Install DirectX 9 on Windows 10 for SWTOR and other Old Games

Install DirectX 9 on Windows 10 for SWTOR and other Old Games

Installing the old DirectX 9 on Windows 10 may improve your Game Performance and FPS.

This guide is valid for any older game that benefits and runs on old DirectX versions.

Windows 10 comes packed with the newest edition of DirectX 12. My favorite game SWTOR and many other older game titles use DirectX 9. In order for it to display its beauty, the system needs to emulate all the DirectX 9 effects, which may slow it down and result in a poor performance. By installing the DirectX 9 package manually, we stop that process of simulation and allow our PC to use the original files the game is designed for, thus, in theory at least, speeding the process up. This installation wont make the game run smooth and flawlessly, but it will likely boost it at least a bit. I have done this since the game s launch in 2011 on multiple versions of Windows Windows 7, Windows 8 + 8.1 and now Windows 10 .

The installation is simple. Download the file from the link I have provided below (leading to the official Microsoft website) and install with no manual changes during the process. By doing that, you DO NOT remove the DirectX 12, no, it just installs extra libraries and gives the game you play an option which ones to use. If the game can benefit from DirectX 11 or 12, it WILL use those. There is no overriding or replacing, the installation just adds another layer.

One last note. Installing DirectX 9 does not hurt your system, it will not break anything. The link provided below is from Microsoft s official website.

You can download the old DirectX 9 from here:

If you have any troubles, leave a comment and let me know of YOUR experience. Did DirectX 9 improve the performance of the game for you or it feels and acts exactly the same as before.

another problem i download CODMW4 in my laptop windows 10 and when i run the game it says bink32.dll is missing from your computer try reinstalling the program to fix this problem

Binkw32.dll errors are caused by issues that the particular game you re trying to install or play is having with the Bink Video codec created by RAD Game Tools, Inc.

Copy the binkw32.dll file from your game s System directory to your game s root directory. In some games, the binkw32.dll file is placed in the wrong directory when the game is installed.

how di i do it??Copy the binkw32.dll file from your game s System directory to your game s root directory

hi i have downloaded generals zero hour in my pc windos 10 i have 2 problems about the game 1 is when i run the update patch it says missing or invalid registry/ini entry what should i do and the 2nd problem is when i click the generals zero hour exe it says you must run the game from its install directory pls answer me

I need direct X 9 too, I used your link, but, i modified the compatibility set up, I still have the error message this program is made for window XP, Vista, 95, 98 and you can t install it so. Do you have any solutions for me.
Thank you, and please, pardon my poor english, I m frensh!

The link in the article is still working. A quick note It s not my link as it leads directly to Microsoft s website. This is the official latest DX9 I linked to. I have Windows 10 Pro with Creators Update.

I m sorry I can t be of more help to you on this matter.

Huum. Ok don t worry, just a last thing, I have Windows 10 Family, maybe is there the origin of my problem.
Well, thank you anyway. and you article is great, really !

Installing Ubuntu inside Windows using VirtualBox #virtual #server #tutorial, #installing #ubuntu #inside

Installing Ubuntu inside Windows using VirtualBox

The screenshots in this tutorial use Ubuntu 12.04, but the same principles apply also to Ubuntu 12.10, 11.10, 10.04, and any future version of Ubuntu. Actually, you can install pretty much any Linux distribution this way.

VirtualBox allows you to run an entire operating system inside another operating system. Please be aware that you should have a minimum of 512 MB of RAM. 1 GB of RAM or more is recommended.

Comparison to Dual-Boot
Many websites (including the one you’re reading) have tutorials on setting up dual-boots between Windows and Ubuntu. A dual-boot allows you, at boot time, to decide which operating system you want to use. Installing Ubuntu on a virtual machine inside of Windows has a lot advantages over a dual-boot (but also a few disadvantages).

Advantages of virtual installation

  • The size of the installation doesn’t have to be predetermined. It can be a dynamically resized virtual hard drive.
  • You do not need to reboot in order to switch between Ubuntu and Windows.
  • The virtual machine will use your Windows internet connection, so you don’t have to worry about Ubuntu not detecting your wireless card, if you have one.
  • The virtual machine will set up its own video configuration, so you don’t have to worry about installing proprietary graphics drivers to get a reasonable screen resolution.
  • You always have Windows to fall back on in case there are any problems. All you have to do is press the right Control key instead of rebooting your entire computer.
  • For troubleshooting purposes, you can easily take screenshots of any part of Ubuntu (including the boot menu or the login screen).
  • It’s low commitment. If you later decide you don’t like Ubuntu, all you have to do is delete the virtual hard drive and uninstall VirtualBox.

Disadvantages of virtual installation

  • In order to get any kind of decent performance, you need at least 512 MB of RAM, because you are running an entire operating system (Ubuntu) inside another entire operating system (Windows). The more memory, the better. I would recommend at least 1 GB of RAM.
  • Even though the low commitment factor can seem like an advantage at first, if you later decide you want to switch to Ubuntu and ditch Windows completely, you cannot simply delete your Windows partition. You would have to find some way to migrate out your settings from the virtual machine and then install Ubuntu over Windows outside the virtual machine.
  • Every time you want to use Ubuntu, you have to wait for two boot times (the time it takes to boot Windows, and then the time it takes to boot Ubuntu within Windows).

