in order to take an oral and practical examination with one of our examiners, you must bring your written score slips and your airmen certificate and/or rating application 8610-2. Your F.A.A. inspector should give you two copies of the 8610-2 form, both bearing original signatures. Photo copied signatures are not accepted.
    Classroom Time
    The average time to obtain the A P rating is from 11 – 13 days. Our instructors work closely with each student, progressing him/her based on their own capabilities. Our course is guaranteed 100% – we keep working with you until you pass – good for 36 months.

    Voicemail 101: Simple Steps That May Save You Hours

    First and foremost, read the book that came with your voicemail system. Over the course of a year, you may waste a few hours repeating whole messages if you don’t know the simple commands for forwarding and rewinding calls. What? You’ve lost the book, or they never gave you one? No excuse: www.google.com. Search for your phone model, and you will probably find the manual. No time to read it? Bring it with you to meetings, on airplanes, the grocery store – find a minute here or there to pick up a new tip.

    1. Identify your name, organization, and telephone number in your outgoing message.

    “Hi, this is Karen Smith with Adcomine at 212-555-1234.”

    1. State that you are not available and any other important information.

    “I’m out of the office today,January 3rd, 2006. I will be returningJanuary 5th, 2006. I will not check voicemail until I am back. If this is an emergency or you need immediate assistance, please call Bill Withers at 917-555-6543.”

    1. Tell people how to leave an appropriate message. That’s right, if you want good information, ask for it.

    “Please leave a brief message stating how I can help you, along with your phone number, and I will call you back.”

    1. If you prefer email, offer that as an option to callers. If you have an unusual name or company name, spell out the email address.

    “You may want to email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ”

    1. To cut down on repeat calls if you work in a high-volume call area, state that you will return calls within 24 hours or whatever time period your organization’s policy on return calls requires.
    2. If you update your message when you go out of town, don’t forget to update it again when you get back.
    3. If your system allows callers to bypass your message by hitting the pound key, tell them that, especially if you have an unusually long message.

    When to Check and How to Check Voicemail.

    The number of times you check voicemail each day will vary depending on your job function and industry. However, if you have not told people differently, at a minimum you should check messages once a day and return those calls. Here are some other helpful tips for checking voicemail.

    1. Have a pen and paper ready when you begin dialing – duh. (This is Voicemail 101).
    2. Listen to all of the messages before you start returning calls.
    3. Remember that you don’t have to return them in the order they were received.
    4. Sometimes it’s easier to return calls when you are pretty sure the recipients won’t pick up the telephone. You can answer their questions on their voicemail and move on with your day.
    5. If you are super busy and have the luxury of an assistant or some other kind soul, ask this person to return some of your phone calls. This is especially good if it is going to take an unusually long time for you to get back with someone.
    6. Don’t save messages you really don’t need. If you wrote down the information from the call, most of the time there is no reason to save the original recording. After all, do you really want your box so full no one can leave a message? That’s embarrassing and unprofessional. Imagine that you are charging clients big bucks, and they can’t leave messages because you can’t get your act together well enough to leave them adequate recording room. Pitiful.

    Leaving Effective Voicemails

    When leaving messages, have mercy on your listeners and do the following:

    1. Speak slowly and leave your phone number at the beginning and the end of the message.
    2. Limit your comments to one or two subjects. Voicemail is not a one-person show.
    3. If you are rambling, for the sake of others and your reputation, stop yourself and rerecord.
    4. If you need action of some sort, state what you need. Voicemails that simply say, “call me” are irritating at best.
    5. If the recipient of your messages tends to fall into the trap listed in the previous point, tell him or her, “When you return my call, please leave a message on my voicemail to let me know the status of the project if I’m not able to pick up the phone.”
    6. If you are using a group distribution list that lists everyone’s name on the message, read the manual for your phone system and put the list at the end. If people want to listen to it they can.

    Sample of a Perfect Voicemail

    “Hi, this is Karen Smith with Adcomine at 212-555-1234. I’m calling to let you know that we have received your package and will have a response to you by Friday. If you have any questions, please call me. Again, Karen Smith with Adcomine at 212-555-1234.”

    There you have it: Voicemail 101 in a nutshell. A little careful planning and attention can free your time and help you view voicemail as the useful tool that it is rather than the torture it can be.

