    Wagga Wagga Travel Course

    Exploring Wagga Wagga

The anchor at the crossroads of Australia’s inland Riverina region, Wagga Wagga is a fun and funky arts town equidistant from Melbourne or Sydney. Its location along the banks of the lazy Murrumbidgee River provides both a tranquil atmosphere and a relaxing recreational site. The striking landscape, unusual architecture, and wealth of engaging shops makes Wagga Wagga a worthy travel destination in its own right.

It’s a breeze to reach this popular little New South Wales city by air, train, coach, or car. The Wagga Wagga Botanical Gardens is home to the city’s zoo and the Willans Hill Miniature Railway, while the downtown core offers cultural venues like the Rail Heritage Museum and the Museum of the Riverina. A great selection of restaurants, bars, and art galleries ensures plenty of entertainment to go with the outdoor summer fun at Wagga Beach, Lake Albert, or the Wollundry Track.

    Sights nearby

Since Wagga Wagga lies at the crossroads of New South Wales, it’s easy to drive to Melbourne, Canberra, or Sydney from the town. State and national parks form a boundary along the entire eastern and southern flank of Wagga Wagga, making it an ideal base of operations for both urban and natural daytrips.

    – Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve

One of the closest preserves to Wagga Wagga is Tidbinbilla, to the east. Outstanding bushwalking of all levels, wildlife viewing, picnic spots, and kid-friendly fun at the Discovery Playground ensure a fun day out for everyone. Take a ranger-guided tour or a scenic cruise through the park for a more intimate experience. Namadgi National Park borders the nature reserve for even more adventure.

These twin towns straddling the Murray River are an ideal day drive for anyone interested in Victorian-era architecture or the wineries of Australia. They lie just south of Wagga Wagga and offer a diverse range of activities, if you have a car. The wineries of Rutherglen and the mountain town of Bright are right on the doorstep to complement the gourmet eateries, shops, and bars of Albury and Wodonga.

    – Wagga Wagga Botanic Gardens

The star natural attraction in Wagga Wagga is its gorgeous botanic gardens. Located on 20 acres along the rolling Willans Hill Reserve, these gardens are an ideal spot for walks through the camellia gardens or to take in a performance at the music bowl. This park is also home to the city’s small but charming zoo and the popular Willans Hill Model Railway. Check out the native birdlife in the walk-through aviary. The Comfort Inn Prince of Wales is just one of the pleasant hotels near the gardens.

Eating and drinking and shopping nearby

One of the highlights of Wagga Wagga is its charming downtown district and the variety of restaurants, bars, and shops on hand. The town’s central location as a hub of the region has prompted a gourmet scene to evolve around the area’s wineries and farms. Local markets pop up every Saturday and Sunday around town and the lakes, offering shoppers a chance to sample the products of local artisans. A solid array of accommodation is available, both in town at well-reviewed hotels like the Mercure and on the outskirts of town at the park-like Quality Inn Carriage House.

    Public transport

Most travellers know Wagga Wagga as the crossroads for travel between Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra. It’s extremely convenient to drive here from any other town in New South Wales if you have a car, which is something you will want to have to get around the town itself since local transport only consist of taxis and a public bus service. With such a range of things to see and do around Wagga Wagga, most travellers without their own transport opt to rent a car to get the most out of their visit here.