Installation Process
The first thing you have to do is obtain VirtualBox. Visit the VirtualBox website’s download page. Install it the same way you would any normal Windows program.

Follow these instructions to get a Ubuntu disk image (.iso file).

After you launch VirtualBox from the Windows Start menu, click on New to create a new virtual machine. When the New Virtual Machine Wizard appears, click Next.

You can call the machine whatever you want. If you’re installing Ubuntu, it makes sense to call it Ubuntu. I guess. You should also specify that the operating system is Linux.

VirtualBox will try to guess how much of your memory (or RAM) to allocate for the virtual machine. If you have 1 GB or less of RAM, I would advise you stick with the recommendation. If, however, you have over 1 GB, about a quarter your RAM or less should be fine. For example, if you have 2 GB of RAM, 512 MB is fine to allocate. If you have 4 GB of RAM, 1 GB is fine to allocate. If you have no idea what RAM is or how much of it you have, just go with the default.

If this is your first time using VirtualBox (which it probably is if you need a tutorial on how to use it), then you do want to Create new hard disk and then click Next.

Theoretically, a dynamically expanding virtual hard drive is best, because it’ll take up only what you actually use. I have come upon weird situations, though, when installing new software in a virtualized Ubuntu, in which the virtual hard drive just fills up instead of expanding. So I would actually recommend picking a Fixed-size storage.

Ubuntu’s default installation is less than 3 GB. If you plan on adding software or downloading large files in your virtualized Ubuntu, you should tack on some buffer.

Click Create and wait for the virtual hard drive to be created. This is actually just a very large file that lives inside of your Windows installation.

The next thing to do to make the (currently blank) virtual hard drive useful is to add the downloaded Ubuntu disk image (the .iso) boot on your virtual machine. Click on Settings and Storage. Then, under CD/DVD Device. next to Empty. you’ll see a little folder icon. Click that.

Then double-click your virtual machine to start it up.

You may get a bunch of random warnings/instructions about how to operate the guest operating system within VirtualBox. Read those, and then you may also want to mark not to see those again.

Once it’s started up, just follow the regular installation procedure as if you were installing Ubuntu on a real hard drive (instead of a virtual one).

Afterwards, in order to use your virtualized installation (instead of continually booting the live CD), double-check that the CD/DVD Device entry is Empty again.

If you have suggestions or corrections for these tutorials, please post in this Ubuntu Forums thread or leave a comment on my blog.

I will not give help to people posting in the above places. If you require technical support, start a support thread on the Ubuntu Forums. That is the appropriate place to ask for help.

How to successfully recover data from a failed RAID

Recovering data from a failed RAID can easily turn into a costly ordeal. Please read this page carefully before proceeding. If you would like to get help from experts, please consider using our fee-based RAID recovery service.

First determine whether the RAID is hardware-based or software-based. The recovery procedures are very different.

Recovering a hardware RAID

First determine if the problem is caused by the underlying RAID mechanism. If it is not, follow the simpler recovery procedures for an ordinary drive. The following causes of problem are not related to the RAID:

  • Virus attacks.
  • The volume being deleted, resized, reformatted or otherwise changed in Disk Manager or other disk management utilities.

If the problem seems to be in the RAID mechanism, determine the operating state of the RAID and take the appropriate actions.

Avoid the most common mistakes that may cause data to become unrecoverable.

Chagall – s America Windows #windows #reinstallation

Chagall s America Windows

Marc Chagall’s America Windows is one of the most beloved treasures in our vast collection. First debuting at the Art Institute in 1977 and made forever famous less than ten years later by an appearance in the film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. the “Chagall Windows,” as they are more popularly known, hold a special place in the hearts of Chicagoans. Following an intensive period of conservation treatment and archival research, the windows returned in 2010 as the stunning centerpiece of a new presentation at the east end of the museum’s Arthur Rubloff building.

While members and visitors have loved America Windows for years, many may not realize how deeply their history is interwoven with the history of Chicago and its rich tradition of public art. The story begins in the early 1970s, when Chagall came to the city for work related to his mosaic installed outside Chase Tower, The Four Seasons. In response to the city’s enthusiasm for his work and the Art Institute’s great support, the artist offered to create a set of stained-glass windows for the museum. Over the course of three years, plans were clarified, and in the end, Chagall determined that the windows would commemorate America’s bicentennial. The resulting six-panel work celebrates the country as a place of cultural and religious freedom, detailing the arts of music, painting, literature, theater, and dance. Because of his admiration for Chicago and its strong commitment to public art during the 1960s and 1970s, Chagall chose to dedicate the work to Mayor Richard J. Daley, a great supporter of public art projects. The windows were presented with much fanfare at a formal unveiling, hosted by the Auxiliary Board of the Art Institute, on May 15, 1977.

In their new home, the vibrant colors of the windows will once again glow due not only to their extensive conservation but to a new and insightful context of other modern artworks in the museum’s collection related to this moment of the city’s engagement with public sculpture.

Watch a video about the history, creation, conservation, and reinstallation of the “Chagall windows.”

