IBM, a Pioneer of Remote Work, Calls Workers Back to the Office

IBM, a Pioneer of Remote Work, Calls Workers Back to the Office

The 105-year-old technology giant is quietly dismantling its popular decades-old remote work program to bring employees back into offices, a move it says will improve collaboration and accelerate the pace of work.

The changes comes as IBM copes with 20 straight quarters of falling revenue and rising shareholder ire over Chief Executive Ginni Rometty’s pay package.

The company won’t say how many of its 380,000 employees are affected by the policy change, which so far has been rolled out to its Watson division, software development, digital marketing, and design — divisions that employ tens of thousands of workers.

The shift is particularly surprising since the Armonk, N.Y. company has been among the business world’s staunchest boosters of remote work, both for itself and its customers. IBM markets software and services for what it calls the anytime, anywhere workforce, and its researchers have published numerous studies on the merits of remote work.

In the past, IBM has boasted that more than 40% of employees worked outside traditional company offices, and a May 4 post on the company’s Smarter Workforce blog stated that telework works.

IBM may be part of a broader rethink of remote work under way at large companies, as corporate leaders argue that putting workers in the same physical space hastens the speed of work and sparks innovation. Employers tread a fine line, however, since workers rate flexible-work programs highly, and research has found telecommuters often work more effectively than their cubicle-bound counterparts.

Yahoo Inc.’s decision to call telecommuters back to the office in 2013 set off a furor among employees and workplace experts. Yet more recent decisions at Bank of America Corp. and Aetna Inc. to greatly reduce telecommuting have elicited little outrage.

Big Blue’s leaders want employees to work differently now, said Laurie Friedman, a company spokeswoman. The company has rebuilt design and digital marketing teams to quickly respond to real-time data and customer feedback, collaborations that happen more easily when teams work shoulder-to-shoulder, Ms. Friedman said, adding that the vast majority of IBM’s telecommuters have chosen to join their teams in person.

Workers in affected IBM divisions have been given 30 days to decide whether to move to company-maintained office space that can be hundreds of miles away from their homes.

For example, marketing employees were invited to move to offices in Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, New York or San Francisco, or leave the company. Those unwilling to move were also given 90 days to seek another role within IBM.

The changes have stunned longtime IBMers like marketing manager Ron Favali. The 15-year company veteran has spent the last 12 years working from an office in his home outside Tampa, Fla. and considered himself a remote-work success story.

His team uses IBM’s Sametime instant-messaging voice and video chat software to stay connected and on task, despite being scattered in three states. Working remotely came with career trade-offs, he said. I was never going to be named vice president of marketing for anything, but I’m okay with that.

He has declined IBM’s offer to return to a company workspace, and will leave the company next month to start a marketing firm out of his home.

Companies began offering generous remote work policies because they expected large savings in office and real-estate costs, said Jennifer Glass, a University of Texas professor who studies telecommuting and advises companies on remote-work strategies. Those savings haven’t materialized, Ms. Glass said, so workers are being called back to the office.

Relocating offices or asking employees to move can sometimes be read as layoffs in disguise, since a certain percentage of workers won’t be able to relocate.

IBM says its co-location plan isn’t a cost-saving measure. Ms. Friedman noted that the employees who cannot join an in-person team can apply for one of more than 5,000 open jobs in the U.S.

Working from the master bedroom in her Ogden Dunes, Ind. home, Penny Schlyer helped market IBM mobile software and services for companies reliant on workers who aren’t bound to a desk, such as retail employees, financial advisers or doctors.

Her seven years telecommuting with IBM could have been plucked from one of her marketing campaigns: she has logged work hours from the sidelines of her sons’ sporting events and used Sametime to communicate with her colleagues.

She was dismayed when IBM requested the 48-year-old mother of three move to the company’s New York City office. The irony is definitely not lost there, she said.

Though IBM offered to pay for the move and make a small cost-of-living adjustment to her salary, Ms. Schlyer declined. I could never afford to live in New York City, and probably not anywhere close.

She has found a new job leading product marketing for SA Ignite, a Chicago-based software company, but her office won’t change: she is still in the master bedroom.

Lab Environment Setup

  • There is no need for a physical lab space.
  • All the lab activities can be carried out on students’ computers .
  • We provide VM images, and all the labs have been tested in the images.
  • All software used in the lab environment is open-source and free .

Virtual Machine Software (VirtualBox)

Install the free VirtualBox. Our pre-built VM images can be used by both VMWare and VirtualBox. Here are some instructions for VirtualBox:

  • How to run our pre-built VM image with VirtualBox .
  • Network Configuration in VirtualBox for SEED labs (“NAT Network”). This is a newly added network type in VirtualBox (since version 4.3 in 2014); it basically combines the NAT adapter and Host-only adapter into one adapter called “NAT Network”. We will be using this adapter for all our SEED labs, instead of the previous “NAT + Host-only” option. You need to make sure that your VirtualBox is updated to the most recent version.
  • Loading Multiple VMs into VirtualBox: Problems and Solutions .

