Online Writing Degrees

As John Steinbeck once said, “The profession of writing makes horse racing seem like a solid, stable business.”

Working as a writer or author can be a tricky business. Writers build their careers on experience and reputation, but a college degree can help open many doors.

Potential degrees in writing

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, or BLS, writers, authors and editors generally hold a bachelor’s degree in a field related to writing, such as journalism, English or communications. Writers who want to focus on a particular subject in their writing could be well-served by a degree in that field; for instance, those writing history textbooks might pursue a degree in history or political science. Writers who want to cover the financial industry may pursue additional coursework in economics or finance.

Writing focused online liberal-arts degree programs can take many forms, from creative writing to journalism to marketing copy. No matter the specialty, a writing portfolio is an essential element for writers on the job market. Many degree programs in writing offer opportunities either in class or through internships for writers to gain experience by writing fiction, reporting news stories or crafting advertising copy.

Since writing does not require hands-on training, online degrees in writing are popular. Students in online writing programs can share drafts of work and send feedback to other writers via email or online forums. Online degrees in writing allow students to work at their own pace, writing when inspiration strikes. Online writing programs may also be a great choice for working students who want to improve their writing skills for professional or personal reasons.

What to expect from a career as a writer

Writing is a field that has been dramatically changed by the rise of online media. Today, many writers must tailor their content to a digital audience. While online media has created a wealth of new opportunities for writers, it has also led to shrinking job opportunities in traditional print media. Writing is a competitive field, and the BLS predicts opportunities will be best for writers with experience in new media and electronic formats.

According to the BLS, 70 percent of writers were self-employed in 2008. Among the 30 percent employed by outside companies, about half worked in scientific, professional, technical or publishing industries. Jobs for writers are traditionally found in major media markets, such as Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. However, many writers use the Internet to allow them to work from almost anywhere.

Though many writers work in home offices, they might not have set hours. The nature of covering a news story or meeting a deadline can occasionally mean working around the clock. Writers can spend a great deal of time researching, interviewing sources, writing drafts and working closely with clients to achieve the best outcome before deadline.

The BLS reports a mean annual wage of $64,960 for authors and writers in 2010. While wages at the low end of the spectrum are less than $26,610 per year, established writers can make significantly more. The BLS reports that the upper ten percent made more than $109,440 in 2010.

Good writers are creative, curious and skilled communicators. Writers also need to be able to meet deadlines and work under pressure. In a job market where many work as freelancers, they must also be flexible, self-motivated and able to manage their time well to build a stable career in the industry.

Internet Proofreading from BusinessProofreading.com

Internet Proofreading Is Convenient

In this “I need it yesterday” world, you’re sure to agree with my clients that Internet proofreading is a blessing. The convenience of being able to simply email a message or attachment and have it returned to you polished and ready to impress is an absolute necessity. With Internet proofreading, all your copyediting can be handled quickly and professionally.

“In the advertising/copywriting business, I always hear from customers who are in a hurry for copyediting. It’s such a blessing to know that BusinessProofreading.com is available to help me out in a pinch. The convenience factor of being able to email or fax a project to Cathy and have it returned in just a short while is a real lifesaver!”

Internet Proofreading Is Fast

I constantly hear my clients’ kind words about quick turnaround. Internet proofreading, in and of itself, speeds up the process. And I always strive to meet your deadlines even if you have a rush job.

“Cathy Kessler has proven time and again to be a valuable asset in enhancing the effectiveness of many of my different types of written communications. I know that when I send something to Cathy for copyediting, not only will it be returned to me in a prompt manner, but also the document will be grammatically correct. Cathy’s helpful insights in the area of business proofreading have enabled me to clearly state what I want the reader to know, while doing it in a very straightforward, professional manner. I would highly recommend Cathy to anyone who understands the value of the well-edited written word.”

Internet Proofreading Is Accurate

Most of my clients rave about the accuracy of Internet proofreading. Because the copyediting is done in digital format, the results are more reliable than marking the changes on paper and then having to make adjustments on your document later. If you’d like to see the changes I’ve made while copyediting, just ask, and I’ll gladly mark them for you.

“It’s really hard to find your own mistakes, especially when you know how text/copy should read. I always run all my projects past Cathy’s meticulous eyes before releasing a project to press or production. On more than one occasion, she has found typos or grammatical errors that would have cost me money and aggravation to reprint, not to mention client dissatisfaction as a result, I’ve never had to reprint a project. I would highly recommend Cathy’s copyediting and proofreading services to anyone who writes or uses text/copy of any kind. She’s the best!!”

Creative writing techniques for kids: a step-by-step guide to writing a story

Story language

Ask your child to think of some fabulous words to use in their story writing. They might be long words or simple ones, or they might be great descriptive words or words that help create pace and tension. Encourage them to jot these down and refer to the list as they write their story.

Story starters

All writers know that you’ve got to capture the attention of your readers right from the start; you want to make them desperate to read on. Ask your child to think of some good story openers that’ll entice people to find out more. Here are a few examples:

First sentences that are mysterious…
Molly had no sense of the day that lay ahead.

Story starters that use language tricks like alliteration…
It was damp, dark and dreadfully dusty when Molly entered the house.

Story openers that create tension…
Molly could hear her heart beating faster than ever before. Could this really be happening?

Stories that go straight into dialogue…
“But I don’t want to go to school, Mummy,” groaned Molly.

Encourage your child to look at some of the books they like to read and see how they begin in order to offer inspiration.

Get writing!

Once they’ve got all of these ideas in place, they can start writing. They could do a draft in the first instance and then a neat, polished version later. They may wish to write in short chapters, use illustrations, or make their own book to write in – let them use their imagination and creativity when it comes to presentation, and make sure you show how much you value the end product by keeping it to read again with the other books in your house.

If your child finds writing a story a little daunting, start with something small from our list of 9 fun writing projects to do with your children. Also, find out how to support storytelling skills for children in EYFS. KS1. KS2 and KS3 to get them thinking about story elements, plot and character development.