The reinstallation of Marc Chagall’s America Windows is generously sponsored by a grant from the Walter E. Heller Foundation in memory of Alyce DeCosta.
Conservation of Marc Chagall’s America Windows is generously supported by the Auxiliary Board of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Prince Charitable Trusts.

Using Resource Monitor to Troubleshoot Windows Performance Issues Part 1 #windows #server

Using Resource Monitor to Troubleshoot Windows Performance Issues Part 1

Hello AskPerf! Leonard with the Performance Team here to discuss the Resource Monitor tool and we can use it to troubleshoot Windows Performance issues. In this blog, (the first of 2 on the subject of underutilized tools) I will discuss Resource Monitor which is available on both client and server versions of Windows starting with Windows Vista. Resource Monitor can be launched from the advanced tools tab in “Performance Information and Tools”, which is located in Control Panel. It can also be launched directly by running Resmon.exe .

Resource Monitor is a method of viewing Perfmon data. In fact, Resource Monitor is composed of Perfmon data combined with Windows Event Tracing data. You can view this tracing session by launching Perfmon, expanding Data Collector Sets, then select Event Tracing Sessions. There you will see a session called WDC.GUID (the GUID will vary). You can confirm this provides the data for Resource Monitor by observing that this trace is only running when Resource Monitor is running. Also, when it is running, you can view the channels that provide the data. Launching Resource Monitor will also launch a background process of Perfmon to act as a data source.

Resmon will show the window below on first launch. Each new launch will show the view as configured when Resmon was closed.

There are 5 tabs to choose from. The overview tab gives a summary of the other ones. The main tabs are CPU, Memory, Disk and Networking. In each of the tabs the windows on the left can be collapsed, expanded and resized. It is also possible to filter each view by the process, for example you are only interested in seeing the activity for Explorer, check the box for that process and the bottom window will only show the activity for that process. With no processes selected, the bottom windows will show activity for all active processes. The graphs on the right can be resized between small, medium and large, but I would recommend keeping them at the default large setting. The numeric scale for the graphs will change as activity changes.

    My Favorite features

The memory tab has one unique graph that provides a quick view of what physical memory is being used for.

It is easy to see the total physical memory and what it is being actively used along with showing what is hardware reserved. Hardware Reserved represents physical memory addresses that have been reserved by hardware (generally busses like PCI or video cards) and is not available for Windows to use. It is usually small on x64 systems (except servers that do memory mirroring) but can be several 100MB up to 1GB on x32 systems. This means a 4GB x86 system can have only 3 GB of accessible memory.

The network tab is useful in that it not only shows the process that is generating activity, but the IP address it is connected to.

I recently had an issue where the system process was showing high CPU activity on a Windows 2008 Server. Two of the things that run in system are the SMB and SMB2 processes. I suspected that the high CPU was due to network activity and was a load based problem and not a problem with a process. To confirm that was the cause, I used Process Explorer to determine the threads that were running in the system process. I confirmed that there were 15+ SMB and SMB2 threads that were always the highest consumer of CPU. I then ran Resmon and looked at all of the IP addresses that were associated with system. We identified a management server that was receiving a lot of data. Based on that information, we were able to narrow down the problem to the request coming from that server. While the problem could have been identified using different tools, Resmon provided the most efficient way to identify the problem.

I hope this overview of Resource Monitor will make it one of the tools you use the next time you need to look at performance data or activity on the system.

    1. I opened Resmon.exe from command windows with elevated access.
    2. Clicked on Monitor in Menu, and clicked on Start monitoring.
    And I get below error

    [Window Title]
    Performance Monitor
    [Main Instruction]
When attempting to start Resource Monitor, the following system error occurred:
    Access is denied.

    Cheyenne Web Server #server #cfg, #cheyenne #web #server #rebol #free #open #source

    14-Sep-2013 – Cheyenne sources moved to git/Github [0032 ]

The Cheyenne codebase has been moved from svn/Googlecode to git/Github. The change was made to simplify contributions to Cheyenne, and to regroup my open source projects at the same place (like Red and CureCode ).

In the process of changing the backend building scripts to support git, we also extended the supported platforms for automated builds, we now supports Windows and Mac OSX. in addition to Linux. The new builds are generated twice a day, if new commits are found in the master branch.

Thanks very much to Tamas Herman for helping with the scripts coding and providing the Mac OSX machine, and thanks to the HackJam hackerspace group from Hong-Kong for the hosting!

Please find the latest Cheyenne builds on the updated Download page.

    12-Aug-2013 – CORS support added [0031 ]

Thanks to the kind sponsoring of Alan Macleod, Cheyenne now has a module for handling Cross Origin Resource Sharing protocol, basically allowing Javascript to make requests to another domain than the one the script originated from.

In order to use the new mod-cors module, you need to:

    1. Uncomment the cors module line in global section of the httpd.cfg config file.
    2. Add at least one allow-cors directive in a virtual host settings block.

    28-Nov-2011 – Websocket support upgraded to hybi-10 [0030 ]

The websocket communication protocol is quite a moving target, it changes several times a year, sometimes breaking compatibility with previous revisions. Cheyenne is now up-to-date and supports the last RFC revision (named “hybi-10”), starting from Cheyenne revision 155.