Pre-built Virtual Machine Images (Ubuntu)

Currently, we have three images (Ubuntu9.11, Ubuntu11.04, and Ubuntu12.04). Most labs can be conducted in any of these images. Some labs depend on a particular image, and in that case, the dependence will be clearly stated in the lab’s web site. If you do not see such a statement, assume no dependence. All the labs that work in Ubuntu 11.04 also work in Ubuntu12.04, so there is no need to use Ubuntu11.04 any more. We have already stopped supporting Ubuntu11.04.

  • ( New ) This is a revised Ubuntu 12.04 image (revised in Jaunary 2016). In this image, we added the support for several of the newly developed labs.
    • Download the image from the following server (the MD5 checksum of the file is 6ec9c429a2f4a9163530ada20f0621dc):
      • Main server
      • Backup server
    • User Manual. includes the account and password information, list of software and servers installed, and configuration.
    • VM Customization. Some labs require multiple VMs; to help you easily identify which VMs you are in, you can do some simple customization. You need to download this file ( ) as well
  • This image, built in September 2013, is based on Ubuntu 12.04. This VM officially replaces SEEDUbuntu11.04. All the labs that work in SEEUbuntu11.04 also work in this new VM.
    • Download the image from one of the following servers (the MD5 checksum of the file is 50a3ba75ddd49b6647c2411d68edceea):
      • Server at Syracuse University .
    • User Manual. includes the account and password information, list of software and servers installed, and configuration.
    • Unzip the image, and follow our VirtualBox instruction to run it in VirtualBox.
  • (replaced by SEEDUbuntu12.04). This image, built in August 2011, is based on Ubuntu 11.04.
    • Not available any more
    • User Manual. includes the account and password information, list of software and servers installed, and configuration.
  • SEEDUbuntu9_August_2010.tar.gz. This image, built in August 2010, is based on Ubuntu 9.11.
    • Not available any more
    • User Manual. includes the account and password information, list of software and servers installed, and configuration.

For Minix-based labs

Some of the SEED labs (not many) are based on the Minix operating system. You should get the Minix 3 VM image from its official web site.

  • How to Copy Files To and From a VMware Server Virtual Machine

How to Copy Files To and From a VMware Server Virtual Machine Guest

Files may be copied to and from the guest operating system running inside a VMware virtual machine using the vmrun command line tool.

Note that in order to perform these tasks, VMware Tools must be installed on the guest operating system. For details on installing VMware Tools refer to the Understanding and Installing VMware Tools chapter of the Virtuatopia VMware Server 2.0 Essentials online book.

    Finding the vmrun Tool

The vmrun tool is installed on the host system as part of the VMware Server and VMware Workstation virtualization products. Assuming a standard installation where the software is placed in the default location, the vmrun executable is located in \Program Files\VMware\VMware Server on Windows hosts and in the /usr/bin directory on Linux hosts.

    Understanding vmrun Command Line Syntax

The basic command line syntax for using vmrun varies slightly between VMware products, but can generally be summarized as follows:

vmrun host authentication flags guest authentication flags command parameters

The host authentication flags are required to provide host, login and password information for the host system. These are essentially the same credentials that would be used when accessing the VI Web Access management interface. These flags are required only on VMware Server hosts, and are not needed for VMware Workstation:

The corresponding password for the guest user specified using the -gu flag.

The command argument identifies to vmrun the task to be performed on the specified virtual machine. For example, start. stop and reset are all valid commands. Other commands are available to perform tasks within a guest operating system, such as runProgramInGuest and deleteFileInGuest.

The parameters arguments specify optional information required for a specific command. If, for example, the stop command is specified, the parameters argument is used to reference the .vmx file of the virtual machine which is to be powered off. In the case of running guest commands, both the .vmx file of the target virtual machine and the path to the program to be executed must be provided as parameters.

When specifying the virtual machine on which a command is to be executed, the location of the virtual machine .vmx configuration file must be provided. For VMware Workstation, this involves specifying the full path of the file. For example:

In the case of VMware Server 2.0, which introduced the concept of datastores. the name of the datastore in which the virtual machines resides must be provided together with the path of the corresponding .vmx file within that datastore. For example, to reference a virtual machine stored in the win2008 sub-directory of the Vol1 datastore, the vmrun path parameter would be defined as follows (note that the datastore name is enclosed in square brackets and separated from the sub-directory by a space character):

Copying Files to a Virtual Machine Guest

A file may be copied to the guest operating system running in a VMware virtual machine using the copyFileFromHostToGuest command. For example:

Copying Files from a Virtual Machine Guest

A file may be copied from the guest operating system running in a VMware virtual machine using the copyFileFromGuestToHost command. For example:

Checking if a File Exists in a Virtual Machine Guest

Before attempting to copy a file to or from a gust operating system, it may first be useful to check whether the file exists on the guest filesystems. This can quickly be achieved with vmrun and the fileExistsInGuest command. For example:

    Installing Ubuntu inside Windows using VirtualBox #virtual #server #tutorial, #installing #ubuntu #inside

Installing Ubuntu inside Windows using VirtualBox

The screenshots in this tutorial use Ubuntu 12.04, but the same principles apply also to Ubuntu 12.10, 11.10, 10.04, and any future version of Ubuntu. Actually, you can install pretty much any Linux distribution this way.

VirtualBox allows you to run an entire operating system inside another operating system. Please be aware that you should have a minimum of 512 MB of RAM. 1 GB of RAM or more is recommended.

    Comparison to Dual-Boot
Many websites (including the one you’re reading) have tutorials on setting up dual-boots between Windows and Ubuntu. A dual-boot allows you, at boot time, to decide which operating system you want to use. Installing Ubuntu on a virtual machine inside of Windows has a lot advantages over a dual-boot (but also a few disadvantages).

    Advantages of virtual installation

    • The size of the installation doesn’t have to be predetermined. It can be a dynamically resized virtual hard drive.
    • You do not need to reboot in order to switch between Ubuntu and Windows.
    • The virtual machine will use your Windows internet connection, so you don’t have to worry about Ubuntu not detecting your wireless card, if you have one.
    • The virtual machine will set up its own video configuration, so you don’t have to worry about installing proprietary graphics drivers to get a reasonable screen resolution.
    • You always have Windows to fall back on in case there are any problems. All you have to do is press the right Control key instead of rebooting your entire computer.
    • For troubleshooting purposes, you can easily take screenshots of any part of Ubuntu (including the boot menu or the login screen).
    • It’s low commitment. If you later decide you don’t like Ubuntu, all you have to do is delete the virtual hard drive and uninstall VirtualBox.

    Disadvantages of virtual installation

    • In order to get any kind of decent performance, you need at least 512 MB of RAM, because you are running an entire operating system (Ubuntu) inside another entire operating system (Windows). The more memory, the better. I would recommend at least 1 GB of RAM.
    • Even though the low commitment factor can seem like an advantage at first, if you later decide you want to switch to Ubuntu and ditch Windows completely, you cannot simply delete your Windows partition. You would have to find some way to migrate out your settings from the virtual machine and then install Ubuntu over Windows outside the virtual machine.
    • Every time you want to use Ubuntu, you have to wait for two boot times (the time it takes to boot Windows, and then the time it takes to boot Ubuntu within Windows).

    Installation Process
The first thing you have to do is obtain VirtualBox. Visit the VirtualBox website’s download page. Install it the same way you would any normal Windows program.

Follow these instructions to get a Ubuntu disk image (.iso file).

After you launch VirtualBox from the Windows Start menu, click on New to create a new virtual machine. When the New Virtual Machine Wizard appears, click Next.

You can call the machine whatever you want. If you’re installing Ubuntu, it makes sense to call it Ubuntu. I guess. You should also specify that the operating system is Linux.

VirtualBox will try to guess how much of your memory (or RAM) to allocate for the virtual machine. If you have 1 GB or less of RAM, I would advise you stick with the recommendation. If, however, you have over 1 GB, about a quarter your RAM or less should be fine. For example, if you have 2 GB of RAM, 512 MB is fine to allocate. If you have 4 GB of RAM, 1 GB is fine to allocate. If you have no idea what RAM is or how much of it you have, just go with the default.

If this is your first time using VirtualBox (which it probably is if you need a tutorial on how to use it), then you do want to Create new hard disk and then click Next.

Theoretically, a dynamically expanding virtual hard drive is best, because it’ll take up only what you actually use. I have come upon weird situations, though, when installing new software in a virtualized Ubuntu, in which the virtual hard drive just fills up instead of expanding. So I would actually recommend picking a Fixed-size storage.

Ubuntu’s default installation is less than 3 GB. If you plan on adding software or downloading large files in your virtualized Ubuntu, you should tack on some buffer.

Click Create and wait for the virtual hard drive to be created. This is actually just a very large file that lives inside of your Windows installation.

The next thing to do to make the (currently blank) virtual hard drive useful is to add the downloaded Ubuntu disk image (the .iso) boot on your virtual machine. Click on Settings and Storage. Then, under CD/DVD Device. next to Empty. you’ll see a little folder icon. Click that.

Then double-click your virtual machine to start it up.

You may get a bunch of random warnings/instructions about how to operate the guest operating system within VirtualBox. Read those, and then you may also want to mark not to see those again.