    The US population is becoming increasingly diverse. About 25 million Americans have Limited English Proficiency. Eleven million are nonliterate in English. An estimated 93 million Americans have Basic or Below Basic Health Literacy. As medicine becomes more complex and specialized by the minute, the communication gulf between doctors and their patients is becoming progressively insurmountable. In order for us to provide quality care for all Americans, we need to become skilled in providing culturally effective care. The Stanford Cross Cultural Medicine Microlecture Series is a series of very short talks ( 2 minutes each typically), which aims to highlight key issues in cross-cultural encounters.

    We are the first to acknowledge how complex and challenging this topic is. Thus we seek to share our experiences and sights gained from clinical practice and research about this important issue, more as a starting point rather than as a “gold standard”. The series was created after in-depth discussions with over 40 multi-lingual medical interpreters. Our hope is that trainees and health personnel everywhere will use our microlecture series as a tool to pause and reflect about their own practice.

    The ability to show the impact of care begins with an accurate assessment at the beginning of the episode. According to the Medicare Conditions of Participation (CoP 484.55), A registered nurse must conduct an initial assessment visit to determine the immediate care and support needs of the patient; and, for Medicare patients, to determine eligibility for the Medicare home health benefit, including homebound status. In cases that include nursing and therapy services, the registered nurse is required to complete the admission visit regardless of patient diagnosis or staffing availability. CoP 484.55 goes on to add, When rehabilitation therapy service (speech language pathology, physical therapy, or occupational therapy) is the only service ordered by the physician, and if the need for that service establishes program eligibility, the initial assessment visit may be made by the appropriate rehabilitation skilled professional.

    When our patients are admitted to an inpatient facility and we complete a transfer OASIS, we normally will choose not to discharge the patients and await their return home, resuming care at that time. We have a question about what happens if a patient dies while hospitalized and now needs to be discharged from home health. When we enter our discharge reason for home health, is it that the patient was transferred to an inpatient facility, or is the discharge reason that the patient expired?

    Federal and state regulators as well as private payers are working hard to curb the costs of Medicare and Medicaid programs. Although the vast majority of hospice providers are operation within the law, regulators have identified some bad actors. For example, a recent Office of Inspector General (OIG) study of hospice care in ALFs raised concerns about the possibility of hospices focusing on certain types of patients under the current payment system. The OI study concluded that hospices have financial incentives to serve patients in ALFs because these patients tend to have diagnoses associated with longer stays (such as ill-defined conditions, mental disorders, or Alzheimer s disease) that often require less complex care and result in higher payments per patient for the provider.

    What Kind of Training or Education Is Required?

    A hospice nurse must initially be a licensed practical or vocational nurse (LPN/LVN) or a registered nurse (RN). According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the first step is to complete a nursing program that’s been approved by the state and may be offered through a technical, vocational or community college. Here, you’ll learn to provide nursing care such as taking a patient’s vital signs, assisting with mobility and hygiene, and in some cases, starting intravenous lines. You’ll also need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) to earn your required state license.

    If you would like to provide hospice care as a registered nurse, you can pursue an LPN-to-RN program or enter an RN program directly, usually through either an Associate Degree in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. An accelerated BSN program may be an option if you already have a degree in another field.     Virginia Western Community College – Celebrating 50 Years

    Beginnings.

    Per legislation, effective July 1, 1966, Roanoke Technical Institute (RTI) of Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and the Roanoke Center of the School of General Studies of the University of Virginia merged and became Community College of Roanoke. That summer, under the leadership of President Dr. Travis McKenzie, programs and faculty combined and began fall quarter classes with an enrollment of 1,352 students.

    During the first year of operating, the college was renamed Virginia Western Community College. In 1968, the first true class of Virginia Western students graduated.

    Growth and Expansion

    By 1970, new coursework in nursing, data processing, commercial art and traffic/transportation management were created in addition to existing engineering, business and liberal arts curricula. Student enrollment continued to increase and temporary classrooms were moved to campus. Still new in concept, campus was bustling with activity and students brought in events to form community and shape the school’s identity such as crowning a Miss Virginia Western, dances, and campus art shows outside.

    Increasing Access and Preparing for the Future

    Virginia Western Community College continued to expand access of its services and options for its students and the development of the community in terms of physical growth, workforce support, transfer to four-year colleges and the launch of a program further removing financial barriers to obtaining a college education.

    Similar to a half-century ago, another call-to-action was asked in the 2010s. Fifty years ago a knowledge gap was identified as the United States raced to compete as a technologically advanced nation. This time it is to close the skills gap. In this decade, Governor Terry McAuliffe identified a gap in high-demand jobs skills and called for a significant increase in workforce credentials to be awarded in Virginia in STEM-H (science, technology, electronics, math and healthcare).