All protocol features have been implemented but some are not tested yet, as they require a custom-made client (the Javascript websocket API does not support those features yet AFAICT):

    • Ping/pong frames
    • Fragmented frames

The server-side user API has been left untouched, a ping command might be added later though. The websocket chat demo has been upgraded too and now supports Chrome 14+, FF8+ and IE10.

    27-Nov-2011 – Cheyenne at PHP Tour 2011 [0029 ]

I have been invited a couple of days ago at PHP Tour 2011 event in Lille (France) to make a presentation of Cheyenne to the PHP community and demonstrate Cheyenne ability to interface with a PHP FastCGI server and serve PHP generated content. I had a great time with developers from PHP community and enjoyed great presentations from Zend engineers about their famous framework and cryptography support in PHP.

Here are my presentation slides (in french):

If you are experiencing issues seeing the slides in flash format, here’s a PDF version .

If you are wondering what slide 4 is about, it is just a warning for people confusing this Cheyenne server with the one embedded in the ADSL box of one of french ISP (which is just an Apache instance renamed, and that name used to appear when an internal error occured in the box).

    8-Jun-2011 – Cheyenne at Chti’RUG2011 [0028 ]

I was at Chti’RUG2011 french event at Lille a week ago and did a presentation of Cheyenne. This is the same presentation I did at ReBorCon2011, just translated in french (available in PDF format ).

There is a french blog article by Olivier Auverlot talking about this meeting.

Unity is going away and GNOME is coming back

Canonical decided to drop Unity in favor of GNOME, which is probably not the best decision. I think that it s probably a mistake, but it was also an unavoidable move for the company.People have to keep in mind that Ubuntu for desktop was never profitable, and it s easy to see why. There are very few ways to monetize a free operating system. The only way to get some money out of it is to provide specialized support for companies, but that s also not a really profitable avenue. It s very likely that Canonical is making some money from its other products, especially the ones built for the.

The new Apple is a company that changes its mind and is not afraid to take a U-turn or even jump off a cliff

So, you think you know Apple? You think you can predict what their next move is and how the design is going to change?Think again. The new Apple is taking big steps towards. something else. Even for old Apple die-hards is hard to predict where the company is going. Yes, Apple has always been the company that brought something new, invented a new gadget or switched to a new connector just when you thought you got a new accessory, but this time. things are a bit different. There are two ways in which Apple has changed and became totally unpredictable. The hardware kinda lacks behind and we still.

And then, your heart stops beating for a few seconds

You watch TV all snuggled up under the super-soft blanket with your phone just next to you on the couch. It s a commercial break, and you snatch at the glass of wine on the coffee table when, suddenly, you hear a noise. It sounds like something just hit the ground. You don t look around, but in that half of second, you know it can t be good.It can be just two things. It s either the remote or the phone. You start praying it s the remote. It s not. It s the phone, and it s laying on the ground face down after what seemed to be like a pretty strong hit. Yo.

Here s a case for iPhone 7s, not iPhone 8

The first quarter of fiscal 2017 is the best ever for iPhone. Apple sold 78.3 million iPhones in the past few months. The revenue from the iPhone business alone topped $54.4 billion. The best model was, rather unexpectedly, the iPhone 7 Plus. But is that enough to make Apple a winner in the long run?Two very low quartersThe market will stagnate for Apple in the next couple of quarters. The first reason is obvious: no Black Friday, no Christmas or any other important holidays will help the iPhone business. Also, keep in mind that every iOS user will quit spending money on an 8-month-old device and wait.

Will Apple dedicate more time and money to the cloud? How about Siri and the Desktop computer line-up?

2016 was all about the MacBook. The computer that is going to change the future of ports and connectors was born. We have also got a phone with a missing headphone jack. For some users, this is a big downer. Others are happy with their AirPods. Next year seems to be a good one for the desktop computer. Will the Mac mini survive? Is the Mac Pro still up for a refresh?Siri on macOSSiri jumped from the iPhone to the Mac in 2016. It was a long-awaited move that failed to amaze users. Sure enough, the implementation is simple and elegant, just as Apple would do it, but the functionality lacks. Siri ca.

The top companies in the tech world are getting tired of Adobe s Flash Player, and after many years of struggling to deal with its security vulnerabilities, key players like Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Mozilla are finally pushing for the transition to HTML5 in a more aggressive way.Flash Player will be disabled by default in browsers developed by these companies, as HTML5 will be preferred on websites that support it, and users will be given full control over Flash content on websites where it s absolutely mandatory. And while the trend here is to step away from Flash, Adobe is trying exa.

    KB1873: How-To Export Windows Event Logs #windows #event #log #management

    How-To Export Windows Event Logs

When submitting a support case for technical assistance, it is sometimes necessary to upload relevant Windows event logs in addition to the Veeam logs. Event logs exported using default settings can be missing important information. This article describes three different methods of exporting Windows event logs and which logs tend to be most useful for certain types of support cases.

Below are the three common methods a Veeam Support Engineer may request you gather event logs for them. If they have specified a specific method, please use the requested method.