Once it’s started up, just follow the regular installation procedure as if you were installing Ubuntu on a real hard drive (instead of a virtual one).

Afterwards, in order to use your virtualized installation (instead of continually booting the live CD), double-check that the CD/DVD Device entry is Empty again.

If you have suggestions or corrections for these tutorials, please post in this Ubuntu Forums thread or leave a comment on my blog.

I will not give help to people posting in the above places. If you require technical support, start a support thread on the Ubuntu Forums. That is the appropriate place to ask for help.

In 2016, The Virtual Hospice will host a series of four Senior Resident Medical Officers (SRMO) as they rotate through Palliative Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Paediatrics attachments at The Maitland Hospital. The SRMOs are trainees in general practice for GP SYNERGY (formerly Valley-to-Coast General Practice) which provides the Australian General Practice Training programme. The trainees will use these rotations to shore up their knowledge in sub-specialty areas. The Virtual Hospice is pleased and excited to welcome Dr Lori Benton, our very first SRMO. Quality Guided Tours from strength to strength

In 2015 our attendance figures were 15–20+ people each month, who braved the isolation of grief to interact with others in the same boat. The success of these gatherings depends on a number of things: the kindnesses and generosity of the Maitland community in opening their doors to host the tours; the wonderful patronage of the Friends of Palliative Care who provide each attendee with coffee and cake as a marker of hospitality and care; the marvellous Virtual Hospice Tour Leader, Suzanne Teyhan and our Virtual Hospice Guide, Suzie Knesevic; and the warmth of the bereaved, who, despite their own situation, extend a hand of friendship and welcome to others more unsure than themselves.

In 2016 there are walking and talking tours planned, trips to local businesses and local community service groups, and a few surprises in store. We would welcome photos or stories from the participants, so keep in touch!

Throughout 2015, The Virtual Hospice was honoured to have hosted 3 wonderful final year Medical students from the University of Newcastle as part of their Special Study Option in Year 5. Each student completes an experiential learning programme known as Reconnaissance, tailored for every day of the week.

Jordan Cox was our first student at the beginning of the year, and managed to survive the four week attachment despite floodwaters and road closures! It’s always hard being the first person through a course: there are wrinkles to be ironed out, but Jordan handled it all with ease. Her final contribution was a poem, written in ballad form, which illustrated her ability to ‘see’ the person beneath the patient mask. Jordan is now working in the Emergency Department of Maitland Hospital: an excellent advocate for palliative care.

Dave Townsend came along after Jordan and laid us in the aisles with his expertise in social media. Throughout his attachment, we put Dave to work with his skills: he made our presence known in social media as the End-of-Life Professionals (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and Tumblr); was our guest speaker at a number of education sessions; and provided a wonderful Roll of Honour at the Remembrance Service. His time spent in Virtual Hospice will be helpful for his future career as a general practitioner. Right now he is working hard as an orthopaedic JMO in The Maitland Hospital.

Amy Ferguson was our third student in Reconnaissance. Amy used her artistic skills to enhance not only her learning experience in end-of-life care but to produce a series of beautiful artworks depicting her feelings about a number of patient encounters experienced in her attachment. Her ‘major work’ shows a woman in blue with painted fingernails, reclining amongst her symptoms. Breathtakingly beautiful. At last count, Amy was travelling the world before starting her internship on the Central Coast.

Medical students enhance the lives of their patients as well as the health-care professionals who work alongside them. We are grateful to the University of Newcastle for allowing us the opportunity to not only teach and mentor these people, but to learn from them as well. Our next student SSO Reconnaissance experience takes place at the end of February 2016.

Our latest medical student, Michelle Poon has written a piece of poetry, called CLOUDLESS. reflecting her Reconnaissance experience. It can be read here .

    The Pet Connection

The importance of our precious pets

Every day the palliative care team meets and greets a variety of pets. The whole team appreciates the value of pets in the lives of our patients and families. The pets are considered part of the families that we visit. These animals are often intuitive and will demonstrate their concern if something is wrong or the patient is sick. The pets are always supportive and of great comfort to both the patient and the families. They provide unconditional love. They connect the patient, families, and carers, and even let the staff become a part of their life. It’s amazing how a pet can even be an ice-breaker when we first see someone in their home. Pets are a great distraction and bring positive change to the lives of the palliative care patients and their families and carers.

With the permission of their owners, we would like to show you some of the most important members of a palliative care support team. Keep an eye on the right-hand side of our home page as we add new pets.

Virtual Reality (VR) in Healthcare in the U.S. (Markets for Surgery, Visualization, Rehabilitation and Training)

What are virtual reality technologies and how are they being used in healthcare today? What areas of healthcare are seeing the most use of these products? What is the expected market opportunity for companies entering the market for VR equipment? Who are the main players in the VR market and what moves are they making to grow market share? These are among the questions answered in Kalorama Information’s Virtual Reality in Healthcare in the U.S.