    A Mobile Crisis Mental Health Response Team is available day or night to respond to psychiatric emergencies within the community. Patients who are admitted through our emergency care center and require a stay in the hospital are referred to our dedicated psychiatric inpatient unit.

    Emergency Social Work Services are provided around the clock for patients and family members admitted through our Center for Emergency Care at UCMC. Our care team provides comprehensive counseling and crisis intervention services.

    Stroke Diagnosis and Treatment is provided by our experienced emergency medicine physicians, many of whom are members of the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Stroke Team.     The Decontamination Room at UCMC is designed for patients who have been involved in chemical spills, or who have highly infectious diseases.     Coming to Scranton for Fall 2017!

    Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology Program is designed to be completed over a two-year period with day, evening, and Saturday courses as well as on- and off-campus clinical hours. Each program also includes summer session courses and clinical lab hours.

    Acceptance into Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology Program is based on a selective admissions process with a maximum of 15 students selected annually.

    Degree information

    Through a balance of classroom instruction and clinical experience, the student will acquire applied skills and knowledge in the field of Surgical Technology.

    Surgical technologists work in the operating room under the direct supervision of a surgeon and a registered nurse. Surgical technologists help facilitate the draping, and prepping of the surgical patient. They gown, and glove other team members. They get all the instruments, supplies, equipment necessary for specific surgical procedures. As a member of the sterile team, surgical technologists will hand all necessary instruments and supplies to the surgeon and other team members.

    A surgical technologist has a broad knowledge of anatomy and physiology, microbiology, sterile techniques, and patient safety concepts as well as ethical and legal concepts. A surgical technologist must have an understanding of the hospital organization, policies, and procedures.

    Job opportunities and salaries in the healthcare specialty of surgical technology have been rising steadily over the last few years, and the U.S. Department of Labor predicts employment of surgical technologists is projected to grow 30% from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations. Advances in medical technology have made surgery safer, and more operations are being done to treat a variety of illnesses and injuries. The median annual wage for surgical technologists was $41,790 in May 2012.

    Most surgical technologists are employed by hospitals, day-surgery centers with the remainder working in the offices of physicians. After two years of experience, a certified surgical technologist may apply to become a traveling surgical technologist.

    Lackawanna College’s Surgical Technology program combines classroom instruction with practical clinical externships at local hospitals. Both career-specific and academic core courses are included. Students successfully completing the program are eligible to sit for the National Certifying Exam (CST).

    Surgical Technology Program classes are given days, nights and on weekends (based on the availability of the instructors). Clinical externships, however, must take place during the daytime.

    Objectives

    • To give students an understanding the need for surgical intervention
    • To develop an understanding of the role of surgical technologist as a member of the surgical team
    • To instruct students in the responsibilities which the performance of this role entails
    • To assist students in developing the knowledge of the organizational structure of the hospitals, its departments and the operating room
    • To develop a basic understanding of biological science as it relates to safe operating room procedure
    • To facilitate the hands-on, supervised experience in the operating room performing the duties of a surgical technologist.

    Admissions criteria and requirements

    Prospective students must meet the college’s minimum requirements. Applicants must submit proof of high school or GED completion with official high school transcript or GED equivalent. Lackawanna College will determine the applicant’s current academic ability based on a combination of following:

    • SAT or ACT test scores, if applicable
      • Recommended SAT scores: 470 Verbal and 470 Math.
      • Recommended ACT scores: 20 or higher in each relevant section.
      • Most scores are valid up to 3 years from test date.
    • College Transfer Credits
      • If transferring credits from another college/university, official college transcripts are required.
    • Placement Test
      • Applicants without valid SAT/ACT scores and who have not previously earned college credits will be required to take the ACCUPLACER exam for determination of current academic ability. Applicants must achieve College Ready scores in Reading, Writing, and Math to be considered qualified for the Surgical Technology program.

    Due to the very specific nature of these degree programs, applicants with transfer credits may only transfer credits related to program core courses including the following:

    • Anatomy and Physiology I – 4 credits
    • Anatomy and Physiology II – 4 credits with lab (if taken within two years)

    • Introduction to Psychology

    Interviews will be scheduled for qualified Surgical Technology program applicants who submit a fully completed application. A mandatory informational meeting will be required prior to start of the selected program.Qualified students will be notified of the date and time upon selection into program. The meeting will review the Surgical Technology department’s policies and expectations. The meeting will also allow for question and answer session and tour of the Lackawanna College facilities.