Method 1: Export EVTX with Display Information (MetaData)

An .evtx file alone does not contain the text of most events, so uploading an .evtx file without the associated Display Information can delay resolution of your support case. Even with the display information, an .evtx contains only the UTC time of the events and not the source time zone (Event viewer adjusts the displayed time to your local time zone).

Steps to Export .evtx with Display Information

    1. Open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc).
    2. Locate the log to be exported in the left-hand column.
    3. Right-click the name of the log and select Save All Events As…
    4. Enter a file name that includes the log type and the server it was exported from.
For example, when exporting the Application event log from server named HV01, enter Application_HV01.
    5. In Save as type. select Event Files .
    6. Include display information.

    7. Be sure to include the LocaleMetaData folder when packaging logs for upload.

Please package all files into a single .zip archive. For information on uploading files to Support, see: Steps to Compile Logs

To export and then archive an event log from the command line, see: Archive an Event Log

    Method 2: Export as CSV

    5. In Save as type. select CSV (Comma Separated) .

Please package all files into a single .zip archive. For information on uploading files to Support, see: Steps to Compile Logs

To export and then archive an event log from the command line, see: Archive an Event Log

Method 3: Collect entire log folder from Windows.

    1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs
    2. Archive (ZIP\7z\RAR) the entire contents of the Logs folder.

Please package all files into a single .zip archive. For information on uploading files to Support, see: Steps to Compile Logs

To export and then archive an event log from the command line, see: Archive an Event Log

    Which Logs to Export
Veeam Support will request logs as needed, but you can speed up resolution of a new case by checking to see if it falls into one of the categories below and uploading appropriate event logs during case creation.

    • For Hyper-V Snapshot (Shadow Copy) Failures
Export the following event logs from the standalone Hyper-V host or from all cluster nodes :
    ○Windows Logs System
    ○Windows Logs Application
○Applications and Services Logs Microsoft Hyper-V-VMMS Admin

If Application-Aware Image Processing is enabled in the Backup or Replication job settings, test whether the failure occurs with that setting disabled.

If the problem occurs only when Application-Aware is enabled, export the Hyper-V-Integration log from the Hyper-V host managing the VM, then see Guest Processing Issues below.

○Applications and Services Logs Microsoft Hyper-V-Integration Admin

Common examples include failure to truncate Exchange or SQL transaction logs, “VSSControl” error codes, and unexpected behavior occuring with the VM guest OS during backup.

Export these logs from the affected VM guest OS:
    ○Windows Logs System
    ○Windows Logs Application

You will typically also want to collect the Veeam VSS logs from the VM – see KB1789.

    • For Problems with Backup Infrastructure Servers
In all scenarios below, export the following from the appropriate server. When in doubt, export from the Veeam Backup server:
    ○Windows Logs System
    ○Windows Logs Application

    If the error message is:
○“task failed unexpectedly” – Export events from the Veeam Backup server.
○referring to backup files on a Windows server – Export events from the repository server.
○referring to backup files on a CIFS/SMB share – Export events from the gateway server, or from the Veeam Backup server and all proxies if no gateway was specified in the repository settings.

Top 10: Remote Desktop Keyboard Shortcuts

Have you ever been using one of your RDP sessions to manage a remote system and found that you needed to press Ctrl+Alt+Del on the remote system but you couldn t remember how to do it inside the Remote Desktop window? Just pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del sends the keystrokes to your local desktop, which certainly isn t what you wanted. If you ve ever had this problem, then this Top 10 column is your answer. In this column, I show you 10 handy keyboard shortcuts you can use in your remote desktop sessions.

    10. Ctrl+Alt+plus sign (+) Dealing with capturing screen images from a Remote Desktop session can be a mystery. If you press Print Screen, you get an image of your local desktop not the remote desktop. Pressing the Ctrl+Alt+plus sign (+) keyboard shortcut captures a snapshot of the entire client window area of Remote Desktop and is the same as pressing Print Screen on your local desktop.

    9. Ctrl+Alt+minus sign (-) Sometimes you don t want an image of the entire desktop; sometimes you want just a selected window. Pressing the Ctrl+Alt+minus sign (-) keyboard shortcut captures a snapshot of just the active window within the remote desktop session. This key combination is the same as pressing Alt+Print Screen on your local desktop.

    8. Alt+Home Pressing the Alt+Home keyboard combination with Remote Desktop displays the Start menu on the remote system. The Start menu gives you quick access to the different programs installed on the remote system. This key combination is the same as pressing the Windows key on your local desktop.

    7. Alt+Delete Pressing the Alt+Delete keyboard combination in the Remote Desktop session opens the Windows menu of an application running on the remote system. The Windows menu is typically displayed under the icon in the extreme upper left corner of most Windows applications, and it lets you move and resize the application.

    6. Ctrl+Alt+Break Sometimes you might want the Remote Desktop window to be displayed in full-screen mode just as if you were using your local desktop. If you want to toggle the Remote Desktop session between a window and a full-screen display, you can press the Ctrl+Alt+Break keyboard combination.

    5. Ctrl+Alt+Pause Like the previous item, the Ctrl+Alt+Pause keyboard combination switches between full screen and windowed mode. However, with this keyboard shortcut, the remote desktop window remains at its standard size and doesn t fill the entire local desktop. Instead, it s displayed on a black background.