The use of virtual reality (VR) technologies in the U.S. healthcare industry has expanded tremendously due to extensive product development and the growing implementation of healthcare information technology (HIT) infrastructure. Virtual reality applications in the healthcare industry are associated with many leading areas of medical technology innovation including robot-assisted surgery, augmented reality (AR) surgery, computer-assisted surgery (CAS), image-guided surgery (IGS), surgical navigation, multi-modality image fusion, medical imaging 3D/4D reconstruction, pre-operative surgical planning, virtual colonoscopy, virtual surgical simulation, virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET), and VR physical rehabilitation and motor skills training. The clinical and enterprise benefits of healthcare VR technology are numerous and include improved patient outcomes, reduced medical errors, improved minimally-invasive surgical (MIS) technique, improved physician collaboration in diagnosis, and improved psychological and motor rehabilitation.

    • Education and Training. including virtual surgical simulators and other simulators for medical patient procedures
    • Rehabilitation and Therapy. including immersive VR systems for pain management, behavioral therapy, psychological therapy, physical rehabilitation, and motor skills training

For each application area (market segment), the report details: current market size, past market sizes (2006-), growth factors and trends, and forecasts to 2015.

Additionally, this report contains a review of relevant U.S. regulation, market drivers, and market inhibitors as well as case studies for each application area and over twenty detailed company profiles for healthcare VR product manufacturers and developers. The information in Virtual Reality in U.S. Healthcare, 2nd ed. Is based on data from multiple industry associations, U.S. governmental healthcare data, Securities and Exchange Commission filings, medical journals, and trade journals.

Johnny Chung Lee – Projects, virtual whiteboard software.#Virtual #whiteboard #software

Johnny Chung Lee > Projects > Wii

As of June 2008, Nintendo has sold nearly 30 million Wii game consoles. This significantly exceeds the number of Tablet PCs in use today according to even the most generous estimates of Tablet PC sales. This makes the Wii Remote one of the most common computer input devices in the world. It also happens to be one of the most sophisticated. It contains a 1024×768 infrared camera with built-in hardware blob tracking of up to 4 points at 100Hz. This significantly out performs any PC “webcam” available today. It also contains a +/-3g 8-bit 3-axis accelerometer also operating at 100Hz and an expandsion port for even more capability. These projects are an effort to explore and demonstrate applications that the millions of Wii Remotes in world readily support.

Tracking Your Fingers with the Wiimote

Using an LED array and some reflective tape, you can use the infrared camera in the Wii remote to track objects, like your fingers, in 2D space. This lets you interact with your computer simply by waving your hands in the air similar to the interaction seen in the movie “Minority Report”. The Wiimote can track upto 4 points simultaneously. The multipoint grid software is a custom C# DirectX program.

To run the grid program you see in the video:

    1. First, follow this walkthrough on using the wiimote with C#. You may need to download a copy of Visual C# Express to compile/run this sample if you don’t have it yet.

    2. Download a copy of the DirectX SDK. You may not need this to simply run the sample grid program, but you will need it if you want to make any changes to it.

    3. Download the Wiimote Multipoint Grid sample program. Make sure your wiimote is connected via bluetooth, and then run the “.exe” shortcut in the main folder.

Low-Cost Multi-point Interactive Whiteboards Using the Wiimote

Since the Wiimote can track sources of infrared (IR) light, you can track pens that have an IR led in the tip. By pointing a wiimote at a projection screen or LCD display, you can create very low-cost interactive whiteboards or tablet displays. Since the Wiimote can track upto 4 points, up to 4 pens can be used. It also works great with rear-projected displays.

The calibration and mouse cursor emulation software is available for you to download and try yourself. Note: My mouse emulation code isn’t perfect. If any of you are programmers and can get it working with Alias Sketchbook, drop me a line.

    1. Connect your wiimote to your PC via Bluetooth. There are a number of tutorials online on how to do this, possibly even for you specific software/hardware configuration. The Wiimote works with many (but not all) Bluetooth drivers. You can report/read about compatibility issues at

    2. Download the Wiimote Whiteboard software to the right. Please read the “READ ME.txt” file first! Make sure your wiimote is connected via Bluetooth, and then run the “.exe” in the main folder. NOTE: Good placement of the wiimote is key to good tracking. View the README for more info.

You can do a quick webserach or try the version created by uweschmidt which is a fairly mature Java-based version for Mac.

    Physics simulation software: Phun

Handwritting recognition: Windows Tablet PC Edition – works great if you have it, not a stand alone program to install.

Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the Wii Remote

Using the infrared camera in the Wii remote and a head mounted sensor bar (two IR LEDs), you can accurately track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. This effectively transforms your display into a portal to a virtual environment. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space.