    Curriculum

    Changes in the curriculum for this program have been approved by ARC/STSA and will be in effect for students beginning their studies in the Fall 2017 cohort.

    This degree program is moving to our Scranton campus in Fall 2017.

    This is the second article in a series that shows how to create user defined function blocks using Modicon Concept v2.6 programing software. This article will show how to create an integrator function block.

    Many basic control system component blocks contain an integrator function. Some examples are PID, Lead-Lag and filter blocks. An integrator function has an output that is the time integral of the input signal.

    A PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) is used for the control of industrial machines and process installations. The PLC was designed specially for this purpose and offers the possibility of a flexible configuration by means of hardware and software to be adapted to the machine or process which needs to be controlled. Analog signals such as pressure and temperature from the process are evaluated by the PLC and based on these signals the process is controlled by the PLC. Analog signals need to be connected to the PLC and configured. Because of the modular design and configuration of the PLC many things can go wrong. This article gives some guidelines.

    This article will show how to create user defined function blocks. The first block, a summing junction, was chosen to be simple in nature to illustrate the steps in creation without unnecessary complication. Future articles will not be as in depth with creation mechanics and spend more effort on the functionality. The culmination of these series of articles will be a functional turbine speed control. The programming package for this series is Modicon Concept v2.6s.

    When I ask myself what the Academy has meant to me, the first thing that comes to mind is: It caused me to reconsider if I have truly been called to chaplaincy.     BAKERSFIELD, CA – Optimal Hospice is looking for volunteers. Whether it’s a skill or just time, organizers say everyone has something to offer.

    Assistant volunteer coordinator Karen Budnick says volunteers play an important role in hospice.

    Budnick said, They’re able to give family members a break so that they can step away and some times it’s just so they can go to the grocery store or go to a doctor’s appointment.

    Thursday morning, new volunteers learned more about their role.

    It’s end of life, which I think that a lot of us are not comfortable with the end of life, but when you realize that it’s living life to the fullest and helping somebody do that, it really captures your heart, said Budnick.

    Volunteer Tim Brewer said, There’s a whole lot of satisfaction in just giving, period.

    Brewer is part of the veteran to veteran program, providing support to patients and family members who served in the military.

    We would love to have more veteran volunteers, pet therapy, really any type of volunteers. We have volunteers that cut hair, massage, visit, listen to wonderful stories, said Budnick.

    No matter what your specialty, the compassion is welcome.

    The US population is becoming increasingly diverse. About 25 million Americans have Limited English Proficiency. Eleven million are nonliterate in English. An estimated 93 million Americans have Basic or Below Basic Health Literacy. As medicine becomes more complex and specialized by the minute, the communication gulf between doctors and their patients is becoming progressively insurmountable. In order for us to provide quality care for all Americans, we need to become skilled in providing culturally effective care. The Stanford Cross Cultural Medicine Microlecture Series is a series of very short talks ( 2 minutes each typically), which aims to highlight key issues in cross-cultural encounters.

    We are the first to acknowledge how complex and challenging this topic is. Thus we seek to share our experiences and sights gained from clinical practice and research about this important issue, more as a starting point rather than as a “gold standard”. The series was created after in-depth discussions with over 40 multi-lingual medical interpreters. Our hope is that trainees and health personnel everywhere will use our microlecture series as a tool to pause and reflect about their own practice.

    Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Training

    A fellowship is the period of subspecialty training that a physician may undertake after completing a residency. Like many other subspecialties, fellowship training is mandatory in hospice and palliative medicine through American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) certification .

    In February 2014, ACGME and AOA announced that the accrediting organization is moving to a single accreditation system for graduate medical education. This transition period is in effect until June 30, 2020 as AOA-accredited programs apply for and receive ACGME recognition and accreditation. This switch to a single accreditation system allows graduates from both allopathic and osteopathic medical schools to complete their residency and fellowship training in ACGME-accredited programs and demonstrate achievement of common milestones and competencies.

    Hospice Nursing Training Programs

    Hospice nurses provide end-of-life care. Find out what type of nursing degree you’ll need, and learn what additional training and professional certifications are important in this field. Schools offering Adult Health Nursing degrees can also be found in these popular choices.

    What Kind of Training or Education Is Required?