    4. Alt+Insert Sometimes you want a quick way to switch between the different programs that you have running. Pressing the Alt+Insert keyboard combination lets you cycle through the programs on the remote system in the order that they were opened. This process is the same as using Alt+Tab on your local desktop.

    3. Alt+Page Down Another way to cycle through the running programs on your Remote Desktop session is to use the Alt+Page Down keyboard shortcut. Pressing this key combination lets you switch between programs on the remote desktop session, moving from right to left in the Windows task switcher. This is the same as Alt+Shift+Tab on your standard desktop.

    2. Alt+Page Up Pressing Alt+Page Up lets you switch between programs on the Remote Desktop session, moving from left to right in the Windows task switcher. This is the same as Alt+Tab on your standard desktop.

    1. Ctrl+Alt+End One of the most common yet hard-to-find things that you ll need to do in a Remote Desktop session is to send a Ctrl+Alt+Del signal to the remote system. Press Ctrl+Alt+End if you need to send a Ctrl+Alt+Del keystroke combination to the remote system. This keystroke opens the Microsoft Windows Security dialog box, which lets you lock the computer, log off, change your password, and start Task Manager.

    Windows 8 Tip: Use Windows 7 System Image Backup #windows # #backup

Windows 8 Tip: Use Windows 7 System Image Backup

As the foundation for your mobile computing future, Windows 8 provides next generation recovery tools, Push Button Reset for OS reinstalls, and File History for document versioning. But these utilities make many PC users and enthusiasts nervous. If only there was a way to use the system image backup capabilities from Windows 7 in Windows 8.

    Good news: There is.

Unsurprisingly, however, Microsoft has made this functionality hard to find. In Windows 7, you could simply search for and launch Windows Backup, and you d be up and running with a complete, system image-based backup that you could use later to restore the entire PC.

If you re not familiar with Windows Backup, please read: Windows 7 Feature Focus: Backup and Restore. And if you re unsure about whether to use this old-school backup type or the new features in Windows 8, please read Windows 8 Tip: Picking a Backup Strategy .

In Windows 8, Windows Backup is hard to find. Search for backup and you ll find only File History, for example. But it s there: Search for recovery instead.

And in the search results, under Settings, choose the renamed Windows 7 File Recovery. The control panel that launches, which, yes, is now called Windows 7 File Recovery, used to be called Backup and Restore in Windows 7. And as with its predecessor, this control panel is the front-end for Windows Backup, which provides that system image backup capability.

Windows 7 File Recovery is in Windows 8 primarily so that upgraders can access the files contained in backups previously made in Windows 7. But there s no reason you can t use this to make new system image backups in Windows 8. It works exactly as before: Just click Set up backup and get started.

Note that you ll probably also want to create a system repair disk, which can be used to boot your PC and restore it using the system image backup you re now creating, in the event of a hard drive issue or other hardware failure. I wrote about that process in Windows 8 Tip: Create Recovery Media. The recovery process has indeed changed in Windows 8, but it s straightforward and, if anything, nicer than it was in Windows 7 even if you use system image backups.

I’m not keen on the deprecation of Windows 7 Backup. Backups are an area where either the software should be kept up to date and compatible, or be eliminated entirely. (Read-only access would be an exception.)

That Windows 7 Backup is no longer getting updates in Windows 8 is fine in and of itself, given that it currently works. However the OS around it will continue to be updated, and incompatabilities that creep in could, in principle, create a situation where the user suffers data loss without any advance warning. For example even if it continues to save data correctly, if it loses the ability to restore said data the user will not become aware of the problem until they attempt to use the backup, at which point every other copy has usually been eaten by the dog.

So, I won’t be using it. Image Backup is cute if you have to swap out a drive but it turns out (after a PC migration) that I only have about two dozen apps installed, so I can do things the hard way. The File and Folder backup has always been painfully slow, especially on older hardware. It takes an age and a lot of CPU grunt to make all those 200MB ZIP files.

I used the “File and Folder” backup on Win 7 for a while. One day I decided I was tired of not being able to see what was in those zip files, so I “restored” to an ntfs partition on the backup hard drive and discovered what a disaster it was. (Yes, I had to create an ntfs partition just to do this.) The disaster part is that all my careful curating of files was lost. Everything I deleted was back! Unbelievable! I wouldn’t even had noticed, except that Security Essentials again caught a file it had caught previously and which I had deleted. So I went back to using the fast, accurate, and checkable Synctoy.

    What is UrBackup?

UrBackup is an easy to setup Open Source client/server backup system, that through a combination of image and file backups accomplishes both data safety and a fast restoration time.

File and image backups are made while the system is running without interrupting current processes.

UrBackup also continuously watches folders you want backed up in order to quickly find differences to previous backups. Because of that, incremental file backups are really fast.

Your files can be restored through the web interface, via the client or the Windows Explorer while the backups of drive volumes can be restored with a bootable CD or USB-Stick (bare metal restore).

A web interface makes setting up your own backup server really easy. For a quick impression please look at the screenshots here .

Currently there are over 10,000 running UrBackup server instances (with auto-update enabled) with some instances having hundreds of active clients.

