The St David s Hotel Spa

Location

In the regenerated Cardiff Bay area, St David’s Hotel Spa is a 10-minute taxi ride from Cardiff Central station, and a 20-minute walk from the city centre. It is next to the shops, bars and attractions of the Cardiff Bay area, including the Doctor Who Experience and the Welsh Assembly building. However, the great views across Cardiff Bay from balconies (not a feature of all rooms) are rather spoiled by traffic noise from the nearby A4232.

Style character

An enormous white and glass building, St David’s has an impressive uninterrupted ground floor to roof atrium. Although the view from each floor’s corridor is not, therefore, for those with vertigo, this design allows for a pleasant feel of light and space. On the other hand, the large panes of glass and clean white walls occasionally mean that the design slips into “office” territory. Indeed, the property has to tread a fine line between business and leisure hotel, accommodating both types of customer, as well as many wedding parties. Although it mostly succeeds, the very prominent “business suite” made things feel slightly corporate. The Marine spa has excellent facilities in the shape of a swimming pool, sauna, hydrotherapy spa pool, gym, and ESPA treatments. The waiting area has a good range of teas, coffees and juices, magazines, and a collection of books including Charles Dickens and Rudyard Kipling. The floor to ceiling windows allow for lovely views over the bay, complete, perhaps, with bobbing swans. A nice touch is the private lift for spa access, so guests can get ready in their rooms and then go straight to the spa without traipsing through the main hotel reception.

Service facilities

Staff were friendly and efficient – perhaps overly so at breakfast, when plates were whipped away before I had finished my last bite of food. This may make guests feel as if staff members want to “clean up around them”. But they were also knowledgeable: I took a recommendation about boarding a water taxi from the Bay to the city centre and found it a pleasant way to get to Cardiff’s main park and castle. Staff in the hotel spa were obviously well-trained, and the therapist who gave me a back massage was attentive to the pressure she applied.

Rooms

My deluxe twin room was well equipped, with all the accoutrements of a business hotel, including shoe horns, Molton Brown toiletries and a flat screen television. However, the room lacked the character one might expect from a property that also markets itself to leisure travellers, who could want more than service- lead accommodation. The bland pale wood fittings and generic leather chair meant the room did not have “stay factor”, and the scuffed furniture felt less than five-star. There was also audible noise from other rooms during the night. My room did not have a mini bar, although 24-hour room service is available.

The Prince Princess of Wales Hospice

’The Feeling of Home’

Strangely familiar yet surprisingly new:

NORD’s response to the brief for The Prince Princess of Wales Hospice is to turn to the familiar image of ‘the home’ for clues as to how we might consider an appropriate but inspiring piece of architecture for the Hospice.

This new purpose built hospice is placed within a site at the edge of Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park set against a backdrop of historically significant traditional villas and Arts and Crafts cottages. This privileged placement realises a building with civic and public presence whose form mediates between the city it serves and its parkland landscape setting.

Architecture often forgets that one of its primary goals is to trigger an emotion. This may be comfort, protection or memories. The building carries a weight of seriousness due to the circumstances of the people who arrive. However, a balance of dealing with these serious aspects and necessary care provision alongside the social, spiritual and emotional needs of the patients has been discussed at length and addressed throughout the design process. Through a comprehensive consultation process with staff, volunteers, patients and families the building has evolved into a unique solution to a challenging brief.

To negate the potential sprawl of the complex brief and room relationships, the programme has been reduced to four interconnected ‘villas’ that reduce the overall perception of scale and minimise the building footprint. This is further reinforced where the ‘villas’ floorplates have been ‘stacked’ to work in conjunction with the existing site topography and create vertical relationships. The form of this massing is derived from ‘Greek’ Thomsons ‘Double Villa’ which is located nearby the site. Here, the ‘villas’ are duplicates but turned to face in opposite directions to take advantage of extensive views and enable them to derive equal benefit from the sun. The articulation of each clock establishes a close harmony with the planned landscape setting in the round. The geometry and overlapping of the villas arrangement create a central, top-lit space that is a focal point for the Prince Princess of Wales Hospice integral art therapy and public circulation. Carved at the heart of each ‘villa’ is a social space which provide orientation with natural opportunities for informal meetings, conversations and quiet reflection.