To run the DesktopVR program you see in the video:

    1. Connect your wiimote to your PC via Bluetooth. If you don’t know how to do this, you can follow this tutorial. I’ve been told it works with other Bluetooth drivers, but I have not tested them myself.

What is hosted virtual desktop (HVD)? Definition from #virtual #desktop #infrastructure

    hosted virtual desktop (HVD)

A hosted virtual desktop (HVD) is a user interface that connects to applications and data that are stored on a cloud provider’s servers rather than on the user’s computer or the corporate network. An HVD is sometimes referred to as a cloud-hosted virtual desktop.

Each desktop instance exists as a virtual machine (VM ) on the service provider’s servers. To the end users, the experience should be indistinguishable from one in which all their data and applications are local.

The HVD delivery model, also known as desktop as a service (DaaS ) offers a lot of benefits to the enterprise. The service provider is responsible for storage. backup. security and upgrades. Service providers generally offer redundancy, high availability, optimized power, and sometimes other features such as remote replication for data protection. The model also benefits a mobile workforce because employees can access their desktops from anywhere with an Internet connection.

Drawbacks to the HVD model include issues with visibility and control, as well as difficulty prioritizing DaaS traffic over the public Internet to ensure performance.

DaaS service providers include Desktone, Rackspace and TuCloud.

Clients Love the Convenience, Speed, and Accuracy of
    Internet Proofreading from

    Internet Proofreading Is Convenient

In this “I need it yesterday” world, you’re sure to agree with my clients that Internet proofreading is a blessing. The convenience of being able to simply email a message or attachment and have it returned to you polished and ready to impress is an absolute necessity. With Internet proofreading, all your copyediting can be handled quickly and professionally.

“In the advertising/copywriting business, I always hear from customers who are in a hurry for copyediting. It’s such a blessing to know that is available to help me out in a pinch. The convenience factor of being able to email or fax a project to Cathy and have it returned in just a short while is a real lifesaver!”

    Internet Proofreading Is Fast

I constantly hear my clients’ kind words about quick turnaround. Internet proofreading, in and of itself, speeds up the process. And I always strive to meet your deadlines even if you have a rush job.

“Cathy Kessler has proven time and again to be a valuable asset in enhancing the effectiveness of many of my different types of written communications. I know that when I send something to Cathy for copyediting, not only will it be returned to me in a prompt manner, but also the document will be grammatically correct. Cathy’s helpful insights in the area of business proofreading have enabled me to clearly state what I want the reader to know, while doing it in a very straightforward, professional manner. I would highly recommend Cathy to anyone who understands the value of the well-edited written word.”

    Internet Proofreading Is Accurate

Most of my clients rave about the accuracy of Internet proofreading. Because the copyediting is done in digital format, the results are more reliable than marking the changes on paper and then having to make adjustments on your document later. If you’d like to see the changes I’ve made while copyediting, just ask, and I’ll gladly mark them for you.

“It’s really hard to find your own mistakes, especially when you know how text/copy should read. I always run all my projects past Cathy’s meticulous eyes before releasing a project to press or production. On more than one occasion, she has found typos or grammatical errors that would have cost me money and aggravation to reprint, not to mention client dissatisfaction as a result, I’ve never had to reprint a project. I would highly recommend Cathy’s copyediting and proofreading services to anyone who writes or uses text/copy of any kind. She’s the best!!”

How to Set Up a Mobile and Virtual Office

    Опубликовано: 26 сент. 2013 г.

Imagine the day when printers, desks, staplers, whiteboards, and even office walls don’t exist. Wouldn’t that be great?

Well we’re almost there thankfully. Today, a laptop, or smartphone and an Internet connection are all we need.

Everything else can be done online. That’s what I’m working on with my quest for virtual freedom.

I write extensively about this in The Suitcase Entrepreneur book, especially in Chapter 7 where I did my research to bring you the most valuable resources and online tools to run your business from anywhere.

When you set up a physical office, you probably ask yourself questions likes:

Do we need to get a landline?
How many phones should we install?

What is virtual storage area network (VSAN)? Definition from #virtual #data #storage

    virtual storage area network (VSAN)

A virtual storage area network (VSAN) is a logical partition in a storage area network (SAN ). VSANs allow traffic to be isolated within specific portions of a storage area network.

Letters from the Editor: 2016 State of Storage

Rich Castagna – the VP of Editorial, Storage – shares his candid, expert, and often very funny view on today’s storage market. In these six “Letters from the Editor,” originally featured in our monthly Storage magazine, Rich covers topics such as flash, data storage, SDS, storage hardware, data protection, convergence, and more.

By submitting your personal information, you agree that TechTarget and its partners may contact you regarding relevant content, products and special offers.

You also agree that your personal information may be transferred and processed in the United States, and that you have read and agree to the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy .

The use of multiple VSANs can make a system easier to configure and scale out. Subscribers can be added or relocated without the need for changing the physical layout. If a problem occurs in one VSAN, that problem can be handled with a minimum of disruption to the rest of the network. Because the independence of VSANs minimizes the total system’s vulnerability, security is improved. VSANs also offer the possibility of data redundancy, minimizing the risk of catastrophic data loss.

The term is most often associated with Cisco Systems and is often mentioned in conjunction with the zoning. Zoning splits a SAN into multiple, isolated subnetworks. The concept behind a VSAN is often compared to that of a virtual local area network (VLAN ). VLANs segregate broadcasts from other networks

    Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization Download #microsoft #enterprise #desktop #virtualization, #download #microsoft #enterprise

Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V) enhances deployment and management of Virtual PC images on a Windows Desktop, while also providing a seamless user experience of a Virtual PC environment, independent of the local desktop configuration and operating system (OS).

MED-V leverages Microsoft Virtual PC to provide an enterprise solution for desktop virtualization. With MED-V, you can easily create, deliver and manage corporate Virtual PC images on any Windows desktop.

Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization is an integral component of the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (aka MDOP), a dynamic solution available to Software Assurance customers, which will help reduce application deployment costs, enables delivery of applications as services, and helps to better manage and control enterprise desktop environments.

Enable legacy applications and accelerate upgrades to new operating systems

Incompatibility of legacy applications with the new version of Microsoft Windows can often delay enterprise upgrades to the latest version of Windows. Testing and migrating applications can take a while, and users are unable to take advantage of the new capabilities and enhancements offered by the new OS.

By delivering applications in a Virtual PC that runs a previous version of the OS (e.g. Windows XP or Windows 2000), MED-V removes the barriers to OS upgrades, and allows administrators to complete testing and to deal with incompatible applications after the upgrade.

From the user’s perspective, these applications are accessible from the standard desktop Start menu and appear side-by-side with native applications so there is minimal change to the user experience.

    Known Issues:

File downloads do not follow web redirection rules.

If the LAN adapter is disabled when a Workspace configured in bridge mode is started, and the adapter is later enabled, the network will not resume. Restarting the Workspace solves this issue.

Workspace image download may be delayed if Windows update is running when it is started.

When the user is required to change his domain password in order to login to Windows inside the Workspace, the client receives a notification about using the wrong username/password, rather than a notification that he should change his domain password.

When expanding a DOS application (e.g. cmd.exe) window to full screen, the application window disappears.

When the domain password is changed while the Workspace is running, and the Workspace is restarted, a wrong password notification appears on the client and the user is required to re-enter the new password.

When installing MED-V using the command line, it is configured by default to launch after installation. This causes problems when installing MED-V in the system context. In this case it is required to use the START_MEDV=0 parameter.

When working in full desktop mode, manual location changes of icons on the desktop are not saved between Workspace sessions.

Multiple versions of the same Workspace created on the same machine are always assigned the same unique name. This may cause problems when multiple virtual machines with the same name attempt to join the domain.

When transferring very large files using the file transfer tool, the transfer may fail.

    Enabling UEFI on Virtual Machines #uefi, #virtual #machine, #uefi #support, #vms, #server

    Enabling UEFI on Virtual Machines

UEFI support may be becoming more and more popular, but it can still be problematic to enable on VMs. Discover how to implement UEFI on several leading VM platforms.

Due to Microsoft’s requirement of Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) instead of BIOS firmware for computers certified for Windows 8 and later, UEFI is now supported in nearly all new computers. Although UEFI isn’t supported by all operating systems, it is becoming more and more popular.

Today we’ll discuss UEFI support of the popular virtual machine (VM) platforms and how to enable UEFI for your virtual machines. However, keep in mind that you can’t switch a virtual machine with an installed operating system from BIOS firmware to UEFI. That will cause the operating system to fail to boot. You need to enable UEFI and then install an operating system with UEFI.

Just like with modern computers, you can temporarily switch back to BIOS firmware for instance, to load a live bootable operating system that doesn’t support UEFI. Let’s take a closer look at how to enable UEFI on specific VM platforms.

    VMware Player and Workstation

The virtual machine products offered by VMware support UEFI, but BIOS firmware is enabled by default. Furthermore, the VMware products do not provide an option in the GUI for enabling UEFI.

UEFI support must be enabled by manually editing the .VMX file or by using a third-party tool like VM Tweaker .

To manually edit the .VMX file, simply open with a text editor and add the following line and then save:

That’s it now that particular VM should run with UEFI.

VirtualBox by default uses the BIOS firmware for virtual machines. It supports EFI too, but unfortunately does not support booting UEFI-based system volumes, which includes Windows 8 in UEFI mode. However, if you’d still like to test or use EFI with other operating systems, enabling EFI support is easy. Open the VM settings, select System. and on the Motherboard tab, select Enable EFI (special OSes only) .

    Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 R2

Among the many new and changed features of Hyper-V in Windows Server 2012 R2, Microsoft introduced UEFI support. Virtual machines can be created with Generation 1 support, which uses BIOS firmware, or Generation 2, which enables UEFI and Secure Boot.

After a virtual machine is created you cannot change its specified Generation, but you can optionally disable the Secure Boot support, which may actually be required to run Linux operating systems.

There aren’t really any special settings to enable UEFI support in Hyper-V. When creating virtual machines you’re asked which Generation you’d like to enable you must choose Generation 2 for UEFI and Secure Boot support.

Virtual machines created with Generation 2 also bring other new functionality, such as PXE boot via a standard network adapter or booting from a SCSI virtual hard disk or virtual DVD. Generation 1 implements the virtual machine like previous versions of Hyper-V and is still useful for when using legacy devices and operating systems.

    VDI: Thin Clients or PCs? #vdi, #thin #clients, #thick #clients, #pc, #virtual

VDI at the Desktop: Thin Clients or PCs for Better TCO?

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), a platform that uses various virtualization technology aspects to implement a rich IT platform through a central, virtualized back end that hosts virtual machines (VMs).

VDI architectures include everything from server virtualization to storage, application virtualization, connections, protocols and more. One of the last aspects of VDI typically considered is the desktop and its user.

VDI requires upfront costs, so by the time IT gets to the desktop side; further upfront costs need to be minimized. Keeping existing PCs appears to be “cheaper” then switching to thin clients for VDI. Is that really the case? Do thin clients or PCs for VDI have a better total cost of ownership (TCO)?

Comparing Desktop Hardware – Components, Factors, and Cost

A PC also known as a thick client, is comprised of a lot of components compared to a thin client. With each PC you have (at minimum) a hard drive, media ports, OS, applications and anti-virus software. Then a thin client only has the thin client OS and a small about of applications if required.

PCs typically have a 4 year expected life where thin clients have a 6 year expected life. The media ports and hard drive open up the possibilities for a security breach. At the same time the user then can install their software which also increases security risks. PCs are typically un-managed desktop devices limiting the security capabilities for the desktop user. Thin clients are locked down devices eliminated the users’ ability to download unless permitted and all devices can be managed through a thin client management console such as Echo .

When looking at hardware cost it’s simple. Thin Clients are cheaper then PCs. PCs typically start pricing at around $599. With thin clients, the cost per unit really depends on the unit each user requires. Someone whose daily tasks entail the use of simple applications such as outlook and they can use a device such as the Ceptor that will come in around $99. Where as a user that runs multiple applications continuously may require a more advanced device that supports high performance visuals such as the Veriton N2110G and comes in under $300.

Exploring the Cost per User for VDI

In most VDI deployments, organizations transition from PCs to thin clients over time. While every organization is different, we have typically seen around 1/3 of VDI users move to thin client devices and the other 2/3s utilize software options such as VDI Blaster. This software converts PCs that are towards the end of their life spans to make them (functionally) into thin clients.

Then there are software licensing costs that are always tough to estimate. Vendors have many different programs and license types and many customers are able to negotiate their own special pricing. However on average we see this cost is roughly $150 per user. But for Microsoft licensing, customers only need to purchase VDA licenses for the percentage of their devices that are thin clients or not covered under Microsoft SA licensing as they start replacing their PCs over time.

*The initial cost analysis that follows is based on 1/3 of the devices as thin clients and the other 2/3 as repurposed PCs.

    Hardware Cost

    Ulteo Opensource Virtual Desktop

Ulteo is an open source program that does the same thing as Citrx. Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop v2.0 provides an open architecture to deliver securely any Linux and Windows applications to any device of the enterprise through the web browser, from anywhere. Integration in a Microsoft environment is fully supported. This is a pretty cool program and I use it to make a standard desktop interface that I can access from several different machines and have all of the data, and changes I have done on other computers. I have set this program up and I like it, I don t have the need to do large scale production environments with Ulteo. However it is cool to set up you virtual desktop and be able to log on to it to make changes to work or other projects and have the ability to access it in the same format from any computer on the internet. I am not sure of any kind of security problems that may exist but I would recommend checking it out.

Ulteo OVD allows Linux applications to be run on a Windows machine through a web browser along with Windows apps. The Linux applications are simply installed on the Linux server and you can publish it for use on the virtual desktop. The Windows applications require a Windows terminal server. I set it up and got everything working great, however you run into the licensing that is required for terminal connections so I didn t do any thing past the eval period. According to their web site future versions will not require a terminal server. You just install the Ulteo agent and register the Windows server with the session manager portion of the Ulteo software and publish the applications to the applications manager.