    BackupAssist – System State backup and restore #backupassist, #backup #assist, #backup, #back

    System State backup and restore

What’s included in a System State backup?

The exact system components that make up your machine’s System State depend on the operating system installed and how it is has been configured. A System State backup generally includes a copy of any installed device drivers and related files, most of the Windows directory, the Windows Registry, the Active Directory configuration (where applicable) and system files under Windows File Protection.

System State backups for Vista and Server 2008 are usually between 7GB and 15 GB and for XP and Server 2003, they are generally much smaller, being between 200MB and 300 MB. Many files in the Windows directory have multiple hard links. If you are backing up the System State using the File Replication Engine or the Rsync Engine and have Single Instance Store enabled, only a single copy of each multiply linked file will be stored on your backup destination. This data does not need to be copied on subsequent backups, which reduces backup times and saves storage space on your destination.

Why is a System State backup useful?

From a System State backup you can restore your Windows system settings in the event of a system failure or corruption. A System State backup is therefore particularly important for disaster recovery purpose as it eliminates you having to reconfigure Windows back to its original state before the system failure occurred.

We recommended that you always have a recent backup of your System State and that you should perform System State backups on a regular basis, even daily, to increase your level of protection. We also recommended that you perform System State backups before and after any major change is made to your server.

How to back up the System State

With BackupAssist v6 you can schedule local* ‘System State only’ backups across all modern Windows operating systems, or even back up the System State as part of a larger backup including files and applications, using File Replication, Zip, or Windows Imaging. A System State backup includes important Windows systems settings, such as the Registry, and is crucial for system recovery.

*BackupAssist cannot be used to back up the System State of a remote machine; you must install BackupAssist on each server of which you require a System State backup.

Complete the following steps to configure a BackupAssist job to back up the local machine’s System State:

    1. Launch BackupAssist and either edit an existing File Replication, Zip or Imaging job by selecting Edit from the top menu and choosing the appropriate job, or create a new File Replication, Zip or Imaging job by going to File New backup job .
    2. If you are creating a new job check the Backup local system state option during the Files and Folders step of the Job Creation Wizard.
    3. If you are editing an existing job select Files and folders from the left menu, click the Local system selections tab, and then enable the Backup local system state option .

How to restore the System State

Complete the following steps to restore the System Stattefrom a BackupAssist backup using the BackupAssist Restore Console:

    • Note. you cannot restore the System State from an Image backup using the BackupAssist Restore Console. You must use the built-in Windows tool, wbadmin. Visit for instructions.
    1. In BackupAssist, Click Restore in the top navigation bar and choose the BackupAssist Restore Console .
    2. Click Load all known backups to load all backup catalogues located in the BackupAssist settings folder, or use the Browse option to locate the backup set from which you want to restore.
    3. Choose the job that corresponds to the backup from which you want to restore the System State
    4. Use the calendar to select the date of the backup from which you wish to restore.
      • Note. dates for which backups are available are marked in bold on the calendar.
    5. Use the middle pane to expand the loaded backup set and select the System State to restore.
      • Note. files located on the Windows system drive (C: drive in the example above) may be available for restore, even though only the System State was selected for backup. These files are associated with the System State. If you choose to restore individual files from this list and not the System State, the System State will not be restored, and the files themselves may not restore correctly. If you choose to restore these files together with the System State, the System State option will override selections where there is an overlap. If you want to perform a full restore and are unsure which files are included in the System State we recommend selecting both the System State and all other files listed.
    6. Once you have made your selections click the Restore to button on the bottom right of the window.
    7. The restore confirmation screen will then load:
You can choose to restore the System State either to its original location or to an alternate location of your choosing. If you select an alternate location click [. ] to set an alternate restore path.
    8. Once you have selected where to restore the System State to, click OK to perform the restore.
      • Note. if you are restoring the System State to a machine that hosts Directory Services, you will be prompted to reboot into the Directory Services Restore Mode.
      • Note. During a System State restore the necessary files are copied to a temporary directory and then moved to their correct location after a reboot of the machine. Before the restore starts, the Restore Console will take a VSS snapshot of the volumes to be restored. This allows the user to manually roll back to a pre-restore state, if necessary, using Windows’ previous versions feature.

Cool Things to Do with Netsh

The Netsh command is a powerful command-line tool for Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000. Netsh is available in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit and is standard in Windows 2003 and XP. Netsh lets you change almost any network configuration setting as well as document network configurations. You can use the command in a batch file or from its own command shell. Netsh has a useful Help system that you can access by adding /? to almost any of its subcommands. Here are 10 cool things that you can use Netsh to do.

    10. Show TCP/IP settings The command

shows the system s current TCP/IP configuration settings. You can see whether the system is using DHCP or static addressing as well as view the system s current IP address, subnet mask, gateway address, and DNS servers.

    9. Change network configuration Netsh can change the current network configuration. The command

sets the IP address of the system configuration Local Area Connection to, the subnet mask to, and the gateway address to This use of Netsh comes in handy for laptops that must switch between static and dynamic addressed networks.

    8. Use a dynamic DHCP assigned address The command

sets the IP address of the Local Area Connection system configuration to use DHCP addressing.