The protective nature of the building is realised in a loggia, or verandah, that runs around the whole building providing a transition zone between the interior spaces and the surrounding landscape. This is an integral domestic scaled space for patient use and inhabitation. The inhabited perimeter contains a series of ‘familiar elements’ –, terraces, alcoves for private reflection or discussion, stairs to access the gardens. The robust quality of the perimeter breaks down outwith the overhanging roof elements where the traditional notion of a bay window appears to allow a more direct exposure and interaction with the landscape. Whether windowed, screened, or open-air, the loggia is realised as the critical mediating space between the formality of a consulting room or bedroom and the informality of the outdoors. It becomes an integral part of the Hospice design, rather than a tacked-on element. A place to linger, a place to pause or savour a cherished view.

NORD have turned to natural slate for the external skin of the building, which reinforces the protective nature of the building envelope. Internally timber linings create warmth and the prevailing aura is hushed and conducive to thoughtful, concentrated spaces. One senses the physical weight of the building on the outside at the same time as the ethereal quality of the light filled, warm, interior spaces. These protective elements differ in density and permeability depending on the interior functions, sunlight and the site conditions. The backdrop of this protective zone is a brickwork construction that relates to the existing ‘garden walls’ within Bellahouston Park whilst also reinforcing a familiar domestic construction method.

Our proposal might look slightly familiar, almost normal, but has something unexpected, surprising and memorable about it. Familiar, because it’s basic components are archetypes of traditional buildings; it will be a family of simple spaces with carefully placed windows allowing visual access to the outside at all times, it will have domestic scale doors, party walls, articulated pitched roof, chimneys, window seats and alcoves. This will be a piece of architecture, which feels comfortably like home, humble and dignified, unobtrusive and private when required.

Breaking new ground for the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice

IN a special appearance in Glasgow, Laura Fraser, the star of hit television series Breaking Bad, encouraged people to put their heart into the Prince Princess of Wales Hospice.

Loading article content

The Hollywood actress, who grew up in Glasgow, is the newest patron of the hospice and put the first spade in the ground at the site of the state-of-the-art facility to be built at Bellahouston Park.

She also helped to launch the Foundation Appeal, the push to raise the remaining £333,000 of the £1 million needed to lay the groundwork.

“Message hearts have already begun pouring in from all over the city. They will be placed in a large chest and sunk into the foundations under the front door of the new hospice,” she said.

“These messages are incredibly touching and you can clearly see from the sentiments expressed, just how much the hospice means to the people of Glasgow.”

Friends, volunteers, dignitaries and supporters of the existing Carlton Place hospice gathered at the south side park where the new building will go up, due to open its doors in 2018.

Lord Provost Sadie Docherty said more than 36,000 people had been treated at the hospice since it opened 30 years ago.

“This is an emotional day for many of us,” she added. “We are witnessing the dawn of a new era for the care of the terminally ill.”

Jamie Hepburn, Minister for Sport, Health Improvement and Mental Health, praised the effort of the fundraising carried out to build the facility. In total it will take £21m to build the hospice on a hilltop site in the park, with £6.5m still to raise.

“The dedicated hospice staff play such an important role, and I would also to recognise the work of the many volunteers, fundraisers and supporters throughout the hospice movement,” he said.

“This new facility will bring world-class hospice care to the people of Glasgow, offering privacy and compassionate care to the people who need it.”

This will be the first hospice in the UK to implement the Sengetun model of care – a Scandinavian model that puts patients and family at the centre of its focus alongside optimal operational efficiency.

It will also provide hotel style comfort with 16 en-suite bedrooms with private terraces, soft seated areas and domestic style, open plan kitchens. The accommodation will allow patients and families the opportunity to eat together. The aim is to provide more space, independence and privacy to allow greater opportunity for normal family activity.

The new hospice’s commitment to the palliative care of young people aged 15 and over will also include specialised accommodation to meet their particular needs. This will include family bedrooms, family lounges, social areas, complementary therapy rooms, spa bathrooms, a hydrotherapy pool, sanctuary, sensory room, young people’s lounge and training rooms.