    A hospice nurse must initially be a licensed practical or vocational nurse (LPN/LVN) or a registered nurse (RN). According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the first step is to complete a nursing program that’s been approved by the state and may be offered through a technical, vocational or community college. Here, you’ll learn to provide nursing care such as taking a patient’s vital signs, assisting with mobility and hygiene, and in some cases, starting intravenous lines. You’ll also need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) to earn your required state license.

    If you would like to provide hospice care as a registered nurse, you can pursue an LPN-to-RN program or enter an RN program directly, usually through either an Associate Degree in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. An accelerated BSN program may be an option if you already have a degree in another field. Advanced nursing education options include a Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization in palliative care, which also prepares you for a nursing career in hospice and palliative care. All states require that registered nurses pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) in order to practice.

    Nursing programs, regardless of the level, typically require that you take basic classes such as anatomy, physiology and nursing care principles plus clinical rotations providing patient care under supervision. RN programs and higher may also include biology, psychology and theoretical classes. Some graduate-level programs may allow you to take classes online, but clinical components that have to be carried out in-person are still usually required.

    What Would I Do With This Training?

    Hospice and palliative care nurses provide emotional, physical and spiritual care to patients who may be suffering from life-threatening illnesses or conditions. Hospice nurses also interact closely with other medical professionals as well as with the families of the patient and may be called upon to offer support during the patient’s transition from life. This area of practice requires that you are compassionate, emotionally stable and able to work as part of a team.

    Do I Need To Become Certified?

    Hospice certification is voluntary and might not be required by employers. It is offered by the Hospice and Palliative Credentialing Center (HPCC). You must have a minimum number of years’ experience providing hospice and palliative care to patients, and you must also pass an exam. The certifications are valid for four years before recertification is required.

    Optimal Hospice volunteer training

    BAKERSFIELD, CA – Optimal Hospice is looking for volunteers. Whether it’s a skill or just time, organizers say everyone has something to offer.

    Assistant volunteer coordinator Karen Budnick says volunteers play an important role in hospice.

    Budnick said, They’re able to give family members a break so that they can step away and some times it’s just so they can go to the grocery store or go to a doctor’s appointment.

    Thursday morning, new volunteers learned more about their role.

    It’s end of life, which I think that a lot of us are not comfortable with the end of life, but when you realize that it’s living life to the fullest and helping somebody do that, it really captures your heart, said Budnick.

    Volunteer Tim Brewer said, There’s a whole lot of satisfaction in just giving, period.

    Brewer is part of the veteran to veteran program, providing support to patients and family members who served in the military.

    We would love to have more veteran volunteers, pet therapy, really any type of volunteers. We have volunteers that cut hair, massage, visit, listen to wonderful stories, said Budnick.

    Certified Home Health Aide Training Programs and Requirements

    Home health aides care for patients in private residences by providing basic medical and personal services. Certificate programs allow home health aides to gain the necessary state-regulated training for employment in the field.

    Essential Information

    Home health aides are responsible for administering medication, performing personal care tasks and general housekeeping and maintenance tasks for patients. Home health agencies require home health aides to pass state-regulated training programs before working with patients. Home health aides can meet these requirements by enrolling in home health aide courses or programs offered by local vocational or nursing schools. Training programs vary by state and employer, but most require aides to reach a minimum number of training hours in the classroom and in hands-on care, in addition to passing a competency exam. Additionally, home health aides can seek voluntary certification to demonstrate proficiency in home health care.

    Home Health Aide Certificate Program

    Certification from the National Association for Home Care and Hospice

With voluntary certification from the NAHC, home health aides may find increased career prospects and hourly wages.

    Certification as a Certified Nurse Assistant

    A home health aide can also seek certification as a certified nurse assistant (CNA). To become a CNA, an aide must complete 75 hours of state-regulated training and pass a comprehensive home health exam. Because the duties, training and skills required of CNAs are similar to those of home health aides, many employers hire CNAs as home health aides.

    Continuing Education

    The NAHC holds conferences, symposiums, workshops and expositions each year. Most conferences are two to four days long and provide home health aides and other personal care workers with invaluable networking opportunities. Conferences are usually held in large cities, though information from conferences and symposiums is available on NAHC’s website. Home health and hospice conferences discuss home health practices, trends in patient care and leadership strategies for supervisory home health aides.

    Home health care seminars or practicum opportunities lasting 1-4 hours may be available from community or technical colleges that offer home health aide certificate programs. Seminars usually discuss a broad scope of home health care practices, including the housekeeping, maintenance and organizational skills needed to succeed as a home health aide.