    7. Change a DNS server address When you change the system s IP address type, you almost always have to change the DNS server s address as well. The command

configures the Local Area Connection to use a DNS server whose address is

    6. Dynamically assign the DNS server address When you switch to dynamic DHCP addressing, you typically also want the DNS server address to be assigned dynamically. The command

sets the Local Area Connection interface to use a DHCP-assigned DNS address.

    5. Configure a WINS server Netsh also lets you configure WINS servers. The following command configures a system s Local Area Connection interface to use a WINS server that has the IP address

    4. Work with other interfaces Netsh works with DHCP, Internet Authentication Service (IAS), and RAS interfaces as well as the local network interface. The command

dumps the local DHCP server s configuration to the dhcpcfg.dat file. You can use this file in conjunction with Netsh to recreate the DHCP server.

    3. Work with remote systems One of Netsh s best hidden features is its ability to work with remote systems. The command

sets the current computer to a different system on the network.

    2. Save the current configuration The Interface Dump subcommand saves your current network configuration and generates a script that you can use to regenerate the configuration. The command

redirects the Dump command to the mycfg.dat file.

    1. Restore network configuration The Netsh Exec command runs a Netsh script file. The command

restores to your system the network configuration data that the preceding sample command saved.

I too ran into this problem. Do this: 1. Create a batch file called netsh.bat ( for example ) with the netsh commands you would like to run ( just as they would run locally on your PC ) 2. Copy netsh.bat to C:\ (for example) on all of the nodes that need the change ( you can copy netsh.bat across your LAN via another batch file ). 3. With another batch file, schedule an AT job on each node that needs the change: this at job should run c:\netsh.bat ( that has already been copied to each node that needs the change ). This works becuase the job is running locally on each PC, rather than being pushed from another. Thanks, and good luck. -LP

To add multiple DNS entries you need to type: netsh interface ip set dns name=”Wireless Network Connection” source=static addr= register=PRIMARY netsh interface ip add dns name=”Wireless Network Connection” addr= index=2 They need to be entered on a separate line.

    Cameron Fairbairn (not verified)

In order to add multiple DNS servers, use the following syntax: add dns “Local Area Connection” add dns “Local Area Connection” index=2 index=2 adds the IP as a secondary dns server.

    Anonymous User (not verified)

Wow, that came out ugly, let me try again: C:\WINNT\system32>netsh netsh>interface interface>show interface Admin State State Type Interface Name ————————————————————————- Enabled Dedicated Local Area Connection Enabled Internal Internal Enabled Loopback Loopback (Note: Look for “Dedicated” connection types with any name other than a GUID) interface>ip interface ip>delete dns “Local Area Connection” all interface ip>set dns “Local Area Connection” static interface ip>add dns “Local Area Connection” index=2

Would anyone know why I am getting the following error with #3, which is the remote command. When I run “netsh set machine virtual2000” I get the following response “WARNING: Could not obtain host information from machine: []. Some commands may not be available. Access is denied” The result is identical when I try “netsh -r virtual2000” I have tried physical servers as well, but I get the same result. I tried to google the error, but I don’t see anything. The netsh interface works fine until you get to the “set IP address” portion”. At that point, the available commands are blank.

The sentence “The Netsh command is a powerful command-line tool for Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000. Netsh is available in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit and is standard in Windows 2003 and XP.” should be changed to “The Netsh command is a powerful command-line tool that is installed by default for Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000.” Netsh is included with Windows 2000, not as part of the Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit. Thanks.

Find your interface name & set multiple dns entries like this: C:\WINNT\system32>netsh netsh>interface interface>show interface Admin State State Type Interface Name ————————————————————————- Enabled Dedicated Local Area Connection Enabled Internal Internal Enabled Loopback Loopback (Note: Look for “Dedicated” connection types with any name other than a GUID) interface>ip interface ip>delete dns “Local Area Connection” all interface ip>set dns “Local Area Connection” static interface ip>add dns “Local Area Connection” index=2

“Start Menu 8 recaptures the navigation structure that you are familiar with from Windows 7. The Windows 8 interface, called Metro, did away with the Start button and replaced it with the flat-paneled menu used on Windows phones and tablets.” -Cnet

    User Review

“Start Menu 8 saves me time and allows me not to change my habits too much.”

“Even thought I’m not a green horn, I was lost the first time I used Win 8 and was more than happy to get the help of “Start Menu 8” which saves me time and allows me not to change my habits too much. In addition I had once a small issue with it and couldn’t solve it by myself, so I wrote to the IObit support team without many hopes…. Wrong assumption…. They answered quickly and gave me the solution to my problem in no time! Since, I’m even more a fan of IObit and looking forward for their next release.”

“Since I started using Start Menu 8, I have had NO issues with the start menu.”

“As a technology consultant and application developer, I rely on virtualization software a lot. I like to create a new virtual machine for each of my projects. This way I can keep the machine clutter free; and only install the tools I need for that project. As I do not like the Metro screen in Windows 8, I like to use a start menu replacement solution to get my Windows 7 look and feel back. I have struggled for the last few years with several different solutions, both paid and free. Sometimes they work well, sometimes not. Since I started using Start Menu 8, I have had NO issues with the start menu. It is a clean implementation and very easy to use and configure. “