The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice

The Prince Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow currently cares for adults with a life limiting or terminal illness and also supports their families. Annually they look after around 1,200 new patients and, on average, each patient will have two members of their family who need their support. These family members include children from the age of 2 years.

In 2013, the Hospice received a grant from DM Thomas Foundation for Young People to support the children whom they come into contact with at what is undoubtedly the most difficult time of their young lives. These children have all experienced bereavement having lost a parent, grandparent or sibling. Many of them have great difficulty in talking about their feelings and their fears for the future, and are concerned about not wishing to upset, even more, their remaining parent or guardian. As a result they may bottle up their feelings which, if not addressed, can manifest themselves into impacting their young lives in a very negative way e.g. depression, problems at school or delinquency. Research tells us that following early parental loss in particular, there is the potential for long-term psychological problems.

With the help of the Foundation, the Hospice s Family Support Team were able to fund specialist bereavement counselling sessions for a number of young children either on a one to one basis, or as part of group therapy. These sessions are specifically designed for the age of each child, for example, for many of the younger children they will be in the form of play. The ultimate aim is to ensure that each child understands what has happened, is reassured that while their life will change they will still be loved and cared for, can grieve for the person they have lost, and that there is no long term psychological damage which will affect them in the future. The Hospice is very grateful to the Foundation for helping to shape the lives of these children.

DM Thomas Foundation awarded a grant of £2,000 to The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in 2013.

The Prince of Wales meets patients and staff at the Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice

The Prince of Wales visited Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice today, meeting patients and staff of the charity.

His Royal Highness has been a Patron of Sue Ryder ”“ Leckhampton Court Hospice since 1986 and every other Christmas visits to spend time with patients, and hear about the work the hospice is doing.

On arrival, The Prince was met by Elise Hoadley, Hospice Director and Sue Ryder CEO, Heidi Travis. His Royal Highness went to the art studio and spoke to Day Hospice patients about their watercolour paintings and shared techniques.

The Prince was updated on the new Day Hospice, which officially opened in June 2014, following donations from local supporters and a grant from the Department of Health.

The King’s Fund, of which The Prince is President, supported the hospice on the interior design of the new building, ensuring a healing and tranquil environment was created.

During the visit, The Prince was shown the Day Hospice’s new treatment and therapy rooms, where Sandra Flannagan, Day Hospice Manager, talked to The Prince about how the hospice is able to offer onsite blood transfusions and other clinical treatments, allow patients to retain their independence for as long as possible.

The Prince also met nurses, support staff and the Hospice at Home Manager who he spoke to about the services they offer the community.

Elise Hoadley, Hospice Director, concludes: “Christmas should be time of celebration and even though our patients and their loved ones are going through a very difficult time, we strive to make sure that they have as enjoyable a time as possible.

“We cannot thank The Prince of Wales enough for taking the time to visit us just a few days before Christmas, and for giving our patients and their loved such an extra special memory that they can treasure forever.”

The Prince Princess of Wales Hospice Glasgow

The Prince Princess of Wales Hospice is a registered Scottish charity that looks after the palliative care needs of people living in and around greater Glasgow. The cost of looking after patients, their carers, and their families, is 5 million a year, with 1.9 million coming from the National Health Service. So we can keep our doors open, and look after those who need our support, our hospice fundraising and events team must raise the remaining 3.1 million shortfall.

This is a very very big challenge. It requires the energy, enthusiasm and generosity of thousands of people each year to make this happen. There are so many ways you can help us help our patients, carers and families. You can take part in one of our events, which run throughout the year, or our fundraising and events team could lend their support to you, so you and your family and friends can organise an event of your own.

You can donate or buy from one of our eighteen hospice shops that are situated around Glasgow, or visit our online shops and do your shopping from the comfort of your own home or work place. Our shop and support giving space lets you buy a service in support of the work we do. Here you can help us run an ambulance for a week, or buy a day of services, or an hour of nurse s time.

Other ways to help us raise the money we need include, leaving a legacy in your will to the hospice in memory of your loved one, or by simply donating. Glasgow s Hospice is thankful of any way you choose to help and look forward to having your support as we continue caring for the people of Glasgow. For more information about how you can get involved in raising money for us contact us. THANK YOU from all of us at the hospice.
